Title: Dead Island
Post by: nCogNeato on February 16, 2011, 03:59:18 PM
First announced in 2007, the FPS/RPG hybrid has resurfaced (http://360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_forum1/index.php?topic=244.msg56370#msg56370), and is now slated for a 2011(?) release for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Goes to show what good editing can do for a trailer:

Having it "fixed" chornologically, seems to lose a lot of the impact...

Agreed.  It's still a very cool suspensful trailer, but without the 'reveal' of the girl being a zombie ... and being their daughter, it does lose a lot of the impact.

It also raises a very important question ...

Why the hell was a 10-year-old girl running around a resort by herself in the first place?!?  0min 47sec it's clear the parents are alone in the room together while the girl is left to wander the island alone.  Seriously ... that's more disturbing to me than the zombies.

If you look closely, as I have, the parents both have brown hair, while the kid is a full on blonde. Conclusion? The kid is the result of an affair, and the father secretly hates her. That is why he barricades her out of the room, and then throws her out of a window as soon as she gets in.

And he unleashed the zombie hordes as a means of disguising the fact he wanted to get shot of his daughter, makes sense!

Dead Island's Logo Too Grisly For America's Ratings Board

Much hyped zombie game Dead Island has gotten the attention of the ESRB  for its logo of all things. Hanging zombies are a no-no, it seems, as the game's logo has been "censored" to remove that dangling corpse. That change affects the game's box art in North America only, reports IGN (http://pc.ign.com/articles/115/1156850p1.html).

I'm not particularly surprised that a hanging picture would get a no-go, but I'm still a bit embarrassed at all the political correctness none the less.

Dead Island Comic Now Available Digitally

Deep Silver has today released a six-page comic book, which tells the story leading up to the events you'll play through in Dead Island when it launches in a few weeks time.

The Dead Island comic book introduces a new character called Robert Howard, a journalist who's travelled to the island paradise of Banoi to investigate illegal exploitation of the island's resources. Upon his exploration of Banoi's Royal Palms Resort hotel, Howard discovers a terrible secret.

Dead Island's prequel comic book story was penned by the creative team at Marvel Custom Solutions, which consists of writer William Dailey and artists Jorge Lucas, Juan Santacruz, Diego Olmos, Carlos Rodriguez and Sergio Arino. The Dead Island comic also features some screaming zombie cleavage on the cover (pictured) by Christian Nauck.

You can flick through the Dead Island digital comic book now over at marvel.com/digitalcomics (https://subscriptions.marvel.com/digitalcomics/view_white.htm?iid=22757). Dead Island is out on September 6th in North America and September 9th in Europe.

Lesson for Dead Island developers: Allow players to mute other players.

I just got done playing with a guy who was evidently multitasking by playing while watching a porno at the same time. At first I couldn't tell what it was... Between the moments of all the loud zombie killing action I would hear strange, non-zombie-killing-related noises and I was wondering what the crap that was. I thought maybe he was talking to his wife or something, because I could hear a female voice in there. Turns out that the reason why I couldn't understand what the chick was saying was because she wasn't so much saying things as she was moaning things.

I tried to wait it out, but it was like the longest porn ever. Eventually I had to leave because I couldn't hear the cutscene dialogue over all the sexing.

I just beat this game. It clocked in at 16 hours, and I wouldn't mind seconds. It started to get a little sloppy and draggy towards the end (way too many tedious escort missions in Act 3), but it felt pretty tight otherwise.

I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised by this one.

They're escort missions but not like Dead Rising escort missions, they generally can help themselves and are no where near as annoying as Dead Rising or some other games escort missions where the person you're escorting is like a freaking child.

True, but what bothered me about the escort missions in Dead Island is that they are so damn long. Towards the end of the game you spend a solid half hour traipsing through the jungle protecting some dude with a grass skirt and a bone through his nose, then when you get him to his destination you IMMEDIATELY turn around and hold some random chick's hand all the way back. And I mean immediately, as in you get to the destination, there is a cut scene that makes absolutely no sense, and you turn around and come back with random lady in tow.

Better still, just when you think you are done escorting the random lady this other random Jamaican dude, who you earlier told to stay on the boat, decides to get off of the boat and you have to save and escort HIM as well.

Was it a small part of the game? Yes, but I still found it annoying.

I just really don't like 1st person games, they just feel wrong to me, the only 1st person game I can honestly say I enjoy is Bad Company 2, I like to see my character, I don't want to pretend to be him/her!

Yeah if you don't like first person games or loot rpgs then Dead Island probably isn't the game for you.

I tend not to like loot rpgs, but I am a simple enough man to just be able to enjoy dismembering zombies for hours on end, so Dead Island worked for me.

There's some tomb somewhere where you fight some crazy undead Amazon warrior which gives you the most powerful sword in the game (I think).  Once I levelled up enough to take her out it was the first thing I did.

I played most of the game stealth with a bow.  But in those moments where stealth wasn't going to save my ass, I pulled out Ye Ole' Stab-a-lot and got sh*t done.

The Umbra Sword (thanks google), cheers neato, i will look into this!

This all sounds familiar.  It's been a couple years so it's a little foggy.  Maybe we should take this discussion to the Oblivion topic?  lol

I can't believe JT doesn't like BioShock?!?   :o

I absolutely hated Bioshock, I only completed it because I was laid up with a twisted ankle and had nothing better to do! I just really don't like 1st person games, they just feel wrong to me, the only 1st person game I can honestly say I enjoy is Bad Company 2, I like to see my character, I don't want to pretend to be him/her!

I didn't really like Bioshock either. I thought it was pretentious poop. Bioshock's only saving grace was that the broken upgrade system allowed me to complete the game using the wrench almost exclusively (I had to take out the old crossbow for the final boss).

What's that, a fire splicer? Ooooh, scary. COME GET SOME WRENCH, SUCKA!

LOL, I found it so repetitive, same 5 or 6 enemies and back and forth over the same bit of the map over an over again, was just really boring!

Not trying to pit one game against another here, because I'm a believer most games have some kind of redeming quality, but BC2/CoD/etc. (or more popular FPS) have no memorable enemies to speak of (surprisingly killing generic armed forces hasn't gotten old enough to sink these franchises) and most set pieces look exactly the same (there's a jungle scene, a destroyed urban environment, your helicopter scene, rinse, repeat, etc..). It's a trapping for most the gaming industry, unfortunately.

Narrative, setting, and atmosphere kept Bioshock interesting to me, some gameplay elements weren't probably the best in the world, but hate's a strong word I only reserve for the likes of most film based games. I'm looking at you Terminator: Salvation and Ironman.  >:(

Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition is now official and ready to ruin your summer vacation plans on June 26. First revealed earlier this month by the British Board of Film Classification, the GOTY packs includes the standard game, along with downloadable content "Ryder White," "Bloodbath Arena" and "The Ripper."

The tropical zombie apocalypse RPG, which has sold over three million copies worldwide, will be released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC for $29.99.

I might just pick up the GOTY edition, if only for the fact that I don't already have Ryder White or the Ripper mod. I have been using character builds I found on youtube. They were developed by a dude named TrendKiLLv01 and I've been having fun with them.
