Molyneux unveils Fable III for 2010


Lionhead and Microsoft Games Studios Europe boss Peter Molyneux has announced Fable III for Xbox 360 at a press conference at gamescom in Cologne, Germany this morning. It will be released in 2010.

The game will see you become the ruler of Albion, deciding whether to be a kind king or a tyrant, and whether to keep the promises you made on your way to top. Your decisions and judgements will affect the shape of Albion and its society.

You'll be a hero ruler, and still an adventurer, "like a captain in Star Trek", said Molyneux. The game won't be an RTS, he promised. You'll also be able to travel to lands beyond Albion's borders for the first time.

The game will be out next year, but "don't expect it too early in 2010", said Molyneux.

Picture it: the land of Albion in the age of steam. Through the cobbled streets of its towns, crooked houses with slated roofs compete for the afternoon sun with angry eruptions of unlikely machinery, valves match steeples for control of the skyline, and oily goop drips into babbling brooks that run beside fields of already queasy sunflowers.

"You'll see new marvels of the industrial age, devices that the people of Albion are amazed by," enthuses art lead John McCormack. "Half of Bowerstone will be turned into this mass of pistons and steam and clockwork - everything's moving." You'll have to picture it for yourself at the moment, because these are early days for Fable III (a game which, even if it's a disaster, will probably go down in history as the best title ever accidentally announced on Twitter, by Jonathan Ross). Prototypes are up and running deep inside Lionhead's offices, but none of it's ready for the likes of us just yet, unless you're willing to move to Guildford, fake a CV and wing a job as an advanced AI programmer.

A recent chance to sit down with the designers and learn about the early stages of the game's development revealed no hints of Natal, no suggestions if the Milo experiments are bleeding in, no news on what's become of your dog or your trail of breadcrumbs, and no crazy schemes for online modes. The team is willing to give us a tantalising taste of what it is they want to do, but nobody's ready to reveal exactly how it's going to be done.

Instead, there are stories. Stories like this: Several months ago, no matter how many exactly, as Fable II was chugging nicely towards release, a small group gathered in a meeting room at Lionhead. They had come to decide what Fable III would be - and what it wouldn't be. It's a special moment for any game, but particularly poignant for this one: a series that hangs upon choices was having its own mechanics enacted in real life. Perhaps Peter Molyneux even kicked a chicken a good distance at some point during the discussion.

"We started to think about Fable III halfway through Fable II," says McCormack. "You're always thinking about the future, and because of the speed of the industry, you're trying to pre-empt any lag. You get to the end of a game, and hopefully you know what you're doing next already. It's really unfocused at this stage, though, because you don't want to tie yourself down too early. So what we do is we present Peter and the designers with a range of art, a range of things that Fable III could be - all the settings and eras and styles it could be. Anything that tickles your fancy. You put together what you think is a logical progression, but also what you think is a crazy progression, and let the designers and artists work together to choose the best one."

And what they chose, once again, is something of a mish-mash. "The entire Fable idea is a fairytale twist on European history and myth," says McCormack. "What we've settled on is to go about 50 years on from Fable II. So we've loosely chosen the Napoleonic period, and we've started to pull in a bit of Regency, a tiny bit of Victorian, and we're plugging in an early industrial age to Albion. It's a Napoleonic fairytale."

Ships and cannons and troops, metal and rivets and chattering pipework: Fable II was already a game built from details - anyone who ever stopped to watch the hot blast of animation thrown out whenever one of Albion's humble clockwork doors got ready to open will know that - and this tentatively mechanised environment is a proposition that sounds entirely fitting, even if it promises to significantly alter the familiar environments. "There's still a consistency," offers McCormack. "We never want to be photorealistic. The art style is: never put in straight lines, never use a right-angle, always break shades into opposing colours. There's rules within the art that hopefully turn it into a fairytale no matter where we go. I think we solidified the style with Fable II; with Fable III, we've nailed it.

"We've moved it forward. Think of the monsters: industrialisation has pushed the fairytale creatures underground, and to the edges of the forests. You'll go there, and they're still around, but they're not happy about it this time. Albion's still full of mystery and wonder, but it's more aggressive: the ancient creatures don't like to be shoved away."

The shift in period is not just an aesthetic choice, then: the landscape is telling a story, and the story itself is typically rooted in the series' fascinations with choices and morality. "There's some mad stuff coming in," laughs McCormack, unwittingly sketching designs in the air with his hand. "One of the main themes here is how the advancement of the new world is having an adverse effect on the beautiful lush environments of Albion. Industrialisation is changing Albion, and do you want to put a stop to that?"

Don't expect an easy decision, though: Lionhead isn't pretending that the wonders and horrors of the modern era aren't knotted tightly together. "We're interested in how industry can destroy nature, but also how it can create ships and balloons and cable-cars that take you farther afield and to other lands. It's about colonisation and travel as well. You're expanding the world by introducing industrialisation, but there's always that darker side, and that's war. You're producing war machines and militarising the population."

War? Sounds nasty. "I'm terrified," says Peter Molyneux, looking tanned, rested, and distinctly unterrified. "The third time out is tricky. This is where it could all go wrong." He leans back in his chair and spreads his arms wide, as if to show us there's nothing up his sleeves. "This is where it could all... go... wrong."

An auspicious start, but he's right, despite the familiar soft-spoken pantomime. The third time out is tricky, and Molyneux's not talking about another charity parachute jump, or a difficult internet follow-up date, but the next instalment in a vast, expensive, and rather divisive series. What he's getting at is that it's not just the art and the concerns inherent in the historical period that's changing this time around. "When you come to the third iteration what do you do?" he asks. "We've always wanted to surprise people with Fable. Hopefully you can see going from Fable I to II, we're getting slightly better at doing these things. Now we need to get better still. We need to raise the temperature, and inevitably entirely new mechanics play a part in that."

See the Future, the enigmatic puddle of DLC that reflected a fractured image of things to come earlier this year, hinted as much. Booting you forward to a period in Albion's history when you sat upon a throne and decided the fate of millions, many interpreted it as a major shift in genre. And while Lionhead isn't necessarily agreeing with that outright, it's prepared to offer some interesting hints at this unusually early stage of development.

So if this is Albion as you've never seen it before - caught between mechanised, inhuman progress and the bloomy rural dreaminess of the past - it's also Albion in a way you've never seen it before. And this is where the information starts to grow sparse. "When you think about a view of Albion you haven't had yet, looking down on it is a view you haven't had yet," suggests Josh Atkins, Fable III's lead designer - an American at the helm of perhaps the most English of games, but an American who helped out on parts I and II, and has also, y'know, worked for Miyamoto. "We're talking about being able to see more and influence more."

Atkins is quick to refine his vision slightly. "Fable is inherently the story of one person, remember. We have to have that narrative. It's not something we can get away from. All I can reveal at the moment is that we are working on a way to see the world with a wider view, so that you can directly influence large sections of the kingdom at any one time. But at its heart it's still a third-person action game." He laughs. "That experience of being able to directly change the world is something that would actually blend quite nicely with Fable, pulling the camera back a little and allowing you to see how you're changing things and what's going on."

To clarify further, if Fable II spent a lot of energy making you feel significant, Fable III aims to show you the challenges that come with power and influence. "We've played off of the end of the last game," says Atkins. "After you've saved the world, how would the world treat you? What would they think about you as a hero? We've always been thinking about morality with this series, but we started thinking about responsibility too. And what that turned into was this idea that, if we want your moral choices to have a much wider impact, what would happen if your Fable II hero had become king or queen? We played around with that and got quite excited. But we really wanted the game to have some kind of journey. Fable is always about the path from anonymity to greatness.

"So maybe you're not the Fable II hero, but maybe you're attached to them. Maybe something happened to your Fable II hero, and you have to right the wrong. Maybe you're their child. That gives us the best of everything: you never play your hero from the last game, but we will be looking at the decisions you made on that adventure, and referencing that - those decisions will carry through."

Perhaps it's a more natural evolution than it seems. "In Fable I there was a lot of heroes around - a whole college," says Molyneux, ticking off games on his fingers. "In Fable II, we used that 500-year gap to say that heroes had died out, and you were the only hero left. Part of your job was to rekindle the heroes and bring them together. How can we play with that again? Then there's the choices and consequences thing: we're getting better, but some people still say, 'It's nice to have choices, but what did it really mean to the world?' So what we've come up with is a game where a good portion of the adventure is you going on this journey towards being the ruler of the land. You're earning that right. And what's interesting about that journey is you can take the notion of choices and consequences as almost being promises.

"What promises are you going to make to become ruler, and then how many of those promises are you going to keep? You can see with Tony Blair and Obama that it's very easy to make promises and be a rebel. If Che Guevara had lived to deliver on his promises, if he had ruled, would he have been that wonderful amazing person? There's many examples in history of rebels who once they get power, they go bad a bit. This time in Fable, you're not a hero whose only power is in his sword. There's a certain point in the game where you have the power to rule, so how are you going to use that?"

That certainly explains why Che suddenly popped up on Lionhead's website the other week - drat, no Cuban Dungeon Keeper sequel just yet - but it's a direction that raises as many questions as it answers. Is Fable III going to lurch suddenly from one style of game to another? "Bringing in ruling the land is one of the big changes," admits head of franchise Louise Murray, who's job is to make sure that every decision fits in with Lionhead's vision of where Fable is going. "How we present that, and the mechanics of how you interact with that is certainly one of the game's big challenges."

So is the life simulation aspect of Fable taking a step forward? "Absolutely," says Murray. "We're making the sim elements more accessible, and making them a part of the story properly. We are still having Fablesque stuff, however: if you want to drill down into the sim activities and that alone, it's still an option, but hopefully most players will be more exposed to the sim element of it in the first place - but not at the cost of distracting from the adventure. Getting that balance is something we iterate on. It's like combat - it's a fundamental piece of the game, but how do you bring that in, without making it just a combat game?"

It's when she mentions combat, calling to mind Fable II's easy pleasures of wading into a gaggle of bandits without a care in the world - certainly without pondering how the bandits impacted Albion's economy and whether a sword through the brain was a smart political idea - that it becomes apparent how much Fable is in flux. Maybe the forums were right, and the series is becoming an RTS - hardly a reach for Lionhead, after all.

The team is adamant that that's not the case, but with its mix of third-person action and that wider, loftier perspective it sounds like a variation on that theme - it sounds a little, in fact, like Don's View, the RTS metagame that briefly defibrillated Godfather II. At the mention of that, Atkins, polite as he is, can barely suppress a brutal wince and a sound that, after several attempts at transcribing, is probably best conveyed as "Nyaarrrggff."

"It's different than that," he adds quickly. "It's very different. Let's imagine you're the leader of a town in Fable, people come to you and say, 'We have this disagreement, what do you think we should do?' and you can say, 'I think this person's right.' But then imagine someone comes and says, 'Oh my God, there's a farmer outside of town and he's doing something horrible.' That's not a situation where you can just decide who's right or wrong. This is actually a guy who's killing people - what do you do? It's about making the tasks you're faced with evolve throughout the game and become more elaborate and demanding."

Murray agrees. "Things like the combat are still core ideals, and we're always going to try and make the game be what you want it to be. If you want to continue on that level, that's likely to be an option. What we're really passionate about is creating more drama, and relationships with other characters that are meaningful to you. So we don't want it to turn into an RTS. You won't see that. It's about keeping the journey very personal and emotional: you'll never lose that perspective. We're an adventure game with extras. We almost want to get away from the RPG tag, and we definitely don't want the RTS tag. It's about you doing things in the world, and that having meaning."

"When you're in power it's still very personal," adds Molyneux who, after all, should know a little about this. "Rulers don't stand on a big balcony and dictate what happens. Rulers are surrounded by people telling them they need to go here and do this and do that. Power's a very intimate thing in this game. The interesting thing is that one of the resources is you: what you're choosing to do is very important. What will you do, what will you deputise? You have to pick your battles and pick your time."

At the moment, with almost everything still under wraps, it's hard to know exactly how to interpret what Lionhead has in mind, although, rightly or wrongly - and let's face it, probably wrongly - the game that sticks in my head most of all throughout my afternoon with the team isn't Black & White or Command & Conquer so much as Little King's Story - an active spin on panoramic strategy with a lot of personality.

Personality: after all, that's the riddle of Fable. Despite - or possibly because - of the blank canvas of your hero, personality is the vital element that makes all the clever ideas come alive, the simple, yet elusive, key to this particular kingdom. For all its ambitions and epic scope, Fable has long been a close-up series, the defining moment coming when you click in the stick to take a nice long look at who you've become, trying to remember where you got so many scars, who gave you those Fat Elvis shades, and the choices that turned you such a malignant, rotting shade of blue.

As any real-world ruler would probably tell you - if you could fight your way through the ranks of security minders and babbling staffers - the grander your intentions, the bigger the risks. For a company named after a hamster, Lionhead doesn't have a history of thinking small; I'm glad to report that it doesn't appear to have picked up a taste for it in the last year or so either.

 :o Do you like the first one? I will beat you down. Fable 2 is awesome. But to be honest you are right the ending/s are shite. Yes also the game is easy but its alot of fun

The enjoyment of the game is not in the challenge (the game is quite easy), it's in the emersion.  The Fable world is full of little enjoyments, I can spend hours just traveling around and socializing / harrassing the population.

tbh the 6 -8 hours it takes to finish the game could be spent playing far worse games and they have. My dislike for Fable 2 is nothing compared to my eternal hatred for Fuzion Frenzy.

Microsoft's Phil Spencer says he wouldn't be surprised if Natal found its way into the Fable series.
That's obviously a statement that's given both himself and Lionhead plenty of room for manoeuvre but nevertheless, Spencer does say that he can easily picture future iterations of Fable with the motion control.

"You know, Lionhead's been a real innovation studio for us," he explains. "We have the release of Fable 2 episodic this week, where they're taking Fable 2 and breaking it up into chunks, allowing people to buy the content at their pace. Fable 2, I thought, was a great release, with the orbs they added with Live, adding new functionality to the franchise. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Natal found its way into future iterations of Fable."

It wouldn't surprise us either, given the strength of the Lionhead and Microsoft relationship, especially now Peter Molyneux is effectively bridging the gap between the two parties. How would motion control be implemented in Fable though?

Natal

I've read some recent articles in OXM and Game Informer that actually got me thinking a little differently about Natal.  When it was first introduced, it seems like it would require games to be designed from scratch to be compatible.  THe entire gameplay would need to be reworked in order to use Natal.

But the more I think about it, I see that Natal could be less of a complete control interface, and more of an enhancement to the current controls we're already used to.

What if while playing a stealth or cover-based game like SPlinter Cell or Gears, you could use Natal's bodymapping to peak around corners and flip your nightvision on/off by throwing your chin up?  That would free up button on your controller that could be better used for other ingame actions.

Little tweaks and additions to the game controls we're already used to could actually make gaming a lot more interesting, instead of a lot more casual.  Also, it would be awesome to be able to use Natal optionally, being able to adjust your controls in the game options like we already do.  Natal doesn't have to mean the death of the controller, it could actually be used to improve it.

Fable III is to be shown publicly for the first time at an event in San Francisco next month.

The news comes via a Tweet from Lionhead community man, Sam Van Tilburgh, who said: "I'm writing storyboard summaries for two new #Fable3 videos".

He added: "videos are to come out when we show #Fable3 for the 1st time at an event next month in SF." We'll make sure we get all the news from the scene.

Did you treat your kid well in Fable II? Did you take care of them? Feed them? Clothe them? Give their mother plenty of money for when you're off hunting gargoyles, digging treasure or satisfying the whims of those annoying demon doors? Or did you father multiple sprogs with multiple wenches, kill your demanding other half rather than pay her any maintenance money, then fart in your child's face, laughing heartily as social services took the traumatised toddler off your hands? Er, us neither.

Whatever you did - whatever kind of saintly or devilish hero you were - we hope you're content with your behaviour, because soon Fable III will ask you to live with those consequences.

 
As the child of the previous game's hero, you've either spent your childhood loved and mollycoddled - if you played Fable II as a goody-two-shoes - or abandoned, malnourished, horned and bullied for your veiny blue skin. The decisions you made, and the person you became, will be passed onto your offspring, who can then choose whether to live up to your terrible/heroic legacy, or whether to head in completely the opposite direction.

With your burden (or gift) dictating their initial appearance, and thus the reaction they'll elicit from the kingdom's inhabitants, Fable III's new hero has to explore Albion once again - but this time, as a revolutionary. Fable III is split into two halves. The first sees you growing up as an idealist unhappy with the current ruler of Albion, and determined to oust the monarch from the throne. But armies need people, and people need to be convinced if they're going to fight for your cause. And in order to convince them, promises need to be made...

Overthrowing a king is a lot like a general election. People make pledges they aren't going to keep - even if they intended to keep them at the time - as they tour the country, shaking the Great Unwashed by their smelly proletarian hands. The first half of the game has you doing exactly that: going up to Albion's general public and promising to make their lives better when you become king or queen - in return for them lending a hand in the fight to attain it. You'll be able to shake their hands, too, thanks to the game's new touchy feely expression system. But we'll get round to that in just a moment...

In the fifty years since the events of Fable II, Albion has headed further down the path of industrialisation, and the result is a land with a greater rich-poor divide than ever before. The paupers of Bowerstone are forced into ghettos, as the elite settle snugly into their vast mansion homes. Put simply, there is injustice everywhere you cast an eye. In such a politically charged climate, it probably won't be too difficult to find support and gather an army capable of seizing the crown - the hard part comes when you finally have it.


 
Fable III's second half charts your reign as king or queen of Albion. Rather than the mock monarch you could be in the second game - if you bought every piece of land in the kingdom, you were rewarded with a crown, robes and a fancy title - Fable III lets you indulge in every kingly/queenly act you can think of, from sending your subjects to prison for no good reason to distributing the crown's wealth as you see fit. You'll still be able to wander round the kingdom, smacking bandits and looking for silver keys, but it's now backed up by a more evolved version of Fable II's sim elements - rather than simply buying everything in sight, you're able to shape the very nature of Albion.

Say your castle is looking a bit grim. You could spend your kingdom's limited resources on sprucing it up, but then you'd have no money left to attend to all the other items left on your royal to-do list - like going to war with other nations, or keeping all those promises you made.

Ah yes, the promises. For some bizarre reason, The People want you to uphold your pledges, rather than sticking your fingers in your ears and chopping off their whining heads instead. It's up to you whether you honour or ignore these promises, but you'll soon learn that life as a monarch isn't as straightforward as you imagined it to be - in order to ensure the smooth running of the kingdom, compromises have to be made. It's Fable's customary morality system taken to another level: rather than being good or bad simply for the hell of it, you'll be forced into making the kind of tough moral choices that real leaders have to make all the time.

When you need to take a break, why not pass judgement on your subjects? According to Peter Molyneux, you'll be able to go up to any Albion inhabitant involved in a crime and 'pass judgement' on their life, initiating a side quest where their friends, family and co-workers present evidence about their misdeeds. You can either judge the perp on the spot, letting them off or throwing them in jail, or you can investigate their life in more detail, in order to make a more informed decision (and presumably get more cash or XP as a result).

The expression system has been removed, replaced with something called 'Touch'. Rather than farting, Cossack dancing or clucking like a chicken (which would seem a bit odd as the ruler of Albion) you'll now hug, snog or shake people by the hand.

Apparently, this is because Lionhead "didn't feel like there was a connection in Fable II. The characters felt separate from the world." So you'll now be able to hold anyone's hand, for instance, taking a loved one to a cliffside to watch the beautiful sunset, or dragging a cute child from a burning house - reassuring the brat afterwards with a soppy hug. Lionhead are calling this 'Dynamic Touch'. "Imagine being able to embrace your own child," Peter said, explaining the concept. Well... we'd rather not embrace anyone else's.

It's another ambitious evolution of the Fable experience, then. But with every title Lionhead edge closer to their original goal with the series once known as Project Ego. The second game let you have another life - bearing children, getting a job or playing the property game - but Fable III just might let you live it, thanks to the new touch gestures and the chance to actually change the world in a meaningful way. Lionhead put it another way: when developing Fable II they were "still learning the art - but this time we're taking it seriously".

i just went around eating celery to avoid the stupid fat thing, i hadn't realised it until you said but it is a bit easy. i still like it though

Lionhead's Peter Molyneux has revealed that Fable 3 is entering the final stages of development.

Speaking to Develop, Molyneux made the claim when asked what he is "working on right now".

"Fable III which is almost at its final edit," he replied.

He also admitted that the game he most wishes he worked on is Half Life 2 and that the company he most admires is Valve.

Molyneux, who created PC title Black And White, went on to list lack of innovation as his biggest disappointment within the games industry.

Fable 3 is due to be released for the Xbox 360 later on this year.

Peter Molyneux has told CVG that unrestricted gore will be part of Fable III.
"Violence is part of the combat," Molyneux explains. "We spent a long time thinking of the teen audience, and we decided [ensuring Fable III would be available to teens] was a very hard goal to aim for, if the game was to have any sense of freedom to it.

"It's very simple: We listened to the Fable community. We found the more evil players wanted more gore and the 'good' players didn't. They can make their own choices - and their weapon is aligned to that."

It's a good idea, evil players have lots of gore and good players don't. I also think the environments should also reflect your moral alignment too. If you own a lot of property in a certain town and your evil then it too should look all malevolent.

Stephen Fry returns in Fable 3
Lionhead confirms Reaver is back

Lionhead Studios has confirmed that veteran actor and national treasure Stephen Fry is reprising his performance as Reaver in Fable 3.

The news was posted to the company's Twitter feed, with a photo of the man himself.

At this point we'd like to explain what role Fry played in the first game, but it turns out that nobody in the office actually found him the first time round. The Fable Wiki comes to our rescue: he plays Reaver, a pirate "blessed with eternal youth... his immortality comes from a deal he made with the Shadow Court: they will keep him young with sacrifices of other peoples' youth."

Sounds like a lovely chap.

I liked Reaver in Fable II.  I think he was actually my favorite character in the game.  I was disappointed that the game concluded roughly 30-60 minutes after I met him.  I was hoping for more.

John Cleese to play butler in Fable III

Peter Molyneux has revealed that comedy legend John Cleese is providing a voiceover for Fable III.

The announcement was made during Molyneux's speech at the Game Developers Conference. He showed the audience how the pause menu from previous Fable games is being replaced with a set of rooms your character can wander around, accessed at any time by pressing the start button.

These include a dressing room where you can see clothes displayed on mannequins, rather than presented in a list you have to scroll through. In the room is a butler, who Molyneux described as being like a cross between P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves and Albert from Batman.

"We were inspired by the idea that people kept saying we were making this game with Monty Pythonesque humour, so we got John Cleese as your butler," Molyneux said. Apparently the butler will lay out your clothes, picking a suitable outfit depending on where you are in the game's story - so fancy robes if you've made it to the role of king, for example.

"We have recorded a vast amount of AI dialogue and having John Cleese big you up in a slightly sarcastic way is absolutely wonderful," added Molyneux. "He is an absolutely fantastic character."

He added that he hopes that 25-30 percent more people will play Fable 3, explaining Lionhead's plans to craft Fable 3 as more of an action-adventure title -- a genre which tends to perform better than RPGs. The overall goal for Lionhead is to sell more than five million copies of Fable 3. According to Molyneux, Fable 3 needs to sell that many in order to "be part of the big boys, the big blockbusters."

Peter Molyneux has made it clear that Fable 3 is ditching as much of the 2D interface from Fable 2 as possible. Speaking at GDC, he finally showed us exactly how Lionhead will achieve this. According to Molyneux, Microsoft user research revealed that a majority of Fable 2 players understood fewer than half of the features in the game. "We're creating content that people literally don't care about," said Molyneux.

To help rectify this, Fable 3's menu system is managed entirely from within the game world. When players pause the game, their character is instantly warped to a chamber with different rooms that serve different functions. Molyneux specifically demonstrated the dressing room, where players will change clothes. Molyneux contrasted the process with that of Fable 2, in which changing outfits was like "going in the morning and choosing index cards to choose what you wear."

In the dressing room, the player's butler -- played by the inimitable John Cleese -- will have several outfits arranged on different mannequins. According to Molyneux, the outfits should be appropriate to what the character is doing in the game. For example, if your character is going to meet with dignitaries -- you are the king, remember -- you can expect to see some appropriately frilly outfits. Fable fashionistas need not fear, as Molyneux explained that players can still mix and match elements from different outfits -- the interface for this resembles the one used in Grand Theft Auto IV.

We were then shown how the game's map system will work and, honestly, it's pretty slick. A pedestal in the middle of the "pause room" acts as the map. When selected, players can move a magnifying glass over the land of Albion, as well as the new continent of Aurora, and then zoom in on different regions. When zoomed in, players are presented with a fully 3D, interactive version of the town. According to Molyneux, the world simulation is "fully turned on" in the map, which he demonstrated by zooming all the way to the front of the player's house, where his wife and daughter could be clearly seen.

Finally, Molyneux discussed the combat and Fable 3's new weapon morphing system. The enemies you kill, the number of kills, whether you kill innocents or evil people, even your Gamerscore affects the look of the game's weapons. Molyneux stated that one of the goals of Fable 3  is for all players to have truly unique weapons. Said weapons, incidentally, can actually be sold online as well. The combat itself looks essentially the same as it was in Fable 2, although the bullet time effect produced by weapon flourishes seems a bit more pronounced this time around.

Molyneux also explained earlier in the panel that weapons directly affect a character's appearance as well. He noted that many players, particularly women, didn't like the way that character morphing was handled in Fable 2. Specifically, he stated that women didn't like that leveling up their strength resulted in characters that looked like "1970s Russian shot-putters." In Fable 3, character morphing is based entirely on a player's actions. Use heavy weapons like hammers and you'll get big and beefy. Use more guns and you'll become taller and lither. Eat food and you'll gain weight.

Based on what we saw during the demonstration, Fable 3 improves upon the more tedious aspects of Fable 2. We'll just have to wait to see whether they help a majority of players understand more  than half the game this time around. Maybe we'll find out at GDC 2011.

Fable III has no combat for 30 mins

Peter Molyneux is in a pickle: he's worried that having no combat during the first half-hour of Fable III could be a problem.

"Been playing the opening of Fable III," Tweeted the Lionhead boss (http://twitter.com/pmolyneux/status/10717290883). "I am slightly worried that there is no combat for the first 30 mins. Is this too long? Thoughts."

Fable II began with the main character as a child, playing with her sister in the city of Bowerstone - and more importantly getting to grips with the controls.

How Fable III will begin we do not know. The first-half of the game will be spent rising up against and overthrowing evil King Logan, after which the rule of Albion will become your task.

One of Molyneux's ambitious new features for the games is a touch system where heroes can physically drag other characters around the game world. There may be no combat for the first 30 minutes of Fable III, but we expect there'll be plenty of touching.

Jonathan Ross, an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services in broadcasting, first mentioned role-playing game Fable III in May 2009. He said he "got asked" to do a voice in Fable III. What was his answer?

Via Twitter, Ross tweeted hours ago, "Gotta go. Am doing Fable3 today! What larks, Pip!" This isn't official confirmation, but it's from the man himself.

Ross's mention of Fable III was the first utterance of the title, which was officially revealed later that year.

Set fifty years after Fable II, Fable III will return to the mythical Albion setting and be released in late 2010.

Ben Kingsley to appear in Fable III

Veteran actor Sir Ben Kingsley has signed up to provide a voiceover for Fable III.

"I'm a voice in a new videogame shortly - Fable III," he told CVG. "I'm a wonderful wizard character who is the king of Mist Peak."

According to Kingsley, "It's very energising and good for us actors to realise that [acting] is so diverse now. [Games] are as big a jump now as I suppose when cinema was invented, when people went from the stage to the cinema thinking: It's not really acting, is it? Now, it's videogames - and it is acting. It's very demanding."

Kingsley joins the likes of John Cleese and Jonathan Ross in signing up for Fable III.

Worry not, Neato. Lionhead has a lot of respect in my book, and since I'm a sucker for ambitious game design plans if anyone can turn me around on the game it is the hype-anator Peter Molyneux.

Peter Molyneux has pointed to the Grand Theft Auto series as a major influence on Fable III.

The Lionhead boss and his team have scrapped the traditional Start button menu in the game in favour of The Sanctuary - a collection of rooms you can walk into to see clothes, maps and more.

Speaking in a new interview (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=254653), Molyneux told CVG that Rockstar's open world series was a great influence on this and other areas of the game.

"I think things like Grand Theft Auto [have influenced us] - the way they use shops rather than doing lists is great," he said. "We've used some of that, especially in The Sanctuary area. I just feel the way that entertainment is going is trying to give us less and less complexity or 'fiddly-ness' and more accessibility."

Molyneux promised fans that Kinect connectivity in the game wouldn't be wasted on "some crass mini-game where you jump around and kick chickens", adding that:

"Sitting back and playing with your controller and then accessing Kinect as you do that just gives you cool stuff."

Fable III is due to be released on October 26 for Xbox 360, with Molyneux promising the PC version "a few days later".

Lionhead boss talks size

Peter Molyneux has claimed that Fable III contains a bigger game world than that found in any other Microsoft Games Studios title.

Molyneux would know, of course - as well as being boss of Fable creator Lionhead, he also heads up MGS worldwide as creative director.

His claim would leave Fable III with a bigger world than the latest instalments in the Halo, Crackdown or Gears Of War series.

"Fable, because it is part-simulation, part-role-playing game, part-action-adventure... it's got more voice acting, a bigger cast, more musical scores, a bigger, freer world - more so than any other game in the whole of Microsoft Game Studios' portfolio, full stop," he told GamesIndustry.biz.

"It's got more bugs, more active bugs, than any game that MGS has ever had in its history - and the team of over 100 people are working insanely long hours, and they're coming down. That's the way it is."

Fable III won't see the return of Pub Games, Peter Molyneux has told Joystiq.
Molyneux had harsh words for Pub Games, calling the infamous gold glitch that allowing players to kick off Fable II absolutely loaded a "disaster" and says it will be ditched for the third game.

In its place will be a new tie-in, which will be revealed a few weeks ahead of the game's launch in October. What will it be? Kinect support won't arrive until after Fable III is launched, so it's nothing to do with that...

Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux has told OXM that the studio has dropped one of the Xbox Live features from Fable 3 because of a shortage of resources.
When the game was first announced, it was to include an advanced form of weapon trading: weapons would evolve depending on how you use them and the size of your Gamerscore, and you would then be able to trade the custom weapons online.

No longer, we were told at Gamescom. The weapon customisation and evolution is all present, but the auction system proved too much. "The burden of running this online auction server became a burden too many," said Molyneux.

"It was on our list of features to do, but we had the choice of doing the main co-op right, and balancing the game, or we could do the trading house. And we decided to do the co-op."

You can still trade weapons, but you have to do it one-on-one with people on your Friends list: as in Fable 2, they appear as orbs within your world which you can interact with. Or you can haul them in as a henchman using the aforementioned co-op; any loot or skills you earn can be taken back into your game.

If, and it's a great big giant massive if, it delivers on even half of the Hype King's promises it'll be the greatest game ever made, but as we all know nothing ever comes of Molyneux's claims so we'll just have to make do with a good game or something.......  :)

Kingmaker, a Smartphone application for Fable III, will launch next week reports CVG.
The description for the application reads: "The kingdom of Albion is in turmoil. Two rival armies are fighting for total dominion: the tyrant king's Royals and the revolutionary Rebels. And now the battle has spilled onto the wretched streets of Great Britain! For this is where the wondrous world of Fable meets the real world. Where the battleground is your town, and your only weapon is your smartphone."

"Your mission, should you be foolish enough to accept it, is to plant virtual flags for the Royals or the Rebels, and claim power-ups in locations throughout the United Kingdom... For every flag you plant, and every power up you claim, you shall earn gold coins, which you shall then be able to transfer into the Fable III game on your Xbox 360!"

October 1st is listed as the release date for Kingmaker while while the game itself is due on October 26th.

Tit-for-tat arguments over which console has the best exclusive software are par for the course amongst gamers - and even fearsomely loyal execs at Sony and Microsoft.

But there's at least one first party developer that's gracious enough to give the competition the respect it deserves: Lionhead.

Speaking to CVG, the Microsoft-owned studio's senior design director Josh Atkins revealed the two games that were the biggest influences on the development of Fable 3 (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=259856) - and they're both PS3 exclusives.

Atkins credits Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain and Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2 will inspiring Fable 3's storytelling and decision-making mechanic.

"Interestingly, we were all very involved with and all played Heavy Rain," he said. "We all have a lot of respect for David Cage and the guys at Quantic Dream. It's a very unique experience and a very compelling story - and there's a lot of deep gameplay there.

"Another one we talk a lot about is Uncharted 2. That blend of cinema and great gameplay was something we were certainly very influenced by."

He added: "I think you'll see... there's influence [from Heavy Rain] without question in how our interaction systems work and in how all [the player's] decisions work.

"There was many things we liked about that game, but one of the key things that they did was that the decisions you made rooted into the game world. Your eyes are always fixated on the game world - you're not looking down at the interface.

"The weaving of decision and story in Heavy Rain is another one. You saw the beginnings of that with Farrenheit, and they've taken it much further.

"With Uncharted, it really comes down to the blend of gameplay, cinema and acting - particularly the superb voice acting in that game."

Atkins also credited classic puzzler Peggle as an influence. "I know it sounds funny, but it's our job to look at the simple addiction of a game like that," he said. "It's a game we spend a lot of time playing ourselves."

Fable III is released in the UK on October 29 for Xbox 360. A PC version will follow in December.

Fable 2 was actually a big let down for me. It wasn't bad, but it felt way too similar to the first game. It felt old and not at all fresh; a sinking Halo sequel sort of feeling. All of the stuff that should should have been fixed from the first game was completely ignored and instead they slapped in stuff that nobody wanted, like a pointless dog and farting minigames.

And don't get me started on the awful coop. You know what? Awful coop sounds like an oxymoron, but somehow they managed it in Fable 2. And Super Mario Bros Wii, but I digress.

Still, the first game built so much good will in me that I have to be on board for Fable 3.

The main problem with Fable III is that, minute to minute, we had thoughts ranging from "oh, this is quite good" to "Wow, that was awesome" down to "Well that's just stupid" all the way over to "WHAT THE ***" and back again. Fable III  is a mix of oddities mixed in with moments of greatness tempered by disappointment, which has really stemmed from Molyneux himself - both from his desire to push the boundaries of the RPG experience and his own hype. In Fable II the problems were more technical and functional, and were easily hidden underneath some added depth, but this time, it's not something that can be as easily brushed aside.

I am really unsure about whether to get this or not. I enjoyed Fable II but all the "hype" surrounding the Fable III 'experience' has put me off, plus I have Fallout: New Vegas to work through. Will I be able to resist buying it though when I see it on the shelf in Asda on Friday though?

I tried co-op for the first time last night.  It's worlds improved over Fable II, but still not good.

It may have been a bad connection with my partner, but the glitches & lag made it impossible to enjoy.  Cutscenes would stutter & repeat.  Hit detection is virtually non-existant.  Melee attacks worked 50% of the time, firearm attacks worked 10%.  I eventually had to resort to just spamming the fire spell.

On the plus side, the co-op experience didn't seem to have any affect on my single-player playthrough, as it did on Fable II.  When I went back to my single-player playthrough, I started right where I had left off before trying co-op.  I did keep all of the gold & experience I earned in co-op, but I think I may have lost some of the clothing articles I aquired in co-op.

Has anyone else tried Fable III co-op?

Okay, I'm going to live in this thread for quite a while because this game boggles my mind so much.

First of all, for all the hype that the "touching" feature recieved it isn't worth any of it. At certain times it feels silly and forced (like when I'm leading a grown man by the hand through a forest. Why can't he just follow me?), and even at best it doesn't actually add anything to the game. Why did they hype it so much? I just don't get it.

Next, the economy of the game is somehow even *worse* than Fable 2. The second Fable's economy was broken because you could buy some real estate and stop playing for a week, then when you came back you would have enough gold waiting for you that you never had to worry about it again.

In Fable 3 the economy problems are two fold: 1) You can make ridiculous amounts of money just by playing the lute or baking pies, and 2) there is nothing to spend the piles and piles of money you make on. Seriously, at this point I am just buying in-game real estate for the sake of buying in-game real estate because I have all this money and there is nothing to buy in the game. They simplified the shops to the point where most of them only sell one or two items, most of which don't cost much. And because they made it so that your weapon grows along with your character, which is admittedly a cool feature, there is almost no point in buying a new weapon (and there are far fewer to buy than in the previous games).

But the biggest offense this game has given me is the difficulty level. Plainly put, there is no way you can lose in this game. There have been no close calls in any of the fights. The challenge is rendered even moot-er-er by the fact that you have enough money on hand at all times to buy a gazillion potions. I have about 30 in my inventory right now (though I can't be sure, which I'll get to later), but I've barely had to use them anyway.

The game feels like it is holding my hand way too damn much. Everything is simplified to the point that it is bland and boring. The combat is in that one-button style of Fable 2, but they made the magic/shooting/melee combinations more streamlined so it is even easier than before. Even the task of drinking potions to restore your health is guided for you by the game. If you are taking hits in a fight you can't just drink your potions willy nilly. No, the game has to decide when you are hurt enough and then recommends that you drink up with the d-pad.

They also simplified the social minigames. Apparantly timing a button press to fart on someone's face was too hard, so now all social "minigames" are just a matter of holding down A until the game tells you to release it. At this point, why can't I just press A? Why do I have to hold it down and release it? It isn't like I'll ever even possibly fail that minigame.

That reminds me, there is no UI at all in the game. All actions are now context sensitive. So, remember how you could buy a bunch of beer at the tavern and give it to townspeople and get them all drunk? You can't do that now. You have to wait for the game to tell you when you can use any of the consumable items that you buy including food, potions, and alcohol. You can't even give a gift to your wife (who is just as useless and pointless as she was in the last two games) this time around unless she specifically asks for one. And because there are no menus, I literally have no idea what is in my inventory. Luckily, 90% of all the crap you pick up (gems, rings, jewelry) is useless now because you can't give it away without someone asking for it specifically first, so you might as well not even know that you have it.

You also don't have a health bar. If you think that maybe this is dangerous because you won't know if you are dying, don't. Lionhead's solution for this is to give you more health than you possibly know what to do with, and when you actually are in danger of getting knocked down then the game, as previously mentioned, reminds you to drink a health potion.

Total hand holding.

I'm reminded of something Peter Molyneux said about Fable 2. He said that if you put the game in the hands of someone who has never picked up a game before and let them play, then they will be able to get right into the game with minimal difficulty and have a good time. Well, back when Fable 2 was new I tested that theory out on my then girlfriend, who had never played a game before. The theory failed as she struggled to get the camera under control and remember what all of the buttons did. And she was a giant whore, but I digress.

The point is, I think maybe Peter saw how Fable 2 wasn't as accessible as he wanted it to be, and so he went all out in making Fable 3 the easiest, casual-i-est game he possibly could. And I suppose he succeeded... In making the most bland, unchallenging game I've played in a long time.

NOW... Onto the good stuff. The script and dialogue are awesome. Like, possibly the best I've seen in a game. John Cleese's butler character, particularly, is a joy to be around, and I can't wait to hear what he has to say next.

The combat, even if it is too easy, looks really cool, and it is a lot of fun stringing together magic with melee and gun attacks. The finishers are also really nifty, even if they seem to come out randomly.

Even though the social minigames are simplified into pointlessness, they actually made the social dynamic itself a bit more involved when it comes to getting people to really like you, which is good. In the old Fable games, if you walked into the middle of town and started flexing your muscles you could get everyone in shouting distance to literally fall in love with your character. This time you have to personally interact with each character you want to win favor with, and relationships come in stages (ie: stranger, friend, close friend, marriage). Each stage of your relationship is punctuated with a little subquest specific to that person. It makes building relationships more work, and makes that part of the game a little more rewarding than before.

Overall, what can I say? For all the railing I'm doing against it, I'm still playing the hell out of it. There is a lot of fun to be had here, but I can't help but wish that the game would throw a little challenge my way here or there, and not hold my hand and baby me so much.

I'll have more to hate on as I get a little further into the game. PREPARE!

I haven't tried the coop yet. I can't imagine it would go smoothly though. The game's framerates dip all the time as is.

Great look at the game, it won't change my opinion of what a game i have never played will be like, just generally reinforced my belief that it would have been too easy and i wouldn't enjoy all the buying houses and making people in towns like me. I just wanna kill ogres.

I will probably play it and just try and stick to the main story line.

Fantastic synopsis, Shakes.  I could not agree more with everything you touched on.

After roughly 3 hours into Fable III, I realized I was no longer in the "tutorial" portion of it even though it still felt like it.  There is a lot of fun to be had, but some of the changes they've made boggles the mind.  It can only be enjoyed if you manage to turn the experienced gamer part of your brain off and stop asking questions.  I'm just going with it now, and having much better time.

For the record, I don't want to dissuade anybody from buying this game. You all know me, and know how hard I am to please when it comes to games. I'm just throwing out observations as they come to me about the game. After all I've said the game is still very much a Fable game, and if you liked the previous two games you will still enjoy Fable 3.

It most certainly has been dumbed down a lot almost to the point that it is linear unless you force yourself out of the mould.
This does have it's issues too btw.

I wanted to amass more guild seals before hitting the Road to Rule and at the moment as a result can't find a way to manually get back to it......frustrating or possibly where I've missed something.

It is a bit linear on all of the social interaction too but I can see there are millions of things possible.....just if you can be bothered.
New map is a nice thing in the sanctuary but it occasionally gets confused by the pressing start sometimes doing different things.....
It's also got lag! offline!

Did not expect that one.....


and whats with the underlying chicken theme......???

Still all good though and I've stopped playing DR2 for it so can't be bad....

I think I put in about 20 hours or so before I beat the game, and that was with a TON (5 hours or so) of putsing around at the end to get some cash(without spoiling anything, you have to raise a mother load of money to get a certain ending).

Hopefully that's not a problem for me.  I'm a real estate tycoon, currently brining in roughly 1000 gold every 5 minutes.  I only own 2 regions so far, many more to come.

i actually think im gonna give this a miss. my first xbox experience was fable, it was definately my initiation , tough to play, fighting was a bitch, but the story line was amazing, i think they should combine the toughness of fable 1 with the playability and fun aspect of the second one, there you go-perfect game

I think I have 7 or 9 hours play time so far but using it to find every single quest possible.....even the crappy relationship ones......want all the seals!

It does feel a little flimsy though and still cant get used to the fact that they've removed all lists and stuck them in the sanctuary......

but annoying as it slows it all down!!

First batch of Fable III DLC dated

Understone, the first batch of proper Fable III DLC, will be released on 23rd November, Microsoft has said.

It'll cost 400 Microsoft Points.

Microsoft's Live community man Graeme Boyd tweeted that Understone will be set in a secret underworld beneath Bowerstone. Could this be linked to the gargoyles in Fable II?

Also coming are the Fable III pre-order bonuses: the hairstyle pack for 160 MSP and the five-star dog potion for 80 MSP.

Microsoft has announced that all Fable 3 Kingmaker  players will be receiving a "Christmas bonus" this year.

You can look forward to a 50,000 gold lump sum entering your account by January 4th, at which point it will automatically be deposited into your Fable 3 game.

Not only that, but those of you who are on the winning team in your country will receive an extra 50,000 and people on the winning team for the Battle of Europa will receive an extra 100,000. Essentially you've got a 50/50 chance of each.
