Avalanche: You 'shouldn't be surprised' if Just Cause 3 is announced

Just like the all-grappling hero of the Just Cause franchise, developer Avalanche Studios is exercising an unusual amount of freedom. Like the freedom to start talking about Just Cause 3 one week after the release of Just Cause 2. Studio head Christofer Sundberg told Develop  that we "shouldn't be surprised" to hear another sequel announced. "We are absolutely interested in working with the Just Cause IP again," Sundberg said.

Sundberg is confident that Avalanche would be behind the continued development of the franchise, as well. "The studio lives and breathes the Just Cause franchise, and handing that over to another developer would spoil it," he said. "No one has the attachment to this IP as we do."

He told Develop that after a series of layoffs, the company is being cautious about growth. "We now have a very reasonable staff size in terms of requirements, and we now have a core team who can produce quality and give each project the care it deserves." Well, that core team and a new casual-focused studio. But that's it.

Just Cause studio prepared for Xbox 720 arrival
Avalanche predicts that new hardware will be disc-free

The studio behind the much-loved Just Cause games has told CVG that it is "prepared" for any sudden announcement of a successor to the Xbox 360.

Microsoft job listings spotted last night pointed to the platform holder working on new hardware - long dubbed by fans as 'Xbox 720'. The firm is advertising for an engineer to "play a key role in the development and verification of the Xbox and future platforms".

Christofer Sundberg, founder of Swedish studio Avalanche, told CVG that his firm is working on a number of new, non-Just Cause secret projects.

One of these titles is the licensed action game Sundberg revealed to CVG last year - thought to be based on the Mad Max franchise.

But if Microsoft announced a new static console tomorrow, would it throw Avalanche's development plan into disarray? No Siree Bob.

When we asked Sundberg if Avalanche was ready for new Microsoft hardware, he said:

"Yeah, absolutely. It's actually quite an interesting subject for us - because when we worked on Just Cause 1, the Xbox 360 came out [at around the same time]. We had to do the 360 version in six months. It's an interesting place again right now, where the projects we're working on today might be coming out on [Microsoft's] next technology."

Sundberg told CVG that Avalanche has a "central engine team" who believe Microsoft is "working on something" - but had seen "nothing confirmed in terms of specs and so on". Despite being in "very close contact" with MS, he reiterated that the platform holder had "confirmed nothing".

He added: "All we can do is guess and try to be as accurate as possible."

Sundberg's confidence in Avalanche's ability to deal with new hardware from Microsoft or Sony is boosted by the architecture of current generation technology. He commented: "Every good games technology these days is so scalable that once a new platform comes out, we feel prepared to deal with it."

Sundberg said that "everyone is speculating" over the timing and technological make-up of both Sony and Microsoft's next console, but opined that "everyone agrees" on one thing: - There will be no optical disc compatibility.

As well as working on his own games, Sundberg will be keeping an eye out for the rumoured Just Cause movie, which is reportedly on its way to the big screen.

Just Cause 3: 'Most Realistic Open World Vehicles Ever', Current & Next-Gen Teased

Avalanche Studios has revealed more about its plans for its next open world game via a new job listing for a vehicle designer.

Published on Sep 18, 2012

Just Cause 3 will "deliver stunning vehicles in terms of handling, physics simulation and destruction," and will represent "something no open world to date has yet achieved," according to a new job listing for developer Avalanche Studios.

Just Cause 3 is all-but-confirmed as the game in question, with the ad describing it as Avalanche's "next open world game" which will provide "an over-the-top vehicle experience"; Avalanche and JC publisher Square Enix have already confirmed they're working together again.

Much like the original Just Cause, which launched simultaneously across Xbox and Xbox 360, Just Cause 3 could be headed to current and next-gen platforms too.

After speaking specifically about the open world game, the ad states that "Avalanche Studios is developing for both current and next gen platforms," although whether this refers simply to Avalanche's slate of three AAA games is unclear.

"As a Vehicle Designer at Avalanche Studios, your work will be focused around what you like to do most: design and tune many different vehicles which form the backbone of our next open world game - that’s a variety of vehicles which extend far beyond traditional cars," reads the ad.

"Our plan is to deliver stunning vehicles in terms of handling, physics simulation and destruction rendition. Something no open world to date has yet achieved."

The successful candidate will also be responsible for "ensuring we’re constantly aligned to the promise of delivering an over-the-top vehicle experience. To this extent, you’re also expected to drive an on-going competitive analysis to assess the quality and scope of the player experience against that of the competition. Notice that Avalanche Studios is developing for both current and next gen platforms."

Are you excited about the prospect of a next-gen open world game? How should it differ from GTA 5, Sleeping Dogs or Saints Row: The Third?

I remember JC2 being a complete blast to play. It was definitely a leap above the original. Hearing that Avalanche is designing for both this gen and next does make for some caution though. I believe that's what happened with the first Just Cause and it turned out to be somewhat buggy on the Xbox360.

If they keep that feeling of open-ness and the ability to practically destroy everything in the world,  the grappling/parachute mechanic, along with some new added features, Just Cause 3 has my vote of interest.
