BBC iPlayer for 360 indefinitely postponed due to disagreement with Microsoft

Though the BBC iPlayer is already available on the Wii and PS3 overseas, it seems a disagreement between the television corporation and Microsoft will keep the platform off of the Xbox 360 for the time being. According to a recent Telegraph article, sources close to the BBC's Future Media and Technology department claim that Microsoft's desire to make the iPlayer a Gold Subscriber-exclusive feature is "incompatible with the BBC's public service remit."

An unnamed BBC representative reportedly explained, "this does not fit with the BBC's model and Microsoft will not budge at the moment. It is really frustrating for those involved on the BBC side who want to make sure iPlayer is rolled out on as many popular entertainment platforms as possible."

i don't watch Sky player, so this doesn't even bother me... and i'd feel like a judas after i lashed the PS3 for getting BBC, when 360 got the mighty Sky.

MS: No plans for BBC iPlayer on 360
"We can add value in other areas at the moment," says European boss

Microsoft's Senior Regional Director for Northern Europe, Neil Thompson, has said the company isn't currently focusing on bringing BBC iPlayer to Xbox 360.

The news emerged when Thompson was asked by OXM about the possibility of the iPlayer coming to Microsoft's box.

"I think the way we look at the services we have with our TV services, we're very happy with what we're doing with Sky," he said.

"What we really want to do is ensure that we can differentiate and bring new things and that's about really looking at the services we have and saying "how can we improve those and make those even more interactive and more differentiated?"

He added: "Now that we have Kinect coming to the platform as well I think that's all we're going to focus our energy on and that's where we're going to put all of our focus on in the next year."

"iPlayer is available on a lot of platforms, people connect to that content in a lot of ways today and it's like 'where would we add value to that particular property at this point?' and we think we can probably add value in other areas at the moment."

Last year The Telegraph cited "sources close to the BBC," admitting that problems arose due to Microsoft's desire to limit iPlayer access to users of the paid-for Xbox Live Gold Service.

What he meant to say is:
"We're not concentrating on bringing BBC iPlayer to Xbox 360 because we can't charge you for it and if it doesn't make us any money then why should we care if you want it."

A few weeks ago this would have mattered to me, with the new series of Doctor Who still airing, but now that it's over I see no use for it until Christmas anyway. Until then  there's still the Sky player which I can access when I get back to the UK later this month. Stilll is a shame though, there are a lot of good BBC shows I wouldn't mind watching now. And I'd be more than happy to renew my gold membership to be able to do so.

Anyone who likes the new Doctor Who is ok in my book. I'm fed up of hearing Tennant fantards bitching about how Matt Smith is nowhere near as good, when in actual fact he's A HUNDRED TIMES BETTER!
