... back on topic :D ...

Bobbus, the 'wrapper' is a good idea.  It sort of accomplishes what I want to do, but still requires users to have 2 separate logins.

I've researched a 'bridge' between SMF and Joomla, but unfortunately there has not been an officially supported bridge for a while.

The 2 options I gave myself was
     1.  Dump SMF and rebuild a forum compatible with Joomla.
     2.  Dump Joomla and rebuild a front page compatible with SMF.

Since the forum makes up 90% of our community's home, I've been leaning towards SMF's favor.  There are even a number of mods and feature packages that expand the capabilities of SMF to function as more than just a forum.  I've played around with some, but haven't had enough time to consider any permenant possibilities.

TJ did a fantastic job using Joomla and SMF to build us a new home when we desperately needed one.  I do not think it was TJ's intention to not improve it, but as the community (and TJ's family) grew and time passed, it became increasingly more difficult to make many changes.

Keep the great feedback coming, Bobbus.  I always welcome new ideas.

Firstly, I'm sorry if I am deamed one of the 'vultures', that's really not my intention. I was just trying out an idea and gathering feedback. You guys have created a decent community here and I was just offering my ideas to help sustain and possibly improve it. TJ has as many of you say started something good here and I wasn't trying to detract from that, merely offer a possible solution to a problem.

Secondly, Neato - I think you're right to go down the SMF path as that will definitely be simpler and less problematic going forward. Like you say, there are plenty of mods and portals etc that could expand the possibilities of the site. If you want I could set up a test SMF forum to play around with. We could let everyone test stuff on there and gather feedback. If members like a certain add-on or mod then we could incorperate it into the main site.

Quick suggestion - now we have a few new members kicking about is it worth locking 'Games Night' threads after a set amount of time?

We've seen lately that old threads for games nights have been re-kindled when it would make more sense to start a new more current thread.

Just an idea and thought I throw it out for discussion.

hmmm, i did post something on one thread from last September, but i like to let new people mooch over what they want, they'll soon return to the graveyard of 'page 2'

i'll go have a lookeh at the coop and game night forums now to check.

I know what you mean, that its good for new members to read through the old stuff but is it a good thing that they post about an old and dead co-op gaming night?

not sure what the answer is (yet) but the threads need to encourage participation whilst not getting hopes up of a co-op session on 'XYZ' if its a dead thread.

yes if they need coop, then they should start a new thread. I locked MW2 spec ops, neato sorted the other thread about Halo Legend, Wars and UT3.

I think UT3 and Halo Wars will head down pretty quick, Legendary might happen though.

Is there an answer that doesn't involve more work for the Admin guys?

Otherwise you'll have to read every co-op thread, spam comment and then lock appropriatley... ;)

nah we won't, if an old thread resurfaces, i can let whoever know to start a new thread and then lock the old one. It's not like 20 a day are coming back, just 2 this week. Nice and easy, Game Night Mod is a bum, he has a whole 2 forums to look after.  ;)

Failed,

If you'd like, you can post a "READ FIRST" sticky topic at the top of the board explaining to create a new topic if the last one is more than XX months old.  That may save you some work down the road.

I've increased the "Modify" post time limit to 1 hour.

Hopefully this will improve everyone's ability to learn & correct post problems (hyperlinks, insert images, etc.) without a great risk of ruining the flow of existing conversations.

I'm going to do a lot of trimming in the forum.  I've merged the INTRODUCE YOURSELF and POST YOUR GAMERTAG sections to make the whole thing more streamlined.  I'll be doing similar things as time allows.

In case you're worried, I will not be deleting anything.  Out-of-place threads will be moved.  Similar threads will be merged.  Old irrelevant threads will be locked.  But nothing will be deleted.

So if you can't find a certain topic, please use the search button.  If you still can't find what you're looking for, feel free to PM me and I'll link you in the right direction.

UPDATE:
I've merged the "News & Updates" board with "The Feedback Loop".  It is now called "Feedback & Updates".

I've also moved several out-of-place topics to the boards they belong to.  If you have trouble finding a discussion, use the search button.  If you still can't find it, let me know.
