PSN Down Worlwide
« on: February 28, 2010, 11:36:42 PM »
Today, a few PSN users reported issues with "trophies" unlocking and overall sign-in errors.

Hours laters, "a few" became "thousands" as PSN is now unavailable to non-'SLIM' PS3 users worldwide.  Exact causes (and solutions) are unclear at this time, which is fueling angry internet masses.

It took me a few attempts to sign in yesterday, I was only playing a demo so didn't experience any Trophy issues.

UPDATE:

I've been reading through various articles and forums.  Apparently the problem is being caused by a CMOS internal hardware error in early model PS3's (aka "Fat" / "Phat").

The internal clocks are trying to display the date as February 29th 2010, but February 29th does not exist this year.  Because of the nature of the problem, many people that don't even use PSN (or the internet) are still experiencing issues.

The Real Problem - how is Sony going to fix this?

Some users are reporting that they have managed to fix this themselves by opening their PS3's, removing the backup battery from the motherboard, and allowing the internal clock to reset (offline).  This is of course a temporary fix since signing into the PSN (if possible) will update the clock and cause the problem all over again.  This method will also void any warranty the console has, and risks damaging internal components that shouldn't be messed with by novice users (ie.  most users).

It may be possible to somehow revamp the CMOS internal clock through a firmware update.  If so, Sony would need to make these updates available through postal mail since not all PS3 users have internet access, and the problem is being experienced by users regardless of internet access.  If a manual fix is required, Sony may need to offer a recall-esque repair/replacement program similar to Microsoft's RRoD extended warranty service.

I watched a couple of videos on how to disassemble the PS3, most were the launch models.  My fat that had the isssue was one the newest of the 40GB models released and it was totally different inside.  There was only 7 screws holding the top half on, plus one for the top cover.  My battery had a plug that was right behing the blue ray drive and my top half had no ribbon cable connecting it to the lower half like in videos.  It literally took 5 minuntes to do this.  I was curious to see how dusty it was in my PS3, and to my surprise, it was nearly spotless!

My 80GB is also the newest 80GB realease, and is oneof two FAT SKU's to have been reported to not have the issue along with the new slim models.

Both of mine have been out of warranty for awhile, so it was no big deal to me.  However, I was able to peel the warranty sticker off without any issue and install it back to where it appears to have never been off.

The date on the affected PS3 was set back to 12/31/1999 upon turning the unit on.  I do not have it sign on online automatically, nor do I set the time from the internet.  After doing the battery 'trick', it booted up to a date screen of 1/1/2009, which I thought was odd.  I wondered if it got that date from the previous firmware update, and that the firmware update apparently does not 'flash' the bios, much the same way a computer BIOS update does.  I'm guessing the next leap year this thing thinks it is having, it will reset to the 2009 date perhaps?

I still don't see how waiting until March 2nd corrected the issue because the user always had the ability to set the correct date.

Yep, it says the same thing.  Have you synced your trophies from the XMB?  When you view the trophies on your XMB do all your different trophy/games show up?

I found out something interesting yesterday about the trophies.  I have two PS3s, one I only have GT5P on, no trophies in this game. The other I play everything on (got a good deal on the one, so WTH :) ).  I did a sync trophy on the GT5P console and it brought all my trophies and games they go with to the new console.  My next feat will be to see if I can sign in to PSN from both consoles at the same time, just to see if I can crash the entire network like I did yesterday....

BTW, I just clicked on to my profile, is that what you are comparing too?  I kinda like the new PSN look.  I noticed my trophy page looks different than yours, like I'm really cool or something...  ;D

I just did a compare between you and I on the trophy page and it shows my trophies, and it shows '-' for you, but perhaps that is because of the difference in games.  However, it show you have trophy level 2 and '23' trophies.

PSN doesn't update as quickly as live does, I've noticed.

This is what concerns me.  I 'synced' my trophies from my PS3's XMB before and after yesterday's crash.  My profile shows that I've earned trophies, but the specific trophy history is nowhere to be seen on my profile.  Not even the trophies I earned BEFORE the crash ever happened.

I think yesterday's crash really f***ed up my account.   >:(

hmmm, you're not one of those 'glitchers' claiming false fame are you???  ;D

I seldom sync my trophies, but I did yesterday during the whole fiasco, bringing the trophies from PSN to my 80GB PS3 that had none to begin with.  I checked out my MSG PS3 after the battery thingy and it was fine too.

I wonder if it'd help to log out of your PSN account online and then back in?
