Need for Speed: Shift 2 Unleashed

'Bland' Gran Turismo, Forza graphics avoided by NFS: Shift 2 - dev
Producer talks about performance and visuals

Shift 2: Unleashed producer Marcus Nilsson has said that EA's upcoming Need For Speed sequel won't match Forza's 60 frames per second performance, but indicated it will be a far more vibrant game as a result.

In an interview with Official Xbox 360 Magazine, Nilsson was asked if the development team was chasing Forza's 60 FPS performance.

He replied by saying that he believed developers made a choice between bland graphics, pointing to Forza and Gran Turismo as examples, or pushing consoles whilst taking a slight performance hit.

"You have to make a choice with today's tech. Either you go for - and this is harsh but it's what I think - the bland graphics of GT and Forza, or you try to push the bar for what consoles can do," said Nilsson.

"That's what Slightly Mad is doing, and hence the decision was made to aim for 30 frames," he added.

A trailer for the next Need For Speed game, Shift 2: Unleashed, has revealed that the game will be hitting shelves in the UK on March 25.

The trailer, which you can find below, is the US version which shows their release date of March 29. The European trailer shows a release date of March 24, which is a Thursday. It stands to reason that the UK release date would then by Friday March 25, as games are traditionally released on Fridays over here.

It also shows some pretty impressive in-game footage. It's being developed by Slightly Mad Studios and will feature Autolog, a social feature that was introduced to the series in Hot Pursuit.

Proof that even though Shift 2 has dropped the Need For Speed name, it still remains a member of the NFS family.

On our only Burnout Game Night, it was universally decided Burnout Paradise is lame online and has never been played since.

I dropped into some online sessions a few times, it's a drag to get anything organized on that map, so from that aspect, yeah, it blew. Burnout: Revenge was on point though.
