Title: Tomb Raider
Post by: GamerMan316 on July 23, 2009, 08:55:31 PM
Next Tomb Raider will be open-world

Three artworks and a fact sheet. That's the content of the leak that gave us the very first informations on Tomb Raider 9 a few hours ago, revealing to the world what Crystal Dynamics has been up to since they decided - once again - to reboot the legendary franchise. The details are surprising. For example we learn that the new adventures of Lara Croft will be, for the first time, Rated M. Better yet, the game will take place in an open world - a mysterious Japanese island inhabited by strange creatures. A new perspective for the series, a little scary too. But nevertheless exciting as the possibilities are vast. Hit the link to discover the first visuals and details about Lara Croft's next adventure.

The Plot - When a sudden storm destroys her research vessel, a young and inexperienced Lara Croft finds herself stranded on a mysterious and remote island hiden of the shores of Japan. Despite several signs of various inhabitants the island is oddly deserted, and an uneasy feeling settles in as strange sounds emerge from the shadows. With only her determination, inner strenght, and resourcefulness to help her, Lara must overcome the challenges of a harsh and unforgiving journey that will take her across a vast island wilderness and deep into the claustrophobic and menacing underground tombs from the island's past. As she struggles to prevail through brutal combat encounters and treacherous exploration, Lara will be pushed to her limits and forced to adapt to her situation in order to survive and escape from the lethal predators that stalk her every move.

Hunt or be hunted - Evade outsmart, track and kill the mysterious enemies that hunt you as prey.

Survival Action - Brutally attack and defend as you fight to survive through visceral one on one melee combat.

Strategic Weapons - Gain an advantage in combat by finding an array of different melee and ranged weapons including a variety of guns and the hunters ultimate weapon, the bow.

Creative Survival - React and adapt to the island by using only that wich you can salvage from the environment like climbing axes, rope, and machetes that can be used to unlock new traversal and combat gameplay options.

Free Movement - Scrale up a vertical cliff wall, sprint and leap across a huge chasm, steer mid air to land a misderected jump there is no one right way to traverse, survive, and explore the harsh enviroment of the island.

One Cohesive World - The diverse multi region island is an open playground alive with creatures, weather and natural events.

Origin Story - This new Tomb Raider concept reboots the franchise by exploring the origins of Lara Croft's transformation into a hardened adventurer as unravel the story behind the island's mysterious past.

On the original post, Luke mentioned the girl looking like the girl from The Ring, he mentioned Samara from the US version but the US version sucks so i put Sadakao from the classic Japanese version "Ringu".  He also said they look like rejects from Pan's Labyrinth, the one on the right definitely has that kind of look.

Why are they looking at her origins ... i thought that'd been done with the one on the Playstation 1 where she's 'dead' and all the people gathered at her wake tell all her old stories and you play them out.

Lara was presumed dead at the end The Last Revelation, Tomb Raider Chronicles (5th in the series) is set days later and begins with the memorial service.

Yep, it's the one where her friends sit around and reminisce about Lara's past exploits, it wasn't a great game compared to the original & The Last Revelation, but still had it's moments.

Underworld may be next on my list, after I complete COD4 at least once so I can be excited about Modern Warfare 2.

Tomb Raider man leaves Tomb Raider (again)
Toby Gard leaves Crystal Dynamics

An online CV posting has revealed that Toby Gard, the man who created Lara Croft, left the developer and then re-joined it's US developer, has again left the developer. Clear on that?

While no details were revealed about why Gard left the US outfit, which he was originally brought into to help with ongoing Tomb Raider projects, he did give Develop a tiny update.

"Obviously it's confidential what goes on at Crystal Dynamics. But the situation is that I'm no longer working with them, and I've started up my own consultancy business," he said.

End of another era?

In not-so-related news, I just stated playing Underworld this past weekent.  The controls are a little frustrating, not because they're "challenging" ... because they feel broken.  But overall I'm enjoying the game.  Much more than Legend.

Leaked Tomb Raider details suggest reboot - Report
Concept for next Lara Croft adventure emerges

Reports are creeping up all over the net with what are believed to be details for the new Tomb Raider game.

Nothing has been confirmed by Square-Enix yet so this should all be taken as rumour at the moment.

What gives it a bit more reliability than usual, however, is that pictures of a fact sheet and artwork emerged on the web but were quickly taken down again.

Here's what that fact sheet apparently contained:

The Next Tomb Raider Video Game Concept for PS3, Xbox 360 and PCs

When a sudden storm destroys her research vessel, a young and inexperienced Lara Croft finds herself stranded on a mysterious and remote island hidden off the shores of Japan.

Despite several signs of various inhabitants the island is oddly deserted, and an uneasy feeling settles in as strange sounds emerge from the shadows.

With only her determination, inner strength and resourcefulness to help her, Lara must overcome the challenges of a harsh and unforgiving journey that will take her across a vast island wilderness and deep into the claustrophobic and menacing underground tombs from the island's past.

As she struggles to prevail through brutal combat encounters and treacherous exploration, Lara will be pushed to her limited and forced to adapt to her situation in order to survive and escape from the lethal predators that stalk her every move.

* Hunt or be Hunted: Evade, outsmart, track and kill the mysterious enemies that hunt you as prey.

* Survival Action: Brutally attack and defend yourself as you fight to survive the visceral one-on-one melee combat.

* Strategic Weapons: Gain an advantage in combat by finding an array of different melee and ranged weapons including a variety of guns and the hunter's ultimate weapon, the bow.

* Creative Survival: React and adapt to the island by using only that which you can salvage from the environment like climbing axes, rope, and machetes that can be used to unlock new traversal and combat gameplay options.

* Free Movement: Scramble up a vertical cliff wall, sprint and leap across a huge chasm, steer mid-air to land a misdirected jump. There is no one right way to traverse, survive, and explore the harsh environment of the island.

* One Cohesive World: the diverse multi-region island is an open playground alive with creatures, weather, and natural events.

* Origin Story: This new Tomb Raider concept reboots the franchise by exploring the origin of Lara Croft's transformation into a hardened adventurer as you unravel the story behind the island's mysterious past.

The bit about an "open playground" fits with reports back in September that the new Tomb Raider will be an open world game.

We're expecting a Tomb Raider reveal in two weeks. Stay tuned.

Tomb Raider reboot announced

Crystal Dynamics' long-rumoured Tomb Raider reboot is official.

"After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach," reads the press release.

"On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive."

Tomb Raider features a young and inexperienced Lara Croft in her first adventure. US magazine Game Informer has the first images, which you can see below.

Lara is shown battered and bruised with a crumbling ship in the background.

"Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider," said Darrell Gallagher, head of studio at Crystal Dynamics.

"This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other."

The Tomb Raider reboot was one of the worst-kept secrets in gaming.

In June Eurogamer brought you the news that Crystal Dynamics was hard at work on the game. We heard then that it should be released during the Christmas period 2011.

Eurogamer understands Tomb Raider will be released for multiple platforms including PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

The new Lara Croft is how old?

The brand new Lara Croft will only be 21 years-old and, each time you make a mistake, you'll graphically see her demise: a boulder pinning her leg before another rumbles down and crushes her face, for instance, or a man brutally stabbing her chest before he stoops over to close her eyes.

The new Tomb Raider also ditches auto-lock aiming, according to NeoGAF's detail-pillage of the Game Informer piece (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=415089). Crystal Dynamics says the new shooting system will compete with any other game out there - Uncharted obviously being the benchmark. To that end, the new Tomb Raider will employ a hefty dose of performance capture, and this will extend to the various other humans on the island.

There's a waft of the open-world about the new Tomb Raider, as base camps become places for you to combine and perhaps create new items. There are new areas where you can develop Lara's skills using an upgrade system. Our heroine won't begin as a hardened survivor, but over time she'll scavenge new gear and with it new abilities that will make accessible more of the island to her.

Base camps also serve as destinations to fast travel around the map from, which suggests there may be some to-and-froing. Crystal Dynamics promises a seamless, load-free world.

Oh, and you'll be required to keep your food and water reserves up, too.

The Tomb Raider reboot was unveiled yesterday. The story follows "a frightened young" Lara as she's shipwrecked on an island, alone. And this is no Isle of Wight - sounds like there'll be trouble ahead.

Lara Croft was "losing relevance"

Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics decided to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise because heroine Lara Croft was starting to lose relevance, so says brand director Karl Stewart.

In a Rock Paper Shotgun (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/07/18/interview-tomb-raiders-karl-stewart) interview, Stewart argued that gamers were struggling to relate to the invincible, infallible old Lara. Conversely, the revised take on the gaming icon will be more more grounded and accessible.

"I think Lara's a beloved character and Crystal has really enjoyed their time they've been able to spend with her," explained Stewart.

"We felt she was losing some relevance in the gaming world, that she was a little too hard and removed. We wanted to make her more approachable and relatable.

"I think she became an icon," he added. "When you do, you remove yourself from relatability. We wanted to bring her to a place where she didn’t have all those skills, she wasn’t perfect. The modern gamer can relate to that, they want a complex hero."

Stewart noted that another factor in the decision to go back to square one was that the studio had run out of new stories it could tell with the original Lara.

"I think Lara had done all the growing she could. We'd taken her to a great place, to somewhere she had some closure. There weren’t really many more stories we could have told. So we feel like with this new place we have fertile ground and there’s a lot of places we can go."

The last entry proper in the long-running adventure franchise was the sturdy Tomb Raider: Underworld back in 2008, with an excellent top down spin-off, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, hitting download services last year.

The new look Tomb Raider is scheduled to launch on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in Autumn 2012.

Tomb Raider reboot delayed until 2013

The upcoming Tomb Raider reboot has been delayed until 2013, developer Crystal Dynamics has announced.

Tomb Raider will now launch during the first quarter of 2013 - sometime between January and March next year - instead of this autumn.

Crystal Dyanmics studio boss Darrell Gallagher explained that the extra time will be used to add polish to the game, which tells the tale of a young Lara Croft's adventuring origins.

"When Crystal Dynamics first set out to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise, there were two goals that we were extremely passionate about," Gallagher explained in a post on the official Eidos forums. "The first was to create a modern Tomb Raider game that would surprise and excite gamers. The second was to make this the best game of our careers, something we would be really proud to be a part of. We truly believe that we have something very special on our hands and we can't wait to share it with you.

"Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest quality game.

"We're doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve."

A single new screenshot was released to accompany the news, showing a tree-swinging Lara encountering a long-dead island inhabitant.

Having now seen the E3 stuff for this, and in spite of it leaving the "roots" of the franchise from what I hear/can see, I'm actually thinking I might give this a go - looks decent, though really in a Tomb Raider I do want a little more than running around killing people. Crystal Dynamics denies claims of attempted r*pe in Tomb Raider (http://www.oxm.co.uk/42808/crystal-dynamics-denies-claims-of-attempted-r*pe-in-tomb-raider/)

It's an 'M' / '18' rated game, so I don't see the problem.

A young pre-badass Laura Croft is stranded on an island with wild animals and psychopath criminal pirate/scavengers.  Defending yourself against r*pe attempts while taken prisoner seems like a very plausible (if not obvious) situation.

Hell, even if they did an Uncharted prequel where a 19 year old Nathan Drake is taken prisoner by a group of pirates, I think it's safe to assume he'd be worried about the same thing.

Whether the studio intentionally created a scenario where Laura has to fight off a would-be rapist, I'd say that makes for great character development.  I'd rate r*pe pretty high on the list of motivations to fight for survival.

Placing a pre-order for this, simply because I'm impressed at the direction they're trying to take Lara Croft as a character and partially because I'm concerned that if this doesn't do well that they'll revert to a more plasticine version which didn't really feel as interesting, in my opinion.

Tomb Raider To Boast Multiplayer, "A Long Time In The Making"

Tomb Raider will have multiplayer, it's been revealed today, with OXM set to sport the cover story revealing all of the salient details regarding the mode that's been "a long time in the making".

Secretly in development at Crystal Dynamics' sister studio, Eidos Montreal (known for its stellar work on Deus Ex: Human Revolution), Tomb Raider's multiplayer is apparently "inspired by the overwhelmingly positive response to co-op play in Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light."

Seems like a co-op mode could be in the offing then, possibly casting the second player in the role of that old bloke sharing the cover of OXM's big exposé. Either way, Tomb Raider will have multiplayer. Make of that what you will.

Tomb Raider is out on March 5th, 2013.

Tomb Raider Multiplayer Has Bleed Outs, Team Deathmatch

Details of Tomb Raider’s multiplayer have been revealed, including info on three different modes.

In Team Deathmatch a team of Lara's surviving allies and a group of hostile natives called scavengers fight it out in a best of three matches, with players alternating between sides.

The twist comes with the presence of destructible environments including bridges, and lever-based traps that spit out lethal spikes.

Another of the modes is called Rescue, in which survivors deliver med packs to destinations across the map, while scavengers try and rack up the kills.

There’s another mode too, called Cry for Help. Details on this one are a little scant, but apparently the mode emphasises exploration and collection, not combat.

Multiplayer takes a leaf out of Gears of War’s book, in that when you are downed you have a bleed out time that can be cut short with brutal finishers.

Players will be able to choose from a variety of characters, each with their own stats and loadouts. You can access weapons from the single-player campaign, including the bow, grenades, guns and an axe.

Plus, of course, there’s XP which can be used to improve your stats and buy new characters.

Tomb Raider’s multiplayer was announced over Christmas, to a skeptical reception. It will be developed by Deus Ex: Human Revolution creator Eidos Montreal.

The multiplayer info comes via Official Xbox Magazine, via the Tomb Raider forums. It's not official info, but looks to be on the money.

No demo - Good or Bad?

Via [Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/5977036/tomb-raider-isnt-getting-a-demo-because-we-dont-want-to-spoil-the-story)]
Quote
No demo version is planned for Tomb Raider, said Karl Stewart of the game's studio, Crystal Dynamics, because doing so would reveal too much of the story before the game's release.

"We've weaved such an personal story we don't believe spoiling it by having you wait a week or so to play on, delivers on our promise," he said via Twitter on Wednesday.

The good news, however: "There's no Season or Online Pass," Stewart added yesterday, a welcome change and a small surprise given this game will feature multiplayer for the first time in the series' history.

Tomb Raider releases March 5 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

If Crystal Dynamics were being more secretive about the game, the lack of a demo would give reason to suspect the game is a disaster.  But plenty of respectable gaming news sources have had hands-on time with it with positive results.

I'm not worried.  I wouldn't have time to play the demo anyway.   ;)

ps.  Great news about no season/online pass.  I no like them.

Tomb Raider DLC pack Caves and Cliffs is timed Xbox 360 exclusive
Three new maps unveiled, due 19th March

Microsoft done love that there Tomb Raider so much they've exclusivised the game's first map pack, as revealed by the official Tumlbr page. Releasing on 19th March, the Caves and Cliffs DLC introduces three new maps for all four online modes, and will cost 400 MP.

Scavenger Caverns is "an extensive subterranean network of caves used by the island's scavengers as an underground prison", while the vertiginous Cliff Shantytown's "many layers hide some of the deadliest traps on the island". The Burning Village, finally, is indeed a burning village. Its buildings "offer multiple ways to escape or engage your enemies".

Any takers? And what do you think of the multiplayer in general? Crystal Dynamics' Noah Hughes has said the developer is "anxious" to "explore" this aspect of the reboot further in future Tomb Raider games, which presumably chimes with publisher Square Enix's digital revenue plans. Nothing makes for easy, high-earning DLC quite like a multiplayer mode, after all.

UK chart: Tomb Raider biggest launch of the year so far
Doubles sales of Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Tomb Raider is the UK's biggest launch of the year so far.

The reboot is in top spot, and, according to UK sales company Chart-Track, "comfortably" outsold 2013's previous best, Sega's Aliens: Colonial Marines, by more than double the week one sell-through.

In fact, this new Tomb Raider set a new record for the franchise in the UK. The previous best was Crystal Dynamics' first game in the series, Tomb Raider: Legend, which in 2006 sold around half what the new Tomb Raider sold.

It should be noted though, that Tomb Raider (2013) is the first in the series to launch as an "event title", that is, on Tuesday 5th March, and so had six days of sales to count towards its launch total. But, countering this, PC download sales are not included in Chart-Track's data, so sales from Steam, for example, aren't counted.

More records: the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Tomb Raider set new week one records as the fastest-selling individual formats of any Tomb Raider release so far. The previous record was held by Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, which released on PS2 in 2003.

EA's SimCity enters the chart in second place. Again, it should be noted that PC sales through EA's digital platform Origin are not counted by Chart-Track.

Elsewhere, Namco Bandai's Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 is a new entry at three, and EA The Sims 3: University Life, the ninth (!) expansion pack for The Sims 3, is new at four.

FIFA 13 is fifth and last week's number one, EA's Crysis 3, is down to sixth.

Tomb Raider Single-Player DLC? There's "No Plans" Says Crystal Dynamics

Finished Tomb Raider's single-player? Looking forward to sinking your teeth into more? Well, it looks like you can forget it, as Crystal Dynamics apparently has "no plans" for single-player DLC. Any add-ons released for the game will apparently support multiplayer, like the recently released Caves & Cliffs Multiplayer Map Pack.

"There are currently no plans in place for any Single Player expansions," said Tomb Raider's Global Brand Director, Karl Stewart in a Reddit. "All of our DLC is based around the Multiplayer experience for now."

It was hoped that Tomb Raider would add single-player DLC in the form of extra tombs or narrative, but that doesn't appear to be the case. Even Lara's classic outfit won't be added as DLC, despite numerous fan requests.

"We did try to have a lot of nods to the classics in this reboot," Creative Director Noah Hughes stated. "And even her outfit itself is intended to evoke her classic outfit in a way, but is more practical for her situation. This was just an example of trying to play that balance between fresh and familiar."

Pah!

Can't speak much on the gameplay or challenge aspect, haven't played it yet.. :P - but I'm still intrigued in the direction that they've taken the series from where it used to be. Again, not the gameplay (I'll figure that out sometime soon), but the concept of a more realistic approach.

To me, the game is enough of a challenge in places to not be boring, but not so tough that I couldn't manage to get past something after a few attempts.  But my skill level at games is rather low.  I've been a Tomb Raider fan since the first game, and this one didn't disappoint me at all.  I have yet to try the MP though and don't really have a desire to play it.
