If I ever get a PS3 then this'll be on or near the top of my 'to buy' list. Sadly, doesn't seem like that'll be happening any time soon. Although I desperately want to play MGS4. >:C

Gran Turismo 5 'could be PS4 game'
Polyphony boss says title "goes beyond PS3"

There is hyperbole, and then there is confidence in the the most patiently-awaited game of the 21st Century.

Take your pick on which applies to Polyphony Digital boss Kaz Yamauchi, who told OPM in its splendid new issue:

"The level of precision we've achieved [in GT5] is actually more suited to the next generation of machines."

Wowsers. He didn't stop there, either. Referring to the 200 'premium' cars offered within the title, Yamauchi added:

"The detail that goes into a premium model [has] gone beyond the level of the current PlayStation."

Yep, you read that correctly. It's TOO MUCH FOR PS3.

To be fair, Yamauchi may have something of a point. OPM reports that 'GT5 accurately models mechanical and cosmetic damage to an absurd degree, and whilst the classic models will buckle and crumple, those newer models will near-disintegrate'.

If you're a racing fan, November 2 can't come soon enough.

Until then, check out OPM's spanking six-page GT5 preview in its latest issue, which hits stores this week.

Europe's GT5 Collector's Edition Is Ridiculously Expensive

Sony has revealed a Gran Turismo 5 collector's edition that is even more elaborate than the American one. It's a lot more expensive, too.

You get the following:

    * Metal sculpted box finished in SLS AMG Obsidian Black
    * Exclusive GT branded SLS AMG 1:43 model car
    * GT leather wallet containing Signature Edition competition entry card
    * Branded USB key with Polyphony/Mercedes-Benz trailer
    * GT branded metal key fob
    * Signature Edition coffee table book featuring the beautiful cars and locations of Gran Turismo 5
    * 200 page Apex drivers magazine with hints on driving technique, car tuning, future technologies and more

Along with that, you'll also get a number of exclusive in-game vehicles. Which is a lot! And it'll cost you, with the pack running to €180. That's not a typo. That's €180. Or £150. Or USD$240.

A "cheaper" collector's edition will sell for €80, and include the game, Apex magazine, art cards and in-game vehicles.

Gran Turismo 5: Every mode detailed
Two career modes, track editor, My Lounge, kart racing and more

Let's get excited. Polyphony has unleashed what looks like a complete run-down on everything to expect from its stunning-looking racer, Gran Turismo 5, come this November 3 when it's released.

First up are TWO single-player career modes; A-Spec, which lets you play as the driver and win races to move up the ranks, and B-Spec, which places you in the shoes of the Team Director, "and your job is to study the competition and properly play to your driver's strengths to come out on top."

The guide also shows off the garage, where any of your up to 1000+ cars that you gather will live, and offers a glimpse at the car editing and modification screens.

Then there's the Course Maker, which lets you design your own courses with a simple editing tool.

You can also sink your teeth into a go-kart mode (as one of these FIVE recent videos show (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=260793)), which Sony says is the perfect place for beginners to brush up on the theory of racing and improve their driving skills before moving on to the big toys.

There's a much more detailed breakdown of these modes, with screenshots, on the official site (link below).

It's okay to be jittering in your seat with excitement.

PS3 "still not enough" for GT - Yamauchi

Gran Turismo creator Kaz Yamauchi reckons the long-awaited fifth game in the series – still without an official release date – was restricted by the capacity of the PlayStation 3.

Don't be shocked - the Polyphony boss reckons every PlayStation he has worked on has "restricted" him, including the PS3.

"Software has to be created under the restriction of the hardware," he told the latest issue of Esquire UK.

"With each new PlayStation, the vessel has become bigger, but it's still not enough.

"With Gran Turismo 5 we've made it as clean and beautiful as possible within the confines of the space we're given - but of course there's a lot more that we want to put in."

Amazing scenes. At this point we expect Gran Turismo 5 to bring peace to the world and end poverty when it's eventually released, which, by the way, Sony says will be before Christmas.

Last week Yamauchi revealed that work on the next instalment, Gran Turismo 6, had already begun.

"It's not something that we can talk that lightly on," he said. "It took 2000 days to get all the ideas that went into GT5.

"It's just too early to be talking about GT6."

2000 days is five-and-a-half years, by the way.

Kaz Yamauchi is Peter Molyneux's Japanese doppelganger.

They should work on a game together.  They could call it Divide By Zero.

GT5 installs while played - Sony

You don't have to wait the best part of an hour for Gran Turismo 5 to install - you can opt for the game to unpack chunks as you play, Sony explained this afternoon.

"GT5 gives users the option of an install," Sony pointed out. "This makes loading times throughout much faster but is not a requirement when first playing.

"If users choose not to install the data straight away it will do it in stages as news areas, tracks, etc. are accessed during normal gameplay."

Eurogamer has been independently informed that the 6.4GB optional hard-drive install for Gran Turismo 5 checks out - it's correct. To do this takes 40 minutes or more.

Optional installs are uncommon on PS3, and at 6.4GB that's one of the largest we've seen. Other beefy PS3 contenders are EndWar and Devil May Cry (both around 5GB), or BioShock 2 and Lost Planet 2 (both roughly 4.5GB).

Mind you, Gran Turismo 5 has 1031 cars, which translates to an overwhelming list that Eurogamer reproduced in full (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-12-gt5-a-list-of-1031-cars).

GT5's £400 official steering wheel

Thrustmaster has unveiled the £400 official steering wheel for PlayStation 3-exclusive simulation racer Gran Turismo 5.

The T500 RS wheel and pedal set is said to be optimised for GT5. The wheel weighs 4.6kg; the pedal set 7.3kg. The gearshift levers, the wheel's central spokes section (30cm in diameter) and the pedal set are all entirely metal.

The wheel itself offers 1080° rotation. A motorized stop means the three full turns are adjustable. The magnetic sensor-based H.E.A.R.T (HallEffect AccuRate Technology) is incorporated into the wheel's steering mechanism. The wheel has 16-bit resolution and 65536 values on its steering axis.

The spacing and height of the pedal set is also fully adjustable, and allows for two driving positions: floor-mounted F1 style, or suspended GT style.

There's even a textured foot rest, also metal. The Force Feedback mechanism is "vigorous, fast-acting and extremely responsive". An independent gear stick will be available to buy in the coming months.

"The goal that I set for the Thrustmaster team was to design for me the most precise wheel ever developed, without any latency – to accurately reproduce the sensations of GT5, and let users truly feel the emotions experienced by drivers on real racing circuits," said Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi.

The T500 RS launches in Europe and North America on 5th January, and in Japan on 25th January. It carries a suggested retail price of €499.99 (VAT included), which works out at around £425.
