Bungie indicates PS3 support is likely

Bungie has told Eurogamer that its deal with Activision, announced earlier today, is an opportunity to bring its new IP to a wider audience than just Xbox 360 owners.

Although he would not discuss specific formats - we asked about PS3, PC and Wii, Bungie's Brian Jarrard told us: "There are bigger opportunities out there for us and we would love to be able to reach more fans than we have before and really bring our experience to them on the platforms and devices of their choosing.

"So certainly that's something we're planning for and working towards in the future, so it's great that's one area Activision has a lot of experience in."

Right now, however, it would be premature to comment. "We've been working right now simply on more of a pre-production level, so things that are really platform-agnostic," according to Jarrard.

We also asked whether the wording of the announcement - a 10-year deal for games connected with a new IP, rather than a game-specific deal - might mean that Bungie's new project is massively-multiplayer.

"I can't get into specifics, but we're definitely looking at building a universe that people want to spend time in," Jarrard said.

"Much like Halo but we have much more grandiose vision here, so it's a long-term partnership for us. We're really embarking on something that will be a significant undertaking for the studio that will involve multiple games set inside this brand new IP and universe.

"But clearly Activision does have good experience running large-scale universes over a long period of time, so that was one appealing attribute that drew us to them."

Check out the full Bungie interview on the Activision deal.

Microsoft reacts to Activision/Bungie deal
Platform holder says relationship with Halo dev 'remains unchanged'

Microsoft has given its reaction to today's news that Activision has signed a ten-year exclusive publishing deal with Bungie.

A company spokesperson told CVG in a statement:

"Our partnership with Bungie as a first-party developer for Xbox 360 remains unchanged, and right now we're deeply engaged with them on the development of Halo Reach, which is poised to be the biggest game of 2010."

So there you have it. Single-mindedly concentrating on Reach. Bungie's last project before it releases new IP exclusively handled by Activision.

Nope, we still can't get our head round it either.

Earlier this year, Bungie refused to comment on whether its next project would be coming to PS3. Today's announcement suggests a multi-platform release.

Bungie was previously owned by Microsoft, but split with the company back in 2007 to become independent.

The firm today revealed that its new deal with Activision had been planned for nine months.

10 years is a long time in the games industry, this will give Bungie plenty of stability in the development world

Hooray for Bungie ... unless they end up getting screwed by Activision.  Hopefully they had better contract laywers than Infinity Ward had.

I hope every game Bungie makes from this point forward is multiplatform.  I hate console exclusives.  I wish every game was made for every platform, and the consumer was given complete freedom to decide which console they prefer.

Won't happen mate, MS own the IP, so nothing to worry about.

They will do multi platform games in the future though, after Reach of course.

It's completely true that copyright filings happen every day and that they can mean absolutely nothing, blah blah blah, yadda yadda. However, we've heard so little about Bungie's upcoming 10-year franchise deal with Activision that these American trademark filings are potentially the first glimpse into their new universe.

Found by supposedly-retired trademark-sniffer Supererogatory, the trademarks filed are for the terms "Dead Orbit", "Osiris", "New Monarchy" and "Seven Seraphs". They were filed in July 2010 and apparently relate to artwork, though this can include marketing and promotional materials, such as logos.

Various domain names for these terms have also been registered last September, with the same registration info as a suspect BungieAerospace.com domain. Which obviously contains the word Bungie, so we've come full circle.

It's an eclectic mix of terms, one or all of which could be a red herring. "Dead Orbit" definitely conjures space-opera style images, while "Osiris" and "Seven Seraphs" have a more mythological tone to them.

While these trademark filings tell us very little, at least it gives us something to think about while we wait for Bungie and Activision to unveil their big project. Hopefully we won't be waiting too long.
