Hated it when my launch console died on me though it did last over 3 years, MS fixed it only for it to die again 2 days later, MS fixed it again and it managed another year or so before biting the big one so I bought a new one.    :)

If you get a new console make sure you pick up a data transfer cable to you move all your stuff to the new xbox.   :)

And how long does the "fix" for RROD last?

If by "fix" you mean the towel/overheat trick, it will only last until the internal thermal paste shifts again, maybe a day, maybe a week depending on how often you use your 360.

You can permenantly "fix" a console for $4 using some bolts and better thermal paste.  I used THIS KIT to fix my sister's 360 in 2009, and it's still running.  :)

ps.  It goes without saying, tampering with the inside of your 360 will void any warranty it may have, and also runs the risk of being banned if you don't put it back togethe properly.  Follow THIS TUTORIAL closely.

I've had my Xbox 360 replaced about 3 times by MS, on account of the RROD. This latest system has thankfully, lasted over a couple of years. I had an Xbox Elite also go RROD, tried the "fixes" and it worked for about a two or three weeks, so I'd say it's a crapshoot, but if it's out of warranty that may be your best shot.

OR -

I haven't done it, but I've heard some Gamestops offer to "fix" systems for a fee if you don't feel like gutting the console yourself. I'm willing to bet the work isn't guaranteed past the 90days or so though.

Good luck!

I'd say try the coin trick and back up everything onto cloud, only game saves are necessary since everything else is easily replaced. There are some saves that cannot be put onto usb such as Gears 3/ME2 so that's why I say use cloud. If you have it working with the cent coins just trade it in against a new slim (don't tell them anything!!!).

Do you reckon that'll void the warranty?  ;)

Thank god for the new Tomb Raider, helped me de-stress after a tough week! More of the same please

You can check the warranty through [Xbox.com Support Page]. If it's already expired, you pretty much have nothing to lose by trying the fix. Unless, like Neato said, you risk some sort of XBox Live banning.

Apparently, the Red Light problem's become such a standard thing that there's a [Flashing Red Lights Wizard]

I was thinking alright that you modded with the ME design, that leaves out a sneaky fix and  trade!

It amazes me though about the damp towel on an electronic device, people are nuts I swear. Think of the logic on that one!

I don't think the towel needs to be damp, just a dry towel should work. Still hit or miss though. Good luck with it Elle.

I've always read it as a damp towel and thought why, moisture/electricity why not just put the screw driver straight into the live socket?!

It's crazy but the coin fix makes so much sense technically.
