APB: First gameplay footage
See Crackdown dev's promising MMO in motion

Crackdown dev Realtime Worlds, has released the first proper gameplay footage of its 'GTA MMO', All-Points Bulletin (APB).

In case you missed it so far, APB is basically an online game of cops and robbers, where player Old Bill get dynamically dispatched to apprehend player crooks whenever they commit a crime.

APB is an action MMOG title being developed by Crackdown developers, Realtime Worlds. APB is set in the modern day and features cops-and-robbers style gameplay. Players will be able to create their own avatar using an extremely robust character creation system being developed for the game, as well as choose from two different factions, the Enforcers or the Criminals. The city or cities in which the game takes place are contested 24 hours a day as players shoot it out to vie for control of the area.

Hey everyone,

With the recent activity inside and outside the community website it's important that I remind you that you are bound a Non Disclosure agreement.

Breaching the NDA not only has a detrimental affect on the continued development of APB but you also risk being removed from the BETA and no longer joining in on all the fun.

The NDA covers everything from submitting screenshots, discussing gameplay or announcing the size of a patch. If you have any doubts please read through your agreement or contact customer service on support@apb.com

Remember, we all want to have fun and make APB the best it can be. You can discuss anything you want, here on the forums.

Thanks for reading.

Cool, they've split the testers into 2 groups atm (Old testers - Heavy Hitters/New testers - Furious Fighters)
If anyone get accepted they will be put in FF who seem to be getting a raw deal atm.

They are only play-testing during certain times (2 hours a week atm for FF :( ) but hopefuly they are gonna increase it in the next couple of weeks.

Also the NDA is realllllly strict, you can get banned for even telling people your are in the beta lol, hope no-one from RTW stumbles on this thread.

I'm kind of excited because this will be the first hardcore closed beta during which I haven't had a night shift job (and thus had to miss most of the scheduled play tests).

Yanks should be able to still play/use code and play on EU server.
theres quite a few americans playing on the EU server.

the NA beta test probably wont start running for another month or two, they have only just started testing the NA server with people from the EU server.

99% sure it will work, we have americans currently in the EU beta so theres no reason why they wouldnt add 2 more.

Remeber tho the tests are only 2-4 hours per week and they mostly thursday 8-10pm GMT and sundays 8-10 GMT, not sure what time that is in US. hopefuly they will increase over the next few weeks

EU ATB was been going since october and the US ATB only started a few weeks ago so it will be awhile before they send out US invites.

Is there anyway to run the beta software and create a profile / character outside of scheduled playtimes?

Whenever I try to run the game, the updater loads.  But when I click the PLAY button I get an error message saying [filename?].exe not found.

Is this because I'm trying to run the game outside of schedule playtimes, or is there something wrong?  I've tried google, but the only thing I found was a 3rd-party German forum that did not translate to English.

Title: Re: APB: Reloaded

Thats sounds like a client/install problem, during downtime you can launch the game and get to the log in screen, when u enter details then it will pop-up a msg about playtimes etc.

I would try a fresh install and fresh update, and try logging in , if you get to log-on screen then its fine and your all set for the next playtest, if not let me know

Is your installation directory folder in the region of 8GB? As this is a problem that can occur when the patch server is down or not connecting to the APB Launcher correctly.

        If you go into APBGame/Binaries

You can find the user executable, to make sure it is present in the folder. Let us know whether this is the case.

Thanks to Larathus for this solution

Do you Think you have Corupt files?
Delete the folowing files from your \APBBeta-EU folder:
        Client0.6.2.514861.xml.zip
        ClientFiles.xml
        Launcher0.1.10.514846.xml.zip
        LauncherFiles.xml
        Patches.xml

and then start the launcher, doing so forces the launcer to scan your folder for checksum errors (takes a few minutes, pressing repair only scans for missing files but does not verify them)

Thanks, Maibs.

I do think a bad install may be to blame.  I orginally installed the file linked in my "welcome" email.  Last night I uninstalled and tried to download the installer direct from the APB beta site, but the file was corrupt.  Perhaps they were updating the backend while I was trying to troubleshoot my own issues (bad timing).

I'll try again this weekend.  If I continue having problems, I'll post some screenshots of what I'm experiencing.  If you or Shakes happen to still have a copy of the installer file you used, feel free to fileshare it to me.   ;)

I think you found me (Neato).  I got some popup messages from "Maibs".  I tried to respond, but I could not figure it out.

I also keep getting a popup message saying I have "1 Unread Message", but I have no idea how to read it.

I'm enjoying the concept of this game, but I have to be honest and say the controls are insanely clunky, especially in vehicles.  I'm playing as an Enforcer, but I probably killed more innocent people than the criminals did while trying to drive a car.   :-\

Driving appears to be a big problem for everyone, if you check out the forums, that and hit detection seems to be the main gripe.
Driving is fine for me, after playing for so long ive learned to drive with the delay and its not so hard anymore (still kill way to many pedestrians tho)

Give me a shout next weekend if your about, maybe group up for some missions.

I also keep getting a popup message saying I have "1 Unread Message", but I have no idea how to read it.

if its an e-mail you need to read at a terminal near agents or in social district, 1 Unread Message usually mean that someone is talking in district chat but the chat box is closed, usually opens on its own or press home.

APB Lead Designer EJ Moreland spoke about the infrequently discussed console version of Realtime Worlds' upcoming cops-n-robbers MMO All Points Bulletin in a recent interview with the folks at Develop.

In the interview, EJ noted that the console version of APB would be different and not a straight PC-to-console port as those sorts of games don't tend to "work as well as it did on the original platform." The choice to make the console version of APB a more "console centric" version as opposed to simply doing a port job means that a console version of APB may still be a ways out, as the team has not even begun production on the console version yet.

EJ does reassure us that the game will not be "radically different" though, so those of you who are looking forward to playing APB on consoles, don't fret, the game will still be about "content creation, online celebrity, and deep match-making", it'll just a bit more console friendly!

You can read part one of the full interview over at Develop right now for additional information.

Console APB still in question, Realtime Worlds explains

There was a time when Realtime Words' APB was planned for consoles, but as it fights for survival on PC retail and virtual shelves, it appears it still hasn't found the right publishing partner for a console version. Realtime Worlds Creative Director Dave Jones tells Eurogamer  that a console version won't happen until it finds a publishing partner and works out several other logistics, including pricing and "running dedicated servers for console" MMOs.

Jones mentions the company is going to remain "heavily focused on building upon" the PC version of APB. He also notes that a console version would require a redesign and that the studio's "immediate concern" is getting "new content out, updating the game and talking about what's coming next."

I wouldn't mind playing this on PC as long as they fix their controller support.

It is a fun game, and very ballsy.  I just cannot play a game while sitting at a desk for long periods of time.  I sit at a desk all day at work.  I want to sit on my sofa when I'm home.   :D

Yikes!

Given my experience with the beta, I would have agreed.  But I just chalked all of the bugs and repitition to the fact it was a beta.  I honestly expected critics to love the full release.  The whole concept just oozes 'cool'.

Now I'm curious to play the retail version just to see if they really didn't make that many improvements beyond the beta.

Kind of missed the last weeks of beta and start of launch due to time constraints but have to agree, think the reviews are a little harsh and agree the game had a lot of potential but with the confusing payment options and unfixed bugs and glitches the game has rapidly gone of the radar.

Being so long in production and amount of money invested in the game, i expected (and hoped) they would pull it out the bag.

Its a shame.

All Points Bulletin: Realtime Worlds Enters Into "Administration"

Realtime Worlds, developers of All Points Bulletin, has entered "into administration" which has been confirmed by Gamasutra. Entering into administration is indicative of the creditors seizing assets. The matter has not yet been adjudicated in court so it appears it is one step ahead of all-out court ordered bankruptcy.

"A staffer for the PR house representing UK-based corporate recovery group Begbies Traynor said in a phone call that the firm is handling Realtime Worlds' administration, confirming reports that originally appeared on UK-based Develop Tuesday morning. An official statement is forthcoming, the rep said.
As administrator, Begbies Traynor will decide whether Realtime Worlds can continue on as a company in light of financial difficulties, or more likely if the studio can recover more money by selling off assets or liquidating entirely."

At this point, Gamasutra is reporting that calls to Realtime execs have not been returned.

That is pretty much how the industry works. That is why you don't see big studios make games that are radically different, like APB. AAA titles just cost too much to afford being creative and risky. That said, EA is pumping millions upon millions into that new Star Wars MMO (it is going to end up being one of the most expensive games ever produced), and there are many people (myself included) who think it is going to bomb spectacularly. This will mean a couple important things for the industry:

If these things don't have an effect on the game industry as a whole they will at least have that impact on the MMO scene, which is probably the most stagnant genre out there right now.

APB has 130,000 registered players

Dundee developer Realtime Worlds has revealed a raft of APB statistics as administrators seek a buyer for the embattled studio.

APB has 130,000 registered players, apparently, and the average player plays for four hours a day.

Paying players average $28 per month, "a combination of game time and user to user marketplace trading".

Administrator Paul Dounis said: "These are healthy numbers and reflect positively on APB as a ongoing concern.

"They prove this is a very sticky and enjoyable game, which is shown by the average player daily playtime and an ARPPU (Average Revenue per Paying User) that is highest of any game out there."

Realtime has suffered a torrid time in recent weeks.

It went into administration following lackluster sales of APB, and is now up for sale.

Last week sources revealed that staff were told whether they had lost their job via a PA system announcement, although Eurogamer has since been contacted by an ex-Realtime staff member to refute this claim.

Reports suggest a new studio may arise from the ashes of the developer - one that will ensure social gaming project MyWorld meets its projected spring 2011 launch.

Administrators claimed to have restructured the studio to ensure the game's future, promising a "pipeline" of future updates and game improvements.

Epic Games may buy APB - report

The APB plot thickened this morning with a new report that suggested Epic Games may buy the luckless online game.

The Gears of War maker was "one of the companies in the frame", the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11333582) heard from a source.

Epic's non-denial stirred the pot further.

"Mark [Rein - Epic VP] absolutely loves APB, and everyone here loved what they saw," said spokesperson Dana Cowley.

"We've got our hands full of Gears of War 3, Bulletstorm and the recently announced Project Sword. If any talks like that are going on, then they would be confidential."

Epic Games supplied the Unreal Engine 3 technology that APB was built upon. But the friendship didn't stop there: Epic's Mark Rein even demoed APB to a PAX audience last year.

APB creator and Realtime Worlds founder Dave Jones is believed to have relocated to the US. Coincidence?

A Dundee development source told Eurogamer last night: "Dave Jones and Epic is quite the talking point in town. He and Mr Rein are good chums and have worked together on many levels for years and years and years. And he's not going to raise much money/staff here in the near future."

Should the news hold water, the question will be why Epic has waited this long to make its move.

Yesterday we heard (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-09-16-apb-plug-to-be-pulled) that administrators will pull the plug on APB servers within 24 hours.

I'm pretty sure Mark Rein was even in some of the hype videos showing off the game.

I've been playing APB: Reloaded, and I have to say that for a free game I kind of love it. The competitive aspects of it kind of suck, but it is tons of fun just dressing up my dude and then running people over in a van.

It reminds me of that time I drove home intoxicated from a comic book convention.
