Title: The Walking Dead (TV)
Post by: ApocalysePony on October 19, 2010, 10:32:10 AM
The Walking Dead is an upcoming American television series created for television by Frank Darabont and based upon the comic book series of the same name created by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore.
It will premiere on the AMC network on October 31, 2010 with a 90-minute premiere episode, during the network's "Fearfest."

The Walking Dead tells the story of the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse and follows a small group of survivors traveling across the United States  in search of a new home away from the hordes of zombies. The group is led by Rick Grimes, who was a police officer in the old world. As their situation grows more and more grim, the group's desperation to survive pushes them to do almost anything to stay alive.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yg46DWI_fCE

I'm super excited for this.  It will no doubt be my favorite new series in TV.
A lot has already been discussed in the general Movies/TV topic, so I'll just cary over Craig's important quotes.

Is This Zombie TV Show Tipping Its Hat To Dead Rising?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBiI6YRfWIY

At Comic-Con, a trailer was shown for the upcoming TV adaptation of the brilliant comic series The Walking Dead. Nearly every scene shown is lifted directly from the comics. Except for one, though it still looks familiar.

You'll see it come at around 4:10 into the clip. It's from early in the comic series, when hero Rick travels to Atlanta looking for his wife and son. In the comic, you see a tank in the background on one page, but Rick never clambers up on top of it running from the undead.

He does in this trailer. That's new for the show. And the imagery looks a lot like the most iconic shot from 2006's Dead Rising, from the game's conclusion as Frank finds himself...on top of a tank surrounded the by undead. It's not only the same scenario, it's the same vehicle, an M1 Abrams.

It's nice to see that for a game that took so many cues from other works of zombie fiction, Dead Rising seems to have had its own influence on the genre.

Can't wait either, I got chills down my spine watching that trailer. The guy in the lead looks exactly like Andrew Lincoln, a British actor who is most famous for his role in the British comedy Teachers from a few years back. Does anyone know if it's actually him, cos if it isn't then it must be his twin!

Fair enough mate, I thought Teachers was awful, poorly written and badly acted (quality soundtracks though), it created a trend for more poorly written and badly acted Channel 4 TV shows too, see Shameless.

Lincoln is great in his brief appearance in cult classic Human Traffic, the scene at the bar with John Simm is quality, great film too that is still, 11 years on, the best thing that Danny Dyer has done.

Apparently a "leak" of the pilot episode of The Walking Dead can be found online.  I'm told the audio is good, but the video quality is a little low.

Personallly, I'm going to wait for the actual release.  I've too excited for this show to let a bad bootleg ruin it for me.

Doesn't surprise me, as I no longer have Sky which means no FX, i'll just download a HD torrent of it the morning after it airs in the States, as I do with brand new Smallville & Supernatural, god bless the internet.   ;D

Well I just watched the pilot.  FANTASTIC!  100% Neato approved.

The writers are doing a great job of a 'slow build' to keep the audience invested, instead of just throwing action and gore at the screen every 30 seconds.

The acting is great.  They definitely chose a great lead.  There's always a some visible "rust" in pilot performances while the actors are getting into their character's skin, but the cast shows great promise.

I'm also happily surprised they are being so graphic with the violence.  I didn't think AMC would do that.  However, I'm still curious how they'll handle some more taboo events that happen later in the comic series.

For anyone that hasn't seen it yet, here is a Megavideo link to a high-quality broadcast recording (not the crappy leak that came out last week).

Just watched the first episode, very good indeed, never read the comics like Neato so i've no idea what's to come but I will most definitely be watching them that's for sure, very good pacing, the zombies are well done, good amount of gore but not OTT and some quality acting, Andrew Lincoln is great as the Deputy Sheriff, Lennie James who most people will know from Snatch was very good too, also didn't know that Sarah Wayne Callies (Prison Break's Dr. Tancredi) was in it, i'll watch anything with her in.   ;D

Roll on the next episode.   :)

'The Walking Dead' Fires Entire Writing Staff

The Walking Dead director Frank Darabont has fired the entire writing staff of the AMC series despite the show's high ratings.

For the second season of the series, Darabont plans on using freelancers to script the 13 episodes already ordered by AMC. It is speculated that he could encounter some resistance from members of the Writers Guild. While some writer turnover is expected between seasons, entire overhauls is not commonplace.

The Walking Dead did something incredible in its first season, it not only achieved praise among fans and critics of the genre, but it also gathered interested from people who did not care for the genre, such as myself. It was the story and imagery that drew us all in, and the writing that kept us. Darabont wrote the pilot and second episode of the first season, and then co-wrote/re-wrote the remaining four. Perhaps the writing team just wasn't up to par, and Darabont didn't want to have re-write all of season 2? I'm sure there's probably more to this than is currently being let on.

Currently, Torchwood is the only other series on the air right now that does not have a writing staff on-board. Do you think The Walking Dead will be able to continue with high ratings with freelancers holding the reigns?

On a happier note, AMC is planning to release the first season on DVD and Blu-ray in Spring 2011 through Anchor Bay Entertainment.

Perhaps due to the overwhelming popularity of the show, there was pressure to cut the team before contracts were up for renegotiation?

I don't know how a lot of that behind-the-scenes stuff works in TV.

I hope they *do* kill off most of the characters... Seriously, this is a zombie horror show and almost nobody with a name has died yet. Honestly, try to name one character that you cared about who has died!

In fact, just try to name one character. The characters are so badly written up that I don't know any of their names, despite having seen every episode so far. I end up referring to them by the best identifier I can find for them like "the black guy" or "the old dude", which I suppose is fair because that is clearly how they are written.

Anyhow, Crazy shovel guy and strong-woman-archetype-number-5 chick's pointless sister are the only real casualties so far. Wow. What an emotional moment it was when we watched what's-her-face have to shoot her nameless, almost completely lineless sister in the head. Or how about watching that-one-guy ask to be left by the side of the rode? Powerful stuff. Snooooooze.

For a split second there I thought things were going to take off when they went back into town to get the guns back and rescue cliche redneck guy's cliche redneck brother. They had all the makings of a good horror movie troop: A hero, an a-hole, and not one but TWO minorities to be eaten first. But no, they all made it out alive and, without even finding cliche redneck guy's cliche redneck brother, the entire trip was essentially pointless as far as I am concerned.

I was really stoked for this show, but it has been losing me with each new episode. For an hour long show remarkably little gets accomplished with each episode. It is just a bunch of forced, obvious drama revolving around a bunch of characters that are as two dimensional as the comic book images they are based on.

On a slightly related note, I watched the 80's remake of The Blob the other day. Frank Darabont happened to produce that as well, and some of the cast of The Walking Dead are in it. The Walking Dead could learn a thing or two from The Blob, such as how to kill off a likable character for real effect... A character like the one played by Jeffrey DeMunn, who was the sheriff in The Blob, and who plays the-old-dude in The Walking Dead (I call him Bill, because he reminds me of Bill from Left 4 Dead).

I can't disagree with the points Shakes makes.  But I still love the show.

I think what keeps me invested in the show is the combination of my love of the comic, and the fact that the show has absolutely nothing to do with the comic (so far).  I went into the show thinking I already know it, but I don't which was a surprising relief.

Loved it..I like how they are keeping somewhat of the plot of the comic books. I'm reading the second one right now out of 6. If you like the show so far it only gets better.

Photoshop screw up on racist-redneck-guy's axe in that image.

I got around to watching the opener to season 2 yesterday, and it was decentish. I still think the group of survivors is far more annoying than anyone surviving one month out from the zombie apocalypse has any right to be. I really, REALLY want blondey to get eaten. She never. Stops. WHINGING!

On top of that, the zombos are a bit puzzling. We see that you can easily kill them with a rock, a knife, or a screwdriver... But they trump tanks?

I cant watch the new season yet but do you mean that in a general sense because of all the used military stuff laying around? Because what brought the war machines down wasnt likely mobs of zombies but the destruction of the infrastructure required to keep them fueled, armed and functional. Most of our modern technology, especially the more advanced stuff, becomes useless as the support grid fails.

If referring to something from the new episode specifically, then disregard.

Tanks use fletchette rounds for anti-personnel operations, which basically turn the tank into a massive shotgun. One blast would be able to take out literally hundreds of zombies. Just one. The "support grid" could not be taken down, as each tank in the force would be worth tens of thousands of zombie tangos. Even if you couldn't bring fuel to the tank, you could always bring tanks to the fuel. Tanks are made to drive through buildings, a couple squishy zombos won't stop you.

But this is a reality for any zombie invasion, and not specifically criticism for Walking Dead. What bugs me in Walking Dead is that it actually SHOWS tanks laying around all over the place, shoving in our face the impossibility of zombie apocalypses.

/knows too much about tanks
Title: Re: The Walking Dead (TV)
Post by: NinjaBBehrens on October 19, 2011, 09:02:44 AM
Not really.

What happens when people get sick with zombie virus and cant go to work? Truck drivers, oil production administrators, people who do anything. I agree to an extent that the tanks just laying around everywhere isnt that probable, but in that extremity of infection everything is going to stop moving forward. Food production, any type of factory that is not quarantined, and oil production all cease. That's the support grid. Run out rounds. Run out of fuel. People starve. Get infected. Zombies arent always going to be clustered up by the thousand for a tank to be firing at. All it takes is one bite. One zombie in the right place at the right time. The able bodied force is decreased at a rate that it cant be replaced by natural birth.

As far as bringing tanks to the fuel, that would mean they could only operate within a range of a fuel depot, which would severely limit their usefulness as an offensive weapon. This stuff is all in the discussion of modern warfare anyway. This is how you win a war. It's logistics not just pure fighting strength.

Zombies in clusters are the only dangerous form of zombies. We've seen numerous times on the show that individual zombies are easily dispatched with rocks of all things.

The show wants it both ways: It wants zombies that are tough enough to take down a well supplied, technologically advanced military, and at the same time wants zombies that can be taken care of with a rock to the face.

Boo, says I. Boo!

Stat-recording for TV & movie content cracks me up.

There was this great Christian website (might still exist) where they have detailed records of how many F-words and nipples appear in various things.  It was meant to be like a warning for parents, but ended up being used by teenagers to decide what movie to rent.   :D

I admit to having enjoyed the mid-season finale, obvious though it was.

You know what I really hate about Walking Dead? It isn't so much the show, where if anything I'm just sort of disappointed by all the missed opportunities of zombie greatness. What I hate is how, in any watercooler conversation I hear about this show, if any one of the people involved say that they aren't really digging the show, one of the other jerks in the group will say the exact same thing every time without fail. They will say, and I quote: "It's a show about the people, not about the zombies".

... Wow! Really? You totally blew my mind! Because obviously I just want a stupid show where people get eaten by zombies, and anything involving dialogue is far too sophisticated for me to grasp. The worst part is that you just know that the phrase "it's a show about the people" was invented by some marketing agency involved with the show. I guarantee you that if you go back to the press buzz leading up to the first season, every article and every interview with every actor and writer involved in this thing featured the phrase "it's a show about the people, not about zombies". They spouted this nonsense off at every opportunity, and in time it seeped into the public subconscious enough to be the first thing anybody thinks about when they discuss this damned show. The Walking Dead has become the By Mennen of our time!

I want to slap the hell out of people when I hear that "it's a show about the people" line.

Wow, wouldn't THAT be a scorcher: A Zombie TV show that's set about  the (after)life of a single zombie.

Pilot Episode: Exciting, outbreak happens, character fleshed out, given depth and intricacies and.. is then eaten. Becomes a zombie.

Episode 2: Zombie eats a man.
Episode 3: Zombie eats a woman.
Episode 4: ....

I see great things for this. ;D

That aside, I really agree - I feel the series has amazing, spectacular moments - but a lot of filler that could have been taken much further. The mid-series finale was a very good watch and I'm excited to see where it goes next, but they're going to need to add something for it to be worth a third season surely. Still, it's nice having a people-centric rather than action-heavy series that's still aimed at this genre.

It kind of reminds me of Dragonball Z.

Episode 1: The world is going to explode in 5 minutes... Episode 28: The world just exploded! Next time on Dragonball Z: The world is still exploding, and probably will be for the next ten episodes.

Back in the day some of my friends were huge DBZ fans, but I never watched it until we ended up getting snowed in at one of their houses all weekend.  With nowhere to run, they had me cornered.

There was one episode where we actually used a stopwatch to time how long the episode was minus the dozen "Previously on ...", "Next time one ...", and repeated flashbacks of the same scene.  It came to just over 6 minutes.

Sweet! I keep expecting to hear "NO SEASON 3" like every other thing I've gotten into recently. I'm noticing a big trend for US shows to stop at around 10-12 episode seasons, sort of like ours often do (Doctor Who, for instance) - can't decide if that's good. So long as it keeps them constant I'm happy.

Bump this up, Seeing as it's still going strong.

Still loving the show (even through all the Time and distance mistakes). Season 6 was great, Rick fucked up twice, Trying to lure the hurd away? And being well over confident with being able to take out Negan!
