Borderlands

5 Stars

Borderlands is a game that split a lot of people's opinions.  A lot of people bought it, assuming it was like Fallout 3 or Halo 3.  These people were disappointed and not afraid to voice it.

The heart of Borderlands isn't about what it's not, but what it is.  It's an amazing co-op FPS with colorful characters, rich humor, and sprinkled with a little RPG for flavor.  It's a game that has that rare quality that makes it enjoyable to revisit after letting it sit on the shelf for months (which I did often, obviously).

I give the core game 5 stars.  If I factor in all of the DLC, I would have to give it 4.5 stars, but that rounds up to 5 stars anyways.   ;)  Here my opinions of the DLC.

Zombie Island.  5 stars.  Creative, funny, and managed to break away from the signature Borderlands tone without losing any of the enjoyment.

The Underdome.  2 stars.  Forget about the marathon play sessions required to get the achievements.  What really disappoints is simply the lack of content.  Underdome is made up of only 3 small areneas, plus 1 even smaller hub / lobby area.  The only redeeming qualities of The Underdome is the introduction of the great character Moxxi, and the addition of a "bank" feature to expand your item storage.  Even then, I only give it 2 stars.

Secret Armory.  5 Stars.  Secret Armory has everything.  Fun story, cool enemies, and lots and lots and LOTS of loot!

New Revolution.  4 Stars.  Could have easily been 5 stars if not for the tedious collectible missions.  Similar to the collectible missions in Zombie Island, but without the humorous incentives.

When Sambo starts playing, Loot, Kini, and Zero can escort him through the tougher missions like Slamurai and I did for them.

Just finished up Borderlands and I'd echo Neato on the rating(s).

It's a slow burn initially, but quickly picks up and burns at a faster pace, especially when the DLC and Co-Op are introduced. I liked the fact that the weaponry seemed to constantly grow and expand in qualities and abilities from the very get-go. The world feels extremely accessible, mostly having to do with the humor and characters, also, while the areas are vast it never felt too isolated.

I wouldn't say that it's a better "Fallout 3" or "Fallout: New Vegas", but it's got a bit of a quicker pace and feels deceivingly less like a lumbering juggernaut than either of the two aforementioned games. Plus, Skag Riding Midgets with dynamite - how could you resist?

[I'll be keeping this around for a while if anyone wants to play some to either level up or have some general fun on Pandora.]

I'll rate Insect Armageddon on Failed's behalf...

4/5

Very short campaign. Lacks the charm and cheese factor of the first one, which wasn't everyone's cup of tea (losers). Some welcome changes though, with reviving team mates, jet packs and the sprint button (no more shoulder rolling all over the place). Cheevos are not hard, but will involve a hell of a lot of grinding. I'm hoping I won't become sick of the game and lose interest in completing it.

Overall I would recommend it. We need more people than me and Failed to buy it so we can play 6 player survival mode.

I've not got around to playing the Saints Row games, They have not appealed to me (considering I've not even completed GTA IV yet).

4/5

Having been a fan of Castlevania ever since Symphony of the Night I approached this cautiously despite the glowing reviews (Castlevania tends not to do so well in 3D) and initially I wasn't too impressed but after a couple of levels I started to take the game on it's own merits and boy am I glad I did.

Gameplay wise it's very reminiscent of God of War (big combos, big baddies and lots of gore) although elements of Tomb Raider appear while traversing the terrain.

The story is pure Castlevania and I won't say more than that as I'll ruin it, needless to say there are some big twists.

The best thing about the game though is it's glorious and varied graphics, I never got tired of the scenery which ranges from medieval villages and castles to stunning forests and frozen lakes and the bosses are so huge!

The only thing that let the game down for me were literally the last 10 minutes being far too easy....

Condemned  3 stars

Finally got around to playing this, Having owned it for more than 2 years. It's o.k, It looks a little dated now, Which is to be expected.
I just found it to be a little repetative, And I know it's a horror game but does it have to be so dark all the time, I mean your little flashlight hardly lights up a corner and with no map I found myself going round in circles sometimes. I would say for the price you can pick this up for nowdays it's worth a bash.

Not a bad play back in the day, still have it around, I (naively) figure I'll attempt some of the left over achievements some day. :P
