Title: 'F**K ME' Moments in Gaming
Post by: GamerMan316 on April 17, 2010, 05:43:29 PM
Just seen this on the koku gamer site and thought it would be cool to see what gaming moments we've had that have made us go F**k me!!!   :)

As an interactive art, gaming has the ability to cause passionate personal investment. And thanks to the magic of Youtube, we've all seen fans run the gamut of emotions, from elation  to total meltdown. But when it comes to the feelings inspired by the stuff we play, there's none as unique as the "f*ck Me!" moment.

Somewhere between excitement and exasperation, it's that adrenaline-filled split second after an epic challenge presents itself, and before we dive in to face it. And in true gaming fashion, these moments are followed by some of the most inspiring, and irritating memories a gamer can have. So without further adieu, here are five of gaming's ubiquitous "f*ck Me!" moments:

5. Super Metroid (SNES): Escape from Zebes

Part of what makes "f*ck Me!" moment what it is, is the sudden and crushing realization that the epic (and epically difficult) trial you just surmounted isn't the end of your worries. It's only fitting then that Super Metroid's classic "surprise" ending kick off the list. After a tough-as-nails trip to Mother Brain's chamber, you're charged with guiding Samus Aaron through a climactic showdown that brings you to the brink of death and back again, before blasting your way to victory with one of the coolest weapons in video game history. But rather than give you catharis, Super Metroid takes advantage of the typical end-of-game-calm by keeping you in control Samus Aran as the planet's self-destruct mechanism goes into action. What follows is a tense and frenzied rush through the game's entire map that will surely have you saying, "f*ck Me!"

4. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2): The Final Battle (but let's be honest, all of them, really)

Shadow of the Colossus practically is one big "f*ck Me!" moment, in the best way possible. As a game that redefined the concept of the boss battle, and turned scenery and combat into one breathtaking experience, it forces you to double take before, during, and after every fight, as you get caught between admiring the artistry of the experience and struggling to comprehend and defeat each of the towering Colossi. When it comes to these moments, this game is a smörgåsbord that lets you take your pick, from the lumbering, indifferent Colossus # 1 that you can't imagine approaching, to the final Colossus, that you can't imagine defeating. After struggling to get near it while it hurls debris down at you, this sixteenth and final boss is introduced in a moment that will take the "f*ck Me" right out of your mouth.

3. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Multiplatform): Through the Fire and Flames (Expert)

The Guitar Hero series is undoubtedly filled with punishingly hard songs, but I would argue that none scream "f*ck Me!" quite as much as TtFaF. Given to you as a "reward" for beating career mode, the DragonForce hit is an empowering enough song to jam out to on easy and medium difficulties. It's when you crank the game up to hard, and especially expert, that this power ballad becomes a masochistic trip into the fieriest circle of hell. Filled with wall after wall of the hardest virtual chords known to man, it even teases you with brief moments of respite between one satanic wave of notes and the next. It's the kind of song that's so hard it has players and watchers alike staring in disbelief and dismay when it starts to ramp up.

2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3): Rude Awakening

I would be remiss to leave this series off my list, as it pretty much makes its name off of cinematic moments that have you saying "f*ck Me!" out everything from amazement to frustration to disbelief. In the fashion of Naughty Dog's groundbreaking first installment (only on style steroids), Among Thieves opens on a heart-pounding note that will cause you to say "f*ck Me!" out of sheer appreciation for what they've come up with, only to throw you into the fray so you can sit on the edge of your seat trying to control Nathan Drake out of his stickiest situation yet. In the same vein as Shadow of the Colossus, this opening scene will have you caught between wondering how the developers did it (and what they could possibly do next), and how you're going to get through the moment alive.

1. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii): "Thank You, But Our Princess is in Another Castle"

As New Super Mario Bros Wii. progresses, it piles on one "f*ck Me!" inducing moment after another, while it pushes you to employ all the skills you've acquired during your years in the Mushroom Kingdom making it from one end of the level to another (and that's before considering the idea of getting the star-coins). As a culmination of all the ill-placed gaps, flying projectiles, and spiked enemies, Bowser's Castle proves to be a fittingly hard level followed by a seemingly easy final battle...that is, until Magikoopa flips you the bird and Giga-sizes Bowsers for what turns out to be the most unique ending to a Mario title yet. The downside? It will have you frantically keeping your footing as you wonder if the level will ever end, muttering a "f*ck Me!" or two under your breath along the way. Oh, and then there's World Nine...

Now this list doesn't represent a top five, but rather five moments that have brought a "f*ck Me" to my lips during my past and present gaming history. But arguably, there are as many reactions to games as there are gamers, so to speak, and a "f*ck Me!" moment to me isn't necessarily one to you. So that being said, let's hear it! Dig deep and think about the moments that grind your gears as much as they impress you.

What are your biggest "f*ck Me!" moments in gaming, past or present?

Keeping it on the 360:

1.) The opening cinematic battle in Lost Odyssey was breath taking.
2.) The final boss fight on Ninja Gaiden..."won't this fucker ever die" was something shouted quite often
