Title: All Formats chart
Post by: TaraJayne on July 14, 2009, 09:02:40 AM
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 has managed to claw its way to the top of the all-format chart in its second week of release.

The Electronic Arts golf game overtakes fellow EA title Fight Night Round 4 at the top, with the boxing game dropping to second place, above Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen.

With the movie fast approaching, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince climbs a massive six places to fourth, above western shooter Call Of Juarez: Bound In Blood in fifth.

This week's only new title to penetrate the top ten comes in the form of Activision's Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, which re-enters the chart at nine.

The top ten in full:

1. (2) Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (Electronic Arts)
2. (1) Fight Night Round 4 (Electronic Arts)
3. (3) Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen (Activision)
4. (10) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Electronic Arts)
5. (6) Call Of Juarez: Bound In Blood (Ubisoft)
6. (4) Wii Fit (Nintendo)
7. (9) Virtua Tennis 2009 (Sega)
8. (7) The Sims 3 (Electronic Arts)
9. (12) Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Activision Blizzard)
10. (8) Prototype (Activision Blizzard)

Codemasters hits the boundary this week as Ashes Cricket 2009 enters the UK all-formats chart at number one.
Its arrival forces Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 down a place to two, three and four, respectively.
Fight Night Round 4 holds on at five, followed by Potter at six, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood at seven and Mario Kart Wii at eight.
G-Force leaps from 26 to nine thanks to its cinema sibling and The Sims 3 rounds out the chart at 10.

1     Ashes Cricket 2009 (PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)
2    Wii Sports Resort (Wii)
3    Wii Fit (Wii)

UK charts: Batman straight in at the top

Batman: Arkham Asylum has swooped to the top of the UK all-formats chart, providing Eidos with a champion bigger than both Tomb Raider: Legend and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness.

The platform split went 55 per cent in Xbox 360's favour, and Batman arrives for PC on 18th September.

Elsewhere, little has changed. Ashes Cricket 2009 extends an impressive innings by nudging past last week's high-profile newcomer Wolfenstein to take three. Wolfenstein, therefore, falls to four, and is tailed by Wii Fit, Call of Duty: World at War, Mario Kart Wii and Tiger Woods.

Lego Batman enjoys a boost to take nine, while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare rounds out the chart at 10 - it just keeps selling.

Other newcomers are the Fallout 3: Add-On Pack 2 (Broken Steel, Point Lookout) at 20, resulting in the reappearance of Fallout 3 at 37.

1     (NE)   Batman: Arkham Asylum  (PS3, Xbox 360)
2    (2)     Wii Sports Resort  (Wii)
3    (3)     Ashes Cricket 2009  (PC, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)
4    (2)     Wolfenstein  (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
5    (4)      Wii Fit  (Wii)
6    (5)     Call of Duty: World at War  (PC, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, DS)
7    (7)     Mario Kart Wii  (Wii)
8    (8)     Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10  (PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360)
9    (12)     LEGO Batman  (DS, PC, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360)
10    (17)     Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare  (Xbox 360, PS3, PC, DS)

My thought exactly.  I bet some clueless parents (or even very young children) bought Lego Batman thinking it was Arkham Asylum.

Batman holds UK chart top spot

Arkham Asylum retained the top spot on the UK all formats chart during the week ended September 5.

Wii Sports Resort was also a non-mover at number two, despite an 11 per cent drop in weekly sales.

Retailer bundling of Sony's new cheaper and slimmer PS3 had "a marked effect" on the all formats chart during the week in question, according to sales monitor Chart-Track, with Activision-Blizzard one of the main beneficiaries. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare sales jumped 128 per cent week-on-week, helping the title move up seven spots to third.

Wii Fit and Ashes Cricket 2009 rounded off the top five, ahead of the week's highest new entry, 505 Games' IL2 Sturmovik: Birds Of Prey, which debuted in sixth place.

Square Enix's Dissidia Final Fantasy entered at number ten and Atari's Champions Online at 18. Also released on Friday, Nintendo's Metroid Prime Trilogy failed to make the all formats top 40, but charted at number seven on the Wii chart.

01. Batman: Arkham Asylum (Eidos)
02. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
03. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Activision)
04. Wii Fit (Nintendo)
05. Ashes Cricket 2009 (Codemasters)
06. IL2 Sturmovik: Birds Of Prey (505 Games)
07. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (EA)
08. Call Of Duty: World At War (Activision)
09. Fight Night Round 4 (EA)
10. Dissidia Final Fantasy (Square Enix)

UK Charts: Modern Warfare still tops; Assassin's Creed 2 outperforms original's debut

The Assassin's Creed sequel may not have taken out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from the top spot on the UK charts, but the game did outperform the original's 2007 debut by 12 percent in unit sales. Although Chart Track doesn't give specific unit sales figures, it's staggering to think that Infinity Ward's FPS dropped 86 percent after its launch week and still retained the top spot.

Behind the big boys of violence, Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus took the next three spots, respectively. The hardened Left 4 Dead 2 shambled up to seventh spot.

1  CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2
2  ASSASSIN'S CREED II
3  NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. WII
4  WII SPORTS RESORT
5  WII FIT PLUS
6  FIFA 10
7  LEFT 4 DEAD 2
8  MARIO & SONIC AT OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES
9  FORZA MOTORSPORT 3
10 LEGO BATMAN: THE VIDEOGAME

UK charts: MW2 untouchable on top

Activision's Modern Warfare 2 has topped the UK All-Formats chart for a third week and, as December threatens to freeze releases, marches hopefully towards a possible Christmas number one.

The top three are unchanged this week, in fact, as Assassin's Creed II and New Super Mario Bros. Wii stay settled in second and third positions.

FIFA 10 leapt to fourth ahead of a fifth-place Wii Fit Plus, whilst Wii Sports Resort, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and Left 4 Dead 2 followed in sixth, seventh and eighth. Speedy drivers Forza Motorsport 3 and F1 2009 rounded out the top 10.

Newcomers were not only absent from the top 10, then, but missing from the entire top 40. Debutants like LEGO Rock Band (22nd in the Xbox 360 chart) have not performed that well.

1     Modern Warfare 2     (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
2    Assassin's Creed II    (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
3    New Super Mario Bros. Wii    (Wii)
4    FIFA 10    (PC, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360)
5    Wii Fit Plus    (Wii)
6    Wii Sports Resort    (Wii)
7    Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games    (DS, Wii)
8    Left 4 Dead 2    (PC, Xbox 360)
9    Forza Motorsport 3    (Xbox 360)
10    F1 2009    (PSP, Wii)

UK charts: MW2 top, Tony Hawk tanks

Activision may beam as poster-child Modern Warfare 2 racks up a fourth winning week in the UK all-formats chart, but newcomer Tony Hawk: Ride landed face-first on the pavement.

The motion-sensing skateboard game missed the Top 40 entirely and landed at 29th in the PS3 chart and 31st in the Xbox 360 chart. The Wii version is nowhere to be seen.

Ubisoft may also grimace at the first-week performance of James Cameron's Avatar: The Game. This missed the UK all-formats top 40 altogether and settled for 18th in the PC chart, 19 in the PS3 chart and 21st in the Xbox 360 chart. DS and Wii versions did not place.

However, there's a silver lining for Ubisoft, as the big-screen launch of James Cameron's Avatar has yet to happen. Expect sales to jump following the film's 17th December UK launch.

We doubt such a sales-bump will be felt by EA's The Saboteur, which snuck into 39th after its first week on sale.

Rounding out the rest of the top 10 were FIFA 10 (2), Assassin's Creed II (3), New Super Mario Bros. Wii (4), Wii Sports Resort (5), Wii Fit Plus (6), Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (7), LEGO Indiana Jones 2 (8), Forza Motorsport 3 (9) and Mario Kart Wii (10).

The continued performance of games like Mario Kart Wii is phenomenal, although perhaps this illustrates a shortage of options for shoppers picking up a Wii for Christmas.

Modern Warfare 2 claims Xmas top spot
Activision's finest shoots down EA's FIFA 10 to top Christmas charts

Modern Warfare 2 has secured the Christmas No1 spot, according to stat tracker GfK Chart-Track.

The Activision title shot down strong competition from EA's FIFA 10 - which saw weekly sales jump 24 percent - to claim a sixth straight week on top of the chart.

Nintendo's Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort took third and fourth, while Ubi's Assassin's Creed II placed fifth.

Left 4 Dead 2 and Avatar: The Game just missed out on the top ten, which follows:

   1. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard)
   2. FIFA 10 (EA)
   3. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)
   4. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
   5. Assassin's Creed II (Ubisoft)
   6. Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games (Sega)
   7. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo)
   8. Forza Motorsport 3 (Microsoft)
   9. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo)
  10. Just Dance (Ubisoft)

UK charts: Just Dance defeats MW2

An unlikely champion has been found in Ubisoft's Wii game Just Dance, which has ended Modern Warfare 2's nine-week honeymoon atop the UK all-formats chart.

Just Dance sales were up 114 per cent from last week, which boosted the game from third into first.

The game has been on sale for seven weeks already, and gone from relative obscurity at the bottom of the chart to giant-killing at the top.

But had Just Dance not ended MW2's reign, Wii Fit Plus would have, after Nintendo's sporty number moved into second ahead of Activision's record-breaking war game.

This week's big newcomer, Army of Two: The 40th Day entered the chart in fourth.

Meanwhile, SEGA's debutant Vancouver 2010 was absent from the Top 40, having piste-off into the separate PS3 and Xbox 360 charts in 18th and 29th, respectively.

Both of last week's newcomers Bayonetta and Darksiders stayed prominent in the top 10, although their roles were reversed and Darksiders finished the stronger of the pair.

Wii Sports Resort (5), Darksiders (6), Bayonetta (7), FIFA 10 (8), Avatar (9) and Assassin's Creed II (10) round out the top 10.

1     Just Dance  (Wii)
2    Wii Fit Plus    (Wii)
3    Modern Warfare 2 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
4    Army of Two: The 40th Day (PS3, Xbox 360)

Batman not so popular in Japan charts

Batman: Arkham Asylum got off to a bad start in Japan this week, managing to enter the chart at 23rd on PS3 and 42nd on Xbox 360.

The arguably less alluring Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising faired better and debuted at 20th on PS3 and 26th on Xbox 360, according to Media Create data (helpfully compiled on NeoGAF - thanks!)

This week's (ending 17th January) software champion was PSP game Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, again. Highly placed newcomers included Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles on Wii (3), Tekken 6 on PSP (6) and The Last Window: Mayonaka no Yakusoku on DS (7).

The rest of top 10 was familiar and comprised of New Super Mario Bros Wii. (2), Friend Collection (4), Wii Fit Plus (5), The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (8), Wii Sports Resort (9) and Inazuma Eleven 2: Threat of the Invaders (10)

And that meant no room at the inn for Final Fantasy XIII which, after exactly one month on sale, fell out of the limelight into 12th.

Another game that was supposed to flog bazillions was Monster Hunter Tri. Unlike it's ageing PSP sibling, however, this Wii exclusive is now nowhere in the top 50 to be seen.

While the PSP happens to be this week's best selling piece of hardware (73,213), individually the PSPgo happens to be this week's turkey (2027 units).

Combined sales of DS hardware are next highest (DSi LL 30,418/DSi 27.292/DSL 6754), followed by Nintendo's other system, Wii (57,349).

Numbers are down for PS3 but still competitive at 35,156. And Xbox 360 (4622) and PS2 (2580) are bottom of the pile.

The Japs love their handhelds.

Also it's good to see the PSPGo doing sh*t, this'll hopefully put to bed digital gaming for another few years.

Mass Effect 2 enjoys effective debut in UK

Mass Effect 2 has warped to the top of Chart-Track's UK sales chart, revealing that Britain isn't just about Just Dance (which still stepped its way into second place, by the way). Comparing debut weeks, the Normandy crew's second outing sold twice as well on Xbox 360 than the original did back in 2007 and three times higher on PC. EA is expecting a good financial return from Mass Effect 2, having already shipped 2 million copies.

Taking the bronze this week on the all-formats chart is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and in fourth is ... MAG. Yes, coverage of the PS3-exclusive may have been totally eclipsed by BioWare's space opera, but it still managed a strong debut.  The rest of the list features the usual suspects, though Dragon Age: Origins has made a return to the top 40. It seems Mass Effect 2 wasn't the only BioWare game casting a spell over consumers last week.

UK All Formats Chart (Top 10)

1.   MASS EFFECT 2
2.   JUST DANCE
3.   CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2
4.   MAG
5.   WII SPORTS RESORT
6.   WII FIT PLUS
7.   FIFA 10

MW2 was world's best-seller in 2009

Activision's Modern Warfare 2 has predictably been crowned the best selling game of 2009, in the world.

Infinity Ward's shooter sold a massive 11.86m units, comprised of 8.82m US sales, 2.80m UK sales and 237,500 Japanese sales.

The rest of the top five was dominated by Nintendo, according to correlated NPD, GfK Chart-Track and Enterbrain figures.

Wii Sports Resort managed a global 7.57m units (4.54m US/1.54m Japan/1.49m UK), followed closely by New Super Mario Bros. Wii with 7.41m units sold (4.23m US/2.49m Japan/687,300 UK).

Wii Fit Plus was next with 5.8m (3.53m US/1.30m Japan/968,300 UK) and comfortably ahead of older sibling Wii Fit with 5.44m (3.60m US/1.25m UK/588,300 Japan).

In general, these three regions sold 8 per cent less software than in 2008 - the UK had the largest fall (14 per cent) and Japan the lowest (2 per cent). Part of that is attributed to PS2, software sales for which fell at least 50 per cent in each region.

UK charts: Bad Company 2 dominates

EA's newcomer Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has topped the UK All-Formats chart.

Xbox 360 claimed most sales (53 per cent), followed by PS3 (31 per cent) and then PC (16 per cent). The latter number is likely to be higher in reality as digital sales are not counted.

The other new entries in the top 40 were Supreme Commander 2 in 23rd and the PC edition of Assassin's Creed II, which boosted the multiplatform game to 14th.

Ubisoft's Wii champion Just Dance was in second, Aliens vs. Predator in third, Heavy Rain in fourth and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing in fifth.

Wii Fit Plus, Modern Warfare 2, Wii Sports Resort, FIFA 10 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii rounded out the top 10.

I've only played 3 or 4 of the Final Fantasy games, FF7 being my favourite, not in any rush to play the new one.

There are two films, this one (http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/97702/Final-Fantasy-The-Spirits-Within/Product.html) while technically awesome, sucks.  This one (http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/815345/Final-Fantasy-VII-Advent-Children/Product.html), however, I really enjoyed, theres even a nod to FF7 in a ringtone in the movie  :)

UK chart: LEGO Potter blocks competition

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 has stupefied the UK to top the regional all-formats software chart.

Traveller's Tales block remake of the bespectacled school of witchcraft and wizardry put an end to Red Dead Redemption's five-week run at the top. Rockstar's Wild West game, however, budged only one places to second.

There are three other new faces in the top 10 this week: 505's Naughty Bear in fifth, the outstanding Demon's Souls in sixth and Transformers: War for Cybertron in eighth.

Activision's new shooter Singularity fell flat and managed to reach only 38th.

Rounding out the rest of the top were Super Mario Galaxy (3), 2010 FIFA World Cup (4), Just Dance (7), Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (9) and Modern Warfare 2 (10).

01. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (Warner)

UK chart: Rayman spent 5 years there

DS game New Super Mario Bros. may have spent more than three years (169 weeks) in the UK all-formats top 40, but that doesn't hold a candle to what the original Rayman achieved.

Ubisoft's platform game occupied a top 40 spot for an outrageous 261 weeks, according to Chart-Track data provided to Eurogamer this afternoon. That's more than five years.

Team17's Worms wasn't far off that with a massive 239-week stint.

The gap widened after that: Brain Training recorded 190 weeks inside the top 40, Grand Theft Auto 178 weeks and Theme Park 172 weeks. That puts New Super Mario Bros.' 169 week tally (that continues to grow) sixth highest.

Below that, Tomb Raider 2 spent 167 weeks in the top 40, The Sims 2 160 weeks, Wii Play 159 weeks and The Simpsons: Hit & Run 156 weeks.

That was the all-formats top 40. Chart-Track broke those numbers down further for Eurogamer into weeks spent at number 1, the top 5, the top 10 and the top 20. The numbers were recorded from 1996 onwards.

Record holder for weeks at number 1 was Eidos' Who Wants to be a Millionaire? with 18 weeks. Wii Fit held second with 16 weeks, and FIFA Soccer '96 and FIFA - Road to the World Cup '98 shared third with 11 weeks. Fourth (10 weeks) was tied between seven games: GTA: Vice City, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Tomb Raider, FIFA '07, Pokemon Yellow, Medal of Honor: Frontline and Need for Speed: Underground 2. Fifth (9 weeks) was split three ways between FIFA 2000, V-Rally and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

For weeks in the top 5, Wii Fit reigned supreme, having stayed there for 56 weeks. That's over a year in the top 5. Tomb Raider almost managed that with 51 weeks. FIFA '99 managed 47 weeks, Grand Theft Auto 3 46 weeks, Gran Turismo 42 weeks and Wii Play 39 weeks. Driver tallied 36 weeks and Worms, GTA, FIFA Soccer '96 shared eighth place with 32 weeks. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games notched-up 30 weeks and FIFA '09 and Tomb Raider 2 shared 10th place with 29 weeks each.

Might as well soldier on.

Weeks spent inside the top 10 was dominated by Brain Training (87 weeks), but only just: Tomb Raider managed one less with 86 weeks. The Wiimote-bundled Wii Play was third with 82 weeks, Grand Theft Auto and Tomb Raider 2 shared fourth with 79 weeks and Wii Fit was fifth with 68 weeks. Worms stayed in the top 10 for 65 weeks, Gran Turismo for 64 weeks and Mario Kart Wii and Driver shared eighth place with 63 weeks. Colin McRae Rally made an appearance in ninth with 56 weeks, and FIFA '99 and Grand Theft Auto 3 shared 10th with 55 weeks.

Finally, then: the games that stayed longest in the top 20. These were Brain Training (156), Worms (147), Rayman (140), Tomb Raider 2 (130), Wii Play (126), Grand Theft Auto (124), Tomb Raider (120), Colin McRae Rally (111), The Sims 2/Mario Kart Wii (100) and Driver (96).

UK CHART: Fable 3 takes the throne
Lionhead's latest is Xbox 360's 13th biggest UK launch title ever

Fable 3 has entered the UK all formats chart at No.1.

Lionhead's excellent title - check out CVG's Fable 3 Review (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=271664) - beats Fable 2's week one sales performance by 6,000 copies to become the 13th biggest Xbox 360 launch title ever in the UK.

FIFA 11 places at No.2 on the UKIE/GfK-ChartTrack rankings, ahead of former chart-topper Fallout 3, Just Dance 2 and new entry Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II.

Elsewhere, The Sims 3 re-enters the top ten at No.9 following the release of the console versions last week, while The Sims 3: Late Night debuts at No.15 and The X Factor at No.37.

While it has received excellent reviews, the pricey Rock Band 3 makes its chart bow at No.26.

01. Fable III (Microsoft)
02. FIFA 11 (EA)
03. Fallout: New Vegas (Bethesda)
04. Just Dance 2 (Ubisoft)
05. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II (LucasArts)

UK chart: COD blops Creed from top

Call of Duty: Black Ops has denied Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit a top spot in the UK all-formats chart.

Activision's record-breaking game is top (54 per cent on Xbox 360, 40 per cent on PS3); Ubisoft's celebrated action game second (55 per cent on Xbox 360, 45 per cent on PS3); and EA's fantastic racing title third (48 per cent on Xbox 360, 47 per cent on PS3).

Call of Duty: Black Ops sales dipped 85 per cent from last week, but Treyarch's shooter still managed to sell 63,000 copies more than AC: Brotherhood. The latter has enjoyed the biggest UK launch of the Assassin's Creed series.

The rest of the top 10 is boring: FIFA 11 in fourth, Just Dance 2 fifth, Wii Party sixth and Wii Sports Resort seventh.

In eighth is Professor Layton and the Lost Future, ninth is Kinect Sports and last but not least is New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Awful movie tie-in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, entered 20th.

There's a common theme to the games dropping out of sight this week. Off the bottom of the top 40 list are Kinectimals, Kinect Joy Ride, Your Shape: Fitness Evolved, Sonic Free Riders and Sports Champions.

Gran Turismo 5 tops UK chart

The long awaited PlayStation 3 exclusive Gran Turismo 5 has topped the UK all-formats chart.

Sony's simulator is the first game to knock Call of Duty: Black Ops off its perch. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood remains a place below, dipping to third.

FIFA 11 and Just Dance 2 were fourth and fifth.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit was sixth, Wii Party seventh, Art Academy eighth, Wii Sports Resort ninth and Fallout: New Vegas 10th.

Ubisoft's dancing game Michael Jackson: The Experience entered in 32nd place.

The Undead Nightmare bundle of Red Dead Redemption showed up in 14th.

UK chart: Christmas number one is...

The UK all-formats Christmas number one for 2010 is Call of Duty: Black Ops, the fastest-selling game the world has ever seen.

As in previous weeks, FIFA 11 dribbles close by in second, and is followed by Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit in third, Just Dance 2 in fourth and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood in fifth.

Gran Turismo 5 keeps on chugging in sixth, Donkey Kong Country Returns beats its chest in seventh, Medal of Honor salutes in eighth and Wii Fit Plus puffs in ninth.

Rounding out the top 10 is DS game Professor Layton and The Lost Future.

UKIE reveals best-selling video games of 2010

UKIE, the Association for UK Interactive Entertainment, has revealed the top ten best selling games of 2010. Xbox 360 exclusive Halo: Reach sits comfortably at the number nine spot in the all-formats chart, just above the multiplatform title Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Call of Duty: Black Ops unsurprisingly takes the top spot, with Fifa 11 at number two. The Xbox 360 isn't the only console with an exclusive in the top 10, however. The Wii has three (Just Dance, Just Dance 2 and Wii Fit Plus), though the PS3 has none.

Considering the industry is moving towards releasing more games in the first quarter of the year, it's surprising to see so few games released during that period in the top 10. There's no sign of Mass Effect 2 in the all-formats or Xbox 360 charts. Looks like Christmas is still the best time to release, if you can stomach going up against Call of Duty.

2010 All Formats Chart

1.Call of Duty: Black Ops
2.FIFA 11
3.Just Dance
4.Red Dead Redemption
5.Wii Fit Plus
6.Just Dance 2
7.Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
8.Wii Sports Resort

UK top 40: Modern Warfare 3 sells fewer than Black Ops
Skyrim, second, is fifth biggest of 2011

Modern Warfare 3 demolished opposition to conquer the UK video game sales chart this week.

Surprisingly, Modern Warfare 3 sold fewer units in the UK in one week than previous Call of Duty instalment Black Ops.

Modern Warfare 3 sold "just under" two million copies - 1.6 per cent less than Black Ops, according to Gfk Chart-Track.

However, Modern Warfare 3 took more money than Black Ops, raking in £83.1 million - 1.5 per cent more.

Combine the money made by Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops' in their opening weeks, and they total more than the combined opening weekends of all eight Harry Potter films in the UK.

More copies of Modern Warfare 3 were sold on Xbox 360 than on PlayStation 3 - 59 per cent to 41 per cent.

Activision announced that Modern Warfare 3 sold a record breaking 6.5 million copies in the US and UK in one day. Those sales generated $400 million, which made Modern Warfare 3 the biggest entertainment launch - including movies' opening weekends - ever.

Modern Warfare 3's unassailable lead meant RPG Goliath Skyrim settled for a second-place debut. But what a second-place; Skyrim had the fifth biggest opening week of the year (after Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 12, Battlefield 3 and only just behind Gears of War 3). Also, Skyrim more than doubled the opening week tally of Fallout: New Vegas, making it Bethesda's fastest selling game ever.

Xbox 360 claimed a huge retail majority of Skyrim sales, with 59 per cent. Only 26 per cent of shop-bought Skyrim copies were on PS3, and 15 per cent were on PC (digital sales aren't counted).

The launch of two huge titles, plus a chart filled with numerous blockbusters, meant this week was the biggest ever for UK video games. Total take for the week was £120.8 million (you can see how much Modern Warfare 3 dominated).

Uncharted 3 was sixth, followed by Nintendo DS newcomer Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo. Moshi Monsters is a massive web-based MMO for kids, in case you're wondering.

Batman: Arkham City, Zumba Fitness and Wii Party rounded out the top 10.

UK CHART: Skyrim takes Christmas No.1 spot
Breaks EA and Activision's eight year stranglehold on the top of the Xmas chart

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim tops this week's UK all formats chart to claim the Christmas No.1 spot.

According to Chart Track, it's the first time in eight years the Xmas top spot hasn't been held by an EA or Activision title.

The still heavily price promoted Skyrim sold almost 15,000 units more than this week's No.2, Just Dance 3, which comes in just ahead of Modern Warfare 3.

FIFA 12 settles for No.4, while strong price promotions help Saints Row: The Third jump three places to No.5.

Battlefield 3, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Need for Speed: The Run, Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call round off the top ten.

GfK/Chart-Track Top 10 (week ended December 17):

1.   The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda)
2.   Just Dance 3 (Ubisoft)
3.   Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision)
4.   FIFA 12 (EA)
5.   Saints Row: The Third (THQ)
6.   Battlefield 3 (EA)
7.   Assassin's Creed: Revelations (Ubisoft)
8.   Mario & Sonic London 2012 Olympic Games (Sega)

UK Top 40: Final Fantasy 13-2 wins first place
Metal Gear HD beats SoulCalibur 5, NeverDead no-where.

Final Fantasy 13-2 has entered the UK all-formats chart in first place, ending FIFA 12's reign on top.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, a trilogy of classic MGS games now made a little prettier, arrived in second.

Fellow new entry SoulCalibur 5 was fifth, behind Battlefield 3 and FIFA.

Last week's other new game release, limb-detachment shooter NeverDead, failed to find footing in the top 40 altogether.

That left Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim, Just Dance 3 and Saints Row: The Third to fill out the remainder of the top 10.
