It's happening: Microsoft dates next Xbox event for 21st May
"A New Generation Revealed" at 5pm GMT

Microsoft will announce the next generation of Xbox on 21st May.

"On Tuesday May 21st, we'll mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment," reads a blog post by Major Nelson. "On that day, we'll be holding a special press event on the Xbox campus and we invite you to join us via the live global stream that will be available on Xbox.com, Xbox LIVE and broadcast on Spike TV if you are in the US or Canada.

"On that day, we'll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19-days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we'll continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games.

"We are thrilled to pull back the curtain and reveal what we've been working on."

I'm almost willing to bet there won't be a price announcement until E3.

Report: Next Xbox to Reinvent Achievements

A whole bunch of new Xbox rumours have emerged and alongside the usual guff about always-online and video sharing, there’s also some juicy gossip about achievements.

According to Polygon, the way achievements are used and updated will be completely revised for Microsoft’s next-gen machine.

The report claims that the new system will allow developers and publishers to add more achievements to a game following launch, without the need to add DLC.

Apparently, these tweaks are designed in order to allow developers to adjust player behavior. The thinking is that if players are missing a particular area or getting stuck at a specific spot, achievements can encourage them along.

In addition to this, next-gen achievements are also said to be tied to events like weekend challenges or communal goals. Think Mass Effect 3 multiplayer and its method of rewarding players and communities for hitting set targets.

Meanwhile, developers and publishers are also said to be able to create cross-title achievements, rewarding players for completing objectives across a number of games in a series.

According to the report, at least one of these new types of achievement - either communal or cross-title - must be included in every list.

Beyond that, cross-title achievements are also being discussed as a reward for using companion apps, websites or previous gen titles.

Whether these latest rumours are true or not we'll have to wait until May 21st to find out, but they’re interesting talking points nevertheless. The reported changes throw the current rulebook out of the window. So what do you think?

Next Xbox to be called Xbox Infinity - report
Microsoft is "uncertain" about its Xbox TV.

Microsoft's successor to the Xbox 360 appears to be called Xbox Infinity, according to a report by The International Business Times.

"Sources have now revealed the console will be named Infinity and that development kits are already in the hands of studios," read the report. This corroborates a recently leaked logo on Reddit, shown below.

Elsewhere in the rumour mill, Microsoft remains "uncertain" about its previously rumoured "Xbox TV" video-streaming set top box, according to a report at the Wall Street Journal (via VG247). The report noted that Microsoft is still testing this side-project, and afraid that it might cannibalise its console sales or otherwise not stand out in a competitive market. Last we checked, this Xbox TV project was planned for a launch next year after the new console.

Of course Microsoft still maintains that it "does not comment on rumour and speculation," so we won't know any of this for sure until the new console's unveiling on 21st May.

Xbox One: Revealed -

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TP_E6Bn6fWM" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TP_E6Bn6fWM</a>

A key issue discussed has been the "Always On" debate as well as the ability for the new system to play used games. Wired is reporting that the support for used games will not be outright prohibited, but potentially require a fee.

Quote
What follows naturally from this is that each disc would have to be tied to a unique Xbox Live account, else you could take a single disc and pass it between everyone you know and copy the game over and over. Since this is clearly not going to happen, each disc must then only install for a single owner.

Microsoft did say that if a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc.

But what if a second person simply wanted to put the disc in and play the game without installing – and without paying extra? In other words, what happens to our traditional concept of a “used game”? This is a question for which Microsoft did not yet have an answer, and is surely something that game buyers (as well as renters and lenders) will want to know.

The show was boring as expected but at least we got to see the console this time!  :)

Not keen on the look of it or that it comes with Kinect, the pad looks cool though, the second account fee which is obviously Microsoft's way of screwing pre-owned users over is a disgrace and could well be a major deal breaker for many people.

Microsoft offers some quasi-clarification on the whole "Used Games" topic, which is sure to piss more gamers off anyway:

Xbox One games will require a one-time activation code to use, but you'll still be able to trade and sell them online, Microsoft tells Kotaku—although we're not 100% clear on the details.

Speaking to us at the big event in Redmond today, Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison clarified a couple of details about the system's used game policy and explained that there will be a solution for people who want to trade games with their friends.

Here's how the system works: when you buy an Xbox One game, you'll get a unique code that you enter when you install that game. You'll have to connect to the Internet in order to authorize that code, and the code can only be used once. Once you use it, that game will then be linked to your Xbox Live account. "It sits on your harddrive and you have permission to play that game as long as you’d like," Harrison said.

Other users on the console will be able to play that game as well, Harrison said. So you don't need to buy multiple games per family. "With the built-in parental controls of the system it is shared amog the users of the device," he said.

But what if you want to bring a game disc to a friend's house and play there? You'll have to pay a fee—and not just some sort of activation fee, but the actual price of that game—in order to use a game's code on a friend's account. Think of it like a new game, Harrison says.

"The bits that are on that disc, you can give it to your friend and they can install it on an Xbox One," he said. "They would then have to purchase the right to play that game through Xbox Live."

"They would be paying the same price we paid, or less?" we asked.

"Let’s assume it’s a new game, so the answer is yes, it will be the same price," Harrison said.

But that doesn't mean used games are dead. In fact, Harrison told us, you'll be able to sell your Xbox One games online.

"We will have a solution—we’re not talking about it today—for you to be able to trade your previously-played games online," Harrison said.

The Xbox exec wouldn't give further details on how this system will work, but we're assuming that once you're done with a game, you can trade the code online and it will be erased from your machine. But what will you get? Other games? Microsoft Points?

No matter how the final system works, it is not likely to please GameStop, the world's biggest buyer and seller of used video games, but it could be a tantalizing way to share games with your friends in the virtual space.

Yeah, design of the box is underwhelming, the fact that the system itself looks like one of those old school VCR/DVD Combo sets doesn't help. :P

Backpedalling already!

Hopefully MS wasn't just testing the waters with their claims, distrust is an easy thing to gain among consumers. They're already most likely to take a huge hit if the backlash about 'used gaming' is as big as it's already proven to be.

Add to that, the fact that there's not much to drool about with either console (PS4 or Xbox One), true success is going to be a tough get for these companies. Seriously, the unveiling presentation made its main point of focus about how we'll no longer need a remote control...???

Or maybe these were highlights...

Skype in HD? / Mandatory Kinect? / No backwards compatibility? / Cloud dependency?  / Blu-Ray Drive?

How many were really begging for that?

So far, if these are the features Xbox One is going to anchor itself with for the long run, I'd be content to hold on to whatever amount of cash they're going to be asking for.
I'm hoping they're saving the good stuff for E3...?  ??? I can see E3 either quelling some of the confusion out there or sealing the fate of the let-down.
