I use AVG's free anti-virus sotware. Just does the basics, but it's good enough for me.

I have to admit I use the microsoft one which is free and not bad at all. Runs in the background well and only a tiny (almost unnoticeable) slowdown when updating and scanning.

Both AVG and the Microsoft one are pretty good.

I prefer to use the Microsoft Windows Defender, but at the moment my Windows XP is a little... shall we say, less than legit? So instead I am using AVG and I have no complaints.

I got Norton for free when I got broadband, very good software but hogged my memory  and took about 12GB of my hard drive just for bloody virus definitions.

You can now obtain legit XP keys from Microsoft for free.  Just follow the "Registration by phone" steps and when asked how many computer is currently installed with this version of XP, enter 2 or less.

I've used the same XP disc on over 10 computers, all of which have legit keys from Microsoft.

I've been using Avast for about 2 years.  Hands-down the best overall security I've ever found for free.

BONUS:  It uses for low resources, so it doesn't slow down your PC like many others do.

Norton is poo.  It (ironically) infects your computer by integrating itself firmly into the registry.  Sort of like AOL (America Online) software ... ugh.

Trying to uninstal Norton from a PC is one of the most difficult tasks I've ever had to do.
