Prey 2
« on: September 09, 2009, 08:11:05 AM »
Prey 2 IP Picked Up By Zenimax

The ever watchful internet blog, superannuation, spotted a few trademark applications recently that revealed that the Prey IP - originally owned by Apogee/3D Realms - had been sold to Zenimax - the business arm of Bethesda.

The site links to 5 - count it, 5 - separate trademark applications and transfers, and lists a number of items including; magazines, books, graphics novels, clothing and apparel, an ongoing sci fi TV program, and of course, video games.

The final application shows the trademark moving from Apogee - via the Radar Group to Bethesda's business arm, Zenimax.

The good news is that the franchise has been picked out of limbo. It does open up a ton of questions though, like who will develop it? And more intriguingly, how much did they pay? Will the money fund Apogee/3D Realms' development of Duke Nuke Em Forever... or is that too much to ask?

I quite liked Prey. It had some nice touches in it. Multi-player was o.k too.

I liked the first game, shame it was a bit short and when you died you had to shoot ghosts to get health!

Prey was one of the first games I got. It was the cheapest game around at the time.  ;D

It wasn't bad, I never tried the multiplayer.

Bethesda signs Human Head's Prey 2

Bethesda has signed Prey 2, a sequel developed by Human Head.

The game's due out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 next year. The developer is using id Software's id tech engine to build the game.

Prey 2 isn't exactly a surprise: Radar Groups' Scott Miller was banging on about it in 2008, claiming the sequel would up the portal ante and show Valve's Portal series a thing or two.

Then, in late 2009, Bethesda parent ZeniMax filed a trademark to protect Prey 2.

"We are thrilled to be working with Bethesda on Prey 2," said project lead Chris Rhinehart. "Prey 2 will provide gamers the opportunity to explore a new facet of the Prey universe, one that offers fast-paced action in an open, alien world. We're excited to show gamers the title we have been working on and hope they will be as excited by this title as we are."

Prey 1 followed Native American hero Tommy, who called on ancestral powers to quash an alien menace. Eurogamer review Kristan Reed awarded Prey 7/10.

He wrote: "Perhaps inevitably - although maybe not intentionally - Prey struggles to break free of its late '90s genesis, and essentially what we're left with is a game whose good intentions simply don't translate into wide-eyed entertainment. With uninspiring and basic deathmatch multiplayer options failing to rescue the package, it looks like it's going to be another long hot summer for FPS devotees."

Prey 2 doesn't use id Tech 5

Prey 2 does use id Tech but doesn't use id Tech 5.

Bethesda mouthpiece Pete Hines told IGN that the game was started too long ago to use id Software's latest and greatest engine - the thing what powers Rage.

"This game has been in development for quite a while and id Tech 5 is still in progress (until Rage ships, and probably even after). So it really wasn't an option," he explained.

Bethesda was announced as the publisher of Prey 2 yesterday. The press release misleadingly informed that Prey 2 was "being built on the cutting edge id Tech engine from id Software".

Like Brink, Prey 2 uses an older id Tech engine (presumably id Tech 4). Brink developer Splash Damage has heavily modified the engine, though.

Prey 1 developer Human Head will make Prey 2, which has a 2012 date with PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Prey 2: First image features... Sam Fisher?!
Magazine cover reveals redesigned protagonist

The first Prey 2 image has emerged via the cover of Swedish games mag Game Reactor... and is it just us, or does the protagonist look a bit different?

If this artwork is anything to go by then developer Human Head's switched the original game's American Indian, comic book stylings for a hero who looks a whole lot more 'Tom Clancy', but of course we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves - we haven't seen the game yet.

Regardless, the internet's naturally burst into rage mode at the suggestion of a visual change, and one of the writers of the Game Reactor article logged onto the NeoGAF forum to assure fans: "Have a little faith here, I highly doubt you'll be disappointed in this game".

Prey 2 was officially announced for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC yesterday, with new publisher Bethesda at the helm.

Prey 2 is once again being developed by Wisconsin-based Human Head Studios, which is built up of former Raven Software employees.
