Title: Final Fantasy XIII
Post by: GamerMan316 on August 21, 2009, 06:45:09 AM

Square Enix has finally clarified that Final Fantasy XIII will launch simultaneously on PS3 and 360 in the West.

"We don't have the actual month down yet, but in Japan it's scheduled for a winter release, and in Europe and North American territories it's spring 2010," producer Yoshinori Kitase told VG247 at gamescom.

"For Europe and North American, the PS3 and 360 versions are going to be released simultaneously."

Kitase added that European localisation used to take a year, but should now be "considerably shorter". The European launch of FFXIII, therefore, will be "as close to the North American release as possible".

Square Enix began development on the Western, Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII in April. However, the PS3 code is complete, and - as Kitase mentioned - goes on sale in Japan this winter.

This aroused suspicion that Western PS3 fans are being made to wait for FFXIII simply because of a simultaneous multi-platform-release deal.

Square-Enix is aiming for Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox 360 to ship on three discs.
Square-Enix's Yoshinori Kitase said: "This isn't the final count yet, but we're aiming for about three discs."

With Final Fantasy XIII originally slated as a PlayStation3 exclusive before being confirmed for 360 as well, there was some speculation over how many discs the 360 version would consist of, owing to the fact that DVDs don't hold as much data as PlayStation3's Blu-Ray.

To put this into perspective, Lost Odyssey ships with four discs while some of Square-Enix's titles have also made the stretch to four discs (Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX). In this day and age, does disc changing bother you or don't you see what the fuss is about?

Not really, as long as the "disc change" does not somehow ruin the game.  I remember my PS1 (or PS2) froze when I switched the discs for ChronoCross.  Fortunately, the game saved at the final scene, so I only had to replay about 30 seconds of gameplay to try again.

However, it would be nice if they could somehow put a "Master" key on the first disc, allowing you to install all of the remaining discs but not have to swap them.  It's doubtful, but it would be a nice way to compensate for the lack of Blu-Ray.

Square targets six million sales of FFXIII

Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada reckons the company can sell more than six million copies of Final Fantasy XIII worldwide.

Speaking to Reuters Japan in comments picked up by Kotaku, Wada also said he wants Dragon Quest IX to break the five-million barrier in Japan, which he thinks it will do this year.

Final Fantasy XIII is due out for PS3 in Japan on 17th December, and will be released for PS3 and Xbox 360 simultaneously in the West in spring 2010.

Leveling up is so 1990s - and with Final Fantasy XIII striving to be as modern as RPGs come, Lightning and co are to ditch the old leveling mechanic in favor of a new system, revealed in Japanese magazines earlier this week. Here's our detailed explanation about just what this means for Square's upcoming blockbuster.

You heard us right - Final Fantasy XIII will have no levels and no experience points at all. Shounen Jump revealed its replacement this week, the Crystalium System.

Rather than EXP, players will earn CP - Crystal Points - for vanquishing enemies in battle. Each character earns their own unique CP, which can then be spent on upgrading their battle skills.

It's all very similar to Final Fantasy X and XII, with a circular board showing you all the various skills in the game. Your path through the board will be determined by the skills you buy - deeper, more powerful skills are unlocked by buying lower, related skills. Buying 'Fire' early on will pave the way to grab 'Firaga' later, for example.

In FF13 however even character growth will be tied to your CP. If you want more HP, you'll have to spend CP to get it. All the traditional FF parameters - apart from MP, which is absent in FF13 completely - will be upgradable this way.

The Crystalium System also links nicely into the Optima System previously detailed. The Optima System is all about different 'roles' for different characters in battle. A character with an 'Attacker' Optima is likely to concentrate on physically bombarding the enemy, while a Defender will cast healing spells.

The skill unlock board where you spend CP is laid out in such a way to encourage players to level up each character in a specific optima role - therefore leading to the more traditional FF roles of White Mage, Black Mage, Warrior and so on - or at least something equating to them.

For hardcore RPG fans this shouldn't be too much of a change - this kind of feature has cropped up in RPGs all over including Final Fantasy X and XII several times before. For casual players who only pick up the occasional RPG and have jumped on the FF hype train this could end up being a little disorienting, which could prove to be a problem when review time rolls around.

In terms of the in-game consequences, systems like this traditionally allow players much more freedom. While in FFX Lulu was naturally designed to be a Black Mage, careful spending in that game's Sphere Grid allowed her to break out of her specialty and dish out some impressive damage in other areas.

Because of this you can fully expect to see a naturally physical fighter like Snow be turned into a serviceable spell caster, and visa versa. However, unlike FF12 characters are locked to their weapons - you'll never see Snow brandish a sword or Lightning use a staff. This helps to limit your options in some way, at least.

It's believed that summons are locked to characters, too - so chances are players will find that whatever they do with the CP system they will have to obey some of the game's basic character guidelines thanks to Summon and Weapon restriction.

Players will be able to build characters into multiple roles for the Optima System, though. The Optima Change events in battle are actually there for changing the 'stance' of party members from one Optima stance to another - and there'd be no point in changing if each character was only good at once thing.

Final Fantasy has been moving in the direction of more flexible characters for a long time, with the most notable examples being Final Fantasy VIII, X and XII. Now XIII joins that group, offering players a lot more choice over what combat roles their characters take than many other RPGs offer with their set classes.

While doing away with leveling up is potentially a bit alien to many FF and RPG fans, it goes a long way to push Final Fantasy XIII towards its goal of being a more Western-friendly, Action-oriented RPG alongside its super fast-paced battle gameplay.

I can't stand RPGs like FF they're just so repetitive. I prefer the Fable type approach tbh. I played FFVII on the PSOne and although it looked fantastic, it bored the socks off me. Safe to say I won't be going anywhere near the latest release. That's my turn over, now I'll stand helpless while someone else has a turn ;)

I like RPGs, I would easily put the Knights of the Old Republic games in my top 5 all time games, It's just finding the time to play them.
I have Oblivion and Mass Effect waiting to be finished, Justcan't get the time to play them, Which is why I have not brought Fable 2 or Fallout 3 how ever much I wish to play them. I struggle to complete a 15 hour gamenever mind a 50 hour plus game.  I don't think I will be interested in FF13, I lost interest in these games a while ago.

hmm hopefully the level system will be more like FF12 where you generally headed in a certain direction and became what you were supposed to be, not like FF10 where you could get lost and gimp your character. FF10 had more endgame depth though in the skill system where you could replace earlier +1 Attacks with +4 Attacks, increasing your charter further.

I doubt FF13 will be anything like the earlier 'boring' (as bus put it) FF's, it'll be more like the quicker paced FF12 which made you fight in realtime.

If FF13 is half of what 12 is, it'll be the best RPG on the 360.

Final Fantasy XIII character progression system explained

Though the effeminate hairstyles have managed to stay in tact as the Final Fantasy franchise has evolved, one element seems to change from game to game: The character progression system. From Materia to Guardian Forces to the Sphere Grid and plain ol' leveling up, the series has introduced some novel forms of strengthening your characters. It sounds like Final Fantasy XIII will be no different -- according to the latest issue of Shonen Jump, the RPG introduces a new progression system called "Crystalium."

Andriasang laid out the gist of how the system operates -- instead of gaining experience from battles, players earn "Crystal Points," which they can then spend on new abilities and stat boosts which are arranged on a circular chart. As you progress down one of the chart's specialization trees, you unlock stronger abilities; Fire leads to Fira, and so on. Sounds a lot like the aforementioned Sphere Grid -- but we suppose we'll have to wait until we get our hands on the game before we can make a more insightful assessment.

I'm going to buy FFXIII.

I like some turn-based RPGs.  ChronoCross is still in my Top 10 all-time games.  I play it at least once every 2 years.  I cannot say the same for FFVII.

Square-Enix is lining up an announcement regarding Final Fantasy XIII on November 13th.
The news came thanks to FinalFantasyXIII.net, which realised Square-Enix's "A Henchmen Inventor Tent Unto" tease was an anagram that meant "Announcement Nov Thirteenth."

So the only thing left to do now is speculate exactly what the announcement will be. Anyone have a gut feeling on this one?

Square has revealed two new character classes for next year's MMO venture Final Fantasy XIV; Gladiators and Pugilists.

The Gladiators are "expert swordsmen, known for their battle prowess with blades of all designs," according to the official site. "They favour combat at close range, where they masterfully execute a deadly array of hacks and slashes."
Pugilists are more about close-quarters, hand-to-hand combat. "Some have become so adept at this manoeuvring that that they are able to negate the reach advantages of even the longest blade or spear," it says, showing off range of knuckle duster-like weapons. They're thugs, basically

Final Fantasy XIII launches March 9, 2010 on 360 & PS3

Final Fantasy XIII will launch in North America and Europe on March 9, 2010, just a few months after it debuts in Japan and nearly four years after it was originally announced. Since that time, Square Enix's flagship role-playing game has become a multiplatform project -- the English version will debut on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 simultaneously -- as well as the first part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series. It's also no longer the highest-numbered Final Fantasy game.

"We know that our fans have been eagerly awaiting the next installation of the franchise -- FINAL FANTASY XIII will exceed all expectations," said John Yamamoto, president, chief executive officer and official title shouter of Square Enix, Inc. "Coming simultaneously to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for the first time, FINAL FANTASY XIII will be available to all players who are looking for the most immersive gaming experience of 2010."

And you'll have to look -- we hear Q1 2010 is already swamped with immersive gaming experiences. That's not a complaint!

Final Fantasy games are not short. So while big titles from other developers might be clocking in at somewhere between 7 and 9 hours, don't expect a brief Final Fantasy XIII experience. Expect a long haul.

In a recent interview, FFXIII director Motomu Toriyama noted, "For XIII, the size of the entire game is considerable. Just running through the main story takes experienced players over 50 hours. For the first time, I think it's possible to play through in full in about 60 hours or so."

Meaty! Players have been waiting three years for this game, and it sounds like they've got a big game ahead of them to experience.

After playing Dragon Age, any game is going to feel short to me.   ;)

I'm currently 60+ hours into it, and I still have at least 3 Main Quests (a little less than half the main story) and dozens of Side Quests remaining.

The main story is 50 to 60 hours long, what about all the side quests, mini games and item hunting? The FF's have gotten longer and longer, I did 7 in 80 hours getting everything and 10 in about 100 hours, 12 took me 145hours, took me 8 hours (with breaks) to kill the biggest boss and 2 hours to kill the hardest boss.

Final Fantasy XIII PS3 and 360 Differences Announced

Square Enix has just confirmed a couple of differences between the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 release of Final Fantasy XIII. In an interview in Famitsu they state that the video and audio is compressed on the Xbox 360 DVDs while the Playstation 3 version will be uncompressed and appear on a dual-layer blu-ray disc. The 360 version will obviously be released on multiple DVDs. This means that the uncompressed game will be 25GB minimum.

Pretty obvious if you ask me  :)

the 360 version will be on dual layer DVD discs, so i'm guessing the game will be on 4 discs and will probably run at 720p, the PS3 version will be on 1 blu-ray at 1080p & no doubt all the Sony fanboys will be loving the microscopic victory right there  :)

I don't mind multiple discs.

I dont' mind compressed audio.

If the 360 version is only 720p and PS3 is 1080p, I would be tempted to buy it on PS3.  But I still prefer Achievements over Trophies, so the 360 will always win for me.

Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack site launches with samples from game's four-disc score

The official Japanese site for Final Fantasy XIII's soundtrack has gone live, offering the ability to listen to the first ten tracks from the four-disc mega-album. Andriasang reports that the site will be updated with all of the discs' contents over time, along with notes on the tracks by composer Masashi Hamauzu, who worked with Nobuo Uematsu on the score for Final Fantasy X.

You can listen to the tracks by heading to the site (http://www.square-enix.co.jp/music/sem/page/fabula/ff13/) and clicking on the "track list" tab at the bottom of the page. The album releases in Japan on January 27 in both standard and limited "first cut" editions. If Square announces a domestic release, it'll be music to our ears.

FFXIII ships 1.8m for Japan launch

Square Enix has dug deep and found another few hundred thousand copies of Final Fantasy XIII for the game's launch in Japan earlier today.

A healthy 1.8 million copies of the PS3 game have been trucked off to shops around the region - a figure that includes console bundled copies.

Prior to this revision, Square Enix had said that 1.3 million copies of the highly anticipated PS3 RPG would be available during the game's first seven days on sale.

Final PS2 instalment Final Fantasy XII stockpiled two million copies high for launch day alone, although the console had a comparably larger installed base.

Still, the wait for Final Fantasy XIII is finally over - at least for PS3 owners in Japan. The Xbox 360 version is reserved exclusively for the West.

Thankfully, anyone adept at Japanese may import without a care, although we'd urge caution to anyone new to the language as the game relies heavily on text and spoken dialogue.

The US and Europe will receive Final Fantasy XIII on 9th March, simultaneously on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Square Enix cut a game's worth of content from Final Fantasy XIII

It turns out there once were many more labyrinthine paths and dungeons in Final Fantasy XIII, but they got cut. An interview (in Japanese) over at FF-Reunion with art director Isamu Kamikokuryou ("No you!" to his friends) has him saying that the team removed enough extra locations from the title to make up a whole other game entirely.

Sections cut include a secret base for Snow's hero squad, a character's home that included a park, and even a zoo inside one of the game's amusement park areas. This is all more impressive when you consider that Square Enix is expecting to need three DVDs to hold everything that's still in the Xbox 360 version of the game. But FFXIII completists, don't worry too much -- we're sure some of that content will appear sometime during the game's 10-year cycle.

Wild Arms 3 has the greatest VGM of all time. It appears numerous times in Top 'xx' VGM lists.

This is the lyrical opener, there's also a whistled song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-hYVZQLddM) (which i love) used when your riding your horse between towns. Plus many other songs from simple music played whilst you explore towns, to battle and cinematic songs!

Square-Enix has issued a fresh statement saying that it's not planning DLC for Final Fantasy XIII.
Square-Enix has flip-flopped on its DLC stance more times than we can remember and has reverted back to its 'no DLC' stance that it originally started out with.

"Regarding the DLC content, we feel that the final product is 100% enjoyable," says producer Yoshinori Kitase. "It's the complete package. So we're not planning any DLC at this time."

The statement continues: "In regard to the rumored cut content, we feel it was taken out of context. There are a lot of ideas that are brought to the table and then the team takes the best ideas out of those, and the final product is polished that way."

I play the games once without the guide, then once with the guide so i can go back through the game and collect everything.

tbh, it's amazing how much stuff you miss in that first playthrough. Out of the 16 summons in FF7 on my first playthrough i finished with 6, similar with 8, 10 and 12.

Digital Foundry: 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII 'adequate but a touch disappointing'

So, you read our review (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/05/review-final-fantasy-xiii/) of Final Fantasy XIII and are prepared to pick it up next week, but you're not sure which version to buy? If you're basing your decision on graphical fidelity, the A/V experts from Eurogamer's Digital Foundry suggest (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-final-fantasy-xiii-face-off) you go with the PS3 version of the game -- as seen in their quartet of video comparisons, the 360 version suffered a bit of resolution reduction during its trip between platforms.

No, the difference in quality isn't groundbreaking or anything. We just wanted you to know all the factors before making a decision. Both versions have their strengths and weaknesses -- for instance, the 360 version requires you to change the disc two times, but the PS3 version of the game is unplayable once every 1,461 days.

Well after 4 days with it, im slighty disapointed,
FFXIII Has no way of going off the beaten path at all. Atleast in a game like Fable or Mass Effect I can do other things.
Just a straight on rails game, no freedom to even do side missions, the combat system is really bland also.
Why didnt they bother tossing in side quests? Why a 100% focus on the main story? Not one of the other FF games did this, they all had other optional side quests to mess with to keep the games replay value up.

those are western RPG's ... they're more like adventure games, this is a highly stat based and technical game, no matter how the magazines word how they've streamlined the game, i'm finding untold depth to the system, the game is also very difficult. Almost every boss has taken me 2-5 goes to finish.

Failed, Maibs, Luke and a few others will be give you better advice to be fair mate as they play these games a lot more than me, i'm not a big RPG fan but will still play this at some point, if it's as good as Lost Odyssey, no doubt it's better, then i'll be happy.

I've got at least a dozen games I either haven't finished or want to play through again so I don't really want to get in to anything else at this stage anyway, I just like the smell of the freshly opened Xbox game and have been missing my fix  ;)

NPD: Final Fantasy XIII sold almost twice as many copies on PS3

Let's go back a couple of years, to E3 2008. At the Microsoft Press Conference, the company drops the news that Square Enix has agreed to release Final Fantasy XIII  simultaneously on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. There is much cheering and/or weeping and gnashing of teeth, depending on which side of the console wars you are on.

Two years later, in April of 2010: Final Fantasy XIII is released on both consoles simultaneously. And the most recent NPD report says that while the Xbox 360 version sold a respectable 493,000 copies, the PS3 version sold 828,000 copies -- almost twice as many.

We'll let you guys sort that one out for yourselves. Do remember where the consoles were at in both places -- back in 2008, the Xbox 360 had an early lead on big software (LittleBigPlanet was Sony's biggest game of the show), and these days, PS3 sales are doing much better. But we will say that, according to NPD analyst Anita Frazier, this is Final Fantasy's biggest launch ever (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/19/final-fantasy-xiii-fastest-selling-game-in-franchise-square-eni/), and that XIII has topped the first-month sales of XII by 48%. That's a lot of l'Cie.

interesting article, especially if it was 6 months ago. Gives the PS fanboys something, even very small they seem to need it.

Once the PS3 has the lead over the 360 worldwide we won't hear the end of it.

It doesn't already? I'm kinda surprised and impressed all at the same time.

The 360 has around a 4 million lead on the PS3 but was also released a year earlier, the lead was massive at one stage but Sony have eaten away at it, won't be long before they overtake and then all the fanboys will be happy.   :)

Apparently ps3 did a similar thing with promo shots of mafia 2 recently. The ps3 version doesn't have  rendered grass, the ground just looks flat and horrible, and it lacks several other graphical touches that the 360 version has. However promo pics of the ps3 version do not reflect this. So i guess it 1 - 1 at the moment.

Karen ... all about it.

"Caring all about it." (sarcasm)  It's one of many great sassy-stings I've learn from gay friends.

In hindsight, it probably doesn't translate well in text sans the verbal sassy accent.

360 Final Fantasy XIII flops in Japan

I doubt Japan ever expected to play Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox 360, but last week a cut-price, content-boosted version of the game on Microsoft's machine was released.

So, how did it do?

Abysmally.

Final Fantasy XIII showed up 39th in the regional software chart. Sales figures aren't noted for games past position 20, but if the game occupying 20th sold 22,579 units then FFXIII, which is 19 places lower, can be estimated to have a much lower tally.

When Final Fantasy XIII appeared on PS3 in Japan, in December 2009, launch-week sales were 1.5 million.

The only explanation for poor Xbox 360 sales we have is that Japan reads Eurogamer's Digital Foundry blog, which pointed out, emphatically, that the Xbox 360 version of FFXIII was the vastly inferior of the two (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-final-fantasy-xiii-endgame-article).

It certainly can't be because no one cares about Final Fantasy XIII. Can it?

In reality, it's probably a combination of factors. The Xbox 360 doesn't quite have an installed base of 1.5 million in Japan, while the PS3 marches close to six million. And not only is the 360 port of FFXIII a poor one, it's also a year late in Japan, where Final Fantasy fans had been lead to believe buying a PS3 was the only way they'd play the 13th instalment.

Final Fantasy XIII was released in March this year.

Cant believe it was March...I've still got this in its wrapping from where I bought it at launch!

In the US, we call that "playing with a stacked deck".  (http://360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_forum1/Smileys/default/rolleyes.gif)
