Platform holder predicts that Microsoft and Nintendo will "make the first move"
Sony has predicted that Microsoft and Nintendo will launch new home consoles before it gets round to unleashing the fourth generation of PlayStation.
All three major platform holders are yet to publicly discuss a new iteration of their core gaming hardware - leaving gamers to speculate over the technology a 'Wii 2' or 'Xbox 720' may contain.
Sony's Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said that despite four years passing since PS3's global debut, it still had a "longer lifecycle" ahead of it than Xbox 360 or Wii.
When asked by industry magazine Develop why Sony hadn't yet discussed PS4 publicly, Yoshida said:
"Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move. Or, because Nintendo's approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware - Wii doesn't even support HD resolution - so they might be the first to move.
"Probably we should watch these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan."
Microsoft may disagree: Product director Aaron Greenberg told CVG earlier this year he expected the lifespan of 'new platform' Kinect to last five long years (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=234901).
Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata said last month that it was "likely" the firm would launch a 3D home console in the future (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=253013).
Of course Sony won't make the first of the next wave of consoles, what would they have to copy and then say they were thinking about it all along? ;D
I think they won't be called Wii 2 or xbox 720. The way forward is adding letters after them.
Like Xbox GTi 1.6l ... guaranteed!
given Nintendi's track record of releasing a new console every 6months, i'd say they'd be first.
