Title: The Last of Us
Post by: GamerMan316 on December 05, 2011, 05:20:02 AM
New PS3 exclusive 'The Last of Us' gets teased
First look at 'PS3 exclusive you won't believe'

A pair of very mysterious teaser videos for a new PlayStation 3 exclusive have appeared online, ahead of a full unveiling at the Spike VGA awards on Saturday.

The teasers were posted on LastofUs.com, however, the evocative phrase isn't prominantly used on the website itself, suggesting it might simply be a tagline for the game in question.

The teasers, one of which you can see below, features quick shots of real-world disasters including what looks to be a viral outbreak, riots, earthquakes and fires, while a male voice eerily describes a troublefree life.

The second video is a 14 second clip that shows a close up of insects, perhaps an allusion to a viral epidemic.

A billboard hyping up the VGAs described the reveal as "A PS3 exclusive you won't believe" (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/327914/vgas-to-premiere-a-ps3-exclusive-you-wont-believe/).

Last week Resident Evil 6 appeared on two different CVs (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/327974/resident-evil-6-appears-on-another-cv-set-in-china/) in the space of 24 hours. Could this be it?

Gears of War 4

I've been saying it for years!   ;D

Lots of rumours about a Bungie game being a PS3 exclusive, only a few more days until we find out.

Interesting stuff, why would a new Bungie game be PS3 exclusive? Activision would lose money that way! :)

Resident Evil 6? interesting theory, guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'd laugh if it was just called ''The last of us''. By the way the website is currently overloaded, so plenty of interest for whatever it is.

Check this out though, which the teaser seems to be hinting at.

I have to say it's veering more towards Resident, remember Resi 4/5 weren't zombies.

And think about the word ''Resident'' and the fact that's call ''Biohazard'' in Japan. Ok stop now and just wait! :)

I've just read a bunch of hype about Resi 6 in the Official Xbox mag, so I'd be hugely surprised (and kind of annoyed) if it becomes a Ps3 exclusive. It sounds like they've turned it into a more fluid experience, or so I hope that's what it meant. Willing to give the franchise another go if they don't vanish to the realms of sony.

Technically, Sony's where Resident Evil got its start, so I wouldn't be that surprised if it happened, based on that.

That makes an unfortunate amount of sense. Gosh darnit. I kind of wanted a PS3 for a while, I started out on Playstation 1, then 2, but then swapped to Xbox 360. Only really "missed" Hellzone but other than that, not really anything on offer that makes me regret it. And I met Halo. Yum yum.

It's worth having both consoles. They have different games entirely and even if you're getting one just for Uncharted that alone is worth it. Especially since they're only $250 now. If you're a true "gamer" then you should have both consoles and not just be an xbox fanboy.

guess i'm not a true gamer, i can't keep up with all the 360 games without having another console to play.

Shame here too :( never played all those classics or rogue spear ''online'' all those years ago. God that brings back memories, mods, clans and dial-up!

Mind you I do have a wii here as well does that count?<in before someone says it: ''wii's not a real console!'' :)

First images for PS3-exclusive The Last of Us reveal slight plot details, sort of, maybe
Maybe it's a Foo Fighters song? It sort of sounds like a Foo Fighters song

The mysterious The Last of Us might be the most anticipated reveal of the Spike TV VGAs, mostly due to its mysterious pre-reveal campaign. So far all we know is that it'll be a PlayStation 3 exclusive, and, beyond that, we've seen a trickle of random, seemingly unrelated videos of ants and stuff. Now, the developers (whoever they are) have begun slowly unveiling screenshots leading up to Saturday's trailer, starting with two that actually give some insight into the plot... we think.

The first looks like an in-game shot, though it couldn't tell us any less. Actually, that's not fair. Technically we know that it takes place on a planet that has plantlife and at least one sun. The second image, though, plays into some of the earlier rumors about the game.

Now that's what we're talking about. We have the President. We have "45 million feared dead or infected." We have England declaring Martial Law. We have quarantines in New Mexico. We don't know about you, but that certainly sounds like some sort of virus to us. Now, whether or not that virus flat-out kills people or turns them into undead, shambling zombies (as videogame viruses are known to do) is unknown, though we don't imagine a developer would want to make a game where we go around killing sick people unless they're sick and violent. Otherwise that would just be weird.

Doesn't give much away, first screenshot possibly jungle relating to the origins of the outbreak, second just giving away 'the last of us' tagline as a headline, maybe telling us indeed this is not the games real title, but then we figured that! 'made in america' on the newspaper box a hint? who knows. You could nearly make up anything at this stage :)

Gears of war 4> before they went to Sera and why they went! now that's far fetched :)

Epic are unveiling a brand new IP at the weekend and have refused to mention what platform it's on, I doubt it's this but you never know, i'd love an Epic PS3 exclusive but I think they'll stick to multi platform like with Bulletstorm.

Naughty Dog wants to "change the f***ing industry" with The Last of Us
"Storytelling is so poor right now," claims creative director

Naughty Dog has delivered a scathing verdict on the "poor" standard of storytelling in video games, revealing its aim to "change the f***ing industry" with upcoming PlayStation 3-exclusive The Last of Us.

Speaking at the studio's offices in Santa Monica on Monday, creative director and writer Neil Druckmann told Eurogamer his team wanted to "raise the bar" in order to make other game developers realise: "Okay, I really need to learn the craft of storytelling, I really need to involve my actors in this in order to get realistic performances and realistic actors. That's what we want to do."

He also argued that reviewers were too quick to praise average storytelling, which could hold back the medium's development.

"We try so hard at Naughty Dog to push things," he said. "And then games come out that are fun and exciting and get visceral things right, but to read in reviews that they have an amazing story is disheartening to us because we work so hard at it.

"As critics we need to raise the bar, otherwise no-one's going to change. We're going to keep pushing ourselves, and kill ourselves to make this story happen - but hope that by doing it, the rest of the industry is going to take notice and try to do the same thing."

Elaborating on where other games went wrong, Druckmann, previously lead designer and co-writer on Uncharted 2, told Eurogamer: "We mistake quantity for quality. We don't focus on characters, we focus on monsters or [the] gruesome."

So what is The Last of Us about? "This is going to sound corny, and it might not appeal to gamers, but I would say it's a love story," said Druckmann. "It's not a romantic love story, it's a love story about a father-daughter-like relationship.

"We approached this genre because we felt no-one is getting to the heart of it. It tells you something about the human condition - that's what you want to do as a storyteller.

"We're not saying every game needs a strong, compelling and dramatic story, but if you are going to make a narrative-based game then you better learn the craft."

Game director Bruce Straley, who held the same role on Uncharted 2, added: "It's not just a zombie game. It's going to be a completely amazing experience that no player has experienced for this genre, the characters, the development, everything."

Neither Sony nor Naughty Dog has yet committed to a release date for the game.

The Last of Us trailer reveals Ellie redesign
UPDATE: Naughty Dog on why Ellen Page's likeness was changed.

UPDATE: Naughty Dog has commented on the decision to change the look of Ellie. Creative director Neil Druckmann told IGN that change was made to make Ellie look more like Ashley Johnson, the mo-cap artist and voice actor behind Ellie.

"After delving further into the game's narrative over the past few months, we decided to modify Ellie's model to better reflect Ashley's personality, and also resemble a slightly younger teen more fitting to the story," Druckmann explained. "We're happy with the final result shown in the cinematic we have released today, and hope the fans like her too."

ORIGINAL STORY: A new trailer full of The Last of Us footage has revealed a slightly changed look for lead character Ellie.

The changes are subtle but noticeable. Once heavily modelled on Juno actress Ellen Page, the new Ellie has now lost her freckles and gained a different shaped nose.

The fresh scenes see Ellie and accomplice Joel encounter another survivor, who turns out to be less than friendly.

Developed by Uncharted studio Naughty Dog, PlayStation 3-exclusive The Last of Us is expected to launch in 2013.

Cover Art:

Some background on this one:  Apparently there's been some "issue" regarding the prominence of the Ellie character on the cover:

From an interview with Creative Director Neil Druckmann / Actor Annie Wersching – "Tess" / Actor Ashley Johnson - "Ellie"

Quote
There have been some concerns over box-art recently – including Ken Levine’s admission that the BioShock Infinite cover has been engineered to target ‘frat boys’ – so I asked the group if they had any suggestions as to why we see so few females on game covers – aside from stereotypical imagery, of course.

“I feel like they don’t put women on the covers because they’re afraid that it won’t sell. It’s all gamers really know – and I don’t want to be sexist by any means – but I get the feeling, generally, that they think games won’t sell as well with a woman on the cover, compared to some badass dude on the front.”

“I agree with what Ashley said,” Druckmann added. “I believe there’s a misconception that if you put a girl or a woman on the cover, the game will sell less. I know I’ve been in discussions where we’ve been asked to push Ellie to the back and everyone at Naughty Dog just flat-out refused.”

[Full Interview (http://www.vg247.com/2012/12/12/the-last-of-us-acting-out-the-end-of-the-world/)]
Title: Re: The Last of Us

It's simple human conditioning.  As a culture, men are favored protagonist in most mediums.  It's not necessarily sexism, it's social psychology.

With that said, it does make female protagonist a welcome and refreshing change.  It's why I almost always choose female characters when given the option.

Kudos to Naughty Dog for taking the risk on the cover art.  Hopefully it doesn't deter attracting would-be buyers browsing the store shelves, unfamiliar with the game's trailers and hype.

Yeah, but according to the "leak" all of that time was wasted in the hands of the wrong development team.  If Gearbox's in-house team had another year to fix it without fear of being sued by Sega, I'm sure the game would have been better received.

I'll rephrase:  The more time a good development team spend on the game, the less likely it will flop.    ;D

Following the critical disappointment of Aliens: Colonial Marines, I've decided I officially support game delays.  The more time they spend on the game, the less likely it will flop.

Except for the case of the game you just mentioned!   :)

I was just going to say the same thing, that games been in development hell forever!

As expected, The Last of Us is getting a lot of praise.

OPM UK magazine 10/10
"A work of art in which amazing sights and sounds fuel an emotionally draining, constantly compelling end of days adventure. This is Naughty Dog pushing the PS3 to its limit. Over to you PS4"

Empire online 5/5
"The Last of Us is not just the finest game that Naughty Dog has yet crafted and an easy contender for the best game of this console generation, it may also prove to be gaming’s Citizen Kane moment," "a masterpiece that will be looked back upon favourably for decades."

Edge 10/10
Epic!!!
from Edge Magazine, with the score being revealed as 10/10, making it only the 15th game in the magazine's history to get full marks.

The Last of Us has a Save Glitch, Here’s What You Can Do

The Last of Us comes out today worldwide and gamers seem to be enjoying one of the best games ever made. However, some of them are reporting a glitch where the autosave simply stops working and this means your progress won’t be saved.

You will have to quit the game and it will start at the last section where the autosave successfully worked. The only thing you can do here is to constantly monitor your progress by pressing start and seeing the text “less than X minutes” on your screen. If you can see that then the autosave is working correctly, but if you see “autosaving, please wait“, then it’s time to quit the game.

Naughty Dog has not announced any patch for this and this doesn’t seem like a major issue if you pay attention to the autosave text in the pause menu.

Hopefully none of this leads to corrupted file saves...that'd be a bummer.

We all knew the resemblance was there and even after a re-design of one of the main characters in Naughty Dog's, "The Last of Us" -  "Ellie" whose name, btw, is also a derivative of "Ellen", but whatevrs...Ellen Page is reportedly not happy with Naughty Dog "Ripping off" her likeness for The Last of Us:

Quote
You'd think the resemblance would be cause for flattery, but weirdly, during an "Ask Me Anything" on Reddit, [Ellen]Page seems the opposite of flattered when the likeness is pointed out by a user.

"I guess I should be flattered that they ripped off my likeness", she says, "but I am actually acting in a video game called "Beyond Two Souls", so it was not appreciated."

Sony declares The Last of Us a success with over 3.4 million global sales
Fastest-selling new IP title in the history of PS3.

Sony has declared PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last of Us a success with over 3.4 million sales worldwide.

These sales, which include the Blu-ray disc and download versions, were accurate as of 3rd July - three weeks after the Naughty Dog developed game launched on 14th June - and mean it's the fastest-selling PS3 title of 2013.

Sony said it's also the fastest-selling new software title in the history of PS3, which means it's the fastest-selling new IP in the console's history.

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida expressed his delight: "These sales figures are a testament to the blockbuster quality of The Last of Us.

"The teams at Naughty Dog are true visionaries and their storytelling capabilities are second to none, this title is an undisputed demonstration of that. SCE continues to be committed to delivering unique gameplay experiences that redefine the interactive entertainment industry and The Last of Us is a perfect example."

In the UK The Last of Us stormed to the top of the UK all-formats chart upon release and earned the biggest launch for a new gaming franchise in over two years, since Rockstar's L.A. Noire.

It was the third-fastest selling game of the year (behind Tomb Raider and BioShock Infinite) and Sony's first chart topper since Uncharted: Golden Abyss at the PlayStation Vita's launch in 2012.

On these shores, The Last of Us' launch week sales were five times greater than those of the first game in the Uncharted series, Naughty Dog's other PlayStation exclusive series. It also had stronger launch week sales than Uncharted 2.

It didn't quite match the opening sales of Uncharted 3, although Uncharted 3 was granted an earlier midweek launch - meaning it was on sale for more days - and arrived in the prime November sales season.
