Title: Comic Book Thread
Post by: TaraJayne on January 16, 2010, 07:15:48 PM
DC Comics has announced it is working on a weekly series based on Sony Online's upcoming massively multiplayer game DC Universe Online.

DC Comics executive editor Dan DiDio revealed that DC Universe: Legends will be set in the same world as the game.

He told IGN that writers Tony Bedard and Dan Jurgens were already on board the project and he expected Marv Wolfman, who has helped Sony develop the game, to be involved on some level.

DiDio said: "Well, there are a number of things that are going to go on. First, we're going to set up the conceit of the universe, how it works and what the rules are.

"We'll also be trying to work gaming tips and secrets into the body of the book as we move along in the series. You'll see a lot of support material including turnarounds and designs that went into the actual building of the game.

"What I think is the most exciting thing is that, if everything is working as well as we hope once we get down the line, characters that players create actually have an opportunity to work their way from the game into the comics themselves."

DC Universe Online and DC Universe: Legends are due for release sometime this year.

This could be interesting seeing as DC are flying higher than Marvel (IMO) at the moment with Blackest Night being a massive event in the DC world and Brightest Day soon to kick off for a year long stint!

Before people say it too, yes I know I'm a comic book geek.......

Dude!! I spoke to my friend who owns his comic shop and he can do postal for you, HOWEVER (!!!!!) your local comic store is only about 10-15 mins away for you (at a guess).

Ben suggested that there is a comic store call Biff Bang Pow which may still be running so I rang them to find out.

They are based in Video Syncratic which is on Cowley Road and have 2 years back issues on comics, a full run on Marvel and DC (plus a few others I reckon) and plenty of stuff like graphic novels etc.

They also have a reservation service if you wanted too.

Worth a look at perhaps for you?? Hope this helps.

Turns out that when they got rid of all the VHS stuff they had they filled the space with comics and branded their own store for it.

Enjoy and happy to have helped! :)

I love my local comic shop.

I go there about 2 times per month and buy a small stack of comics.  I honestly haven't even read a comic since last Fall (old man Logan), but I plan to catch up on some series this Spring / Summer.  And I like to help keep the shop in business.

If you like DC as well as Marvel you really need to read the Blackest Night Story which is currently going on, very good indeed!

Not yet as it's not finished it's complete run yet, I think there are either 6 or 8 issues and we're on number 5.

If you like DC as well as Marvel you really need to read the Blackest Night Story which is currently going on, very good indeed!

I'm waiting for the trade paperback for Blackest Night.  Crossover events are too difficult for me to keep track of, because I don't subscribe to all of the various affected series.

I did the same for the Sinestro Corps story, which is actually a sort of precursor to Blackest Night.  I just waited until the comics ran their course, ignored spoilers on the internet, and bought the trade paperback a few months later.

For big, longrunning stories like these, it's much easier for me to just wait and buy the story in its entirety than to run around trying to piece it together.  Very frustrating if you end up missing 1 or 2 issues in the middle of the story, then have to wait for reprints before you can read the following issues.

If you're doing that then you need to check out Rage of the Red Lanterns as well then. Another precursor to Blackest Night. That is in graphic novel form already. They're unlikely to do the Blue or Orange Lanterns as they were more one shots than anything else.

Thanks for reminding me.  I completely for about the Red Lanterns.  I'll be sure to read that before Blackest Night.   :)

They've released the Sinestro Corps war in graphic novel form now (it's on my shelf) so anyone like Forbidden Planet or Amazon will have it. Biff Bang Pow will as well and would be the better option if you wanted to get the back issues instead.

Neato....Green Lantern Corps just got even better!!!

I need a little help. I have looked everywhere on the interweb for a particular issue of batman detective comics or "TEC as it's otherwise know but i can't bloody find it anywhere. I am pretty desperate. The issue i am after is from September '96 - "TEC 701. It continues the story from "TEC 700 - Progeny and the Demon, of which i have part one. It's frickin' frustratin' because "TEC 700 is widely available. If any one knows of any good comic shops or websites that stock DC back issues please let me know. Thanks guys  :)

I have a few places for hard-to-finds, but they're all in the US.

Worst case scenario, if you can't find it in the UK, I'll try to find it here and just ship it to you.  As long as you don't mind a US publication (are comics published separately in the UK, or just imported?)

So who won?

It's the proverbial unstoppable force meets immovable object (aka. Juggernaut vs. Blob).

Unless the Marvel Universe has already answered the question (I dont know), there are 3 possible outcomes:

Juggernaut wins or in this case neato wins as the English kuddles is sipping tea and nibbling scones and the neato who's American scoffed a bigmac and a quick expresso shot. Got the jump on kuddles. Sad but true, stereotyping NEVER lies!

Btw.....you would have to also specify which Juggernaut you were talking about about as there has been a)different people who have assumed the role, b)different frames of mind marko was in (he went good for a while to atone) and c)when it's from seeing as the current Juggernaut who is just starting serving with the new Thunderbolts is a damn sight weaker.....he needs air and stuff like that which they have attributed to his interaction/run in with cosmic force.........good old Fred the blob is still the same old Blob......

OK so I know I am bumping this but I hope it's worth it as I want to keep things fresh for people.....

If anyone else is comic minded that around now is a good time to start some new titles/renew some of the old.

Recently we have seen a new fresh look at Wolverine with a canny arc about him going to hell......

His son has fully reprieved the role as Dark Wolverine in his own title as well

Spiderman is set for a new arc.....

Daredevil is in a very good little mini series call Shadowlands (well worth also picking up the one-shots to go with this especially Ghost Rider)
and is also set to renew his own title soon.
However......it is not the man without fear title......

This role is now falling to the Black Panther.........

We're also into the new streams of Avengers, Secret Avengers, Avengers Academy (groan.....IMO avoid) and Thunderbolts.....complete with new team......

DC is continuing Brightest Day in fantastic form with (IMO) the Green arrow title going from strength to strength.
Out of the ashes of Blackest Night a nice little one shot "Untold Tales of Blackest Night" has arrived which although not essential is a good addition if not a little late.
There is also the new Emerald Warriors title for those who are fans of Green Lantern but don't want to have the goody two shos aspect....think GL Black Ops.....

For those wanting something very new and different in the DC world...Action Comics.....It's Lex Luthor in his own (currently) title!!

Teen Titans has only just had a brand new start which ties in with the big one.........

Batman!
After the death of Batman, after the Battle for the Cowl, after the "new" batman and Robin and finally the return of Bruce Wayne......coming soon to a comic shop near you......Batman Inc!
Without trying to spoil too much Bruce Wayne has stepped up to say he funded Batman and is now taking it bigger!!!

Anyhue.....more to follow....

Title: Re: Comic Book Thread
Post by: Kyuubi on November 23, 2010, 04:40:09 PM
OK then kids,

Batman Inc came out last week and I've had chance to read and digest.
For those who love the franchise as it's swiftly becoming is worth a read BUT I would strongly suggest you read it with the Batman: The Return one shot and if your comic book shop has got it reading up on the last Batman & Robin (Issue 16) has a closing which sets it all up.

I have my own thoughts and opinions on it so won't say much here but thought a heads up would go well.

Others of note.....for anyone following Green Lantern after Blackest Night then the newest edition has some interesting revelations and a great closer. (NB I said ages ago to be aware of the Indigo tribe.....)

Brightest Day has a great cover with White Lantern Batman (figure that out if you can!) and is a nice distraction.

For Marvel fans Thunderbolts was great for more than 1 reason........good continuation of the story plus bonus......the reprint of the first issue. All good stuff.

Good week for all.

Cheers

Bit harsh on the white lanterns there me thinks......

Especially as there is only 1 (Deadman) and 12 others brought back from the dead who are both good and bad......

Still an interesting storyline though just not panning out as good as it needed to be to follow blackest night.

The big hook at the end of Batman and Robin 16 (with the press conference) does lead into it well.....but....go for the one shot as well.
Damien being typical him and I don't think that there will be a huge amount of him coming up seeing as he has made his entry into Teen Titans....in typical bravado boots on the table fashion!!!

Reviewing Batgirl and another Batman title this week for my friend so will update more for you. :)

OK so you may have guessed it, I'm letting my geekiness out and taking over this thread......

Later this weekend or next week I'll give you a proper heads up on a couple of titles but things to keep an eye out for.......

New Action comics issue this week (if you like Lex Luthor)
Invincible Iron Man is panning out really well too.....good new issue this week :)

The Incredible Hulks finishes it's most recent 6 issue arc "Dark Son"......not bad.....bit touchy feely though.

2nd issue of the new Uncanny X Force (good stuff!)

Paul Cornell takes over as the writer on Batman and Robin too (Grant Morrison is now on Batman Inc amongst other things)

D Fuzz....if you're reading Tec (Or Batman Detective Comics to the unknowing) 871 out this one and should be a good restart point......

Catch up later with a few more bits too!

Later Taters

Ok so I've taken a look at a few this week....with still some to read.

Shadowlands part 5 is out completing the mini series and is a good one! Worth reading and getting them all especially if you like Daredevil.
Spin off from this is Heroes for Hire.....I didn't like it if honest but thats just my opinion. Issue 1 is out now.

Forgot to add last week was Superior issue 2, a new one from Mark Millar and great if you like his quirky new ideas.

Brightest Day was new out this week but wasn't great, still good for the set though.

Action Comics Annual as well......

There are a few odd little "extra" titles floating around too like Batman Orphanage but not really seen that.

Not the best of comic weks IMO but still some good stuff in there too I reckon.

Been a little while so quick update......

Marvel have launched there .1 issues. This is meant to be a good jump on point for anyone wanted to get into new titles.
So far I have seen Iron Man (not bad but just a giant recap) Wolverine (quite good) and Spiderman.
The last one is great, if you're a Venom fan as it showcases the NEW government controlled symbiote.
Daredevil has been reborn in a new miniseries as well as Silver Surfer (both have looked really good so far) although the hulks have taken a bit of a dip. A 2 issue brief interlude and then a crappy filler issue.
X-men has created a little spin off for Wolverine and Jubilee but to understand it you really need to read X-Men: Curse of the mutants, not bad if you like vampires.
S.H.I.E.L.D has just finished their 6 part first volume (worth a peek but give it a month and I would go for picking up all 6 in one go if comic book stores are packing them together).

Brightest Day has got all good with the White Lantern starting to show its card and in other parts we are entering the prelude to the War of the Lanterns which promises to be great.
Batman is opening it's franchises with some success depending on your personal preferences and writers/artists too.
The Flash is really beginning to gear up, especially as DC's big toy for the year is "Flashpoint" in which it is hinting at a lot of what if's such as What if the spaceship didn't crash? Personally I think this is all linked to the Reverse Flash but this is yet to see.

Aspen (comic book company) are starting to really come into their own as well. New title called Charismagic for the softer hearted is on the way soon (zero issue recently) and the next issue of their stunning Lady Mechanika is out very soon.
Top Cow are still continuing the Artifacts and have finished the first chapters so to speak and it still looks gorgeous.
Millarworld has finished Nemesis (great little 4 parter but could have ended better) and Superior is still going strong.

Whirlwind tour I know but if people have questions just ask and I'll happily help :)

No.  Nononononono.  Pass.

Anyone know of any other frank miller stuff worth getting? (other than sin city)  :)

Batman: Year One is pretty sweet.

He also did the 300 series, but I think the movie was actually better than the books.

Now Grant Morrison is a guy that shits gold.  I just added (http://cdn-6.nflximg.com/en_US/boxshots/large/70145756.jpg) to my Netflix queue.  Looking forward to watching it at some point this decade.   :D

He is doing some stunning work atm for DC, had a really good run on Batman recently.
Geoff Johns is the same and doing a tonne of stuff including Green Lantern.

On Marvel my current favourite has to be Matt Fraction who is writing on Iron Man and Fear Itself.

DC Comics Resets All 52 Titles

Starting this summer, the publisher will re-number its entire DC Universe of titles, revamping characters such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and others from its 76-year history for a more modern and diverse 21st century.

The first book to be released under this new era: Justice League No. 1, out Aug. 31. The series by writer Geoff Johns and artist Jim Lee reunites the famous lineup of Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman and Aquaman.

Johns promises a focus on the interpersonal relationships within DC's trademark superteam. "What's the human aspect behind all these costumes? That's what I wanted to explore," he says.

MORE: What's behind DC Comics' big change? (http://www.usatoday.com/life/comics/2011-06-01-dc-comics-why-the-change_n.htm)

In September, an additional 51 first issues will make their debut, introducing stories that are grounded in each character's specific legend but also reflect today's real-world themes and events. Lee spearheaded the costumes' redesign to make characters more identifiable and accessible to comic fans new and old.

"We really want to inject new life in our characters and line," says Dan DiDio, co-publisher of DC with Lee. "This was a chance to start, not at the beginning, but at a point where our characters are younger and the stories are being told for today's audience."

In an even more important move in the competitive comics industry, DC is making all of the re-numbered titles available digitally via apps and a DC website the same day they arrive in comic shops. It marks the first time that a major comics publisher has done so with its popular superhero titles.

The company has come in second to Marvel every year since 2002 in market share, according to Diamond Comic Distributors (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/Diamond+Comic+Distributors).

While the two companies are making millions off movie adaptations of their comic books, print sales for both have dropped in recent years, as new technology gives readers many more options.

"We're allowing people who have never bought a comic book in their lives to download them on portable media devices and take a look," Lee says.

"Having the ability to give people access to these comics with one button click means we're going to get a lot of new readers."

This is going to be a massively mixed thing.

There is now real uncertainty about what this will do to the titles.

For example there is no guarantee the current lines and back work is being continued.
Also you won't have confirmation of writers on products too!

I'm looking forward to some things but really hoping they leave Batman alone.
A little worried the Green Lantern Reboot could play hell on things too :S

and all because of the reverse flash too.......

It sounds a good thing, giving a new generation a chance to learn all the lore. I reckon the older comic fans will be all up in arms though.

Like the Doctor Who and Star Trek thing i suppose, rebooting a franchise will always have it's older fanbase stook in rose tinted nostalgia, closed eyes and open mouths shouting about the good ol' days.

Monetary wise, buy the last issues of all the series, the last of anything is always expensive. Look at the last 2 Saturn games to be released (expensive)

Now for some Awesomeness!!!!!

Computer animator Michael Habjan has created a series of short clips depicting a battle between The Man of Steel (modeled after Christopher Reeve of course) vs. The Hulk.  So far, Habjan has completed three very impressive installments of his epic battle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6dj7YCEKhw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbizTBYs-rQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDBNB2hk5t0

Not looking too good for the Man of Steel.  But that’s usually when Superman is at his best.  Superman and the Hulk have tussled a couple of times in comics in spite of being in opposite universes.  The first time was in 1996′s DC vs. Marvel mini-series.  Fans voted on the outcome and (correctly) voted Superman the winner.  However, that same mini-series depicted Wolvering beating Lobo which is obviously ridiculous (am I right?).  So, Superman’s victory seems less that definitive.

Then the pair faced off again in 1999′s Incredible Hulk vs. Superman.  I haven’t read this cross-over issue although I hear it’s quite good.  (spoiler for a comic that’s over a decade old)   I’ve also heard the ending is more or less a draw.

So, Mr. Habjan, it falls to you to do what Hollywood and comics have thus far failed to do.  I am of course speaking of the necessity to depict Superman’s definitive victory of the green giant of the Marvel universe.  I hope you’re up to the task in future installments.

Ain't that the truth.  My description of every epic Superman fight:

Bad guy causes destruction.
Superman say, "Hey, dude.  Stop it."
Bad guy beats the crap out of Superman.
Bad guy beats more crap out of Superman.
Superman goes limp.
Bad guy beats more crap out of Superman.
Superman opens his eyes and remembers that he's F***ING SUPERMAN!
Superman wins.

Every Marvel Comic Now Comes with a Digital Copy

Marvel announced today that every one of its $4 superhero comics is now going to come with a code to download the digital version to the Marvel app, which is available on every major platform.

The digital code in a physical book model first started with The Avenging Spider-Man last year, and it was popular enough right off the bat that what was a one-issue experiment was immediately extended to the whole series. Fans have been complaining for a long time about the relative insanity of paying $4 per comic book, and digital's been threatening to shutter brick and mortar comic shops as well. This is a nice way to appease both sets.

Heirs of Superman artist can't reclaim their copyright, judge rules
Man of Steel doesn't meet termination requirements, remains a DC Comics property.

It took two years of court wrangling, but DC Comics ultimately found the legal kryptonite to shut down an attempt by the heirs of a Superman co-creator to recapture rights to the heroic character. Because of an agreement they signed in 1992, the family of artist Joe Shuster won't be able to claim the "Man of Steel" as their own.

The Superman battle is one of the most closely watched battles over copyright "termination," a process through which artists can take back the rights to their old works. Such termination notices are allowed by Congress as part of the 1976 Copyright Act, and Shuster's heirs hoped the law would allow them to take back the character that he and writer Jerry Siegel created in 1938.

Siegel, Shuster, and their heirs still made plenty of money off the comic book hero from Krypton—about $4 million since 1975, according to the judge's order [PDF] released yesterday.

Copyright termination essentially allows artists, musicians, and other creators to "undo" any deal they agreed to that transfers their copyrights to another person or company... as long as they wait 35 years first. The idea is that struggling artists who create a blockbuster work may have signed away rights at a time when they didn't have the leverage to negotiate a good deal. Through the termination clause, Congress gave such artists, or their heirs, the right to re-capture ownership of their most popular works.

The termination battles are heating up now, because 2013 is the year when the first 'round' of works from 1978 are up for grabs.

The victory for DC comics clears the company from legal burdens when it launches a new Superman movie, Man of Steel, onto the big screen next year.

The judge's reasoning in this case: copyright termination can only apply to pre-1978 deals. But after co-creator Joe Shuster passed away in 1992, his brother Frank and sister Jean Peavy signed a deal with DC Comics that would cover Shuster's debts and pay Jean Peavy $25,000 a year for life (Shuster had no wife or kids, so his siblings are his legal heirs.)

That 1992 deal ultimately earned Peavy more than $600,000, and DC Comics' lawyers argued it supersedes any earlier deal. The judge ultimately agreed: because of its late date,  it can't be overturned using the copyright termination rules.

How much should an artist earn for creating an icon?

The creators of the famous comic hero were hardly impoverished. As the order details, even back in the 1940s Shuster and Siegel stood to make about $2 million. The co-creators filed their first lawsuit against DC Comics in 1947, but settled the following year, acknowledging that DC owned "all rights in Superman."

In 1975, they signed an agreement with DC that provided "lump sums of $75,000 each, lifetime annual payments of $80,000 each per year, survivor payments to their heirs, and insurance coverage, as well as 'credits' on new Superman works," according to the order. All told, the Siegels and Shusters were paid about $4 million under the 1975 agreement, not including medical benefits, according to the judge's calculations (which adjusts all the figures for inflation, converting them to today's dollars).

After Shuster died in 1992, his sister Jean Peavy struck a deal with DC to get $25,000 per year. She also asked DC for additional money each year, noting that she wasn't going to try to reclaim the copyright in court like Siegel's heirs had done: "I want you to know that I intend to continue to honor our pension agreement," wrote Peavy. "I would, however, appreciate a generous bonus for this year as you had done many times in the past."

Between 1993 and 2001, DC paid Peavy bonuses between $10,000 and $25,000 on eight different occasions, all the while making its position clear that it had no legal obligation to do so. In 2003, Peavy's son Mark Warren Peary (born Peavy) moved to terminate the copyright anyhow.

In court papers (PDF), DC Comics lawyers say their client took care of Jean Peavy and continue to pay her every year as promised. However, in 2003, her son Mark Warren Peary worked with a lawyer and "intervened to disrupt the family’s longtime contract with DC," wrote lawyers representing DC Comics.

To bolster their case, the Shusters pointed to a 2008 decision in which the daughter of the writer of the novel Lassie Come Home was able to terminate a copyright grant. The judge found there was "no ambiguity" in the 1992 agreement, and noted that unlike the Lassie Come Home situation, the Superman heirs were aware of the copyright termination rights, and were in fact able to obtain hundreds of thousands of dollars in benefits from their deal.

The Shusters' attorney, Marc Toberoff, declined to comment today on the order. In court papers, he argued the Shusters were a textbook case of what Congress intended when it allowed for copyright termination. He said the purpose of the process was to "enhance the authors' position," and give creators some leverage that would prevent "exploitation" by publishers.

The original 1938 agreement signed by Siegel and Shuster, without the aid of a lawyer, "would later be held to have granted Superman to DC for $130," wrote Toberoff. It wasn't until 1975—under pressure from a national cartoonists' group—that Warner Bros. (parent company of DC Comics) agreed to pay Siegel and Shuster "a modest pension." The company was worried about negative publicity, he wrote.

The party attempting to recapture the copyright in this case is Pacific Pictures Corporation, a joint venture owned by Toberoff and the Shuster heirs. Toberoff also represents the heirs of some other well-known artists engaged in battles over copyright terminations. His clients include the children of Jack Kirby, who created some of Marvel Comics' most famous characters; and the children of Ray Charles, who are seeking to reclaim copyright on 51 of the artist's songs.

Interesting stuff.

The Shuster family got a good deal from DC, but I can't blame them for trying to get a little more while the Superman movie hype-machine is in full force.

At least Shuster and his family have continuously benefited in some form from his creation.  The same can't be said for Bill Finger (co-creator of Batman and Joker).  I think DC did eventually make things right with the Finger family after his death, but it still makes me sad knowing Bill died poor and nameless while Bob Kane died rich and famous.
