wow it's like they have a free service (let's call it Silver) and then a premium service (let's call it Gold).

We're also told that subscription will allowed limited-time play of full games - PSN releases, PSone classics, minis and also proper releases - with a changing line-up on offer each month.

There will also be a library of games available for indefinite play to subscribers for no extra cost.

Sounds kind of like the old Sega Channel.  I'd have to see the game lineup and know more about how limited "limited" actually is.

Sony, you have my attention.

PlayStation Plus is doomed to fail

PlayStation Plus is finally here.

If first impressions are everything, then PlayStation Plus is pure waste of money.

For months on end Sony hinted at the possibility of a premium PSN service. PlayStation Plus was finally unveiled at this years E3 to a mixed reception. And now that the service is finally out not much has changed.

It is inexcusable for Sony to be launch a service like this without any must have content. At E3 Sony touted what a great service this would be to extend the experience of the PS3 even further. Yet, in the first month of service the best value seems to be two PSOne Classic games.

Here in lies the problem with the PlayStation Plus service. There is no content that really expands what the PS3 can do. There are no dedicated servers for a better online gaming experience. There is no cross game voice chat. In fact the only thing the service seems to bring anything new to the system is the ability for automatic downloading and updating of Firmware.

Where are all the must have features that PlayStation Plus was supposed to bring to the table. As of now there is no reason for anyone other than the most die hard of Sony fan boys to purchase the service. If Sony wants the service to succeed then they will have to bring more to the table.

As of now, if this is Sony's big answer to Xbox Live then god help PS3 owners.

For PSN to realistically compete with XBL, Sony will have to completely remove the current PSN service and rebuild it from the ground up.

XBL is a quasi-cloud service, while PSN is more like a proxy.  Sony just doesn't have the complete integration capabilities Microsoft has, which will always prevent them from offering a more robust set of features.

The drawback is that it would put a much greater strain on Sony, since they've forced publishers to carry a lot of the backend costs.  The potential bonus would be more budget 3rd-party publishers finally being able to afford PSN compatibility.

Maybe next generation, Sony.   ;)

I agree, being free is the only thing Sony have done well and that's a push, great console, not so great online features.   :)
