Title: Gears of War: Judgment
Post by: GamerMan316 on May 31, 2012, 12:12:43 PM
Gonna post this here until we get more news:

July Cover Revealed: The Next Gears Of War

Usually, we like to reveal the name and final cover art for our upcoming issue's cover story the Thursday before it hits subscribers. This time we're saving the full unveiling of the game's title until Monday during Microsoft's E3 press conference, but we can confirm that our next cover is the new installment in the Gears of War series and is coming to Xbox 360. We figure this news and a glimpse of the shrouded Gears of War cover are least some consolation, as the image raises some interesting questions: Who is in chains, and where?

Take your time trying to decipher clues about the next game in the Gears of War universe, and check back on Monday when we fully pull back the curtain on both (yes, we said "both") of our covers. Also waiting for you on Monday is a teaser trailer jammed with sneak peeks at our month of online Gears of War coverage. As always, you can learn more about Epic's new game in the following weeks with a wealth of online videos, articles, and interviews that will populate our upcoming Gears of War hub, including an exclusive and extensive first look here at Game Informer that hits Monday morning. You don't want to miss it.

I'd venture to guess someone's getting their Pendulum Wars Prequel... but that's just a shot in the dark here... 8) ;)

Reavers in the background means no Pendulum Wars prequel, I can still hope though!   :)

So who do we think the guy is? New character? Dom? Let's speculate! I do love E3, hopefully it'll pack a punch with release info this year. Especially now that, SURELY, the kinect hype has simmered down a bit.

Considering the Kinect holds a guiness world record for fastest selling consumer electronic device ever, and that they've sold 19 million of them, I think they'll definitely have plenty of Kinect related things to talk about at E3.

Pretty much guaranteed, proper games will be low down on the list behind crappy motion gaming and even more entertainment rubbish no doubt!

Meh. But, Kade has a point. I didn't actually realise it held a record for its sales. I'm loving the device, I just wish they'd pitch more grown up uses of it. Integration into some of next years games or something, not just a bunch more kids games.

Back on topic, actually very excited to hear about the gears release - and even more so now that the Bulletstorm team are working on it, since I loved the game and was disappointed to hear the sequel was being scrapped.

Gears of War: Judgment revealed - first images
Key characters with younger faces further hint at prequel

So, it's called Gears of War: Judgement and it looks like those prequel rumours were true.

Game Informer had teased its new Gears of War cover earlier today for a full reveal on Monday, but it seems those plans have changed because it's now unleashed the full title and uncensored cover images.

There are two variations of the cover, one showing Damon Baird shackled and being escorted by two soldiers as a Locust battle rages in the background. The other cover is near identical but instead features Augustus "Cole Train" Cole, also shackled.

It looks like the prequel rumours hit the nail on the head because both characters appear a lot younger in the images. But Bulletstorm dev People Can Fly's rumoured involvement in the project is still yet to be confirmed.

GI says to look out for multiplayer details on Monday - and surely a big reveal at E3.

E3 2012: First Gears of War: Judgment Story Details
We have to go back.

Baird, Cole, Garron, and Sofia -- the four members of Gears of War: Judgment's Kilo Squad -- have been "charged for treason because they didn't follow orders, stole equipment, and their actions could end up killing millions of people they swore to protect," an anonymous source told IGN.

This is the premise of Judgment, and the crux of the trailer debuting at Microsoft's E3 press conference on Monday, June 4, where we'll learn officially that the next Gears of War is a prequel to the first game.

Baird and Cole look younger in Judgment because Kilo Squad was only around during the two years following Emergence Day, as far as the Gears of War novel Coalition's End is concerned. E-Day happened 14 years before the first Gears of War, which puts us more than a decade behind Epic's original Gears game, giving us the opportunity to watch their delightful relationship develop. It also leaves Judgment open to introduce a young Marcus Fenix before he gets thrown in the clink for desertion.

Two people new to the Gears canon join Baird and Cole, but we'll need to wait for Monday's E3 trailer to learn more about who they are, how they're connected to these guys, and what role they play in Kilo's treason.

More rumours online, only a few days to wait for confirmation now.   :)

The first detail of Gears of War: Judgment from GameInformer's newest issue have recently been leaked!
There are a few people in NeoGaf forum claiming that the Gears Of War: Judgment first details have been leaked on the internet; some members even said about the game will be featuring flying production (it means people can fly), but is this real? Furthermore, there is a recent message from Mike Capps, President of Epic Games, has hinted the flying production is real on his Twitter's account "Do I detect People Can Fly involvement?” YES YES YES!".

Also, the game has a new mode named Overrun combined by Horde and Beast and more information can be found below:

People can fly production
Baird is in chain (not marcus)
Spin off
KiloSquad Based
Smart Spawn System

i've seen just a couple of pages leaked (and promptly removed by Microsoft ) so i can't be sure but screens suggested third person

as story setting..

definitely after pendulum wars

Some more info:
Prequel focuses on Baird in his earlier years, who apparently has been accused of military crimes.
New to the franchise is class-based gameplay in multiplayer (new gametype).

Apparently there is a new mode called "Overrun" which is Horde and Beast combined.

Epic forum user says it takes place 15 years before Gears 1.

The missions are set a short time after E day, when the Locust first emerged from underground.

More details of the upcoming Xbox 360 exclusive title Gears Of War: Judgment have eventually arrived

Cog classes:

Baird-engineer=Weapons: gnasher and blowtorch,Special abilities: sentry turret, tip: blowtorch repairs damaged fortifications
Cole-soldier= lancer and boomshot, deploy ammo crates, toss amo to engineer to give him infinite blowtorch ammo
Sofia-medic= lancer and snub pistol, stim gas gernade, toss gernade at downed allies to revive them
Garron-scout= longshot and snub, beacon gernade, climb perches for better sniping leverage

Characters bio:

Damon Baird:
Before this sarcastic, genius mechanic went on to help Marcus Fenix save the world, Baird worked his way through the Gears ranks. He’s always quick to joke, but Judgment suggests there’s more to his character than being a comedian.

Augustus Cole:
A former Thrash Ball player turned soldier the "Cole Train" became famous in Sera for his on-feild performance and boisterous demeanour. Cole met Baird soon after enlisting, and the two quickly became best friends.

Garron Paduk:
A miltia refuge from the Union of Independent Republics. Garron comes from the other side of The Pendulum Wars. He brings a new perspective and brush personality to Kilo. Garron is the devil on Baird's shoulder that say's "Let's blow stuff up."

Sophia Hendricks:
A cadet from the onyx guard academy, she is more in line with colonel loomis by the book approach to combat. E-day halted her path to graduation from the academy, but she is still worth the soldier. She is the opposite of Garron, ready to suggest informing superior officers of every deviation from protocol.

What does "Smart Spawn System" mean?

I was kind of hoping that if they absolutely *had* to make another Gears game, it would have nothing at all to do with Marcus and the gang.

I was expecting a prequel of some kind but with other characters but I like Cole & Baird so i'm happy with this.   :)

As for the Smart Spawn System, maybe something to do with not spawning anywhere near an enemy which happens pretty much all the time currently!

Some more info from gearscon.com

Epic has stated that they are looking forward to bringing back the scare of the locust. There is also a new control set up. The changes are LB to throw a grenade, Y to change your primary weapons and hold in Y to get your pistol out. This is all thanks to the games new first-person shooter style control scheme. This may seem extreme to most, but it gets rid of the “clumsy” d-pad control.

There are also various “declassified testimonies” streamed thru out the campaign such as “clearing out droves of Locust in front of the museum in 4 minutes,” “protecting a set of historic COG tags,” or “find and destroy 10 egg clusters laid by the Locust’s Serapedes.” Pile that with the palm sweaty tactics of enemies from before, an entirely new “Smart Spawn System” (or S3 as Rod states) that changes the way the locust will fight in the heat of battle, as well as a new “big bad” enemy that is being kept secret for right now and Gears of War is shaping up to be a whole new experience entirely.

But, what Gears of War game would be complete without a new twist on its multiplayer experience? In Judgment, this is no different with the addition of OverRun. OverRun is a class based, Horde and Beast mode fusion game type that consists of 2 timed five vs five rounds with each team taking a stab at each side of the respective COG and Locust. The COGs must defend 3 key locations, 2 E-holes and 1 Generator. Epic says it plans on replacing the Generator with a Hammer of Dawn beacon in the final game, which if defended successfully, will wipe the Locust off the map. Each time the Locust successfully take control of a sealed E-hole, Kryll will wipe the COG from that point and it will open up a new spawn point for the Locust. If both teams successfully run over the COG defenses and break the Generator, then the team who completed the task the fastest wins. Also, class based abilities will have a 5-15 second cool down after use. On top of that, there will be a leveling system so that you can start out as a better Ticker, Medic, Engineer, etc. More details to come on that as it becomes available.

The testimony of Damon Baird in Gears of War: Judgment

Memory is a fickle thing. You may think one thing, but the reality of the situation in question could be entirely different. Was that thing there? What even was that thing?

In Gears of War Judgment, Lt. Damon Baird is on trial for disobeying COG orders – being a military outfit, they're kind of big on following orders – and must recall the events that lead up to the disobedience in question. His recounting of the events while on trial is the entire campaign, but this being a military trial, certain things are classified. It's an idea that will play out in the campaign: the first time through, certain elements from the game environment will be missing; a second playthrough of the "Declassified" campaign will change events and those in-game elements.

In one example, a gameplay segment could be dramatically altered by the inclusion of a mech, People Can Fly's Adrian Chmielarz explains. So the first time through, Baird may recall pushing through an enemy location with his fellow Kilo Squad. In the second play through, he may have remembered that instead the progress came through the aid of the mech.

It's still too early to show any of this stuff, so for now Epic Games design director Cliff Blezsinski and People Can Fly's Adrian Chmielarz are talking more about what to expect rather than showing it. Another big component of the campaign is adding replay value, doing away with static encounters that play the same way each time. This will be achieved through Gears of War: Judgment's "smart spawning system."

In previous Gears of War games, there would be a trigger location and when the player passed it, emergence holes would open up or Locust would come crashing through a wall or whatever, each time the same event. Chmielarz says changing this will make for more dynamic encounters – it may just mean more enemies spawn or even different enemies, perhaps more difficult to take down than the previous set.

"The story is the downfall of Kilo squad, led by Damon Baird. A base is attacked and Kilo squad tries to deal with it in their own way and things go horribly wrong, then they are put on trial," Chmielarz said. "Kilo squad is Damon Baird and Augustus Cole, 14 years younger. They are thinner and they don't have scars on their faces. But we are also introducing two new characters to the universe: one a red-haired girl named Sophia Hendrick, an Onyx Guard cadet. She's very by-the-book, this sort of an angel on Baird's shoulder. Of course, there's a devil as well: Garron Paduk. He's a UIR (Union of Independent Republics) refugee, the UIR being former enemies of the COG from the Pendulum Wars, and now we see they're all united against the common threat of the Locust. But you can imagine the team dynamics when you have an Onyx Guard and a UIR veteran soldier in the team."

Chmielarz elaborated that the campaign is "a series of flashbacks, a testimony basically of the events leading up to the trial. The first time you play, it's a classified version – if it existed in a written form, there'd be a lot of black ink on it. After you play through it once, you can now unlock the declassified version and sort of learn the full truth behind these events and what really happened over there. So it's the stuff basically that the COG wanted to keep away from the public. Sometimes it's the very existence of an enemy type, like dark wretches – which we know from the lore that these are not exactly Locust – and sometimes it's an ugly truth, like that the COG was about to destroy an area with the Hammer of Dawn strike without first checking if there are any friendly units nearby. Now this stuff is discovered and declassified, so when you play the declassified version of a level, you now have four minutes to leave a level – good luck, you have to kill every Locust to get out of the area in time. This forces you to replay the section in a completely different way."

Chmielarz assured that Gears of War: Judgment would also feature more advanced forms of this feature, where the environment will actually change in the declassified version of a level. "The other thing about the Classification system is that you can also declassify mission details, so in the testimony it's not exactly clear what kind of tools of destruction you have used to achieve your goals. Imagine you play through the game and you literally have these fuzzy items [in the game environment], like 'is it there or not?' We put this cool shader on it and you approach them and you can essentially earn the right to unlock them, and sort of adjust your testimony on the fly. 'Yeah, okay, now I remember it was there.' So imagine Baird, for example, materializing a mech and then going, 'And then we found a mech, so we were lucky, and then this and that happened because we had the mech.' Obviously you would probably perform very well in that section now, and kill a lot of Locust with that mech, so something else will then happen and you will get access to cooler items." Bleszinski added, "It's like a pseudo-narration in parts of the level where you hear the courtroom and things like that."

"I think we have great incentives for you to replay, but we're not talking about this today," Chmeilarz concluded.

Cliff Bleszinski: "Games Have Become More Linear and Easier"

Cliff Bleszinski believes that this generation of titles have become too easy. He doesn’t think games challenge us any more. So with Gears of War: Judgment he’s cranking up the difficulty levels.

Speaking to X360A, the Epic Games Design Director outlined the pitfalls of catering to a broader audience, while detailing the pain we’ll go through in Epic Games and People Can Fly’s upcoming Gears prequel.

“It feels like in this current console generation that we’ve taken a lot of steps to grow the audience and what I think’s happened is that the games have become more linear and easier, so it feels like a lot of quick-time-events,” said Bleszinski.

“The more I play games like that the more I turned off to them and just want to get back to systems interacting with systems, and get back to a game that, you know, when was the last time a game really challenged you and asked something of you, right? There’s a reason why Demon Souls and Dark Souls have taken off lately. It’s because they really require you actually try.”

To help embrace this spirit, Gears of War: Judgment has a few nasty tricks up its sleeve, reckons Bleszinski. Just as in the Souls games he references, you should prepare to die.

“Casual mode will still be casual, whatever, if you just want to see graphics and you don’t want to die,” he said. “But every other mode will be hard in this game and you will die.

“When I played this in 4-player co-op… I mean, I’ve been playing Gears since the beginning of the course and I really have to hunker down and focus, and if my buddies aren’t reviving me, and we aren’t working as a team, you’re going to die, and it’s okay to die a few times in a game to try some different strategies, the S3 respawn system provides unique challenges.”

Not only does this system maintain the challenge, it also means that different players will have different experiences with the game.

“We then get some cool, ‘How did that combat scenario play out for you?’ ‘Oh, I used grenades against this one declassified challenge and then my buddy came in,’ which is interesting and cool, as opposed to, ‘I came around the same exact corner and saw the same exact plane crash, the same exact enemies, there’s nothing unique,’” said Bleszinski.

“There’s nothing unique to you,” added Adrian Chmielarz, People Can Fly’s Creative Director. “This is what we’re trying to provide… your own moments, something that you’ll feel like only happened to you and you figured this out.”

Bleszinski concluded, “If this game doesn’t make you sweat, we haven’t done our jobs.”

Gears of War: Judgment is out next year.

CVG sources: Gears of War Judgement targeted for February release
Prequel to Epic Games' blockbuster trilogy set to launch three months after Halo 4

Microsoft has laid out plans to launch Gears of War Judgement at retail in February 2013, a publishing source close to the matter has confirmed to CVG.

It is understood that an exact Europe and North America release date has not yet been finalised, though February has been earmarked as the target month.

In a statement to CVG, Microsoft said:

"We have not made any announcements updating launch timing for Gears of War: Judgment beyond early 2013. Stay tuned for new details about Gears of War: Judgment to be revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, July 12-15."

Judgement, the highly anticipated prequel to Epic Games' blockbuster trilogy, will follow the story of series mainstays Damon Baird and Augustus 'Cole Train' Cole. The project is being developed as part of a partnership between BulletStorm studio People Can Fly as well as Epic Games' in-house North Carolina team.

Microsoft shipped around 18 million copies of the Gears of War trilogy to retail, cementing the game as one of the biggest blockbusters of this generation.

Poland based outfit People Can Fly, which in 2007 Epic acquired a majority stake of, has in recent years worked on the PC edition of Gears of War and had contributed to the development of its sequel.

Yesterday, retailer ShopTo listed Gears of War Judgement for a February 8th release date, though a spokesperson later clarified to CVG that the listing was an estimate.

Just imagine the next time you play a new Gears after Judgement will be on the next machine :)
I  guarantee ya this dynamic mob spawn stuff is in preparation for some even bigger and nastier Gears action in the future.

Bissell and Auten Writing Gears of War: Judgment, Traviss Out

Epic Games has announced that Gears of War: Judgment is being written by Extra Lives author Tom Bissell and Rob Auten. The duo replace sci-fi scribe Karen Traviss who who was responsible for the series' third installment.

Last year sci-fi author Traviss revealed that she actively avoids playing games in order to approach her work “cold.” She also wrote the Gears of War spin-off novels.

“I have an obsessive personality and it’s taken all my strength not to buy the FIFA game. The thing about Gears, and the thing about anything I work on, is that I must come to it cold. The less I know about something, the better,” she said.

Of the two new Judgment writers, Tom Bissell should be most familiar to gamers. He wrote Extra Lives: Why Videogames Matter, where he discusses - amongst other things - his dual addiction to GTA and cocaine.

Auten, meanwhile, has worked alongside James Cameron on Avatar and two games in the Aliens franchise.

Gears of War: Judgment is out early next year.

Gears of War Judgment Release Date Announced

Today at Comic Con during the Gears of War panel it was announced that Gears of War: Judgment is coming on March 19, 2013.

Before the rise of the Lambent, the sinking of Jacinto or the detonation of the Lightmass bomb, there was Emergence Day – when the Locust horde burst from the ground and set Sera on a path toward near annihilation. Gears of War: Judgment brings players back to the terrifying aftermath of E-Day, before the events of the Gears trilogy, for the most intense and challenging Gears game yet.

Get ahead of the game and learn the essentials of OverRun’s new class-based competitive gameplay through the OverRun tutorial video released today. Narrated by Damon Baird, players will see the required skills they need to defend as a COG or attack as a Locust.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fvdf8tuBrI8

Written by Tom Bissell (journalist and author of “Extra Lives”) and Rob Auten, Gears of War: Judgment follows Kilo Squad, led by fan-favorite characters Damon Baird and Augustus “The Cole Train” Cole, as they defy orders and attempt to rescue the city of Halvo Bay from destruction at the hands of the Locust onslaught.

Also today, the all-new “Island” map was revealed.

Island takes place on an archipelago of islands off the coast of Halvo Bay, which serves as a supply and refueling depot that feeds the larger military machine along the coast.  The individual islands are connected by a series of bridges and tunnels, forming a network of unknown size and security.  This is restricted territory, and civilians are not permitted on, or even near, any of the islands.

Epic shares Gears of War insight and trivia at Comic-Con panel

Cliff Bleszinski, Design Director at Epic Games, along with Production Director Rod Fergusson, voice actor Fred Tatasciore (the voice of Baird as well as "most of the Locusts") and writers Rob Auten and Tom Bissell all took the stage at Comic-Con 2012 for a panel about Gears of War: Judgment. The biggest piece of news out of the panel was that Judgment has a release date: We'll be killing grubs as Baird in the prequel on March 19.

The rest of the panel, however, contained a few juicy bits of Gears trivia, just for fans of the series. If you've lived and died with the COGs for three games now, read on.

A Next Generation Bayonet

The Lancer, that franchise's iconic chainsaw machine gun, wasn't created for Gears initially. "I wanted to see this gun in '98," said Bleszinski.

At the time, Epic was working on Overkill, and Bleszinski said he asked, "What would be the next generation of a bayonet?" The answer was a chainsaw on the end of a gun, and he showed off a few different design variations of the weapon, including one with a circular chainsaw tagged on to the end, and one that flipped out like a switchblade.

Healing from a Distance

Bleszinski thought of creating a pistol that could heal allies and revive people from a distance, but Fergusson shot it down after it was tested for a while. "I'd rather shoot people than heal people with a gun," he said.

Bleszinski got the last laugh, however: The idea has been implemented in Judgment, more or less, with the introduction of a healing grenade that also revives anyone it hits.

The Roly Poly Ticker

Another idea that never made it into the series was an armored ticker - a rolling, armor-protected version of Gears' annoying little self-destructive imps.

A video was shown with the armored ticker attacking Marcus Fenix in a test level. Though bullets bounced off of it, the force pushed the ticker away. In the end, said Fergusson, an armored ticker didn't feel as satisfying or as dangerous as the explosive one.

Fun Wins

One fan asked, if Gears of War: Judgment is a prequel, why there are more advanced versions of standard series weapons included in Baird's upcoming game. "We know that the chainsaw lancer did not exist at the time of Judgment [in the existing lore], but it will exist in the game," Bleszinski answered. Why is that? "Fun wins."

Fergusson agreed, saying that if there was ever a time where something that would be fun in the game bumped up against something more boring like continuity or reality, "fun wins." That's a rule the Gears series has had for a while, and it'll remain the case with Judgment.

Torque Bow Replica Incoming

In the past, Epic has released Gears of War replica weapons alongside new games, as pre-order bonuses or as separate purchases. The Lancer was created for real-life in this way, and the retro Lancer was the most recent special creation. Another fan asked during Q&A if there was another weapon tapped for Judgment.

Fergusson said there weren't any official releases planned, but that the replica creators for Epic were working on creating a "lifesized torque bow." At first, they'll just be creating it for Epic's own promotional use, but there's a chance that a torque bow replica will be available to sale to the public at some point.

Gears on the Big Screen

And finally, a fan asked about the Gears of War movie that's been a perpetual rumor around the series. Bleszinski confirmed that planning had slowed down a bit, but that he and Epic Games were aiming to restart the push closer to the end of this year.

New Multiplayer Mode Coming to Gears of War: Judgment

People Can Fly and Epic Games have cooked up a new multiplayer mode for next year’s Gears of War: Judgment.

The upcoming prequel will feature something called “Free for All” mode, which sounds like boring old Deathmatch but could prove to be a little more interesting.

In a teaser for the publication’s next issue, OXM US described the new mode by saying, “Judgment aims to blur the line between friend and foe when the new match type debuts next year.”

A full reveal of the mode is promised in the mag's next cover story, with the first image shown as a tease on the website. We’ve popped it below.

So what could “Free for All” mode be? OXM wouldn’t put a Deathmatch reveal on the front cover, would it? Fingers crossed for something a little more inventive.

Gears of War: Judgment is out on March 19th, 2013

Them saying blur the line between friend and foe makes me think that teams swap throughout the match. So one minute you're in a crowd of team mates, then suddenly half of them are enemies.

...Or, and this might seem like a slight stretch, but who knows. How about a "Fragile Alliance" - a la Kane & Lynch, leaving room for some back-stabbing and rogue Gear-play?

From Epic:

Gears of War: Judgment Free-For-All Mode Announced!

Debuting and playable this week at PAX Prime in Seattle (booth #412) this new multiplayer experience throws team tactics out the window as each player battles for survival and kills versus all other players. A first for the Gears of War series, the Free-For-All mode pits COG soldier on COG soldier in test of wits and will.

To debut the new mode with a bang, Epic Games and Microsoft are showing off two new maps as well – Gondola and Library.

GONDOLA – The Coastal Villa Apartments are part of the exclusive Halvo community located in the prestigious Agora foothills.  Residents enjoy a host of interior upgrades, and each unit features an ocean view from a private patio or balcony.  This quiet, gated community is located only a short gondola ride from the renowned shops and businesses of our active and thriving coastal community.

LIBRARY – The Alexiy Desipich Memorial Library is not a library in the traditional sense, but rather an archive of important documents surrounding his life, career, and personal interests.  An avid historian, politician, and philosopher, Desipich is most remembered as the father and creator of the Austere Canon, the basis for the Coalition of Ordered Governments, which was shaped around eight guiding principles: Order, Diligence, Purity, Labor, Honor, Loyalty, Faith, and Humility.

Free-For-All is the second new multiplayer experience introduced for “Gears of War: Judgment.” It joins OverRun, the thrilling class-based competitive mode that pits Locust and COG soldiers in a head-to-head battle, to give “Gears” fans an addictive gameplay experience.

A Rather poetic review of the next installment of the Gears Of War series from G4TV.com

Gears of War: Judgment Hands-on PAX 2012 Preview -- A Kill All Free-for-All

I played Gears of War: Judgment’s Free-For-All mode at PAX 2012, and I'm pretty amped. So please excuse the excesses of the ranty Gears of War: Judgmentpreview that follows. You know how when you go see a truly great rock band play--I mean like a great band, like the Ramones in 1983, or Nirvana in 1991--and the group gets to that high point in their set, that moment where all the instruments are blazing and perfectly in time, the crowd is jumping, and the sound is truly transcendent?

And it doesn't matter if you're in a crappy club with 14 other people or you're in the Coliseum with 40,000. Everyone is transported. The crowd and the musicians are together in another realm, beyond conscious thought, all grooving in that place of pure expressive ecstasy and bliss that all music aspires toward?

You know that? That's what the best shooters can be like.

When you're playing with the right people, at the right time, in the right state of mind, the entire world falls away, and your id is totally satiated with twitch-action muscle movement and boundless carnage. Shooters are rock 'n roll. Shooters are a drug, but one that doesn't make your teeth fall out.

There are so many imitators, but no one else has ever captured the Gears sweet-spot. The movement is just clompy enough to suggest real weight to your character, but never so clompy it frustrates. The guns do enough damage to make players feel they're dealing death, but never so much damage that you die after a single shot (except when you deserve it, of course).

The Gears of War shotgun is like a work-of-art by itself...and dat Lancer, that chainsaw-fronted rifle of death...damn, man. Epic showed off a new mode for the franchise, Free-For-All, an every-man-for-himself experience new to the Gears line of games. The concept of the mode is a classic: Put 10 gamers together on a closed map with a ton of weapons and explosives and let 'em tear the hell out of each other. There's nothing at all innovative about it, but it has that feel.

This is not a game mode for fans of meticulous strategy. It's just a riot of guns and explosives--shoot first, shoot second--so you need to leave your rationality in the lobby, and give in to the chaos to get the most out of the Free-For-All mode.

According to developer Epic, the idea of this mode is to create something a little faster, a little more punk rock, in response to feedback from gamers. The pace is definitely faster than previous Gears titles and competitive multiplayer modes, but it's never too fast or too floaty like a speed-based shooter. This is still a weight-based shooter. That grounded-in-gravity heaviness that has marked the Gears of War franchise since the first game is baked in.

The weapons are just the kinds of weapons you'd expect, including a new gun called the Breech Shot, a mid-range weapon, designed for headshots. These are Standard issue firearms, but each one is balanced and tuned perfectly. Each weapon feels and sounds so distinctive, you'd know how the tool is employed without even seeing the screen.

There were two new maps shown at PAX as well. The Library is set in a library, and The Gondola features, you guessed it, a moving gondola. Each is a well-designed multiplayer map, exactly how you'd expect a multiplayer map to be, but again, while the designs are nothing innovative, each just feels right. Huge scale violence in a ancient library is incongruous, but once you stop worrying about blowing up all the nice old books, you can identify hiding spots and vantages to take out others.

The Gondola level's innovation is a moving platform holding grenades on a vertical (well, diagonal, actually) playing field. It's perfect for the weird, gung-ho, suicidal tactics and reckless disregard for personal safety of that a game mode like free-for-all encourages.

Free For All Information We Know So Far

Players

Ten players confirmed.
Character skins are not confirmed but multiple videos show Gears 3 characters and Judgment characters. Gears 3 characters are possibly placeholders.

Grenades

Frag grenades now can stick opponents to "reward players who have good accuracy."
You spawn with a medium-damage Frag in FFA.
Grenade wall plants are disabled.
Tagging can still be done to players by holding LB and pressing B.
Grenades can be aimed by holding LB.
Ink grenade no longer stun.
Ink grenades have larger AoE (Area of Effect) and DPS (Damage/second). Can be used as deterrents for halls, weapon pickups, doorways. Cannot be rolled or run through without doing DBNO (Down But Not Out).

Grenades glow to more accurately outline them
Frag grenade damage has been lowered.

Loadouts & Weapon Swaps

When spawning, you can choose between Lancer and Hammerburst for a primary, Snub for secondary.
In order to pick up a different secondary, you must switch to your Snub pistol and change out that weapon. Otherwise you will change out your Primary weapon.
Weapon pickups have a faster animation than previous Gears installments.

Breechshot

Power Weapon.
One shot headshot, but if you aim for the body, it takes 3 shots to kill.

Rifles

All rifles (Lancer, Hammerburst, Retro lancer) have the same damage settings as Gears 3.
Retro Lancer is confirmed to be returning. Retro Charge is confirmed to return. Retro is a pickup weapon in FFA.
Failed Retro charge appears to do less damage than Gears 3.

Shotguns

Sawed-off is confirmed to be returning. Damage setting is unknown. Pickup Weapon in FFA.
Gnasher is returning. Damage setting unknown. Pickup weapon in FFA.

Customization

Weapon skins are returning. Flaming Lancer, Immulsion Hammerburst spotted in PAX videos.

Hip fire cross-hairs fade, but still turn red when on an enemy.
Hard aim cross-hairs turn to full brightness.

Height Drops

You can roll or run off high ledges, up to "Two Stories" according to developers.
Slight fall damage when taking this course of action.
You can chainsaw/shoot enemies while falling.

Chainsaw

Smoke is emitted when the chainsaw is revved.
Time between revving and being immune to stun has been increased from Gears 3 levels.

Health Regenerator

Pickup/Active effect.
Gives the player bursts of health to give a battle advantage.
Cannot survive one shot kills (Chainsaw, Retro charge, headshot, Gnasher gib, etc.)

Maps

Maps are designed for individual modes.
Gondola and Library are the two maps showcased.
Maps for FFA are more height based.

Spawns

Spawn time is reduced.
Spawn protection time is reduced.

Mechanics

Stopping power is removed.
Retro and DBS will be altered.
Mantle kick is under review for consistency.
No active reload bonus.

Not keen on the crosshairs being permanent, seems a bit too noob friendly for my liking, maps designed for specific modes is a good idea, small maps for FFA, bigger maps for team based gametypes.  Still not sure about the new control system having used the same system (bar the odd change) for 6 years, no doubt it's pretty easy to get used to though.  No stopping power is a big plus, just like Gears 1.   :)

A story in the new issue of OXM mentions a new game mode called Overcome, here's the blurb:

OVERCOME: You'll be able to set up one-round, one-team survival mode as COGs against endless waves of A.I.-controlled Horde called "Co-op Survival." You can't win; the point instead is to last as long as possible.

Nothing else was mentioned and Epic haven't confirmed the mode, maybe the trailer at tonight's game awards on Spike might shed some light but it'll most likely be a campaign based trailer.

My girlfriend and I had the same discussion after seeing the new Judge Dredd trailer.  The word "Judgment" splashed across the screen and we both looked at eachother confused.

DBNO removed from all MP gametypes, no more curb stomps people!   >:(

Hearing that you can't even be locust in MP anymore either, Red vs Blue COG teams instead, shocking if true!

The removal of down-but-not-out will definitely change the way some people play the game, which may or may not be a good thing.

If the Red vs Blue thing is true, they're going to have to lose the grit filter and really amp up the brightness of those colors.  It's hard to tell which team you're on when everything looks grey & brown.

Some bits of info from the recent Epic Podcast:

Confirming that no DBNO means no more Execution, no more Guardian, no more Wingman... This decision was heavily debated within the company, apparently.

DBNO is a barrier to entry for the average player, says Jim. DBNO creates many factors that get in the way of a fluid and faster game experience.

He also said that the argument that DBNO promotes teamwork can easily be turned around, it also discourages teamwork with things like kill stealing and so on. Removing DBNO will allow players to act more like a team.

On the topic of the Locust being removed from MP, he says Epic are aware the fans like to play as the Locust, hence Beast mode, BUT he also says that in MP, the COG are more approachable as characters that players can identify with, hence Blue COG vs Red COG.

Hitbox issues were also cited as a reason to remove the Locust (but it's okay to keep female characters?).

The Locust aren't coming back for MP (outside OverRun) and that's not going to change for release. Having MP be Blue COG vs Red COG makes it a more "streamlined" experience (what?).

As for loadout changes (spawn with one main weapon, pistol and grenade of choice), Jim says that spawning with grenades is a huge gamechanger in Judgment MP and that it conditioned the loadout system (balancing?). Says it's good for variety, teamwork, etc. The maps in Judgment play very differently (more vertical, maze-like).

Judgment MP changes in a nutshell: Epic don't want players to spend so much time watching/waiting, but to spend more time playing. Map design has to be approachable, easy to understand and navigate, etc.

Some weapons (such as the Sawed-Off) were completely redesigned based on the feedback received from the Judgment beta playtesters.

So no more Guardian, Wingman, Execution, Capture the Leader is likely to be taken out, Warzone is also rumoured to be out (which is madness if true!), no more Locust in MP has now been confirmed, the MP isn't looking too good at the moment!

New info from the recent podcast:

MP modes shipping with Judgment: Overrun, FFA, Domination, and TDM.
There are NO elimination, non-respawn modes.
TDM now counts kills towards a goal; there is no more respawn pool
Overrun has bots, can be played in private.
Overrun has no unannounced classes on either side.
You cannot choose characters for Overrun, only classes (ex: you can't be a Cole engineer).
Ranked and quick are still separate, sound unchanged.
You can tag people with any type of grenade; its effect is unchanged (ex: beacon grenade tagged on opponent still just spots)
You can destroy and jump through windows.
Mantle kick is unchanged.
Ammo boxes replenish grenades.
(Supposedly) Every starting weapon has a very specific role, is ineffective out of that role, and has a weakness.

Any word on if they're shifting the story's focus back to Marcus Fenix?

Every ad I've seen of the game over the past month has had that adorable Marcus puss all over it.  I'm guessing it's just marketing to appeal to what people are familiar with, but I'm partially offended on Baird's behalf.

No Limited Edition for Gears Judgment

Raczilla's post (Epic Forums)

Hey guys,

I know this is a popular topic right now and want to share with you that we’re not creating a formal Limited Edition of Judgment. It's true that there are retail partners around the globe who are creating their own unique offerings. That's why you're seeing things like this Special Edition in Australia. https://ebgames.com.au/xbox360-15429...ition-Xbox-360

Since retailers are doing this on their own, there's no a master list or schedule I can share with everyone. The best bet is to ask with your local retailer as they will have the most up to date information.

I know some of you will be bummed about the news of no LE, but we do want to share this with you so you can make the best decision about where and how you might like to order Judgment.

Feel free to continue to use this thread to discuss this topic.

Thanks!

New Gears of War Deal Reminds Us That The Price of Games No Longer Makes Sense

The first wave of "launch" copies of March 19th's $60 Gears of War: Judgment will come bundled with a bonus $19.99 "value", according to a Microsoft press release e-mailed this morning.

That "value"?

A download code for the original Gears of War, which the company says "more than half" of the players of the last Gears game—Gears of War 3—didn't play. That late-2006 game launched for $60 and goes for $19.99 if you want to download it to your Xbox 360 now.

It's nice to get a free game when buying another game, right? Even if there's a strong chance that nearly half the people buying this new game probably already played it. After all, that's as valid a way to interpret Microsoft's research stat as Microsoft's way, no?

So what's a game that maybe nearly half of the Gears faithful already played really worth? Twenty bucks? Zero bucks (complete with an order for the $60 Judgment)?

It's notable that Microsoft is even trying to sell the original five year old Gears for $20 these days. Who thinks that's a good price for a game that has enjoyed two iterative sequels and is about to get a third? On Steam, on PSN, games that old often go for far less. And over at GameStop, you can buy the original Gears of War, on a disc, for a scant.... $2.99. What a bargain!

Gears of War: Judgment season pass announced, will cost 1600 MS Points
Grants owners a permanent double XP boost, among other DLC.

Gears of War: Judgment will unsurprisingly be accompanied by an optional season pass that will cost 1600 MS Points and save players 20 per cent overall on the game's DLC.

This makes it a third cheaper than the Gears of War 3 Season Pass, but it also saves players 13 per cent less.

As detailed on Epic Games' official site (http://epicgames.com/community/2013/02/judgment-vip-season-pass-big-savings-exclusive-content/), the Judgment "VIP Season Pass" will grant its bearers an exclusive permanent double XP boost, earlier access to multiplayer maps, and two add-on DLCs that contain six multiplayer maps, two new modes, five exclusive weapon skins and four unique armor skins.

Gears of War: Judgment will launch exclusively on Xbox 360 on 22nd March in Europe and 19th March in North America.

Must say, I like the approach Bissell seems to have taken with what's going to be presented. I'm still on the fence(with regards to a "Day One" purchase), mostly because I'd given Gears 3 the last word on the franchise.

But that video definitely did push it up on the list of interest.

I'd like to hold off on purchasing Judgment for a little while, but I predict I'll be pressured to buy sooner than later out of respect for the tradition Slam & I have for the franchise.

Maybe his new child-spawn will keep Slam preoccupied until I can find a cheap copy of Judgment.   8)

Fan controlled 'Epic Reaper' Revealed for Gears of War: Judgment

Epic Games has revealed details of an inventive new character coming to Gears of War: Judgment multiplayer.

Called the “Epic Reaper,” the character is a gruesome looking fella with special abilities and physics making him extremely difficult to kill.

The twist comes with the fact that each week just one player will be chosen to control the Reaper, based on their contributions to the Gears of War community.

In addition to this the chosen player will also receive a set of custom Gears of War: Judgment dog tags.

Meanwhile, those players that are able to bring down this formidable enemy will be rewarded with the Reaper medal and custom weapon skin.

Epic employees will also have the Reaper skin available, so if you kill them, it will count towards the medal and skin.

You can nominate someone to be the Reaper now, by either posting on the official Epic forums or using the Twitter hastag #GearsReaper.

You can see an image of the Epic Reaper below. Gears of War: Judgment is out on March 19th in North America and March 22nd in Europe.

I watched the IGN live stream yesterday which featured the Reapers, they are very quick and seem to have extremely overpowered weapons, they were getting killed quite easily though so if we ever come across one it shouldn't be too difficult to kill one.

Gears of War: Judgment will let players “buy” double XP as microtransactions

In a rather unsettling piece of news, Gears of War: Judgment will allow players to “buy” double XP boosts via microtransactions for the game’s multiplayer.

Epic Games is selling of these XP boosts in packs; starting with 80 Microsoft Points for a 10-match pack, 320 MS Points for a 50-match pack, 560 MS Points for 560 100 matches and a 200-match pack for 800 MS Points.

Players who to “save” on this “feature” can opt to buy the game’s VIP Season Pass for a “permanent” double XP boost.

Let’s hope this isn’t a precedent for multiplayer in games. While getting  double XP for every match won’t necessarily mean you’ll be a better player, it will, however, give you earlier access to more equipment, guns and other unlockable stuff.

Are you fine with this “feature” to crop up in other games? Maybe for those who are time-strapped,  but is this a start of “paying to win” even for non-F2P games?

Pro-Tip: In Overrun, if you're a medic and a rager is charging at you, let him kill you, but just after you've thrown a stimgas grenade.  You'll resurrect yourself, and have plenty of time to shoot him as he's moving on from what he thought was a kill.

Nice one, Pro Tips always welcome  ;)

Played the Demo a lot over the last few days and really enjoyed it!

Looking forward to the games release today!!!!!!

I know the Campaign is short but the game boasts really good replay value.

Can someone tell me why the hell Team Deathmatch and Domination is COG versus COG. What genius at Epic Games came up with that stupid variation, it has to be COG versus Locust, that's the whole point of the f***ing game!!!

I've been saying the same since we found out the Locust had been dropped a few months ago, shocking decision!

Gears of War: Judgment will let players “buy” double XP as microtransactions

I really don't like the idea of this. Thankfully Gears MP is only a rank and cosmetic but if this catches on with all MP games it's spoiling the art of MP as a sport. I suppose money talks and can buy you everything. :(

I just cannot understand the logic. It was so easy to know which team you were on, now I haven't got a clue. The whole premise of the game is humans vs locust, why would COGs be shooting at COGs anyway? Somebody at Epic needs sacking for this shocking decision.

Can't see myself player a lot of multiplayer now other than Overrun, and even then it needs to be with people who communicate, playing with randoms this morning was shocking! Good job we still have Gears 1, 2 and 3 :)

Edit: AND, I've finished the single player campaign on hardcore in about 4 hours, where's the fun in that? And who decided to switch the gun selection method, or how to plant a grenade, or how to use tac-com, if it ain't broke don't fix it! Don't think I'll be buying anymore Gears Of War games if this is the way they're taking the series.

I don't mind the control change too much though I have pressed the d-pad to change weapons a few times, old habits and all that!

One reviewer said that the campaign was around 8 hours long, not sure if that included all the declassified missions and the Aftermath mission though, if true then i'm not too fussed about that as it's still twice as long as all the COD games and around the same as Gears 2 & 3.   :)

My main problem is the lack of maps, 4 for Overrun/Survival and 4 for TDM/FFA/Domination, that's pretty damn bad, we've got 2 more coming in April with Exection but that still only 5 maps for the modes mentioned above, 6 future maps too (with 2 new modes) but no doubt they'll be split evenly to cover the modes so we'll basically only have 8 maps to kill eachother on, Gears 2 had 29!  Hopefully we'll get another free map pack just to boost the numbers a bit and hopefully Horde returns.   :)

The whole COG v COG issue. I can’t understand why they didn’t restrict such a thing to ‘Free for All’. This would make way more sense to people and leave the COG v Locust to the Team Death Match!! This would give you the option to play both game types and keep in line with previous GOW games. ???

I also find it really difficult to distinguish between the different COG Avatars in Team Death match. It’s really only the color on their backs that you can make out are they on the RED or BLUE team. There is only a faint coloring of either RED or BLUE looking at an Avatar from the front, at least that’s what I find. Maybe it’s just a case of having to get use to it. It’s just the COG V Locust methodology made things a lot less complicated in this respect.  #)

Just about started playing the GOW Judgment Campaign. Very enjoyable! But unfortunately I’m not able to spend as much time at it as I’d like. Really like the declassified addition of the game. It doesn’t really add anymore game time to the game but makes it just that little bit more, was going to say difficult but that’s definitely not the right word, more like interesting! The flash back missions are really cool also. From a particular persons point of view, if they recall you only had pistols at that time, then you only have pistols etc.

Multiplayer: (Aside from my grievances regarding the COG v COG TDM)

Really like OverRun. Find myself playing this out of most of the Multiplayer options.

The Multiplayer maps of which there are few, Island, Skyline, Junkyard and Estate, but what they did they did well. They are frantic to say the least but I really like the additions they made to previous games in the series i.e. the Helicopter and Cable Car where you can get on and get off, class….

Also the Multi Storied Maps gives the whole thing a nice 3 dimensional feel to the whole thing and makes the experience feel more open World.

The smart spawn system was a nice touch also. The option to re-spawn quickly and drop the Spawn protection is welcomed, coming from someone who gets blasted to bits on regular occasion and spends most of my time in multiplayer waiting to respawn.

The option to restrict but allow you to choose from a list which main weapon you start with, I thought was touch also. Also like the weapon change tweak. Similar to the Call of Duty games, you can throw and grenade/change weapons whilst running. Speeds things up nicely!

The Sticky grenade is pretty cool also. In fact as I’m writing this I find myself laughing at the memory of seeing an Avatar running around with a Frag stuck to its head waiting for the inevitable explosion.

While I’m on the topic of Frag grenades, tried for ages to plant a Frag grenade to no avail. Just read there that to do this you must perform the following: Hold LB and then use B. This won’t end well for me. I’ll get to a place where I want to plant it and say to myself, ‘OK so it’s LB then B’ and then get blown to pieces while my Avatar is just standing there waiting for me to input the instruction. Haven’t tried this yet so can’t confirm?  ;)

ANYWAY……..just echoing what has been said on here already!

Likes (that I’ve come across so far):
Game Campaign
Multiplayer maps and the additions included within (Not enough Maps though!!!)
OverRun

Dislikes:
COG v COG TDM (Should have kept this contained to Free For All)
Missing Horde mode
Need more Maps ASAP!!

I really don't like the change to the way the grenade works, I've blown myself up numerous times in the campaign when I'm trying to access the tac-com and forget it's not the LB anymore, in fact I really don't like any of the changes, only having two guns, lack of maps, no Horde, sticky grenades, forced characters in multiplayer (If I wanna be an engineer I have to be Baird, but I don't like Baird), lack of weapon variation in multiplayer, COG Vs COG in multiplayer

Basically, I HATE the multiplayer. to me this isn't Gears, it's Gears trying to be COD, and I HATE COD

Still, the campaign was good, albeit way too short. I, of limited gaming prowess, should not be able to complete the whole campaign on Hardcore in 4 hours.

Epic Fail Epic  >:(

Really? wow. I know I was really disappointed at the demo. I played it at PAX East over the weekend and Just ugh. It was so glitchy, like ugh. I regret wasting my 1hr of time waiting in line to play it :| Shouldve left the line and jumped in line for The Last of Us demo. For once that line was super short, wait time was like 20 mins :|

Well, I played it online last night with friends for the first time and it was much better. When you're communicating with each other (and you play it in a Private session set to Normal rather than Hardcore) Survival is quite fun, and despite the massive annoyance of there being no locust, team deathmatch and domination were both quite playable :)

Gears 3 was dead online really quick too and that sold far more than Judgment so it's no real surprise.

“Gears of War: Judgment” Call to Arms Map Pack Introduces Three Maps and an Intense New Multiplayer Mode starting April 23

The second “Judgment” Map Pack explores the darker side of the “Gears” universe, with three bone-chilling maps, the new “Master at Arms” multiplayer mode and exclusive digital rewards

Microsoft and Epic Studios today announced the second expansion in the “Gears of War: Judgment” multiplayer experience, the Call to Arms Map Pack, coming to VIP Season Pass holders on Tuesday, April 23 via Xbox LIVE, and available worldwide April 30. Developed by Epic Games and People Can Fly, the Call to Arms Map Pack brings players three new multiplayer maps, a brand-new mode called “Master at Arms,” and six armor and gun skins for customizing your characters and weapons.

Set against the backdrop of the Locust invasion of Halvo Bay, all three new maps provide a mix of close quarters and vertical combat, keeping Gearheads immersed in the action. The Call to Arms Map Pack provides 10 new Achievements worth a total of 250 Gamerscore.
For more information on the Call to Arms Map Pack, please visit the “Gears of War” community site epicgames.com/community. Full descriptions of the new maps and mode are below:

New Maps:

Terminal: The speed and ferocity of the Locust invasion took Halvo Bay completely by surprise. Residents scrambled to evacuate by every means possible, and COG forces were called in to maintain order as martial law was enforced. However, the Locust showed no mercy, and gave no quarter; they swept through train terminals like this one to take advantage of the close quarters and sheer number of defenseless humans trapped within its walls. Sometimes, COG forces could hold the line long enough for a final evacuation, but too many lost their lives in defense of the people and the land they loved.

Blood Drive: As casualties started to mount, the staff at Halvo Memorial quickly began what would become the largest triage effort in the history of Sera. Their “Give Blood Today” campaign inspired a global blood drive in support of COG forces and wounded civilians. Sadly, Halvo fell quickly, and the hospital became a battlefront instead of a sanctuary. The seed of hope was planted, however, and government-run Memorial hospitals across the country mobilized to keep the effort alive until Jacinto Memorial was the last standing bastion of hope for the people of Sera.

Boneyard: The concept of traditional memorial services had to be suspended due to the constant stream and alarming volume of casualties as Sera fell victim to the Locust Horde. Memorial grounds quickly became boneyards. Unmarked holes became grave sites and mausoleums were filled with the nameless remains of the fallen, their skeletons piled into heaps. Tread lightly, you never know what, or who, you’re walking on, and one day you’re bound to join them.

The Call to Arms Map Pack will be available on Xbox LIVE for 1000 Microsoft Points. Players who purchase the “Gears of War: Judgment” VIP Season Pass will receive early access to map packs and a 25 percent savings versus purchasing them individually.

New Mode: “Master At Arms”

This new free-for-all game mode exclusive to “Gears of War: Judgment” will test the true range of your soldiering skills. The goal is to get a kill with each of the 20 different available weapons, without resorting to melee or grenade tactics. Every successful kill will automatically advance you to the next available weapon until you have used them all and proven your skill as a true Master at Arms.

Massive Update for Judgment, about damn time too!!!

Massive updates that should go live soon, possibly as early as of 9AM EST tomorrow. Some of the changes were in response to your feedback over the last couple weeks here on the forums, on twitter, facebook, etc.:

- Dual weapon loadout will be propegated to all playlists with the exception of FFA.
- Stim grenades will be removed from all playlists with the exception of FFA.
- Torquebow charge time reduced back to Gears 3 Active levels (from 2 seconds down to 1.5 seconds).
- Prize boxes updated in the next TU to deliver all content before doling out XP (instead of assigning randomly).

We also went through the community feedback list and looked at everything we could. Here's a rehash of our response from tonight's live stream event:

I. Maps / Content

A. Only 4 traditional multiplayer maps
Map counts increased significantly with current and future DLC. Everyone has had great feedback on what they'd like to see in the future, and we're still working on getting you guys new content. Not sure that we'd be able to pull over a massive content dump from Gears 3, but we’re definitely working on incremental changes that will get you guys what you want. More DLC is coming, stay tuned!

B. Maps are not symmetrical
DLC maps are either symmetrical or much more symmetrical than release maps. Think layouts that are “more Haven, less Gondola”.

C. Maps are too big
Future DLC map designs are smaller and/or flow better so that combat is less segregated. We’re also setting up hard swaps that focus the action along the midline for Execution.

D. Updates are only “Server side”
We have made an effort to get changes up and tested as early as possible so that we can include them in the required title updates. This will ensure that a good number of the changes are actually present in a LAN setting. We’re also posting change notes and trying to be proactive with communication before changes are implemented.

E. No Locusts in standard versus multiplayer
This cannot be changed at this point. We can, however, make some changes to improve sound and visual recognition between teams. More on that to follow.

II. Melee

A. Reverse 2 Piece possible
We’ve adjusted melee pretty significantly to address these issues. If melee is in the game, you will always be able to shoot someone, and then finish them with a hit. We’ve adjusted delays a bit to help prevent this tactic from being abused, and adjusting it too much further will create the unnatural delays and obstructions to gameplay that we have previously removed in response to your feedback on this very topic.

B. Speed
See above.

C. Range
We have not seen a range difference, and the code has not changed in that regard. There is a chance that latency is affecting this in some circumstances, and it will require more investigation.

III. Matchmaking / Ranked (Incentive)

A. Too many playlists
We’re still working on solutions to this problem, but it is a highly complicated beast (of our own making, to be sure).

B. Ranked vs. Quick match Experience earned
Ranked XP will be increased. We’re working on some other incentives to draw people into Ranked as well (more “competitive-style settings”, for example).

C. Little incentive to play ranked
Judgment does indeed use skill-based ranking as part of its matchmaking algorithm. In point of fact, it essentially IS the Halo matchmaking system as that was the standard put forth by Microsoft. The main difference is that we do it under the hood. This does mean that we don’t have a ranked league-style system, and adding that at this point would unfortunately be out of scope for Judgment. We’re working on other Ranked incentives, however, that don’t require a full redesign of our matchmaking, UI, and infrastructure.

IV. Weapon Balancing (Spawn / Power)

A. Gnasher
We’re working on a fix to allow players the option to toggle their on-screen reticule. The close range “inconsistency” people report is actually an intentional fix that favors the player to ensure they get a proper kill when the barrel of the gun is touching another player’s cylinder. An ammo count change is highly contentious in public forums, and we feel pretty strongly that the current ammo levels actually favor Judgment’s weapon balance. The best option at this point is to increase ammo to 16 and try it in the Test Server.

B. Lancer
A change to the Lancer may indeed favor competitive players who intend on using it in a support capacity. However, the larger majority of the community does not appear to agree that it needs updating. It is currently performing in its intended role across all gametypes, and changing it could create a cascading effect that requires a rebalance of all starting weapons.

Changing to a two-weapon loadout is unlikely to create a huge imbalance in the weapons. The reality of the game stats is that within a few seconds of spawning, you’re either dead, or you have a secondary weapon anyway, so pulling that back to spawn doesn’t significantly move the needle in terms of game balance.

That said, the best option is to make your suggested changes in the Test Server, along with the Gnasher changes, and see how it plays out. We’ll do that ASAP. We’ll start with the clip size reduction and make further updates if necessary.

C. Booshka
Agreed. Clip size and starting ammo being reduced.

D. Boomshot
Agreed. Starting ammo being reduced.

V. Grenade Balancing

A. Ink Grenade
Internal QA is looking into the reported issues. More info to follow.

B. Stim Grenade
Stim grenade being removed from loadout and moved to a pickup in some playlists.

C. Ammo boxes
We’ll try pulling grenades out of ammo boxes in the Test Server, and propagate globally if there is a good response.

VI. Audio (In-Game)

A. Sound isn’t accurately location based
We can’t realistically change our sound engine at this point, but we can (and will) significantly reduce your (and your team’s) footstep volume. If you hear someone, that’ll pretty much guarantee that they are an enemy. We could also reduce the radius of the footstep sound a bit to make it less apparent when they’re above/below you, but that would require a Title Update to implement, and another to change back if the change isn’t well received. Probably too risky at this point.

VII. Glitches

A. Movement
Not getting into cover is due to a series of complicated factors that are made more apparent by Judgment’s increase in game speed and player density. We’ll look into it, but it may not be fixable.

B. Characters
Kim’s hitbox already fixed in the upcoming TU.

Boomshield already adjusted on female characters in the upcoming TU.

I’m not 100% clear on the characters failing to show visual recognition on successive shots, but if I had to guess, I’d say that is by design to prevent them from spamming the same animation over and over while taking damage. As long as the other visual feedback is registering (blood, etc.) then I don’t see this as a major problem. Will need to investigate further.

C. In Game
If players can join a private game, then that is a bug – unless it is from a player following someone in the game who is NOT set to private (that’s a Microsoft rule). QA is investigating.

VIII. Final Suggestions

A. Domination Gametype
Changed time to break hills from 2 seconds to 1 second.

B. Upgrade spectator mode (mega wish)
Extremely out of scope for Judgment, but excellent feedback for the future.

C. Theater mode (mega wish)
Extremely out of scope for Judgment, but excellent feedback for the future.

___

Lastly, this weekend's event will be Torquebow Tag (back by popular demand!). With all the changes going through the game, we figured it would be best to let things stabilize and give everyone a chance to test thigns out and get a feel for everything. So TB Tag will stay up throughout the week, and we'll look at the return of the Test Server next week.

All of this stuff is minor compared to the two major flaws of Judgment:

There's no mention about putting DBNO back in :( And it's still stupid COG vs COG... of course they can change that, they just don't want to!

Back to Gears 2 and 3 for me

Questions and answers from this week's Epic podcast.

MAJOR QUESTIONS:

When is Capitol being released?
In fact Capitol has undergone a name change, in which more information will be released for the upcoming overrun map TOMORROW.

When is the next DLC being released?
Next week we will have more information on the upcoming DLC by EPIC.

What is the new Gametype for the upcoming DLC?
It will be a single objective based gametype, more information next week.

When is the Title Update being released?
More information will be released on the TU when EPIC release more information on the Upcoming DLC (So next week). Also will be released with the new DLC.

Are there going to be more Characters in future DLC?
At this point according to Raczilla, there are no future plans for any DLC characters.

MINOR QUESTIONS:

Why are DLC achievements locked only to online Multiplayer?
According to Jim, this will all be fixed in the next TU. You will be able to gain achievements within Private.

Can we get Gears of War 3 TDM back? (Clutch Factor)
At this point it is impossible.

Can centre screen firing be removed?
No.

Can the Scorcher ammo be reduced?
Under discussion, at this current time the Scorcher can easily kill 5 players with one clip. So they are going to have a look at what they can do with that.

Can we try the old control layout in the test server?
Unfortunately at this point it is impossible, so no.

Maxim Overrun map "Dreadnought" downloadable May 15th

On May 15th, you’ll be able to download the second MAXIM Map, Dreadnought, available for OverRun players free of charge for a limited time.

In the months immediately following Emergence Day, the COG managed to capture some Locust Berserkers. Thinking that a ship at sea would be safe from an underground enemy, the COG decided to transport their prize to a secure research facility via the CNV Pomeroy. Little did they know that the Locust had waterborne beasts from the underground rivers of the Hollow, or that the Locust soldiers would use them so relentlessly to rescue the captured Berserkers. The Pomeroy was corralled into a narrow channel and forced ashore, where the Locust sent a mass of troops to assault and overwhelm the beached vessel.

Lost Relics DLC coming in June

The Gears of War: Judgment DLC “Lost Relics” is coming in June! The pack will include four new maps, a new single objective gametype, new armor and new weapon skins.

New gametype
BREAKTHROUGH – Breakthrough is a single-objective gametype that features two teams with very distinct roles: one team has possession of a flag that they must deliver to a set location; the opposing team has a purely defensive role and unlimited resources.
The attacking team must break through the enemy team’s defensive line and deliver the flag before their pool of lives run out.
