My only experience with Silent Hill was the movie.

Naturally, I now hate the series passionately.

It's actually pretty faithful to the games only without a male protagonist, certainly one of the better game to movie adaps, miles better than those shitty Resident Evil movies thats for sure.

It wasn't that bad a movie. Didn't understand the ending though.

I know that Rose and her daughter "Sharon" are still trapped in Alessa's alternate dimension, which is why Sean Bean's character can't see them.

Alessa wants to live out the rest of her new life with her new loving mum in her alternate dimension, where she's in control and she feels safe. However, this is also how Dahlia's warning to Rose, "Be careful what you choose," comes to pass.  Unfortunately for Rose, this end result means that she is essentially trapped in Alessa's alternate dimension indefinitely.

Or something..........

Cheers mate. That's kinda what I thought, but there was no explanation.

I think a lot of people thought that, I did too, but still had a read around when I first watched it, I think the Director actually gave away some details in an interview a while back too.

Silent Hill 2 still has to be made yet too, that'll probably have a dodgy unexplained ending too.   :)

Silent Hill Does Exist

My and Shakes' hometowns certainly have that place beat in the lock-your-car-doors department.

Personally, I always thought Athens, Ohio would be an appropriate real-life imitation of Silent Hill.  You know ... because it's a hellmouth.

High five! You don't know fear until you've gotten lost in the "bad" part of town.

As for the Silent Hill movie, it was nothing but blood porn. No plot, no script, no acting, just poop. A horror movie can only be suspenseful if you give a crap about any of the characters, but sadly that requires character development beyond yelling "get out of there!" over and over. It never even attempts to make sense. They pose the question "what is going on?" early on in the film and never begin to even bothering answering it, instead opting to throw copious amounts of blood and cgi at the screen. Watching it, you can almost feel when the "writers" came up against an obvious plot hole they had written themselves into, and instead of writing out of it they just kind of panicked and added in a scene where a lady gets her skinned ripped off for no reason instead.

EDIT: In all fairness, one of the worst films I've ever seen? Maybe not. But had I of had the misfortune of seeing it in a theater I would of walked out 30 minutes in. Sadly, instead I had the misfortune of picking up the turd from a DVD bargain bin, so this garbage is going to be in my film collection forever.

For reference, better game-to-film adaptations: Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Mario Bros, Doom.
Worse: Umm... Maybe Tomb Raider? I haven't seen it, but if it comes anywhere close to being as mind numbing as the games it is based on then it must be something special.

Disagree on all four, especially the middle two  :o

But that's just me  :)

silent hill wasn't a bad film, it wasn't great but i thought it was atmospheric and jumpy in places. saying it's worse than mario bros and street fighter is just irresponsible  ;D

I wasn't trying to say anything about the greatness of Mario Bros or Street Fighter. I know they suck, just not as much as Silent Hill.

Mario Bros beats it for the goomba dance in the elevator. Street Fighter beats it for having Raul Julia.

That is all it takes to make a better movie than Silent Hill.

I'm a long-time Silent Hill fan.  I actually failed one of my college classes because I kept staying up all night playing Silent Hill 2 and oversleeping.  So my expectations for a Silent Hill movie may be slightly inflated.

With that said, I was very diappointed in the movie.  It did not give me a fraction of that wondefully helpless feeling I get from playing the games.

I did see it in theaters opening weekend (I'm a fan), and the entire time I just wanted the whole movie to slow down and let the audience in.  I was expecting a slow-build tension kind of like the first Descent movie, but it was more like a Saw movie.  Slapping my eyeballs with constant graphic violence doesn't allow me to immerse myself in the protagonist role.  It makes me very aware I'm watching a movie, which is not what I wanted.

Blame it on the rain: Silent Hill 8 officially 'Silent Hill: Downpour'

The next installment of Silent Hill, currently in development at Vatra Games, has been titled Silent Hill: Downpour, Game Informer reports. Water is expected to play a heavy role in the game, which Game Informer notes will visit "some new places in Silent Hill." More details will be revealed in the February issue of the magazine.

The excellent Silent Hill: Shattered Memories re-imagined the series' traditional rusty metal "Otherworld" as one of snow and ice; so perhaps Downpour's Otherworld will be a bit warmer and flooded with Speedo monsters. We just pray the next lost soul to stumble into Silent Hill's would-be paradise isn't hydrophobic.
