WB's new 'Mortal Kombat' tests our might in 2011
Warner Bros. announced a new Mortal Kombat game this morning, and Seven of Nine is nowhere to be found. The game, called simply Mortal Kombat, appears to be a return to the classic Mortal Kombat 2/3 style of gameplay -- extremely quick, 2D fighting -- which has been given a fresh coat of 3D paint and a very noticeable 60 frames-per-second framerate. It also features a man being sliced open at the groin with a spinning hat.
It adds a new tag team mode for up to four players, allowing teams to play through a "co-op arcade mode" or compete online against other pairs of e-murderers.
The game is being developed by Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon and NetherRealm Studios (the former WB Games Chicago) and is slated for launch on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2011.

Naturally you would beat me to the chase :D
MK will always be near and dear to my heart... But frankly the series has been behind the Fighter game curve for nearly a decade.
And while I have to give them major kudos for putting actual gameplay in their teaser trailer, there isn't anything in there that doesn't look like business as usual for MK.
The only change up that I can see is some kind of tag team system. Like I said, ten years behind the curve.
Honestly, after seeing that I'm kind of stoked. It seems like they are really embracing a lot of tried and true Japanese 2D fighter mechanics, and while that isn't super innovative, it is still a good thing. Couple that stuff with the classic MK flair and the very clean and well done production values that they always have, and I think you have a real contender here.

I could not agree more.
I saw this on Ed Boon's Twitter and thought it was kind of funny.

If this is anything like the god awful MK/DC game i'll be staying well away, or i'll just rent it. :)
Warner Bros has revealed the latest two fighters to join Mortal Kombat's cast - Kitana and Cyrax.
With the series reboot featuring a cast that has a distinctly old-skool flavour to it, it's no surprise to see the return of Kitana (Mortal Kombat 2) and Cyrax (Mortal Kombat 3).
Of course they are in it. You can't have Mileena and Sektor in it without having Kitana and Cyrax now, can you?

Goro and Jade heading to Mortal Kombat
(http://assets.vg247.com/current//2011/01/goro.jpg)
Jade and Goro have both made it into this year's version of Mortal Kombat, according to a preview in US magazine Game Informer.
Goro is seen prancing around his Goro's Lair stage (thanks Mortal Kombat Online (http://www.mortalkombatonline.com/content/News/read.cds?article=1327)), while Jade apparently has her trademark boomerang projectile and is trussed up in a mixture of her Ultimate MK3 and MK Deception outfits. Snazzy.
That means we now know of 18 playable characters in the NetherRealm-developed beat-'em-up revamp – as well as Goro and Jade, we're to expect Scorpion, Sonya Blade, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Shao Khan, Kitana, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, Jax, Reptile, Mileena, Cyrax, Ermac, Nightwolf, Sektor and Sindel.
Developer Ed Boon reportedly said there are no current plans for an Xbox 360-exclusive character (the PlayStation 3 has Kratos as a 19th character, unveiled during December's VGAs). However, he mentioned downloadable content in his answer, suggesting that we may see more characters introduced that way.
Mortal Kombat is due out for PS3 and Xbox 360 this April.
I won't be buying this new, but if the reviews are good i will definitely be buying it at some point. I love the MK series and i been playing em since they came out. just a shame i am so crap. No matter what i do i simply cannot defeat the last boss on UMK3 on the 360!!
The DC game was god awful so this will be a rental for me.

'tis true.
Taking the M rating from Mortal Kombat makes it Ortal Kobat. And we can all agree that is not Mortal Kombat.
Give it a Teen rating and that makes Tortal Kotbat.
good job there is a CH rating ...
I didn't mind MK vs DC. Sure, it lacked a bit of the MK flair (and MK is, after all, almost completely flair at this point), but it had the best fighting mechanics since the series went 3D.
F, D, D, F, A, A, A ........ Fatality!
Hot.

Meanwhile, two downloadable characters have been confirmed.
Scans of the May issue of US magazine Gamepro reveals the first two DLC characters, the Lady in Red (known as Scarlet by the Mortal Kombat community), and blind samurai Kenshi from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.
Four-armed monster Kintaro was also rumoured to be a DLC character, although developer NetherRealm Studios has denied this.
The emergence of the DLC characters ahead of the game's release sparked anger from some gamers, but in a tweet Mortal Kombat head honcho Ed Boon said, " DLC characters are NOT on the disc."

That was my favorite character. None of my friends ever used him, so no one knew how to defend against him. Plus ... "blind samurai" ... what's not awesome about that?
They have my man Kabal, so I'm happy.
Rumour: Mortal Kombat to get online pass
Alleged leaked emails reveal strike against preowned sales
THQ is poised to plant another flying Bicycle kick square in the teeth of the second-hand games market, if anonymous "tipsters" are to be believed. According to a leaked internal email, the next Mortal Kombat will ship with a one-time-use passcode for online play.
If you don't have a code, you'll get a two-day free trial of the online modes before Warner Bros asks you to stump up 800 MSP. The publisher is said to have similar plans in mind for upcoming survival horror shooter F.E.A.R. 3.
Here's an excerpt from the email, published by Joystiq:
Mortal Kombat, available on April 19 for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, includes a one-time-use registration code that gives players access to all online modes in the game. Players who do not have a code will get a free two-day trial of the online play and then be able to purchase the online modes for 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and $9.99 on the PlayStation Network.
While online passcodes are an increasingly familiar quantity, thanks to the firm endorsements of EA and THQ, Warner Bros' spin on things is a little more sinister. Joystiq claims no reference to the code will appear on the game's packaging, though retailers will be filled in on how and where to obtain a new one.
If true, the news is an unfortunate scratch in the polish of a rather promising-looking game. We've contacted Warner for comment. Mortal Kombat kung-fu kicks shelves on 19th April.
Well that stinks.

'Tis the future, sadly.
On the bright side, retail is going the way of the dodo. Digital distro is coming to consoles, and assuming they allow the same competition as the PC market has, that means huge deals. of course, that is a big assumption, considering Microsoft hasn't given up an inch of their deathgrip on Xbox digital distribution, which is why it costs $40 to download a two year old game off of the Xbox On Demand service. Still, PS3 is getting Steam, maybe that will force Microsoft to open up as well.

Since they're using their own in-game Avatars instead of Xbox Live Avatars, I wonder if the Avatars will be able to do M-rated actions? ;D

Mortal Kombaaaaatt is apparantly Pretty Gooood (http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/mortal-kombat)!
Or so sayeth the reviewers who, via Metacritic, are giving the game an 86 average. That average is taken from 17 reviews. For komparison, Marvel Vs Kapcom 3 earned an 85 average from 76 different kritiks.
Giant Bomb in partikular gave Mortal Kombat a perfekt 5/5 (they gave MvC3 a 4/5).

And by that I mean I go to local arcades and punch people playing the old UMK3 machine (and then run away).

Prepare For a New Kombatant: Skarlet
Boon explains Mortal Kombat Krueger DLCMortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has explained the decision to offer horror icon Freddy Krueger as a DLC fighter.
Speaking to the PlayStation Blog, Boon revealed that he and his team had wanted to add an additional "unexpected" guest character to the game alongside God of War's Kratos and Krueger seemed like a great fit for the franchise.
"It's kind of hard to choose a character who would fit well into the Mortal Kombat universe, with the blood and violence that's so associated with it. Kratos from God of War is a brutal, bloody character, so he makes sense," he explained.
"When we had the discussions about the DLC characters, we knew that we wanted to add a returning character, a new character, but also a guest character. That was one of the goals right from the beginning.
"A number of names were run by us: Jason, Michael Myers and all those guys. Freddy Kreuger, we felt, was the most instantly recognisable and he fits in with Mortal Kombat with his claws. It just seemed like the best fit."
He went on to explain that this wasn't the first time in the series history that the idea of adding a famous horror icon had been kicked around.
"Over the years, we've certainly had a number of conversations about guest characters. At one point, we had a conversation about having a group â€" imagine Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre â€" of all these killers from the '80s and '90s flicks come in as a group of characters.
"We never got a grip on how we would do it, whether they'd be DLC characters or what. But yes, we've had lots of conversations over the years.
"We also wanted to introduce a character who was unexpected. This DLC thing opens the doors to realising these ideas."
Check out the trailer below to see the scourge of Elm Street in action.
You'll be able to get your hands on Krueger from 9th August, priced at 400 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live Marketplace or £3.19 on PlayStation Network.
