343 Industries: Halo 4 is a “Reboot” Not a “Reset”

Speaking at Microsoft’s Spring Showcase in San Francisco recently, Josh Holmes, Halo 4’s Creative Director, was keen to settle Halo fan's nerves the world over and push the notion that Halo 4 was a “reboot” and not a “reset.”

“We don’t want to simply imitate what’s been done before,” said Holmes. “We need to find our own voice and give ourselves the freedom to take chances and really push things forward.

“In some ways you can think of Halo 4 as a bit of a reboot,” Holmes continued. “It’s not a reboot in the sense of well-known film franchises in Hollywood like Batman or Star Trek or Bond. The difference there is really that we’re not pressing reset on the story, we’re not resetting the state of the universe. This is a very deliberate continuation of events that have transpired in Halo 1, 2 and 3.”

Halo 4 is as much about taking the series forward as being faithful to the canon, noted Holmes, with 343 keen to put their own stamp on the popular Microsoft franchise, but not at the expense of everything that Bungie has laid down before them.

“One of the things that’s really important for us is to have that connective tissue fictionally, and then maintain consistency with the canon that’s been laid across the universe.”

Halo 4 is scheduled for a holiday 2012 release.

It's neither.  It's a sequel.  I think people just like using words like "reboot" to get fans talking.  Stupid.

New tech, but the same gameplay not a complaint though never realised that they were running below HD before guess the colour palette and art direction helps with that.

So if this is the start of the new trilogy will it all be appearing on 360?

Yup.  It was once rumored to be a launch title for the next gen console, but 343 has confirmed it's being developed for 360.

No Beta Planned For Halo 4 Says 343

If you're hoping that you'll eventually be able to get your hands on Halo 4 through a pre-release multiplayer beta like Halo 3 and Halo: Reach before it, then you'd better think again. 343 Industries has confirmed that there are no plans for a Halo 4 multiplayer beta, as the developer will be "focused on polishing and shipping" the game.

"While we are testing Halo 4 code, gameplay, and systems at significant scale to get excellent data, input, and feedback, we are focused on polishing and shipping our experience for the duration of the year, and splitting resources to manage and build a beta is not on our schedule," reads a post from 343 on the Halo Bulletin site.

So, there you have it then. You'll be playing Halo 4 upon its release and no sooner, sadly.

That's a mistake.  Halo lives by it's multiplayer, and Bungie's dedication to ensuring its quality by beta testing has been a huge credit to their dedication.

How about instead of pushing all of your resources to polishing the game to ship on time, you push back the release date so you can make sure the MP in your new "reboot" game engine isn't broken on day one?

Just a thought.  What do I know?   #)

Oh dear, either over confidence or foolishness, but you're right a big mistake. Now what would the chief say!

Let's see here, for crappy multiplayer changes we have:

X-Ray Vision to look through walls ("Forerunner Vision")
No respawn delay in Team Slayer (can die by your defeated opponent before you even have a chance to recover)
Randomly timed and placed power weapons - adds chance and random factors to a competitive game
Rank based unlocks that actually alter in-combat performance - gives veteran players an advantage over newer players
Players can join in progress games - this not only alters the trueskill matchup, but means you could join a match and have it end seconds later in a loss through no fault of your own.

Not looking forward to any of those changes.

Amusing! And sad. Fingers crossed they pull it off without ruining what makes Halo different.
