I'd call it a lazy Hollywood exec's attempt at getting some attention for a lackluster film. How much lack of creativity would Microsoft be accused of if all they ever did to introduce a new console is slap a 720 after their existing logo? Horrible, really...

Microsoft's Next Console Will Be 6x Faster Than Xbox 360

Was going to drop this in another existing topic, but I figure this one's got actual traction to start its own disussion.

Via [IGN], [Joystiq] is reporting that the next Xbox console will make use of technology deriving "from 2011's AMD 6000 series, similar to the Radeon HD 6670, which supports DirectX11, 1080p HD, multi-display output and 3D...."

"Mass production of its GPU will begin at the end of 2012, IGN says, with a full-console launch scheduled in October or November 2013."

Quote
Following initial reports from tech blogs Fudzilla and SemiAccurate, our sources have confirmed that mass production of the system's GPU will indeed begin by the end of 2012 but will not, however, be based on AMD's 7000 series Southern Islands GPU. Instead, the processor will be derived from the 6000 series, which was introduced last year. More specifically, it will be akin to the Radeon HD 6670, which offers support for DirectX11, multidisplay output, 3D and 1080p HD output. The chip currently has a market price of upwards of $79.99.

In real terms, the Xbox 720's raw graphics processing power is expected to be six times that of the Xbox 360 and will yield 20-percent greater performance than Nintendo's forthcoming console, the Wii U.

Developers are likely to receive development kits based on the system's final configuration in August. Projected pricing for the console was not provided.

Who's to say if this is too soon or not, but like anything else, it'll all come down price point and to the software / titles that join the system at launch.

It's sounds about right timeline wise, I wonder what they will do with the disc storage format, will they adapt blu ray?. Has it been confirmed as the ''720'' though?

Blu-ray would make more sense purely from a storage stand point but because MS plumped for HD-DVD which failed miserably I don't think they'll lose face and side with Sony on blu-ray, maybe they'll create an exclusive alternative or just stick with dvd, either way, can't wait for some official info on the new xbox.   :)

Since blu ray has become an industry standard for physical media, I would be surprised if they didn't adapt blu ray.

Microsoft will not call the console "720".  I guarantee that.

Xbox 720 'will support Blu-ray, might not play used games' - report
Sources also claim it'll ship with Kinect 2 and possibly a smaller controller

New claims regarding Xbox 360's successor have hit the net.

According to Kotaku's industry sources, the next console from Microsoft will play Blu-ray discs, catching up with PS3 on the physical media front.

The report also claims the console may not play used games. The anti-used game system could in theory link a copy of a game to a specific Xbox Live account.

It further suggests that the new Xbox will ship with a second generation Kinect sensor featuring an on-board processor that allows it to better detect users' motions, and that Microsoft is considering launching its new hardware with a smaller controller than Xbox 360's.

Adopting Blu_Ray would be great but doesn't that mean that Microsoft would have to pay Sony licencing fees? Dunno if they'd go for that.
