Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

Call of Duty: Black Ops II Images Leak, Confirming Future Setting

[Update]

Following the leak, Activision has finally confirmed the name Black Ops 2, as well as the game's future setting,

"Pushing the boundaries of what fans have come to expect from the record-setting entertainment franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 propels players into a near future, 21st Century Cold War, where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare," says the game's updated website.

The first trailer will be shown during the NBA playoffs in the US, which will begin at 7.30pm EST tonight (after midnight UK time). The website also confirms the game's release date. It hits stores on November 13th.

[Original Story]

The first images of Call of Duty: Black Ops II have leaked onto the web ahead of the game’s formal announcement later today. Rather interestingly, they seem to confirm a near-future setting for the game.

There are three images in total, all of which show the game’s Quadrotor drones in action. They’re essentially badass RC flying machine guns. Another of the images shows a soldier, presumably a player character, in a future-tastic helmet, brandishing a rather large rifle.

All of which represents a rather big change for the series (apart from the big gun part). The future! We’ll be getting more info as the day goes on, but in the meantime what do you reckon? Is a future setting just what the series needed? Are you excited by the prospect of piloting a Quadrotor? Are you disappointed by the washed-out brown colour palette?

Black Ops 2 site goes live, confirms release date, '21st Century Cold War' setting
"Technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare"

Activision's official Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 website has gone live.

As well as confirming a November 13 release date for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, plus the game's box art, the site's pre-order page says:

"Pushing the boundaries of what fans have come to expect from the record-setting entertainment franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 propels players into a near future, 21st Century Cold War, where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare."

The site also links to the first Black Ops 2 trailer on Call of Duty's YouTube channel, but the video is currently private. We imagine that will change once the debut trailer has been aired on US TV tonight.

Black Ops 2 zombies detailed: More players, more zombies, new modes
Better start stocking up on ammo...

Now that Activision has marched Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 into the spotlight we've got some some official details on what we'll see come November, and it looks like Treyarch has something special in store for fans of its zombie mode.

According to our man, who had the opportunity to get a first-hand demonstration of CoD: BlOps 2, this time around Treyarch will be using the game's improved multiplayer engine for zombies, which means double the amount of shuffling corpses to sink your bullets into.

It'll also be able to "handle a co-op tally double that of Black Ops 1's". Eight-player zombies mode? Sign us up. Although Treyarch is still being coy with the deets it has promised there will be some other fresh modes too.

Strong sales of Black Ops' Rezurrection DLC pack has afforded the studio's zombies team some freedom to move. "Treyarch have given their zombie team free reign to do pretty much whatever they want with the mode regardless of the direction the campaign is headed in."

As our preview rightly points out, the last game had JFK, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Freddy Kruger, George Romero and battles on the Moon, we're chomping at the bit to see what Black Ops 2 has in store for us.

Have a read of our Black Ops 2 preview for a lengthy breakdown of what's new.

I still haven't opened Black Ops 1.  I'm not a big COD multiplayer fan, but I do enjoy the single-player.

Same here - and I'm wondering how much of a connection the storylines have. Part of Black Ops was set in the 60's (which I thought was a slight and welcomed departure for COD). Seems like a leap to go all the way up to 2025...even if it's dealing in flashbacks, it doesn't seem like it's recanting that far back.

I believe that's undergoing a slight name change:

Nuketown Re-imagined for Black Ops II as Pre-Order Bonus

Call of Duty: Blacks Ops multiplayer map Nuketown is set to make a return in Black Ops II as a pre-order incentive. “Re-imagined for the future,” the map will be called Nuketown 2025.

All of this comes from information on display at Irish retailer Xtravision. Arriving as part of a “limited edition pack” the map is described as “the biggest incentive in Call of Duty history.”

An image from the retailer has been included below, courtesy of IGN. Official details are yet to be revealed.
