Insomniac eyed 360 'for many years'
PlayStation developer has been toying with the cross-platform move for a while.

Insomniac Games has admitted to considering a move onto Xbox 360 "for many years", reports CVG.

Insomniac - developer of Spyro The Dragon, Ratchet & Clank and Resistance - has announced that it will be creating its first ever multiplatform game, to be published by EA. It marks the first time one of their titles will appear on Xbox 360.

Yet it's something the studio has thought about for years.

"We've talked for many years now about our desire to reach a broader audience on the Xbox 360 with our games," explained Insomniac CEO Ted Price.

"Working with EA Partners - one of the best multiplatform publishers in the world - allows us to do that, as well as retaining the rights to our intellectual property."

Insomniac says the brand new title won't be shown off at E3, so we'll have to sit tight for a while to find out what their 360 project will be.

I agree... I also think online should be cross platform but as my understanding is very little I do get it's very very hard to do

Can't wait for Shenmue 3

I hate jokes that rely on visual imagery.

I've had it right up to here with them.

I disagree, every console shoud have it's big exclusives, that way we can all argue about which console is better because of those exclusives.  It would be boring if every game was multi platform, I likes me some console banter  ;D

Sony boss saddened by Insomniac Xbox move
Shuhei Yoshida reveals his feelings over multiformat announcement

The head of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has said that he was saddened by Insomniac's decision to become a multi-platform developer.

The developer announced earlier this year that it had struck a deal with EA to bring its new IP to both Xbox 360 and PS3 - ending two decades of Sony exclusivity.

EA made its confidence in Insomniac clear when it stated that they think 360 development will double Insomniac's sales.

"We grew up together," said Yoshida.

"We had a long-lasting partnership with the studio's management team, and I personally was the producer in Japan for Spyro the Dragon and Rachet & Clank."

Yoshida went on to reveal that Sony were aware of their intention to switch since 2008, when the developer expressed desires to to break away. He described Insomniac as "very open about their need to grow and their intention".

The studio recently said that they had been eyeing up the 360 for many years and this was reflected in Yoshida's comments.

"They want to reach the people they haven't been able to"

"so it was sad to hear a couple of years ago what their intent was, but as we are growing, Insomniac is growing too"

"And the studio has its own ambition, so I totally understand, and I am very happy how they approached the announcement. They made sure that people know they are still working with us."

Although he expressed his sadness openly he remained optimistic and was happy about the possibility of more Insomniac title on the PS3.

"When you think about it, Insomniac is making multiplatform games. So PS3 owners should be happy because they are getting more Insomniac games as the studio hires more staff to develop more games" said Yoshida.

Insomniac was one of the few developers that helped define both the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, it will be interesting to see what they have in store for the Xbox 360.

Mad World is a great game. Shadow Run was cross platform....It was also shite :-\

Boo! Shadowrun was a genius that nobody appreciated!

Also, the least amount of stupidity I've ever encountered in an Xbox Live game (via headsets). I don't know if that was just a fluke, or if the gameplay was ugly enough to scare off the most annoying players (ie 98% of the Live population).

Whatever the case may be, I'll take a somewhat bad game with less Xbox Live douchebaggery over a great AAA game that is chalk full of goons.

As to the issue of crossplatform: Microsoft and Xbox simply must, must, MUST start supporting dedicated servers for their games. This Peer2Peer crap made sense back in the early days of Live when not a lot of people used the service which meant having to play with a lot of people from all over the world to get a full match going, but now Live is large enough that we can do dedicated servers that are more localized. What benefits come with dedicated servers?
  • They support a larger player limit.
  • Hit detection vastly improves because you can take it off of the client.
  • They can support server-side mods.
  • They foster a community of non-asshats.

For that last point alone, dedicated servers are worth the trouble. I was excited when Shadowrun was announced as crossplatform that they were going to go the dedicated server route when they brought PC gamers into the mix. Instead they threw out all the benefits that PC gaming brings and just put a lousy peer2peer game out that both platforms could play but really wouldn't want to.
Your mom!

Longevity is my biggest concern.  Dedicated servers go down, but P2P is always there as long as someone else is on the other end.

If a game offers both dedicated and P2P, I will choose dedicated.  That is until they take down their servers.
