Does anyone know of a good free anti virus software?
Only,Chas's got his laptop back from being repaired last weekand his current one had run out.
Don't fancy paying out another £30.00 for one,so I know there's a few out there,but which one?
I know there are a few techy's here,so any help please!
I use AVG's free anti-virus sotware. Just does the basics, but it's good enough for me.
free.avg.com
I've used AVG for years, never had any problems.

Nice one,thanks.Will try it out.
I have to admit I use the microsoft one which is free and not bad at all. Runs in the background well and only a tiny (almost unnoticeable) slowdown when updating and scanning.
Both AVG and the Microsoft one are pretty good.
I prefer to use the Microsoft Windows Defender, but at the moment my Windows XP is a little... shall we say, less than legit? So instead I am using AVG and I have no complaints.
we use Avast

Avast is a good anti-virus product too, I know plenty of people that use it.

I ripped the new copy of Norton for Mac let me know if you want it for Windows I'll upload it onto Rapidshare tonight... comes with a key already so no need to worry about finding one
I got Norton for free when I got broadband, very good software but hogged my memory and took about 12GB of my hard drive just for bloody virus definitions.

You can now obtain legit XP keys from Microsoft for free. Just follow the "Registration by phone" steps and when asked how many computer is currently installed with this version of XP, enter 2 or less.
I've used the same XP disc on over 10 computers, all of which have legit keys from Microsoft.

I've been using Avast for about 2 years. Hands-down the best overall security I've ever found for free.
BONUS: It uses for low resources, so it doesn't slow down your PC like many others do.

Norton is poo. It (ironically) infects your computer by integrating itself firmly into the registry. Sort of like AOL (America Online) software ... ugh.
Trying to uninstal Norton from a PC is one of the most difficult tasks I've ever had to do.

I remember uninstalling Norton from my previous XP Laptop, having to download more software just to uninstall it a bit dodgy, glad I got rid of it though, the laptop ran a hell of a lot better once it had gone.
To Sarge, my recommendation:
- Uninstall any antivirus programs currently installed on the computer.
- Download, install and run Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) which will sweep your computer for any hazards and repair them, so you won't end up installing new antivirus software on top of a corrupt system (which is bad).
- Register, download and install Free Avast (http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download).
- Lastly, go to http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm (http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm)
. Click on
FULL SERVICE SCAN at the bottom of the page. Click on
CUSTOMIZE under Complete Scan. Uncheck (blank) everything under
PROTECTION and checkmark everything else. Run the scan. This will check various things that were missed (or caused) by the previous steps.
[/list]
After you've done everything above, you can nickname Chas's computer "THE ROCK". ;)

That's sort of the catch. Chances are there are still remnants of idle Norton software still installed on your computer. In order to fully remove Norton from a computer, you have to manually edit (or remove) 20+ registry entries which can get a bit tricky and dangerous.
Norton scares me. :(
I don't have the laptop anymore so it's not an issue, the laptop i've got now which i've had for around 9 months has had AVG since day one so I know it's fine.
Thank, Jeebus! :D

The reason why people say that is people don't make and gear viruses for MAC but they do exist so it's always better to be safe than sorry, ecspecially if your like me and occasionally search for porn ;D
"occasionally"
;)
occasionally ..... that made me spit coffee >_< lolz

Thanks for the tip. I am a member of the MSDN through my school, so I could get Windows 7 (and will) for free once I stop being lazy and take the time to do so.
Just to update you all,I had to take his laptop to PC world in the end because it was infected with a mailware thingy and I just havn't got the knowledge to get around it.It would'nt let me do anything!
Anyway, all done now and as I had a Norton 2010 (bought for £22.97 in Tesco),put that on there.
Thanks forall your help and advice.Just got to get him to stop downloading crap and clicking on anything that pop's upon screen. And yes,I've disabled pop ups before you tell me. ;)
