Title: [July 8 2010] New Site Discussion
Post by: nCogNeato on July 08, 2010, 02:21:29 PM
I've started exploring the backend (that's what she said) and playing around with site ideas in my spare time.

I hope to eventuallly integrate the front page with the forum so you are not required to have 2 separate logins.  This will make things a lot less confusing and hopefully more welcoming to new members and guests.

Until I figure out how to do this I have routed our main URL (360fahrenheit.com (http://360fahrenheit.com)) directly to the forum, which is where we live anyway.

If you would like to visit the old front page CLICK HERE (http://360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_joomla).

If you experience any site issues or have any suggestions, please post them here.   :)

I suggest a clear hierarchy of moderators, i know it's against our genereal community nature to conform to a structure. Just look at our game nights. I think a clearer sense of who's responsible for what etc might help newer members. Perhaps people could be 'lumbered' with specific jobs craig; news and say Rex for 'initiation' :P :P

Some sort of advertising/recruiting program and a better way to handle game nights.

Bring back Sunday Horde!

If i think of anything else ...

Just spotted that since you've removed the frontpage the most users online ever has gone from 11 or whatever it was to 30 and we currently have 7 users online (about usual) and 7 guests (not the norm).

A good thing ?

I think so.  More traffic = more new members.

Before, a lot of visitors would visit 360fahrenheit.com and get lost on that front page and never make it to the forum.  If you don't see the forum, 360DF looks like a dead community.

I'm not reallly sure where to post this, so I'll just post it here.

While digging through the backend of our site, I discovered the answer to a little mystery that's been brought up a few times over the past few months.

The mystery:  "Why are guests printing old threads from our forum?"
The answer:  Google (and maybe other search engines) has indexed the PRINT version of some of our public threads.  So when someone uses Google to look for information on Kingdom Hearts, they may end up HERE (http://360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_forum1/index.php?action=printpage;topic=1340.0).  They're not actually printing anything, they're just reading the PRINT version of a thread.

I thought that was interesting, since it's confused me for so long.  In time maybe I can figure out how to manipulate search indexing to our advantage.  I'm coming to realize how much I don't know about the internet.    ;D

Failed is putting together a master list of multiplayer games for Game Nights.  Be sure to post your collection THERE (http://360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_forum1/index.php?topic=1438.0).

I've been exploring the possibility of integrating an official games database for all members.  Something that would make it easy to cross reference eachother's game collections so you can find someone to play a certain game with.  It may not be neccessary now, but as time passes and our population grows, it may become neccessary.

In the meantime, GO HERE (http://360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_forum1/index.php?topic=1438.0) and give a list of multiplayer games you own to make organizing Game Nights a little easier.

It'll cull the need to suggest us playing say Lost Planet when i can look and see only a few people own it. We can stick to games where we'll have a high turn out or 2 games with reasonable turn outs and everyone has a chance to play.

I've been making a lot of structural changes to the site.  Some changes you will notice, most you won't.

I've given access to the entire forum to all members.  Those of you with less than 1000 posts may now see some new areas of the forum you hadn't seen before.  Have fun!

Since the site is customized to each member, you may see some glitches or errors that others may not.  If you do see anything weird on the site (besides Failed) let me know.

I have created the official 360° Fahrenheit Community Gamertag (http://360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_forum1/index.php?topic=1445.0).  Add it today!

If any of you still have x360fahrenheitx (http://live.xbox.com/member/x360fahrenheitx), xFahrenheit360x (http://live.xbox.com/member/xFahrenheit360x), or o360Fahrenheit (http://live.xbox.com/member/o360fahrenheit) on your Xbox Live friendlist, feel free to remove them.  These were previous attempts over the past few years to create a universal Community Gamertag, but are no longer functional.

Sometime in the near future I may rollout some new designs for the site.  I'll post examples beforehand so everyone can vote.

But before I can do that, I'm going to do a lot of trimming in the forum.  I've merged the INTRODUCE YOURSELF and POST YOUR GAMERTAG sections to make the whole thing more streamlined.  I'll be doing similar things as time allows.

In case you're worried, I will not be deleting anything.  Out-of-place threads will be moved.  Similar threads will be merged.  Old irrelevant threads will be locked.  But nothing will be deleted.

So if you can't find a certain topic, please use the search button (http://360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_forum1/index.php?action=search;advanced).  If you still can't find what you're looking for, feel free to PM me and I'll link you in the right direction.

There seems to be some issues with the forum's "permission" settings.  I am currently working out the kinks.  So if anyone experiences any problems (like not being able to post), don't be alarmed.  It's only temporary.

If a problem lasts longer than a few hours, post here.  If you're unable to post, you can PM me or send an email to webmaster@360fahrenheit.com.

Nothing seems to be broken so far, so I'm going to leave it alone for now.  There are still some security concerns I need to remedy (casino sites anyone?).  I have some ideas, but in fear of breaking something I'll wait until later tonight to test my theories.

That is one great advantage to our time differences.  I'm still awake while most of the site's traffic is in bed.   ;)

Speaking of which, I'd like everyone to know that I'm aware of the spam accounts that are in our Members List.

Over the past week I've been testing new ways to tighten our security, while still opening our site to new members.  It's a tricky thing, but I think I've finally found a good balance.

Spam "bots" will likely no longer be a problem, but human spammers are still a possible annoyance.  The only real answer to human spammers is manipulating IP / Domain filters, and of course time.  So keep reporting those spam posts if you see any.   8)

I will be sending a 'newsletter' of sorts to members that haven't posted, or haven't posted in a long time.  But before I do that, there are more immediate site maintenance tasks that I need to focus on.

Anyone else find it frustrating that the main site is sort of seperate from the forums? Without reinstalling the site from scratch and starting with an intergrated forum, there's not really an easy work around unfortunately. I did have one idea though an that was to use a wrapper. The wrapper basically allows one webpage to be shown inside another the same way that iframe does. With this in mind I just knocked up a quick wrapper for the forum. You guys can test it out by going to the home page http://360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_joomla/ and clicking the 'forum wrapper' link :

Unfortunately it won't display with the same dimensions as normal as the Joomla template of the main site is fixed width. If we were to change the template to a fluid width one we may be able to increase the width of the forum within it.
Anyway, let me know what you think?

tis too small for my taste, you'd have to jam the contents bar across the far left or right at the top and then make the right hand section disappear, so it's all just forum and little bit of front page either on the left or the top.

I like the front page, i like the chat box and the reviews and news getting front page as it were. So perhaps have contents and the chat box on the top of the page with everything else below it the forum.

That'd be good, involves a lot of work though. I suspect he will have to merge the 2 mysql databases into 1.  Possible but problematic.
With regards to the forum looking too small within the main site, that could be fixed by changing the theme to fluid width theme. Fluid width themes change to whatever resolution each person is viewing on.
Anyway, no biggie, just trying to help.

no that's great, it has to be done. Someones gotta make both the front page and the forums work together. Most people head straight to the forums, that sort of makes the frontpage redundant.... if it's there in the corner more people will just gravitate towards it after they have spammed their hearts out.

As far as i'm aware, this is a community and not a clan, there are no leaders as far as i'm concerned, theres people that do more work than others, people who dedicate their time to bring you the latest news, get people to turn up to game nights, get new people to turn up and generally make sure sh*t doesn't explode.

TJ used to make everything work, recruit, do game nights, sort people out and make sh*t NOT EXPLODE. No wonder she left doing all that sh*t, i sometimes lack the enthuiasm to write a game night post because i know even if 20 people say they'll turn up i can struggle to get 8 playing, i'd hate to have to recruit, make the site work and mollycoddle people who weren't happy with whatver new stuff that was happening.

TJ made it all happen, not always alone, she's got a great comunity that has helped her, but she's stepped down now and just wants to be a regular member without the responsibility. The people who are 'circling like vultures' are trying to make sure her great work and legacy stays put, so we can all enjoy the benefits of our great community.

I have the upmost respect, love and loyalty to TJ for what she has done (as alot of you have), but it could have all easily died when she stepped down and everyone has done a great job of trying to keep TJ's community alive and well. Stop being so shortsighted about people trying to help make sure this place stays with us for many more years.

As sexy as the notion of "conspiracies" are, they're usually not reality.

With respect to TJ's privacy, I think it would be best to not speculate and exchange personal conversations we may have had with her.  If anyone would like to ask TJ a question directly, she can still be reached on Xbox Live.

TJ gave everyone advance notice of wanting to step down as the site owner.  TJ sent out a mass Xbox Live message explaining she wants to take a break for online gaming.

We're all adults with personal lives and responsibilities to tend to.  Everything we do here is voluntary and free-of-charge (well ... except for the site owner   :P).  There are no obligations to any of our members.  We're a community.  We're here when you are, and we'll be here if you leave and wish to return.

If you can no longer make personal decisions without the inclusion of the community, it's no longer a community - it's a clan.  That's precisely what TJ created 360° Fahrenheit to avoid.  That's precisely why I volunteered to keep it alive, rather than see it be shut down.

We're less than 3 weeks into 360° Fahrenheit v3.0.  There have been temporary changes and new ideas thrown around.  That's not an indication of people trying to tear the community apart.  That's an indication that people care enough about the community that they want to see it flourish.  To be honest, following the response & feedback over the past few weeks, I could not be more proud to be a part of this great group of people.

I've said it before, 360° Fahrenheit is a democracy, and any permanent changes will be decided by the community.  I always welcome your feedback.  If you like something, let me know.  If you hate something, let me know.  That's the point of being a community.   :)

Before taking the helm, I promised TJ I would keep the community alive in her absence.  I promised she will always be welcome to resume control whenever she wanted.  Until that day comes, I'm going to do my best to not burn down the house.  And with everyone's help, maybe I won't.   ;)

... back on topic :D ...

Bobbus, the 'wrapper' is a good idea.  It sort of accomplishes what I want to do, but still requires users to have 2 separate logins.

I've researched a 'bridge' between SMF and Joomla, but unfortunately there has not been an officially supported bridge for a while.

The 2 options I gave myself was
     1.  Dump SMF and rebuild a forum compatible with Joomla.
     2.  Dump Joomla and rebuild a front page compatible with SMF.

Since the forum makes up 90% of our community's home, I've been leaning towards SMF's favor.  There are even a number of mods and feature packages that expand the capabilities of SMF to function as more than just a forum.  I've played around with some, but haven't had enough time to consider any permenant possibilities.

TJ did a fantastic job using Joomla and SMF to build us a new home when we desperately needed one.  I do not think it was TJ's intention to not improve it, but as the community (and TJ's family) grew and time passed, it became increasingly more difficult to make many changes.

Keep the great feedback coming, Bobbus.  I always welcome new ideas.
Title: Re: 360° Fahrenheit v3.0 - Discuss Here
Post by: bobbus74 on July 26, 2010, 10:31:26 PM
Firstly, I'm sorry if I am deamed one of the 'vultures', that's really not my intention. I was just trying out an idea and gathering feedback. You guys have created a decent community here and I was just offering my ideas to help sustain and possibly improve it. TJ has as many of you say started something good here and I wasn't trying to detract from that, merely offer a possible solution to a problem.

Secondly, Neato - I think you're right to go down the SMF path as that will definitely be simpler and less problematic going forward. Like you say, there are plenty of mods and portals etc that could expand the possibilities of the site. If you want I could set up a test SMF forum to play around with. We could let everyone test stuff on there and gather feedback. If members like a certain add-on or mod then we could incorperate it into the main site.

Quick suggestion - now we have a few new members kicking about is it worth locking 'Games Night' threads after a set amount of time?

We've seen lately that old threads for games nights have been re-kindled when it would make more sense to start a new more current thread.

Just an idea and thought I throw it out for discussion.

I know what you mean, that its good for new members to read through the old stuff but is it a good thing that they post about an old and dead co-op gaming night?

not sure what the answer is (yet) but the threads need to encourage participation whilst not getting hopes up of a co-op session on 'XYZ' if its a dead thread.

yes if they need coop, then they should start a new thread. I locked MW2 spec ops, neato sorted the other thread about Halo Legend, Wars and UT3.

I think UT3 and Halo Wars will head down pretty quick, Legendary might happen though.

Title: Re: 360° Fahrenheit v3.0 - Discuss Here

I think I got the chat sorted.

Even though the chatroom was working, there was some remnant 'glitched' code that I feared would eventually cause a problem.  Everything is clean and it looks like it's running smooth.

With the fix, you'll notice the # of users in the chatroom is now displayed next to the CHAT button in the top toolbar.  Example - CHAT (6).

The chatroom is always on, so what you say in it stays there for up to 3 days or 50 messages, whichever comes first.  Think of it as a sort of ShoutBox on steroids.

As always, if you run into any errors/glitches/WTF's, post here and let me know.  Don't clutter up other threads with technical site discussions.

... ok ...   :-\

I think I figured it out.  I believe the cookie manipulation I did to the site in order to help people with the 'unread messages' (http://360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_forum1/index.php?topic=1446.0) issue a few weeks ago seemed to prevent people from actually loading the site's new features.

The solution:
I've temporarily disabled global cookie storage.  This means that when you visit the site, instead of pulling up a cached version of the site, your web browser will download the new version of the site.

If you don't see the CHAT button, log out of the forum, then delete all of your temporary internet files (cache) from your web browser.

This also means that the 'unread messages' issue may start up again.  To be safe, I'll keep global cookies disabled until everyone confirms they can use the CHAT button.  Then I'll reactivate them to prevent the 'unread messages' issue from continuing.

EDIT:  Playing around with the server, it looks like the fix may not be instant for some.  If you've followed the directions above, but still don't see the CHAT button, give it 48 hours to sort itself out.  In the meantime, you can go directly into the chatroom here:  http://www.360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_forum1/chat/.

One of the changes I made ended up resetting everyone's personal options.

Check your profile PROFILE (http://360fahrenheit.com/fahrenh1_forum1/index.php?action=profile) and make sure your "Look and Layout Preferences" are set the way you like.

If any of you guys are still not seeing the Chat link, try refreshing your browsers (hold Ctrl and press F5). That might sort it.

Just wondering - and this may have been answered somewhere, if it has, advanced apologies; but I wasn't able to find it via a search -

Is there any sort of [spoiler] tag implemented into the forums?

Not right now.  This summer I'll be upgrading our site to a newer version of SMF, along with some added features like [spoiler] tags.  Thanks for the reminder.   :)

Last year when I released my first round of updates, I did add a shoutbox for roughly 1 hour.  It ended up crashing the forum and I had to resurrect a backup.  Fortunately, it was a slow day and I don't think anyone lost any posts.   8)

My fingers are crossed that the new SMF is more stable and add-on friendly.  We'll find out in a few months.   :-X

Months? can't you just go into admin and update it. Or is it a case of you need a free weekend incase you blow us up ?

Free weekend.  It may be as simple as updating the files, but in my experience it's never been that easy due to all of the 'mods' we have installed.

I plan to shutdown the site, make a full backup, and then test a couple different approaches.  Hope it's simple and upload the new SMF update.  When that fails, I'll remove all of our mods, and attempt to update again.  Worst case ... if that doesn't work, I'll remove all mods, export the database, remove the old forum completely, upload an entirely new forum, import the database, and start fresh with an entirely new site with all posts hopefully preserved.  Then I'll test some mods (like shoutbox & spoilers).

If I don't have a 100% free weekend to devote to it, the site will either remain shutdown until the following weekend, or I'll just have to revert the backup which would mean everything I did was a waste of time.
