The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct

The Walking Dead FPS Coming to Xbox 360

Enjoying Telltale's The Walking Dead adventure series on Xbox Live Arcade? Good. That won't be the only The Walking Dead game in town, as Activision has enlisted Ghostbusters developer Terminal Reality to create a first-person shooter based upon Robert Kirkman's popular zombie series, IGN reports.

While Telltale's game uses the comic books as its inspiration however, Activision and Terminal Reality's shooter takes the AMC TV series as its source material instead. Casting you in the roles of crossbow wielding Daryl Dixon and his racist brother Merle, you'll face hordes of undead in a story that promises to be a "haunting, unforgiving quest to make their way to the supposed safety of Atlanta."

Apparently, the game will blend stealth and action, as you strive to evade as many zombies as you shoot. There's resource management suppsedly at work in the game too, and you'll meet a variety of non-playable characters who will either help or hinder your journey. Acti's The Walking Dead FPS is set for launch in 2013.

The Walking Dead FPS
Activision's crusade for brains continues

Having just fallen in love with another kind of Walking Dead game, we weren't too sure what to think when Activision announced an entirely different spin-off. The giant publisher doesn't have a spotless reputation when it comes to top-notch licensed games, and the development team haven't proved themselves either, after previously working on the less-than-stellar Ghostbusters.

Activision isn't showing the game running yet - we suspect it's still arguing with the actors about getting their eyebrows just right - but it is talking about it, and first impressions suggest that it could be just as interesting as Telltale's take. Where that studio's adventures focus on human drama, with tough moral decisions to keep you on your toes, Terminal Reality's version is a much more traditional bit of survival horror. At a time when the rest of the industry seems to be turning its back on the genre, it's refreshing to see a lowly spin-off embrace it. The other key difference to Telltale's efforts is the tone and plot, which ties in more directly with the US TV series.

The game itself is mainly first-person action, but with some strategic choice stuff behind the scenes. Following the story of the Baxter brothers as they try to make their way across the US to Atlanta, you'll have to make smart choices about resource management if you want to see this sticky story through right to the end. Survivors you'll meet along the way can be recruited to help out, but that also means a bunch of extra mouths to feed. The resource stuff mainly seems to be handled in menus between missions, but should add a useful bit of context to the game.

You'll need to scavenge for supplies throughout the linear story if you want to keep your buddies alive, but extra exploration always means extra risks. Staying true to the source material, zombies in The Walking Dead can only be killed by destroying or removing the head. Catch them off-guard and this shouldn't be tricky - a swift and nasty melee attack will squelch up their think-stuff without drawing much attention. In contrast to the gun-heavy antics of other zombie games, we're told that firearms in The Walking Dead should only be used as a last resort: the noise will attract plenty of hungry foes. A single zombie bite is fatal, so don't expect to plough through dead flesh like Rambo.

While the plot is rigid, levels are said to be much more open. Landing a headshot on the straggler that's alone on the street might seem like a great idea in theory, but you won't know how much attention you'll grab. The engine can render shedloads of different zombies at once, so don't come crying to us when you're surrounded by the hordes and stranded on a roof.

To avoid deploying the same character models over and over again, The Walking Dead will generate new zombies by randomly combining a mix of different body pieces. There's also an adaptive animation system that will apparently ensure that zombies all move differently, but we'll need to see it in action to get a feel for how impressive this technology really is.

We can't say whether or not the final game will be something that does the obvious imagination at work justice, but The Walking Dead certainly has potential. We'll have to wait and see if the final game can deliver on it when it releases next year.

Terminal Reality insists the graphics will be better next year, but that still leaves me with 2 questions.

1)  How much "better" can they get in less than 12 months?  I'm sure a few months of polish will make some great improvements, but can it compete with any other AAA title releasing in 2013?

2)  Why did they even bother releasing a gameplay trailer when the gameplay wasn't ready to be shown to the public?  At the very least, why didn't they splash a huge "GRAPHICS DO NOT REPRESENT FINISHED PRODUCT" across the bottom of the screen?

Personally, I'm not a graphics snob.  I've played some pretty sh*t games that looked beautiful, and awesome games that looked like sh*t.  If a game is great, it's great regardless of how it looks.  But with that said, this trailer has done nothing to convince me the game will be good.  I remain semi-hopeful.

Agree with all the points made.

And having seen what's happened with TellTale's game, I wonder if their thought is to be heavy on story and not so much on gameplay and visuals...although, if that were the case, you'd think they choose to highlight that with their trailers. So far, not a good showing.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct Dated For March

Activision has confirmed a launch date for The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, Terminal Reality's first-person shooter based upon the hit AMC TV series. It'll be coming in late March.

Starring crossbow-toting badass Daryl Dixon as the lead protagonist, travelling with his brother Merle, played by Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker respectively, Survival Instinct is a prequel story to the TV show that sees you managing your resources as you fight walkers and strive to survive the zombie apocalypse.

Some rather shonky gameplay footage emerged for The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct recently, which according to developer Terminal Reality is "old footage".

"It caught us off guard. It was a fan trailer cut together from another interview I had done," Terminal Reality's Glenn Gamble told Eurogamer. "The game looks incredible. It was old footage. It's what we had at the time. We've made big strides since then."

See if you think it's improved in the five new screenshots below. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is out on March 26th, 2013 in North America and March 29th, 2013 in Europe.

Something strange is going on with this game, other than the suspect quality.  While searching for the video below, I discovered the official Facebook page for the game has been taken down.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh7L0Ghpt14" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh7L0Ghpt14</a>

Also, Terminal Reality's website seems to be having some issues.  A lot of "404 Not Found" dead links.  Hopefully they're just upgrading/updating their web presence.  But I fear some bad news might be brewing.   :-\

There's a max of about 8 seconds of gameplay in that "Gameplay" trailer.... :P

Speaking of, the fact that it's going on sale for $49.99 on release is interesting...
