Dance Central

Harmonix' Dance Central Could Come to PS3, But Not Wii

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeJB-b4R-Q8" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeJB-b4R-Q8</a>

One of the of the most important games of E3, Dance Central, may not be an Xbox 360 exclusive.

I ran into some of the Harmonix folks last week during a rooftop party for Kinect in downtown Los Angeles and among the group was studio co-founder Alex Rigopulos.

As you can imagine, Rigopulos is a big fan of his Kinect-powered dancing game, Dance Central. As am I. I told Rigopulos that I thought the title could become as culturally relevant as Guitar Hero and Rock Band become. He did not disagree.

Could you see people playing this in a bar, I asked?

Rigopulos said he could, that he hopes his game kicks off a revolution of not just dancing, but choreographed dancing. Dance fights! Could there be dance fights? He didn't take the bait.

But, he did talk about the possibility of the motion-sensing, dance-teaching game coming to other platforms.

Harmonix does not strike me as the sort of studio that makes exclusive titles. Why would they be? It cuts down on their audience and their profits.

Rigopulos said that the team is looking into the possibility of bringing Dance Central to the Playstation 3 with the help of Move. We think it's possible, he said.

The Wii? Not a chance, he said. It's motion tracking doesn't collect enough data and track things in a way that could translate into the sort of dance game that Harmonix would want to make.

Sorry Wii owners, you're going to have to sit this revolution out.

Some booth babes from other games playing dance central at E3. At the center is the booth babe from Rift: Planes of Telara, a kind of neat looking MMORPG for the PC. But anyway, enjoy the awkwardly dancing hot chicks.

It's like Jazzercise, but with unnecessary headware.

Ouch! He went for the high five with the hot rift chick and was left hanging. He was redeemed by the End of Nations chicks though, they showed him some love.

See, if Kinnect was programmed by me it would have sensed his being burned, took a picture of it as it happened, and left it up on the screen until the next game took place.

I have to say, seeing it in action it definitely does look like silly fun. But do we need Kinnect for this? The dance moves don't look any more like real dancing than the sillyness that is DDR.

I tried the demo of this that's featured on the kinect adventures disc, along with joyride and your shape - fitness evolved demo's. I danced to 'Poison' and i must admit it was bloody great fun, if one of your limbs is out of position it shows up red on the screen so you can correct yourself and the 'freestyle' sections are brilliant, meaning i could bust my own particular brand of 'move'. Think i will pick it up in the new year, but i must say after just one dance i was knackered so it's definitely a great workout. Joyride was rubbish, and i haven't tried 'your shape' yet, but i have heard great things about it and as myself and fizz want to get fit we will probably buy that in the new year too, just in time to lose those xmas pounds. mmmmm.... turkey
