Battlefield 3 should keep you going for a while - the upcoming shooter has years' worth of unlocks, developer DICE has claimed.

It's the "deepest" shooter in the developer's history, and has ten times the number of unlocks than Battlefield: Bad Company 2 had.

These are spread over weapons, weapons attachments, gadgets and a "huge" unlock tree for vehicles.

"There should always be something left to achieve in Battlefield 3," persistence designers Valerian Noghin and Fredrik Thylander said on the Battlefield blog.

There are also medals, ribbons and service stars, which display your skill, commitment and teamplay prowess, to gather.

"You will be rewarded handsomely in Battlefield 3 for exemplary skill, such as capturing X amount of bases in one round," the designers said.

"Excellent teamplayers who keep the team’s vehicles in mint condition and revive fallen comrades will not go unnoticed either. These type of skill-driven rewards are typically handed out in the form of ribbons, and good players can often get more than one ribbon in a single round."

The Battlefield blog details the way the upgrades and unlocks work in the sure to be a hit shooter, and reveals the Service Stars feature, designed to challenge the hardcore.

"The ultimate bragging right would be for a player to be awarded the rank of Colonel with 100 Service Stars attached, and to have 100 stars in all weapons, kits, and vehicles. Getting there will be a massive task – consider that a challenge! :)"

No split-screen co-op for Battlefield 3

There won't be split-screen co-op in Battlefield 3, developer DICE has confirmed.

"No, you have to be online to do it [co-op]," DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson told Gaming Lives at Gamescom 2011.

Co-op levels will be separate to the main Battlefield 3 campaign. At launch, said Troedsson, there will be six co-op levels to play. But random factors will freshen the co-op levels to add replay value.

Troedsson reckoned co-op levels take around 20 to 45 minutes each to finish - depending on level, your ability and the difficulty you're attempting.

When a co-op level is finished you'll be able to compare times and scores with friends. Points will be awarded for displays of teamwork. And it's score that Troedsson and team want to emphasize in Battlefield 3.

Unlockable weapons from co-op as well. As awesome as the new map and trailer look, now Im worried about the console MP. How are they gonna pull that off?

Co-op looks sweet as beans though. :)

It's just Assault from BC2, they've put it in the game instead of leaving it and adding it as DLC laters... for 800msp.

They should be commended!!

lol yeah at least its in the box :)

Seriously though I sense a dlc coming with more co-op missions, it is EA after all.

Well excited to have this game in hand, but at the same time I worry about that 12 v 12 max on consoles. In saying that, BC2 full matches do a great job tbh, it is DICE and I have faith. But there's a niggle of nervousness for it. Silly that really seeing as its just a game, but it's like letting a friend to decorate your house while your away. Will it suck? will you like it? will you say that you like it even when you don't, to not admit to yourself you made a mistake!!<<<Please don't let me down BF3<<<crying now !!lol!  :P don't make me buy call of ''cough'' mw3! NEVER!!!

I'm pysched, i have faith in DICE. Even though MoH was a lagfest it was still solidly built, like a Bad Company lite. Obviously they were on auto-pilot, when they did the MP. This will be DICE at full force, there's a buzz about both DICE and EA, they know it's good, they know it's gonna be everything MW wishes it was .... MW will still sell more though.

BF3 will be Jedi
You mind clouded by darkness, modern warfare that darkness.
