Sony's hack 'n' slash sequel God Of War III has soared to the top of the all-format chart within its first week of release.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 retains second place, above last week's number one Final Fantasy XIII, which drops to third.

The midway point sees this week's only other new entry Metro 2033 grab fifth, above Wii Fit Plus and Sony's second big hitter Heavy Rain in sixth and seventh respectively.

The top ten in full:

1. (-) God Of War III (Sony)
2. (2) Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Electronic Arts)
3. (1) Final Fantasy XIII (Square Enix)
4. (3) Just Dance (Ubisoft)
5. (-) Metro 2033 (THQ)
6. (5) Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)
7. (4) Heavy Rain (Sony)
8. (9) Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
9. (7) Sonic And Sega All-stars Racing (Sega)
10. (6) Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision)

UK CHART: Splinter Cell stays top
Monster Hunter Tri makes the top five, Dead To Rights: Retribution disappoints

Ubisoft's Splinter Cell: Conviction retained the top spot on the ELSPA/GfK-ChartTrack UK All Formats chart during the week ended April 24.

Just Dance and GTA: Episodes From Liberty City were also non-movers in second and third, ahead of Wii Fit Plus and the week's highest new entry, Monster Hunter Tri.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was down to spots to sixth, followed by Wii Sports Resort, Modern Warfare 2, Just Cause 2 and Pokemon Soulsilver.

Namco Bandai's Dead To Rights: Retribution was less well received, the PS3 and Xbox 360 game debuting at 22.

01. Splinter Cell: Conviction (Ubisoft)
02. Just Dance (Ubisoft)
03. GTA: Episodes From Liberty City (Take-Two)
04. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)
05. Monster Hunter Tri (Capcom)
06. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (EA)
07. Wii Sport Resort (Nintendo)
08. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision)
09. Just Cause 2 (Square Enix)
10. Pokemon Soulsilver (Nintendo)
