BioShock 2 dev does Xbox exclusive XCom
Series rebooted as FPS

The rumours were true (sort of): 2K's announced an XCom reboot exclusively for Xbox 360 and PC. Though it's not Irrational Games developing this one - it's the other BioShock studio, 2K Marin.

2K describes XCom as "the re-imagining of one of gaming's most storied and beloved franchises," claiming that it "combines the strategic core of the groundbreaking franchise with a suspense-filled narrative and distills it into a tense and unique first-person shooter experience."

2K's blurb reads: "XCOM is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity's struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat.

"True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity - and frailty - against a foe beyond comprehension.

"By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world," the publisher says.

X-Com had been rumoured to be in development at BioShock creator, Ken Levine's studio, Irrational Games, but yesterday the LA Times reported that they're busy at work on an "original title".

2K boss, Christoph Hartmann said of the announcement: "With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise. Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride."

Good stuff. See the first screenshot above.

OXM editor hypes up next month's huge announcement

Official Xbox Editor Jon Hicks has told CVG that the mag will next month reveal the return of a "substantial franchise" - as an Xbox exclusive.

The Next Month page of the latest issue of UK magazine says a 'gaming classic' is set to return, as you can see here:

Hicks told us: "It's a very substantial franchise and it's going to be a very big surprise. A good one, though - we're really looking forward to it."

A 'very big surprise'? We likey. But what could it be, do you reckon?

XCom as a first person shooter?  ??? ??? ??? ???

Wow. So basically they are taking the name and legacy of one of the best games ever created and raping the hell out of it for $.

 >:( >:( I'm pissed. 2K Marin can suck a big one. Bioshock 2 was a derivative turd, and XCom deserves better. >:( >:(

Has the XCOM FPS become 'The Bureau'?
Long-delayed XCOM prequel may be reappearing soon with a changed name.

Four new websites discovered by Superannuation hint at a possible rebranding of the classic game-reimagined-as-shooter.

When 2K initially revealed the XCOM shooter back in 2010, Syndicate hadn't been revealed or come out, so our nostalgia circuits weren't totally frazzled. However, at E3 2011 the shooter was obviously struggling, coming across more as a linear Mass Effect pastiche than an innovative tactical shooter in its own right. We were still excited, but the reveal of the strategy game XCOM: Enemy Unknown took that away.

Now it seems that 2K may be moving the game out of the XCOM universe: the web-addresses thebureau-game.com, thebureau-game.net, whathappenedin62.com, and whathappenedin62.net have all appeared at the same time as all the XCOM assets have disappeared from the 2K site and from their Youtube channel. The XCOM shooter was all set around 1962, the year of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

It's obvious that a relaunch of some sort is happening, more so given that Kotaku reports the game has moved from a first- to a third-person perspective and from 2K Canberra back to 2K Marin. It may also be arriving as a cheaper downloadable-only title.

It's worth noting that this isn't the first XCOM shooter to hit the buffers; the similarly-troubled third-person shooter XCOM: Enforcer was bodged together from the remnants of two other games back in 2001 in a desperate bid to save Hasbro Interactive.

2K Announces DLC for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified

Exclusive pre-order content and post-launch DLC dives further into the declassified origin of the secret XCOM organisation.

DLC:
2K and 2K Marin, makers of BioShock® 2, announced post-launch downloadable content plans today for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified that will see the title supported with updates beyond its August 23, 2013 UK release date. The narrative-driven add-on content will expand the declassified origin story of the clandestine XCOM organisation and will be available on the Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Windows® PC. The first DLC pack will be available exclusively to Xbox 360 players.

“We take great pride in our track record of providing high-quality post-release content for our games,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “We will continue to expand the XCOM universe by telling original stories set in the paranoia-drenched Cold War era of The Bureau.”

“The alternate 1962 universe that we’ve created for The Bureau is vast and there are many more stories to tell about the early days of XCOM,” said Morgan Gray, development director at 2K Marin. “We’re excited that our stories will provide a new perspective on the war effort, much like how our critically acclaimed Minvera’s Den DLC for BioShock 2 allowed us to present a unique perspective of Rapture.”

PRE ORDER BONUS:
Players who pre-order The Bureau through any of the participating retailers will receive a bonus campaign side-mission called “Codebreakers.” In this mission, a top secret government communications facility responsible for intercepting and decoding the enemy’s transmissions has gone radio-silent. In a desperate attempt to turn the tides of the secret war, Special Agent Carter and his squad must make contact with personnel in order to bring the facility back online, eliminate any threats, and decrypt the mysterious code.

In addition to the Codebreakers side-mission, those who pre-order The Bureau through GAME will receive the Light Plasma Pistol as an exclusive in-game item. Early Bureau research into outsider weapons technology has yielded promising results in the form of a prototype light plasma pistol. Not as bulky as its Outsider predecessor, this compact weapon fires condensed bolts of plasma and boasts a vastly improved rate-of-fire, giving players an early edge in the secret war for humanity’s survival.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is rated 16 by PEGI and will be available on August 20, 2013 in North America and August 23, 2013 internationally for £49.99 SRP on the Xbox 360 console, PlayStation 3 system and Windows PC.
