Title: The Darkness 2
Post by: GamerMan316 on July 27, 2009, 06:21:55 PM
Top Cow announces Darkness sequel in the works

Here's a great indicator of how slowly the wheels can occasionally turn. During Top Cow Productions' Comic-Con panel, head of the comic publisher, Marc Silvestri, was finally able to announce that a follow-up to The Darkness (based on the Top Cow IP) was in the works. We're not surprised if the news has a familiar ring to it: The company hinted at a sequel during the 2008 NYCC ... 15 months ago.

In more immediate news, the company announced that the original game would soon be added to the greatest hits value line-up on PS3 and Xbox for $29.99. If you haven't already checked it out, it's an interesting recommendation, if only to prepare yourself for the sequel that may finally be coming.

According to comments made to VG247, original developer Starbreeze will not be returning for the sequel.

Loved the first game so i have high hopes for the sequel, just a shame Starbreeze are no longer on board.

Top Cow announces Darkness sequel in the works

Here's a great indicator of how slowly the wheels can occasionally turn ...

They were simply waiting to see if I liked the first one.  I finally got time to play it last month, and I gave them the "go ahead" to make a sequel.

You're welcome.   8)

I already told them to get to work on a EDF / Onechanbara crossover.  Should be out by Q4 2011.

The Darkness 2 still on the cards

A sequel to the The Darkness is still being planned, comic book publisher Top Cow has revealed, but legal issues are currently impeding progress.

It's been a while since a follow-up to the gloomy, atmospheric shooter was first hinted at, but Joystiq has managed to secure a status update.

Atom! Freeman (yes, that's his real name), Top Cow's sales and marketing director, said, "There are certain rights issues that we needed to clear up in order to move ahead with The Darkness 2. Those are getting cleared up. While there are no specific plans, it is definitely still on all of our minds."

"We loved the game. The fans loved the game. There's no reason to not do another one. Just making sure that all of our ducks are in a row so that we can begin that process."

In July 2009, original developer Starbreeze stated that it would not be involved with any sequel. There's no word yet on who might step into the breach.

The Darkness was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2007.

Liked the game, brilliant use of atmosphere and the story was very good really drew you in but I wasn't to keen on the WW1 levels they were pants!!! Am hopeful for the sequel just hope that if starbreeze isn't doing it whoever does makes a good game as the license deserves it.

I loved the gunplay. There is nothing quite as satisfying as sneaking up on a baddy in the dark and getting one of those awesome execution moves off. The first time I did it I was in shock. "Did I just stick my gun in some dudes mouth and pull the trigger?... I think I love this game."

I also love how it was a super-"hero" game where you actually get to become a really badass super powered person by the end of the game. In most games the baddies scale their power with you, so you never feel overpowered. In The Darkness the baddies are always just human, where as you become an invincible death machine by the end of the game.

I didn't mind the WWI levels so much. They were a little bland here and there, but they had some cool scenery. I love the skeletons with no arms or legs who sort of razz you as you come near them. They reminded me of the Deadites from Army of Darkness.

The Darkness 2 announced by 2K Games
Sequel confirmed by publisher for autumn release

The Darkness 2 will be released on Xbox 360, PC and PS3 in the autumn, 2K Games has announced.

A sequel to the 2007 shooter has been rumoured for years, but as previously rumoured the follow-up will be developed by Digital Extremes and not original developer Starbreeze.

Players retake the role of Jackie Estacado on what 2K terms a "brutal and personal path". Jackie again wields the destructive power of The Darkness.

2K promises that The Darkness II "breaks out of the sea of conventional first-person shooters with its fervid Quad-Wielding gameplay". This allows players to slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies with their Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons. Again, just like the four-year-old original.

2K says that the game will be "layered with the use of dark versus light, steeped in deep and twisted storytelling, and engulfed in stylistic violence that is visualized through a hand-painted graphic noir technique that stays true to its comic book origins".

Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K commented: "The Darkness II is a well of dark and imaginative violence, and it's a stylized and beautiful nightmare. It continues the 2K Games tradition of delivering quality, innovative games that are filled to the brim with atmosphere and deep storytelling.

"The game takes a unique stance on fighting in the dark versus light. Combined with the arsenal of weapons at Jackie's disposal and the gruesome attacks of the supernatural Demon Arms and Darkness powers, we're proud to announce another title that delivers on our core values of creating games for gamers."

Will it be any good without Starbreeze though?

great news but i really hope that digital extremes do a good job with it. It will be unforgivable if they mess it up, but if they try and stick closely to the originals formula with a few new twists thrown in it should be fine, i hope!

I wonder how much is the developer's choice to include MP vs. the publisher wanting a shiny bulletpoint on the back of the box.

BTW - I'm not a connoisseur of MP, but I didn't think that The Darkness or Bioshock 2's MP were bad at all, I guess it depends on how serious you take the MP, but both those felt like pretty chaotic fun, the times I've played them.

My only concern with MP is if it takes away from the Single Player, which in the case of Bioshock 2, it felt like it did, eventhough the MP wasn't developed in-house.

With the sound and voice work being such an integral part of The Darkness's critical success, what news of the voice actors?

It was confirmed today at Hell Descent that Mike Patton will bring his unique vocals back to the role.

Mike Patton's return may not alleviate some of the concerns about the development team behind the game switching hands from Starbreeze to Digital Extremes, but at least we all now know we'll have something familiar to look forward to!

The Darkness II is scheduled for an Autumn 2011 release.

Who did Patton play? 'Cuz the Italian idiot that you play in the game has both the most annoying voice ever along with the worst lines ever.

"I used to think of the subway system as a big plate of spaghetti, with all the trains being meatballs."

Ugh.

[Mike Patton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Patton)] played the voice of The Darkness, the creature which possessed Jackie, the main character in "The Darkness". Jackie was voiced by [Kirk Acevedo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirk_Acevedo)]. No word yet if Acevedo will return to play Jackie in the sequel.

I think Jackie's lines got a bit better further into the game, i sort of remember ... a quick search and

Jackie Estacado: "I got my first kiss down here. I was fifteen. Some hooker named Candy. She crossed her legs, broke my sunglasses. Good times."

What really had me hooked on the first Darkness were the random phonecalls.  I spent hours dialing every phone number I could find on the internet just to listen to those funny, bizarre, and sometimes creepy conversations.  Awesome.  I hope they have some kind of addictive easter egg in the new one.

The Darkness 2 demo hits Xbox Live first this month
Gold subscribers get it a week earlier

A Darkness 2 demo will be available to Xbox Live Gold subscribers on 17th January, with Silver subscribers getting their shot on the 24th.

There's no word on what the demo contains, but hopefully we'll go hands-on with both Jackie Estacado in the campaign and his four supernaturally-powered helpers in co-op. The game begins with Jackie being assassinated, obliging him to conjure his old friend the Darkness and open a fresh chapter of heart-swallowing and head-chomping.

Developer Digital Extremes is using a cell-shaded artstyle in place of the original's gritty photo-realism. The co-op mode involves axes and katanas and is, thus, worth reading about (http://www.oxm.co.uk/36813/the-darkness-2-gets-four-player-co-op-with-unique-darkness-powers/).

I'm going to play The Darkness 2 regardless, enjoyed the first one immensely. Downloaded the demo the other day and will play it sometime this weekend.

I don't mind someone writing a review saying that the game outshines the demo (it's supposed to), but don't steer people away from it. Especially if it's not a bugged/broken demo.

If you're interested in playing through The Darkness II - and from what I've seen so far, you definitely should be - then I'd recommend leaving the demo alone.

Just seems somewhat counter-productive in a way, IMO.

Demo awesomeness confirmed... ;D I don't see any reason why not to give it a spin.

BTW, I was reading though this thread and just an (albeit late #)) update on the voice actor situation -

[Brian Bloom (http://www.giantbomb.com/brian-bloom/72-78378/)], known for voicing Kane from the Kane & Lynch franchise is serving as the voice for Jackie Estacado. Additionally, Brian Bloom has done voicework on Rage / Mass Effect 3 / F.E.A.R. 3 / Bulletstorm / Dragon Age II / Dead Space II / Mafia II / Alpha Protocol....yada, yada, yada...

Bloom is also credited with some television acting and writing.

I just finished the demo and it is splendiforous. I dig the art direction, and the gunplay is super solid. Brutal, bloody, fun as hell. The new Darkness controls are really intuitive, as well. During a battle on the street I could walk through a hail of bullets, rip a car door off it's hinges to use as a shield, shoot down a few baddies, then throw the car door at a baddy to my left, decapitating him. It was kind of brilliant.

Three issues:
1) It was really easy.
2) For a game called "The Darkness", it is way too... Bright. The first game was much darker and grittier, and I think I like that better.
3) Get that sh*t off my screen! Aargh! Another game that is infected with the disease of plastering XP points all over the screen every time I kill a baddy. You want to reward me visually for killing someone in a sadistically clever way? Let me savor his gruesome death! Don't obscure my vision with "Wishbone! +100".

-I'm sure the demo wasn't placed on "Brutal" dificulty, so the demo's difficulty is really a non-issue.

-The brightness and art direction does seem kind of a contrary feel to the the first game, but I can appreciate the bold step and attempt to take the palette from the comic books and hit it with a dose of adrenaline:

-Your third point is well taken. There's so much going on with the action on screen that the text can start to feel like annoying gnats. Would be nice to allow for that option to be turned off, or hopefully it's consistent pestering is something specific and exclusive to the demo.

Still though, can't wait for this one. I was concerned when the helm was changed up from Starbreeze to Digital Extremes, but so far this one's looking like a keeper for me.

Yeah, those were just minor quibbles. I was really impressed with what I saw in the demo. I even really like the cartoony art for the most part, I only wish it were a touch darker.
