Microsoft Introduces - "Surface"
« on: June 19, 2012, 01:44:50 AM »

[Via Joystiq]

The Microsoft Big Announcement Speculation Game can finally come to an end, as the company announced a new tablet device called Microsoft Surface this afternoon during a Los Angeles press event. Microsoft calls it the "companion hardware innovation" for Windows 8, an OS that was designed to work on mobile devices specifically.

The Surface includes a kickstand built in to the device, as well as an optional cover that contains a touch-typing, super thin keyboard and a multitouch trackpad. Because the device runs a full version of Windows 8, it presumably will run any games that work on that OS, but we'll have to wait and see how those games play. We can also presume that the Surface will work right alongside any other Smart Glass features to be announced for the Xbox later on. We'll have more on Surface in the future, so stay tuned.

My phone does everything I would use a tablet for, so I've let the tablet craze pass me by.

However, I may be in the market for a new laptop in the near future.  If the "Surface" actually does run full Win 8 OS, and the keyboard peripheral functions like it should, I may consider it.

Option 2 is not so attractive for that price you could get a decent android and build a semi decent gaming pc if you know what you're doing and are willing to shop about. Wait for this - laptop/netbook + touchscreen and tablets will look stupid seriously.

Agreed option 2 is way too expensive. Option 1 looks to be priced to compete with the IPad and at that is pushing the budget also!!

It should be noted that the Surface with Windows 8 PRO is based on x86 architecture - meaning it can run applications designed for full windows operating systems.  It's a more portable, lighter ultrabook basically.  The ARM architecture would be a fair bit more limited with what applications can run on it, and I don't think there's cross compatibility.  That is, an application designed just for one, wouldn't run on the other natively.

Microsoft Surface for Windows RT tablet coming October 26th for $199?

We'll admit to being a little blown away when Microsoft launched the Surface -- it was an impressively polished tablet that we had heard barely a whisper of leading up to the mysterious launch event. But, there was one thing that we were still left wondering: how much would it cost? Now, with Acer getting all in a huff about competition and Microsoft conceding that some OEMs might be a little upset when this thing ships, we might just have an idea for you. According to an inside source, a session was held at Microsoft's recent TechReady15 conference in which all the launch details were laid out. If things go according to the plan detailed then, the Surface for Windows RT tablet will be launching October 26th -- no surprise there -- at a compelling price of $199.

That MSRP, almost certainly lower than Microsoft's own cost, would line it up against the Nexus 7 and even the Kindle Fire. It would put Windows 8 on the map in a big way and give a lot of people a lot of reason to try out an operating system that is going to feel rather different than previous incarnations. The question is: will it drive enough sales of media and apps for Microsoft to recoup its loss? Or, will companies like Acer put up enough of a fight in the months between now and October to keep Microsoft from undercutting its own partners?

Asus Windows 8 Tablets to Start at $600?

Steve Ballmer has already suggested that Microsoft's Surface won't be trying to compete on price, but rumors suggest that Asus's tablets likely won't come cheap either. ZDNet is reporting that the devices will start at $600.

A leaked internal slide from Asus suggests that the cheapest model, the Tegra 3-powered Asus Vivo Tab RT, will retail at $600—plus $200 for a dock. Elsewhere a Vivo Tab with an Intel Atom chip is rumored to start at $800 and the 11.6-inch Asus Taichi, a dual-display Windows 8 laptop-tablet hybrid, pegged at £1,300.

While it's tough to know if those prices will turn out to be accurate, they certainly sound mighty expensive.

Microsoft's 'Surface for Windows RT' tablet launches Oct. 26 for $500/$600

Microsoft's "Surface for Windows RT" tablet (the ARM-powered one, not the one with full Windows 8) will cost $499 for the 32-gig model and $599 for the 64-gig version when the device launches on Friday, October 26. Pre-orders are now open at Microsoft's official store.

Its worth noting the Surface's trademark fancy keyboard covers aren't included in the purchase price -- the Touch Cover carries a $120 premium, and the Type Cover rings up at $130. There is a bundle, however, that packages the 64-gig model and a Touch Cover for $700.

The $700 bundle would be a decent price if it included the full Windows 8 OS.  Not knowing exactly how limited "Windows RT" will be makes me skeptical.
