Killzone 3

Killzone 3 is coming, promises Tretton

Sony Computer Entertainment America boss Jack Tretton has said a third instalment in the Killzone series is on the way.

He was speaking to Game Trailers during the PlayStation Move event at the Game Developers Conference. "This is just the frosting on the cake," he said. "I'm saving the batter for E3. We will absolutely bring the heat."

When asked whether said batter will include an official Killzone 3 announcement, Tretton pointed out that Sony owns Guerrilla Games and that the studio did "a great job" on the first two titles.

"I don't know if you'll see announcements about it, but I can promise you a Killzone 3," he added.

Tretton was then asked whether we'll see anything of Agent at E3. "That's a better question for our friends at Rockstar," he replied, but did confirm the game is a PlayStation 3 exclusive. "I've seen good stuff, I'm very confident in Rockstar," Tretton said.

This year's E3 will take place from 15th - 17th June at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Killzone 3 detailed in US magazine scans

Scans from the latest issue of GamePro have outed Killzone 3, the inevitable PS3-exclusive first-person shooter sequel from Guerrilla Games, and revealed that it features jetpacks, ice levels and a 3D mode.

According to the preview, Killzone 3 picks up after the events of the second game as a small band of ISA troopers - including Sev and Rico - are forced to contend with a regrouped Helghast army.

"It's the story of David battling Goliath, but this time you are David. That's the big shift in going from Killzone 2 to Killzone 3," Guerrilla MD Hermen Hulst explained.

Fortunately the player has new toys on his side, including a sprightly jetpack, which has a mounted machinegun and is controlled by little bursts of acceleration in midair. The mag described it as "surprisingly lightweight and agile". Enemies will use jetpacks too, and light up "like Roman candles" when they explode.

There's also a new weapon, the Wasp, which fires multiple rockets in quick succession or, with the secondary fire mode, all at once.

Environments include a sprawling ice level where you fight among oilrigs and tankers embedded in glaciers as you attempt to extract a prisoner from a Helghast weapons lab.

The mission, called Frozen Shore, is the fourth in the campaign and includes an on-rails dropship chain-gun turret sequence, which Hulst said was included after fans complained that the dropship intro to Killzone 2 wasn't interactive.

In combat the game is said to be very similar to Killzone 2 - you begin with the standard-issue assault rifle and pistol - but there's a new hand-to-hand melee combat system that you can use when an orange fist icon pops up. Finishing moves include head-stomps and rifle-butt smashes.

As for the 3D mode, it's optional and will require you to wear glasses - the author of the preview noted that he played on a Sony Bravia TV and that it was necessary to sit centrally to enjoy the effect. There's no word on performance implications.

The preview also revealed that Killzone 3 will shine a bit more of a light on the origins and motivations of the gasmask-wearing Helghast, too.

Hulst discussed the origins of the Helghast and parallels to Nazism. Apparently back in the old days the Helghast ruled over Helghan and Vekta, but after they set themselves up as an independent state the people of Earth booted them off Vekta.

"Although the Helghast are physically still human, they consider themselves superior to the human race in terms of society and culture," Hulst said.

"They possess a mentality that's similar to how the Nazis viewed those not part of the Aryan bloodline. Helghast look down on humans as weak, lying and spineless. In Killzone 3, we show that even the Helghast have some humanity left in them."

As for the player's story, Hulst likened it to Inglourious Basterds, based on the small numbers of ISA and the shades of grey we will encounter in the storytelling. "We explore the notion that even honourable soldiers have to make debatable decisions at times for the greater good - or simply for their own survival," he said.

E3 Gameplay Vid, also confirmed release for February 2011, not going head to head with Gears 3 like all the gaming sites think.

I really enjoyed the first Killzone on PS2, and the trailer for this looks amazing. Still never buying a PS3 though

Despite the great reviews, the Killzone 2 demo completely turned me off of the franchise.

I know it's unfair to judge a game by its demo, since demos and full games are typically developed separately.  This is why I hate demos.  I like the concept of "timed trials" (full game with a limited playtime).

I didn't like Killzone on the PS2, it was an overhyped mess, i've briefly played Killzone 2 and it's far far better, still need to play it properly though but that's impossible at the moment as my brother has robbed my only PS3 pad.

Killzone 3 'much more fluid' than KZ2, promises Guerrilla
Environments are a "big departure" from predecessor

Guerrilla Games has promised Killzone fans that the third game in its flagship series will "play much more fluidly" than its predecessor - and reiterated that it has fixed the controller lag seen in KZ2.

In addition, the Amsterdam-based studio has claimed that Killzone 3, which will be playable in 3D throughout, will feature much more diverse environments than fans have seen before.

Speaking to Edge as part of a new focus on some of 2011's biggest FPS titles, KZ3 game director Mathijis de Jonge commented:

"[While] we were still tweaking and checking framerate, I checked this game back-to-back with Killzone 2 and have to say that it plays so much more fluidly. Also, the adjustments we made to lean-and-peek - you can actually slide into cover now, vault over, brutally melee your enemies - it feels more fluid, stutters less. There's fewer points of irritation."

He added: "[The] thing with Killzone 2 was there were some quite technical problems in the controls, actually, and I think we've solved those now.

"There was a lot of lag... by fixing those issues we've lost a bit of that weighty feeling. We've tried to maintain that original experience, but if we'd kept it as slow, we'd run into the danger of losing some people, moving too far away from our competitors."

Discussing the game's locations, Guerrilla boss Herman Hulst added: "A big improvement over Killzone 2 is that we're looking to have pretty much a unique setting for each level...

"We're going from the Helghast interpretation of jungle to very Killzone-esque scrapyards, and at the end we go into space. It's a big departure from Killzone 2, where the first five levels were all urban settings."

Killzone 3 will be released exclusively on PS3 on February 22 in the US and the following day in mainland Europe. It will hit the UK on February 25.
