Documentation obtained by Joystiq – and subsequently confirmed with two separate sources – reveals that "USB Mass Storage Device Support on Xbox 360" will soon be a reality. The document, authored by a senior software development engineer at Microsoft, states that due to "increased market penetration of high-capacity, high throughput USB mass storage devices, a 2010 Xbox 360 system update" will allow consumers to save and load game data from USB devices. The update is purportedly coming in Spring 2010.
Once the update occurs, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download Xbox Live Arcade games, Xbox Live Indie games, Games on Demand, DLC and Title Updates to the storage device. "USB storage devices may, however, have far greater memory capacity than MUs (at the date of writing, the largest MU is 512 MB), and may therefore support previously infeasible operations-such as installation of a full disc-based title." That's right, you can also store disc-based games to the USB device; however, it will require the disc to be in the tray for authentication, identical to the current functionality.
According to the document, the USB mass storage device must be at least 1GB and the system will do a compatibility check. "The system partition occupies 512 MB of space, and by default the consumer partition occupies the remainder of the device capacity, or 16 GB, whichever is smaller." Upon inserting a blank USB storage device, "consumers are offered two choices: 'Configure now' or 'Customize'." The "Configure now" option will use "the entire device capacity, up to the maximum of 512 MB plus 16 GB" meaning, regardless of the overall size of the device you're using, the Xbox will only enable 16 GB of usable, non-system storage. The "Customize" option will allow you to "preserve some pre-existing, non-console data on the device" such as music.
It should be clear by now that Microsoft is simply pulling out of the Memory Unit business and not the highly lucrative Xbox hard drive business. With an artificial cap of 16 GB – still shy of the 20 GB hard drive that shipped with the original 2005 Xbox Pro and a fraction the size of the currently shipping 120 GB hard drive – USB storage support simply removes the onerous requirement for a Memory Unit on Xbox 360 Arcade units, and brings the Xbox 360 platform a feature that's been present on the PlayStation 3 since that console's 2006 launch.
If you're intent on circumventing Microsoft's cutthroat hard drive pricing the Xbox 360, you can use two USB storage devices for a maximum of 32 GB of usable storage; however, the console "has a fixed limit of two external USB mass storage devices" regardless of whether they're "formatted for the Xbox 360 or not." If you fill all three USB ports on the console, only the first two to be connected will be recognized.
With talk of a new (slim?) form factor for the Xbox 360 picking up, and plans to abandon (or at least obviate) Memory Units underway, we're guessing those Memory Unit slots could be cut entirely from future iterations of the console.
Sounds awsome, I think the PS3 can already do this

It can.
This is the best news I've heard all week. My friend's Xbox 360 stopped accepting Memory Units a few months ago for some reason. Now I can finally play with him at his house without having to 'Recover' my profile every time. ;D
Oh wow! we can now put our gamertags on it as well, I remember the last time I tried to recover mine, I kid you not it took about 3-4 hours! :o
Man, this is LONG over due! I'm not excited about the 16GB memory cap, but I am excited to be able to to the online DL content. I currently update my PS3 by downloading the system software on my work PC and copying to a USB drive, my home wireless internet access is a bit slower than my work DSL. I really like that they are including the ability to download arcade games, something I've always wished PSN would allow.
As for the storage cap, I use a 750GB Maxtor one touch drive to store the backup data off the installed 320GB harddrive in my PS3, it only takes up about 60 GB of info, but at least I have this option available to me. I'm sure someday MS will allow this, their just milking people along the way, much like me just buying an MU, and then this news breaks.
Oh well, still glad to hear it's coming.
I have a 500gb Maxtor hard drive, but it's full of porn! ;D

20GB
120GB
250GB (currently using)
We probably won't be able to install game discs to USB drives, which is usually what takes up so much of my storage space. I'm mainly excited about the convenience of being able to make actualy "backups" of my gamesaves without the need for the Datel XPORT.

To return to topic and away from Rex's smut then read on as the USB prices have been posted:
There will be two different sizes, an 8GB and 16GB version. According to the product listing, the 8GB size will retail for $39.99, while the 16GB will retail for $69.99. The USB drives will ship on April 6, according to the listings.
Of course, if those prices sound too big for you, the new storage feature allows users to insert any 3rd party USB drive, but will only dedicate a maximum of 16GB for each.
A quick search on Newegg reveals you can grab a SanDisk 16GB stick for about $40. So why the higher cost? The GameStop listing says that Xbox 360 sticks offer "hassle-free 'plug and play' installation," meaning the user won't have to configure his or her own 3rd party drive upon inserting it into the console. But according to Microsoft, having to configure your own drive doesn't sound too difficult.

It's Neato, he's always propositioning me.
I'm sure that hassle free comment is just that if your dirve is over 16 GB, it'll either just not recognize the rest or none of it until you create a 16 gb partition or smaller (can you partition a USB drive?)
I've just got a couple of 4 GB cruzer drives that serve my needs for my office backups and the all important PS3 system updates. Can't wait until MS lets us DL addons and such over the net and install via USB drives.

Man, just when I think you've got it, your second sentence starts out wiht 'I'm' instead of 'The Neato is excited....'
I haven't heard any new news about this, I think people are so excited about this whole USB thing that they don't really think to think about anything else.
A little OT here, but on the PSN blog the next update is to be 3.21 and they say they are removing the 'other OS' option from the menu of the Fat PS3s. I for one could care less. I didn't buy a PS3 to run Linux. They say you are not forced to update, but if you don't you won't be able to get online, or modern games that require the 3.21 update won't run on your console either. Yeah, sounds like an option to me...... Don't know when that update is supposed to come out.
I used your post to create a new topic (http://360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_forum1/index.php?topic=1203.0) in the PS3 forum. :)

Official Xbox 360 USB drives priced by GameStop
(http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/03/usb-sandisk580pxwmed.jpg)
GameStop has leaked information about those official Xbox 360 USB hard drives we've heard about (first rumored and then officially), and they ain't cheap. According to the confusingly similar GameSpot (who saw the prices temporarily listed on GameStop's website), there will be both 8GB and 16GB drives available, the smaller for $39.99 and the larger for $69.99. According to Major Nelson, we'll see them in stores in May.
Of course, the system update will also allow you to use any USB drive (not just the official Xbox-branded ones), but before you get visions of 1TB of storage plugged into your Xbox, remember that there's a 16GB limit on each of two possible devices, so you can have only 32GB total. Fortunately, an unofficial 16GB flash drive is about half of Microsoft's price over on Newegg. You may have to tweak things a little bit, as the official drives are meant to be "plug and play," but it can't be that complicated. The GameStop listing is down for now, but we'll see these drives officially in just over a month or so anyway.
I hope the USB they release for xbox will also work on a MAC as well as windows

I don't understand why people think those prices are rediculous.
Sony PRO Duo 8GB (for PSP / PS3) = $39.99 MSRP
Sony PRO Duo 16GB (for PSP / PS3) = $74.99 MSRP
Nintendo / SanDisk 2GB (Wii) = $9.99 MSRP (x4 = $39.96 for 8GB)
Looks like the same price structure being used for all platforms.
Probably because WalMart puts some USB drives on clearance, like my 4GB Cruzer drives for 10 bucks.
I don't think they are out of line at all really. Probably a little better quality, which usually translates to better reliability.

I bought an 8GB USB drive on Woot.com for $10 (delivered). It even included a full version of Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway (PC).
You can always find "deals" on anything anywhere. Just because the MSRP of the Xbox USB drive is $69.99 doesn't mean I can't buy it on Amazon.com a month later for $40. MSRP is simply the "suggested retail price". ;D

Awesome stuff... I will be home in about an hour can't wait to stream all my 'movies' through my xbox ;D
Just seen this on thelostgamer site
You will have heard plenty from Microsoft about the introduction of the Flash Drive with this latest System Update, many won't be aware of a further introduction within it that has seemingly felt a little 'under the radar.' Xbox 360 owners are now able to transfer large amounts of content with a new multi-select option that allows you to specify groups of data to be copied. A handy addition considering that you used to have to copy all your Game Saves to old memory cards individually...!
I see over on xbox live they have a thread with eveyrone posting what drives do and don't work. It gets a bit wordy. Perhaps a mod could start one here and then keep the drives that do work in the first post? I got the update last night but haven't tried any drives yet.

To my understanding, the basic requirements are ...
USB 2.0 compliant
1024MB free space minimum.
I think the problem a lot of people are having is when they they buy cheapy "1GB" USB drives that actually do not have 1024MB storage. I could be wrong. I'll take a look at the xbox.com forum later.

I just read through this thread (http://forums.xbox.com/32040245/ShowPost.aspx) (which I think is what Racer was referring to). It seems that ALL drives tested so far work. One poster said his SanDisk 4GB Cruzer didn't work, but another said his did. Most likely the first poster's drive was simply damaged.
