Sony Announces "Playstation Now" - Game Streaming Service

Press Release:

Sony Computer Entertainment Announces "Playstation™Now", A New Streaming Game Service That Leverages Cloud-Based Technology; To Be Available In The United States This Summer

TOKYO, Jan. 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that "PlayStation™Now" (PS Now), the company's streaming game service that leverages cloud-based technology, will become officially available in the United States this summer. PS Now will deliver a variety of popular PlayStation®3 (PS3™) game titles*1 first on PlayStation®4 (PS4™) and PS3 systems, followed by the PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita) system.

In addition to PlayStation platforms, most 2014 U.S. models of Sony's BRAVIA® TV*2 lineup will support PS Now. Eventually the service will expand beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices, allowing users to stream PlayStation games on numerous other Internet-connected devices.

SCE's vision for PS Now is to enable users to instantly enjoy a wide range of full games on the Internet-connected consumer electronics devices they use every day. The accessibility of PS Now means, for example, that PS4 users in the living room can continue playing a game on a PS3 system in their bedroom. Or PS Vita users can enjoy instant access to a game wherever there's Wi-Fi connectivity, such as outdoors, then can switch to a supporting BRAVIA® TV's big screen and play the same game after arriving home.

PS Now will offer choice to gamers with how they want to access content. Gamers can rent by title for specific games they are interested in, or they can choose a subscription that delivers additional value with the ability to explore and play many games available across a wide variety of genres. In addition, the service will support many popular PSNSM features such as online multi-player, Trophies, and messages.

"We are thrilled to deliver entertainment experiences only possible from PlayStation through our new streaming game service," said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "PS Now will allow users to engage in the world of PlayStation, whether they're existing fans or have never owned a PlayStation platform."

During the 2014 International CES held in Las Vegas from January 7, attendees can visit the Sony booth to have a hands-on experience with the PS Now service for the first time ever. Attendees can enjoy four blockbuster PS3 titles, BEYOND: Two Souls, God of War: Ascension, The Last of Us and Puppeteer from SCE Worldwide Studios, on PS Vita or BRAVIA® TV.

Prior to the official launch, SCE will begin a beta program on PS3 systems in certain regions of the United States from the end of January. Additional information about PS Now will be available at [http://us.playstation.com/playstationnow].

SCE will continue to create and expand a new world of entertainment only available on PlayStation through the introduction of innovative technologies and services that deliver amazing experiences.

*1 Details of supported titles will be announced when ready.
*2 Among the 9 U.S. models launching in 2014, 1 model (KDL-R400B) will not support this service.

Sony announces Project Morpheus virtual reality headset for PlayStation 4
First official image released, prototype specs announced.

Sony has announced Project Morpheus, its virtual reality headset for PlayStation 4. It's a prototype for now, but Sony intends to develop it further for a commercial launch.

Morpheus is a visor style head-mounted display that works with the PlayStation Camera to deliver a virtual reality experience. Inertial sensors are built into the head mount unit and the Camera, which the headset requires to work, tracks head orientation and movement so as the player's head rotates the image of the virtual world rotates in real-time.

It also works with the PS Move motion controller. Morpheus reproduces the player's hands and sword, for example, within the game so the player feels like they are physically fighting enemies.

3D audio comes from the front, behind, left and right, recreating stereoscopic sounds heard from below and above.

At the Game Developers Conference this week Sony is showing off the tech with a demo of CCP's space dogfighting game Eve Valkyrie, which is also in development for rival VR headset Oculus Rift, Eidos Montreal's Thief and a couple of its own tech demos: The Castle, which uses the Move controller, and The Deep, which lets you observe waters from inside a shark proof cage.

Below are the current specifications of the prototype. Sony stressed they are subject to change:

    Component: Processor unit, head-mounted unit
    Display Method: LCD
    Panel Size: 5 inches
Panel Resolution: 1920×RGB×1080 (960×RGB×1080 per eye)
    Field of View: 90 degrees
    Sensors: Accelerometer, Gyroscope
    Connection interface: HDMI + USB
    Function: 3D audio, Social Screen

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said: "At SCE we view innovation as an opportunity to build on our mission to push the boundaries of play.

"Project Morpheus is the latest example of innovation from SCE, and we're looking forward to its continued development and the games that will be created as development kits get into the hands of content creators."

I know the rendering of the Project Morpheus hardware is strictly a prototype, but that's one smexy looking piece of gear.

There's an update heading to PS4 which will include the following:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxsdLYIYsH8" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxsdLYIYsH8</a>

The SHAREfactory app offers easy video-editing tools and effects to let you share your greatest moments, your way. Effortlessly combine, personalize, and share your favorite game footage with commentary, music, themes, and more. Once you've created your perfect cut, post it directly to your Facebook profile or save to a USB drive and upload your video to the world.

Additionally, integrated into the latest update is also the following:

"Update 1.70 will add the ability to pre-download pre-ordered games "up to several days prior to release." Following the update, users who enable the auto-download feature will automatically pre-download software to their systems. Also, look for the PS4 to support USB Saves and will support HDMI video capture to a separate device by introducing an HDCP off option."

SharePlay Feature Detailed:

Quote
The best way to think about Share Play is like a "virtual couch". PlayStation 4 will create an online local co-op experience by allowing you to invite a friend to join your game—even when they don't own a copy of it. With this first-of-its-kind feature, you'll be able to play games with a friend just as if you were together in the same room. Let's say that with games… you'll be able to invite your friend online to play against the Miami Heat for the championship as the San Antonio Spurs in NBA2K, tackle the challenging Towerfall Ascension Quest Mode together, or aide, heal, and protect you as Igniculus in Child of Light's local co-op mode.

With Share Play, you can even jump into a game to assist a friend. For example, if there is part of a game that you can't quite finish, you can invite a friend to take over your controls. Like handing over the controller to a friend on your couch, your screen will be shared as your friend gets through the part of the game that has been giving you trouble—can't get past that part in The Last of Us: Remastered when you're hanging upside down? Get a little help.

Share Play will be coming to PS4 as part of the upcoming system software update v2.00, scheduled for release this fall. The update will also add highly requested broadcast and video share features, including both uploading you game play footage and dedicated app support for YouTube, which we mentioned on stage at E3. Finally, What's New will get enhanced real-time activity through friend-of-friend suggestions, allowing instant access to friends' and recently played games' broadcasts, and a real name search function will also be added. More features to come when v2.00 is made available this fall, and we will have more to announce in the coming months.

Sony set to announce something next month.... Speculation has it that we may finally get to meet the PS4.5 AKA Neo - which is slated to rival the upcoming MS Scorpio.

The invitation has been sent to media outlets and will apparently take place at 3 p.m. ET on Sept. 7 at the PlayStation Theater, which is located in New York's Times Square. As they say, stay tuned.
