Rock Band 3 to have vocal harmonies, Harmonix (accidentally) confirms

At Harmonix's PAX East 2010 panel, five Rock Band designers answered questions from the audience for "An Awkward Hour" with one major stipulation: No questions about Rock Band 3. However, when an audience member inquired whether Green Day: Rock Band songs would still have harmonies when imported into RB2, Harmonix Project Lead Chris Foster began listing off the games with harmony support. "We've said Rock Band 3 would have harmonies already, right?" Foster asked his fellow panelists, who responded with a booming, "No!"

Foster clammed up without revealing more details about Rock Band 3's harmonies (or even answering the attendee's original question), only mentioning, "It's been nice working at Harmonix." (We think he was joking about that last part.)

Rock Band 3 primed for launch

(http://fwdcdn.five.tv/upload/0031/1317/rockband-3_size_9.jpg?1273225240)

Rock Band 3, the big time successor to the game that sparked a virtual music revolution, is due to get detailed this month, with a full-on launch due at gaming megashow E3 in June.

The latest instalment in the rocking franchise will be shown off to gaming bigwigs on 20 May in Los Angeles. There are promises of more realistic looks, with one insider saying the title will change the way the world looks at music games.

For now, details of setlists and new instruments remain under wraps. But rest assured this will be out and ready for the Christmas party season, letting you rock out in front of the telly while pretending you're actually kicking it at Wembley in front of 80,000 adoring fans.

Rock Band 3 To Tickle the Ivories

There's a Green Day: Rock Band demo up on the Xbox Live Marketplace, which in itself is very nice and all that, but once you've finished with the demo you'll see an image that shows the Rock Band guitar, drum, bass and microphone icons, which have now been joined by a piano one too.

You might notice that there's also a big '3', suggesting that Rock Band 3 will be adding keyboards and pianos to its arsenal. There are three microphones in the icon too, meaning that harmonies will be returning from The Beatles: Rock Band.

So, ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony and you'll be able to sing in harmony too?! That's a lot of harmony.

What can we expect to see in Rock Band 3's tracklist then? Stevie Wonder? Billy Joel? Or god forbid...Elton John? Jerry Lee Lewis will undoubtedly be in there somewhere. Perhaps we'll get to play some hideous 80s' synth music. That would be amazing.

No doubt all will be revealed in the coming months.

Rock Band 3 trailer, details in
Have you been "clamouring for keyboards"?

Harmonix' Rock Band 3 has been blown wide open by USA Today - keyboards included.

The new game, scheduled for this Christmas in the States on PS3, 360 and Wii, expands the virtual band to seven instruments; drums, lead and bass guitar, lead vocals, two harmony vocals and yes - a keyboard.

Also due for the game's release are two 'advanced' guitar controllers that take advantage of the game's Pro mode, one of which is described as "a full-sized, fully functional Fender guitar" (sold separately).

(http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/screenshot_232814.jpg)

Harmonix has also nicked the drop-in, drop-out functionality of recent Guitar Heros, and "improved animations" and "refined gameplay features" are also promised.

"With the introduction of keyboards, we get to bring a ton of amazing new music onto the platform, which will help feed the appetite for music for years to come," Alex Rigopulos, Harmonix CEO told USA Today.

Among the 83 new songs to be included in Rock Band 3, Rigopulos says, "it's hard to pick a favorite, but for The Doors to be making an appearance on Rock Band finally with their classic Break On Through, I love that one. And Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody is endlessly fun.

"Our ambition for Rock Band 3 was really to re-energize and reinvigorate the (music game) category and advance it and move it forward," he said.

Key feature in more detail:
Better story. Design your own characters and session musicians from improved character models and watch their story unfold throughout the game. Your band members are seen getting into the van to go to a show, and practicing as well as performing. They even appear as you choose songs to play. "It is a really cool way to make sure you are always in the narrative no matter which mode you are in," Teasdale says. "The entire game is essentially one story of your band."

•More fluid gameplay. Players can jump in or out of songs without interrupting a song already in progress. They can also change instruments or difficulty settings during a song without pausing. "It's a really cool way to get rid of that friction that players have when they are in a party situation," Teasdale says.

•Revamped song-filtering system. With the Rock Band library expected to grow to about 2,000 songs by year's end, it has grown too big for simply scrolling. With the new system, "you can say, 'only show me songs in Rock Band 3? or 'only songs under three minutes' or 'Eighties metal songs from my (downloadable) collection,' " Teasdale says. "It's a really cool way to take your full library down to a manageable list of songs."

Not to be forgotten, the keyboards' addition — along with carrying over the three-part harmonies from The Beatles: Rock Band and new Green Day: Rock Band games — means that "you can play as a seven -player band," Teasdale says, "which is an amazing experience."

•Rock Band Pro. This new music learning mode lets players develop real-world music-playing fundamentals for keyboards, guitars and drums. More realistic music notations replace the standard color-coded notes during gameplay. For guitar, numbers flow down the screen along six guitar strings, telling you where to place your hands on the neck and when to strum.

Two new guitar controllers in the works have actual strings where you strum; one is a full-sized, fully functional six-string Squier Stratocaster from Fender. "It can tell where your fingers are based on technology in the neck and the bridge of the guitar. No buttons," Drake says. "While you're playing it, it feels exactly like playing a real guitar," because that's what you're doing.

The other is a Fender Mustang Pro controller from accessory maker Mad Catz with a field of buttons in each fret. As your fingers compress the smaller non-colored buttons on that guitar's neck, your finger positions are represented in the game's display. "You can go from plucking single notes to power chords and bar chords, we have crazy stuff like tapping and slides," Dubrofsky says. "If you ever had any aspirations of connecting with the music in a deeper way ... you are really going to like Rock Band 3."

For drums, three new cymbals are added to the standard four drum pads, and you are forced to play the correct cymbal at the right time. "It really immerses you more. You feel more like a drummer," Dubrofsky says. "It's not only for expert levels. You can come in on easy and actually play Pro drums. We have all the different levels established. It's actually really fun. You are playing up on the high hat or down on the snare, and it feels more like a kit than ever before."

On keyboards, Sussman says, "we're actually utilizing the full two-octave range that the keyboard controller has. Everything that you are playing, whether you are playing on easy or expert, is accurate musical information. The track looks like a real keyboard track, and you are playing notes on the keyboard that if you were to step away from the game and were to play on a real piano, they would be the right notes."

Your voice won't suck in Rock Band 3
iZotope pitch correction tech on board to help you out

Audio signal processing company iZotope has signed a deal to provide pitch correction technology to Harmonix for Rock Band 3.

That means your usually brain-scraping off-tone bellowing will be converted into something at least mildly audible by the game before it's pumped through the speakers, making everyone's experience that little bit better.

"Using iZotope's real-time pitch detection and pitch shifting middleware, Rock Band 3 provides players with the option to enable vocal effects commonly used in the music industry, assisting players to sing on key more easily with pitch correction and bringing the tools that pros use into the living room," says the PR.

Mark Ethier, CEO of iZotope said: "With the production values of video games rivaling that of commercial albums and blockbuster films, consumers expect the same caliber of video and audio quality during dynamic, real-time game play.

"Rock Band is an ideal platform for us to showcase iZotope's technology so we can provide gamers with studio-grade audio effects that professional mixers, sound designers and others in the entertainment industry have relied on for years."

The new game, scheduled for this Christmas in the States on PS3, 360 and Wii, expands the virtual band to seven instruments; drums, lead and bass guitar, lead vocals, two harmony vocals and yes - a keyboard.

Rock Band 3 DLC Revealed...Already!

GameStop's Canadian website has revealed the first Rock Band 3 DLC, which they're offering as a pre-order incentive.

Get your order in, and you'll be entitled to download these three tracks when the game ships later this year:

    * Talking Heads - "Burning Down The House
    * Deftones - "My Own Summer"
    * New Order  - "Blue Monday"

You might notice that two of those three tracks are aimed more at the jaunty pop end of the scale and revolve around Rock Band 3's new keyboard. "Blue Monday" and "Burning Down The House" are perfectly suited to the keys, whereas Deftones is good old heavy rock. Not a bad trio of bonus tunes.

Rock Band 3 is slated for a holiday 2010 release.

Rock Band designer quits Harmonix

Senior designer Dan Teasdale has announced his departure from Harmonix and the end of his involvement with the Rock Band series.

"I came to the realisation recently that my career has been driven by a secret achievement grind, hidden relatively successfully by the fun of making games," Teasdale wrote on his blog.

"I craved the hit of being hands on. It's 100 per cent of your job as a staff designer, but as I became a senior and then a lead on AAA titles with 200+ people on them, the ability to chart the vision and the direction of a title starts to encroach how much time you can spend tweaking the details personally."

So Teasdale decided to leave Harmonix and head instead to Twisted Pixel, where he's about to start work on "a ridiculously cool project".

He wrote, "It's the holy grail of game design positions - I'll get to contribute and help drive the direction of a well funded and supported new title with a close knit superteam, while at the same time being hands on and able to directly impact all aspects of the game."

Teasdale most recent project was Rock Band 3, which he described as being "design complete and on the final path to 0 bugs". The game will be released this autumn.

Rock Band 3 out globally in October

Rock Band 3 will ship to the US on Tuesday, 26th October and to Europe on the 29th, MTV and Harmonix have announced.

GameStop, Amazon and Wal-Mart are signed-up as the American retail pre-order partners. GameStop's got three downloadable songs to entice your loyalty, Amazon's got an in-game guitar and a $10 voucher and Wal-Mart's just got a $10 voucher.

The most eye-catching new feature of Rock Band 3 is the keyboard peripheral. Rock Band 3 has a Pro mode, too, that uses the six-stringed guitars to actually teach you to play the instrument.

Plus, bands can now be seven people strong, and there's a new goal-based story career story with drop-in, drop-out gameplay.

Rock Band 3: Marilyn Manson, others confirmed
Harmonix reveals some of the artists in its next rhythm action effort

Harmonix and MTV have revealed a small teasing list of songs and artists set to feature in Rock Band 3, and its limb-shaking Kinect dance game, Dance Central.

Earlier in the month EA's confirmed the UK release date for Rock Band 3 as October 29. In the US, those who pre-order from US retailer GameStop will get DLC including the appearance of New Order classic Blue Monday and Talking Head's Burning Down The House. Pre-order deals are detailed here.

Rock Band 3 is the first in the series to offer keyboard support. Mad Catz showed off its official keyboard peripheral for the game at E3 last month. The title also offers a Pro mode which supports six-string guitars - effectively providing a tutorial for those who wish to learn the instrument in 'real life'.

Here that list:

Rock Band 3 tracks:

* Marilyn Manson - "The Beautiful People"
* Filter - "Hey Man, Nice Shot"
* Foreigner - "Cold As Ice"
* Def Leppard - "Foolin'"
* The B-52s - "Rock Lobster"
* Tears For Fears - "Everybody Wants To Rule The World"

(All tracks are original master recordings)

Dance Central tracks:

* Snoop Dogg - "Drop It Like Its Hot"
* Salt-N-Pepa - "Push It"
* Young MC - "Bust A Move"

(All tracks are original master recordings)

Rammstein and Bob Marley in Rock Band 3

Songs by German rockers Rammstein, reggae legend Bob Marley and Australian post punk band INXS will be in Rock Band 3, MTV Games has announced.

MTV's just revealed 11 new songs that'll feature on the internationally-flavoured 83-song on-disc soundtrack.

They are:

Bob Marley & The Wailers' Get Up, Stand Up

INXS' Need You Tonight

Poni Hoax' Antibodies

Rammstein's Du Hast

Roxette's The Look

Tokio Hotel's Humanoid

HIM's Killing Loneliness

Maná's Oye Mi Amor

Slipknot's Before I Forget

War's Low Rider

Rock Band 3, due out on 29th October for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS, adds three-part vocal harmonies and a keyboard peripheral.

The career mode's been given a new lick of paint, and there's easier drop-in and drop-out and no-fail features.

Rock Band 3 has a Pro mode, too, that uses the six-stringed guitars to actually teach you to play the instrument.

Plus, bands can now be seven people strong.

A Harmonix staff member at Gamescom may have inadvertently revealed the entire track list for Rock Band 3.

The staff member scrolled through the track list while a local attendee captured the whole thing on camera.

I will be on rockband 1 tonight, but i only have the drums until my guitar arrives. I plan on nailing hysteria on expert (i can play the real drums quite well, so i shouldn't have too many problems)  :)

Back on topic, I don't think they have realised the potential problems that will arise from including a real guitar with the game. Guitar strings snap, and if you aren't a guitarist you won't know how to replace them. Even if you do guitar strings can be expensive, with the cheapest set being around £6.00. That could soon mount up over time. Also the game would be way too easy for experienced guitarists like myself, apparently if you play on expert mode you are basically playing the real guitar parts with chord names and everything. So i would be able to easily blast through the game on expert mode as i have been playing for nearly 15 years and no doubt i will know the guitar parts for a lot of the songs anyway. If you have never played guitar your hands will quickly become calloused and sore due to pressing your fingers onto the steel strings, and you may also get frustrated trying to play the songs on even the easiest setting, playing guitar is difficult - fact. I can imagine it will also be very expensive to buy when it's released, even more expensive than rock band 1 or 2. Personally for all the above reasons i think rock band 3 is gonna bomb, but we shall wait and see.....

Good points there mate but Rock Band 3 will not bomb, I guarantee it, the majority of people that buy it will be the people that intend to play it on their plastic guitars and drums (myself included) or for the new keyboard add on.  It will sell bucketloads just on that basis, it's a guaranteed money maker.

According to ign it will be super expensive for the real guitar and a copy of the game, i mean't that the premise of playing a real guitar would bomb - which is the premise of the new rock band game. The agem itself will do well i don't dispute that, but the idea of real guitars will fail. Sorry should have made myself clearer

No worries mate, you're right about it most likely bombing with the real guitar but sales of the standard version and plastic versions will more than make up for it.   :)

I play piano for real, im no mozart or anything but i am quite good (around grade 5) so i am really looking forward to playing the rock band 3 keyboard, especially on pro mode! In fact pro mode sounds like it could actually improve my piano playing skills, and teach people who have never played keys how too. Can't wait, though and i'm even coming around to the idea of a real guitar.

Harmonix has confirmed that Rock Band 3 buyers will be able to export songs from Rock Band 2 into the new game.

As with the similar process for RB1, Harmonix's John Drake confirmed that rockers can hand over a few pounds to export songs from the previous game onto their hard drive where Rock Band 3, will pick them up, letting you play all yourold favs in addition to the selection of new tracks.

Better still, it's confirmed that the feature will be in all three console versions of the game, so Wii owners won't be left out.

Drake did, however, say that there can be licensing issues for a couple of songs so they might not all make it through the transition.

He also told RockBandAide that while the cost of regular downloadable tracks will remain the same, songs for RB3's Pro Mode will be slightly higher due to Harmonix having "a lot more work to do" on those songs.

I want to know if we will be able to play keyboard on any of the exported songs, probably not though :-\

Good stuff mate, as for the keyboard working on exported songs, i've just read this on the official Rock Band forums.

"We have the technology to update older songs and DLC for keyboards, pro-guitar, and pro-bass, and maybe harmonies. Two things: 1. Keep in mind, especially any of you familiar with the RBN, there are no keyboard audio streams in those old songs, there's like actual substantial changes, so if you miss a note with the keyboard, the keyboard goes away, which we think is really important for gameplay. [2.] And it's a lot of f**king work."

"For right now, we're focused on launching Rock Band 3, the first slate of DLC (the first DLC going forward with keyboards, will have keyboards), and then I think we're going to do some selective updating of the back catalog. We don't have time on our calendar, we don't have pricing, and we don't have information on how it's going to work yet."

However, the keyboard can be used to play guitar or bass tracks for those songs that do not have keyboards charted.

Rock Band 3 Pro tracks to cost extra

Bad news for those looking forward to the new Pro Mode guitar tracks in Rock Band 3 - they're going to cost you more than the regular songs.

"All DLC released for Rock Band 3 will be fully Rock Band 3-compatible, which means it'll come with Pro Mode for keyboard and drums, harmony mode, etc," MTV's Paul DeGooyer told IGN.

"The only thing that's more difficult for us in terms of authoring time is the guitar stuff, so we've decided to sell Pro Mode for guitar separately. If you're not interested in Pro Mode for guitar, you can still get the DLC that should conform to our current DLC pricing, and you get Pro Mode for all your other instruments."

At the moment, DeGooyer pointed out, your average downloadable Rock Band song costs $1.99. Purchasing Pro Mode for guitar will cost an extra dollar.

"It's not going to be five bucks or anything. We think it's a really fair price," he said. "The alternative would be of course to include it (in the regular download) and up the price for everybody, which I don't think is really fair."

According to DeGooyer, not all tracks will have a Pro Guitar mode. There are plans to retrofit Pro Mode to some tracks already in the Rock Band library, but the details are yet to be locked down.

"We haven't completely worked out exactly how we would be able to get it to market, in a way that recognises people who have already purchased it, and thus be able to supply the updated file at a discount, which would be our preference," said DeGooyer.

Harmonix: Rock Band can go on and on

There are plenty of new places to take the Rock Band franchise in the next five years, developer Harmonix has insisted.

Rock Band 3, due later this year, adds a keyboard but that's not the end of the road for the series. CEO Alex Rigopulos told Edge that the studio is only scratching the surface.

"There's a lot of creative terrain to explore with Rock Band: new forms of interaction between the player and the music. We still have some very exciting things planned."

Bring on the 21-stringed Malian kora, we say.

Sales of music games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero plummeted a whopping 46 per cent in the US last year, prompting talk that the two franchises were played out.

Rigopulos also hinted at an impending return to two of the studio's earliest games – PlayStation 2 titles Frequency and the excellent Amplitude.

"We loved those games and of course have been focused on other areas in recent years. Rock Band's been focused on rock music, Dance Central has the luxury of focusing on all kinds of other music, but in terms of rhythm-action-type games focused on electronica, that's something we'd love to come back to at the right moment in time. Or something completely new focused on that style of music."

Rock Band 3 arrives on DS, PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 29th October.

Rock Band 3's First DLC Will Be From The Doors

Here's some news that will light your fire *snigger*. The Doors will be the first batch of DLC coming to Rock Band 3 post-launch, but even better is the fact that you'll be able to grab them for absolutely free during the first week joining "Break On Through (To The Other Side)", which will already be on the game disc.

The tracks will of course be fully-compatible with Rock Band 3's keys and Pro Mode, and there will be an additional pack of nine Doors tracks to purchase alongside the three being given away for free.

"I'm very excited that keyboards are finally a part of Rock Band. It's about time you guys got hip to the necessity of keys in rock," said Ray Manzarek, keyboardist for The Doors. "This is going to be great for all the gamers, because it's a lot more difficult. Rock Band 3 will require some brainwork, so let's 'Break On Through!'  By the way, get those free downloads: 'Light My Fire,' 'Riders On the Storm' and 'Touch Me' are all great keyboard songs."

Too right they are Ray, my old mate. Check out all of The Doors downloadable content, which will be available from October 26th in North America and October 29th in Europe:

The Doors Downloadable Tracks

    * "Light My Fire" (Free from Oct. 26 – Nov. 1 in game, features Pro Guitar and Pro Bass)
    * "Riders on the Storm" (Free from Oct. 26 – Nov. 1 in game, features Pro Guitar and Pro Bass)
    * "Touch Me" (Free from Oct. 26 – Nov. 1 in game, features Pro Guitar and Pro Bass)
    * "Hello, I Love You"
    * "L.A. Woman"
    * "Love Her Madly"
    * "Love Me Two Times"
    * "Peace Frog"
    * "People Are Strange"
    * "Roadhouse Blues"
    * "Soul Kitchen"
    * "The Crystal Ship"

Pricing is still to be confirmed and as you know, Pro Mode tracks will set you back more than their regular counterparts. Look out for Rock Band 3 at the end of the month.

Billy 'The Piano Man' Joel Coming To Rock Band 3 As DLC
No "Uptown Girl" thankfully

It was bound to happen. With a nickname like 'The Piano Man', we were wondering when we'd be seeing confirmation that Billy Joel would be coming to Rock Band 3, now with added keyboards, and here it it is.

"The addition of the keyboard made me interested in bringing my music to Rock Band," said Mr. Joel. "The game introduces music to an enthusiastic audience in a powerful way, and now also helps players get a grasp on the fundamentals of the keyboard."

Piano Man Joel has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and has scooped six Grammys since his first hit in 1973. He's also both a Rock and Roll and Songwriters' Hall of Famer.

There'll be a bunch of Joel's tracks available for Rock Band 3 from December 14th, including the following:

    * "Big Shot"
    * "Captain Jack"
    * "It's Still Rock N Roll to Me"
    * "Movin' Out"
    * "Only The Good Die Young"
    * "Piano Man"
    * "Pressure"
    * "Say Goodbye to Hollywood"
    * "The Entertainer"
    * "The Stranger"

The DLC songs will include Keys and Pro Key Parts.

Rock Band 3 is out on October 26th in North America and October 29th in the rest of the world.

More charges for Rock Band 3 DLC

If you want keyboard and vocal harmony parts added to your old Rock Band songs then you're going to have to buy them again.

Specifically, you'll need the Rock Band 3 version of the song charged at, presumably, the default DLC price - the Harmonix website (http://www.rockband.com/forums/showthread.php?207060-DLC-Week-of-11-9-Bon-Jovi-12-Pack-plus-New-Order-Talking-Heads-amp-Deftones-singles!) doesn't clarify.

The only upgrade available for old Rock Band songs is to add the Pro Guitar and Bass tracks, a procedure that costs 80 Microsoft Points/£0.59/100 Wii points.

Today marks the arrival of Bon Jovi songs to Rock Band 3. Existing Rock Band songs "Livin' on a Prayer", "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Wanted Dead or Alive" have all been updated to Rock Band 3 versions.

Each song costs roughly a quid, or it's a tenner for the full 12-song list.

Rock Band 3 may have scored 10/10 on Eurogamer when released late last month, but the game is struggling to find a audience, as low first-week sales gave way to even lower second week sales. Mind you, the Pro-style RB3 instruments are still to arrive in many shops - perhaps, like Carl Lewis, Rock Band 3 is a late starter.

Viacom to sell Rock Band developer

UPDATE: In a question and answer session Viacom said Harmonix made a loss of around "$65 million" for the financial quarter. "That loss reflects how we've been informed by the potential buyers we've been talking to," it said. The loss would have been half that number otherwise.

"Third parties have a different economic view of Harmonix. It will be worth more to them than it is to us," said the media giant. That's why it's selling.

ORIGINAL STORY

Viacom plans to sell Rock Band and Dance Central developer Harmonix.

No explanation was given in its financial report (http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=85242&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1495128&highlight=), but Rock Band 3, released last month, appears to have failed to achieve commercial success.

"Viacom also announced that it plans to sell Harmonix, which developed the Rock Band music video game franchise," said Viacom. "Accordingly, the Company reclassified the business as a discontinued operation and has recast its results from previous periods to reflect this change."

In a question and answer session this morning, Viacom commented briefly on its plan to sell.

"We expect that [sale] to be completed expeditiously. We'll announce the results when the deal is concluded. The proceeds will go into our back account and then we'll deploy it," said the company

Official UK sales figures from UKIE revealed Rock Band 3 sold just 7386 units for the week ending 30th October in the UK.

As a result, Harmonix's tour de force spent a debut week at 26th in the UK all-formats top 40. Rival Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock finished one place below in 27th.

All this despite the game being ruddy brilliant (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-10-28-rock-band-3-review).

Earlier this year Harmonix boss Alex Rigopulos declared "I absolutely do not believe that rhythm-action gaming has reached its peak".

Viacom bought Harmonix, which used to develop Guitar Hero, four years ago for $175m. Rock Band's generated over $1 billion in revenue, but some critics suggest the music genre is dead.

UK getting Rock Band 3 MIDI Pro-Adapter

The Rock Band 3 MIDI Pro-Adapter will be released in the UK "late next week" for around £34.99 / €39.99, Mad Catz has told Eurogamer.

Mad Catz, Harmonix's official partner when it comes to Rock Band 3 accessories, said the MIDI Pro-Adapter will be available to buy from "all leading online retailers".

The PlayStation 3 and Wii version of the adapter will be released first, then the Xbox 360 version "shortly after".

The MIDI Pro-Adapter allows Rock Band 3 owners to use the Squier by Fender Stratocaster Guitar and Controller, due out in the US in March for $279.99 (around £175 / €199). The Squier is a fully functional, full-sized electric guitar with strings that doubles as a game controller for Rock Band 3's Pro mode.

The adapter also allows gamers to use "most real" MIDI keyboards and MIDI drum sets when playing the game. It plugs directly into the console via USB, converting the MIDI messages into console controller data which the game translates into on-screen action.

There's a velocity sensitive adjustment for MIDI drums, designed to reduce cross-talk during play, a full D-Pad and standard gaming controller buttons and a removable clip, which allows gamers to attach to a belt or rest on a table top or similar flat surface.

Meanwhile, Mad Catz said it was aware some Rock Band 3 owners were having trouble buying peripherals for the stunning music game. It promised 100 per cent availability from its own online store, Gameshark.

"Incidentally, we know that some folks are still finding difficulty getting hold of some instruments and accessories," a Mad Catz spokesperson told Eurogamer this evening.

"Mad Catz would like to remind gamers that we are the official partners with Harmonix and thus our webstore carries pretty much everything in the Rock Band range from software through to legacy instruments and of course the new Rock Band 3 products."

Harmonix goes independent
Breaks from Viacom and to "return to roots as an independent" studio

Rock Band and Dance Central developer Harmonix has confirmed that its break from former parent company Viacom is complete, and it's now an independent studio.

"We're happy to confirm the news today that the sale of the company is complete. We appreciate all of your support, comments and warm wishes in the preceding few weeks," said Harmonix on its forum.

"Viacom and MTV Networks have been an amazing home for us over the past 4 years. It's where we launched both Rock Band and Dance Central, worked with The Beatles, Green Day, AC/DC, The Who and thousands of other artists.

"We want to take a moment to thank everyone in that organization who helped make these awesome games possible,"it adds, which is far more pleasant that the sentiments of ex-shareholders of Harmonix, who have launched a lawsuit against Viacom (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=281215) for allegedly attempting to wriggle out of honouring performance-related bonuses.

Harmonix continues: "We're excited to be returning to our roots as an independent and privately owned studio. As for what it means for you, the DLC schedule marches on for Rock Band, we will continue our support of previously released titles and we're hard at work on some unannounced projects that we think you're going to be pumped about."

Rock Band gets Valentines song collection
Harmonix details the 'Heartache Duets' Pack coming this Friday

Harmonix is gearing up to release a new pack of downloadable songs for Rock Band 3 specifically themed for Valentines Day.

It'll be called the 'February Heartache Duets' Pack', and will arrive this Friday just in time for Valentines weekend. Contained will be a selection of songs tailored to tug on the old heart strings (or just bore blokes to tears).

Harmonix warns, however, that "the content releasing this Friday, February 11 will take the place of content that would have released Tuesday, February 15," confirming there'll be no update next week on the usual day.

Here's the full song list:

* Animotion - "Obsession"
* B.o.B. (featuring Hayley Williams) - "Airplanes"
* Bonnie Tyler - "Total Eclipse of the Heart"
* The Human League - "Don't You Want Me"
* Lady Antebellum - "Need You Now"
* Meat Loaf - "Paradise by the Dashboard Light"
* Stevie Nicks - "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around"

No Rock Band 4 this year

There will be no Rock Band 4 this year, developer Harmonix has confirmed.

Speaking in a lengthy interview with GameInformer, Harmonix exec Chris Rigopulos said that the studio had no immediate plans for a sequel, but is actively working on new concepts for the franchise.

"Rock Band 3 is a big game with lots of available music content and lots of new goals and challenges. We want to give our fans the time to explore that fully," he explained.

"But rest assured that Harmonix is still developing new ideas and concepts to advance the Rock Band franchise, and we look forward to sharing those when the time is right."

Instead of a full sequel, you'll have to make do with DLC, of which it sounds like there's plenty in the pipeline. Tracks from Foo Fighters, Lady Gaga and Ozzy Osbourne are all apparently due later this month.

Rigopulos was at pains to point out that the market for Rock Band DLC was in ruddy health, despite reports of the music genre being in terminal decline.

Nearly five million different accounts have paid for a DLC track since 2007, he revealed, with total purchases recently passing the 100 million mark.

"With all of the negative press around the band genre, you might be surprised to learn that we still see more than a million unique users log on each month to play Rock Band and to pick up new music – and it's not the same million players each month.

"Rock Band is a game that people can put down for a month to play Portal 2, or whatever new release captures their attention, and then fire up Rock Band again."

I don't think these music games lend themselves well to yearly releases, not like Shooters, Racers and Sports games.

I think the next RB we see will be Next Gen.
