New Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim details emerge
Bethesda talks intelligent narrative building with Radient Story

New Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim details have emerged on the internet detailing a sophisticated system creating in-game narrative.

Bethesda's devised a new story management system called Radient Story, which allows the game to hit you with random encounters leading to quests that - importantly - are tailored to where you're at in the game and what you've done in the past:

"Traditionally in an assassination quest, we would pick someone of interest and have you assassinate them," Todd Howard, Bethesda's creative director, explained to Game Informer.

"Now there is a template for an assassination mission and the game can conditionalize all the roles - where it happens, under what conditions does it take place, who wants someone assassinated, and who they want assassinated."

"All this can be generated based on where the character is, who he's met. They can conditionalize that someone who you've done a quest for before wants someone assassinated, and the target could be someone with whom you've spent a lot of time before."

"There are a wide variety of these random encounters," expands design director Bruce Nesmith.

"Many of them are things the player can interact with, some are not. You might save a priest who then tells you about a dungeon where there are people trapped that need saving. You might run across mammoth beset by a pack of wolves."

I just hope that this game has the modding potential that Morrowind and Oblivion did.

Playing the Nehrim complete overhaul for Oblivion was quite an experience, and even FCOM: Convergence was a breath of fresh air.

I'm sure the base game will be amazing, I just like to tinker :)

I like the idea being as fast paced as the plasmids in Bioshock/2. It'll make me a hell of a lot more likely to pick a magic class when I finally get my hands on it. And I've been inspired by this to trade something for Oblivion on CAG and I should have it soon for another, sadly achievementless, playthrough. :D

I dono, they've never pulled off a decent combat system in Elder Scrolls yet. Here's to hoping.

I was 100% stealth during my Oblivion playthrough.  Combat was never a factor once my character levelled up.

If Skyrim has a stealth system, I'll play it the same way.   I looooooooooooove sneaking behind an enemy for an instant kill, or headshotting them with an arrow when noone is looking.  It probably takes twice as long to complete the game that way, but it's worth it.

I ended up playing stealth as well. If things got dicey (or in the arena where you aren't allowed to stealth) I would just run backwards and peg them with arrows. It was ridiculous, but it worked.
