Abe to return in new games
Just Add Water, the development team behind PlayStation 3 arcade shooter Gravity Crash, has announced that it is developing multiple Oddworld games.
The studio has confirmed that it is working closely with Oddworld Inhabitants, the developers of the classic original series of Oddworld titles.
"To work with the team at Oddworld has been amazing; being able to tap the minds of Lorne Lanning, Sherry McKenna and others has been fantastic," said Managing Director Stewart Gilray.
While no details were given the studio did say that their discussions with Oddworld Inhabitants have lead to multiple projects across a number of platforms.
"What started off as brief discussions in June 2009, to now working on multiple projects, across multiple platforms," Gilray added.
The games will feature a number of "favourite Oddworld characters" and the studio promised it would reveal the games in the next few months.
The existence of a new Oddworld title was teased yesterday (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=255867) on twitter by series protagonist Abe.
As long as there is still a fart button I will buy it!
That's great news (hopefully).
I read a sad interview in either Game Informer or OXM with the creators of Oddworld. They painted a pretty dark picture regarding the franchise's future.
I'm glad it's not dead ... until we realize this is just a money-grab shovelware scheme. /fingers crossed
I heart Abe!
One of the greatest puzzle/platformers ever .... a little slow for my taste (i like my platformers with pace).
I am pleased i loved oddworld (well, the first two). dfusioness will be happy too, she also loved abe.
JAW wants Oddworld remake on 360
Just Add Water's Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath remake isn't a PS3 exclusive out of choice. An Xbox 360 version is being worked on but, simply, the file is too big.
"Since we announced Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath for the PS3 we've been getting a fair bit of stick along the lines of, 'Why are you not doing 360,' 'Why are you only PS3 Exclusive,' 'Please don't be dicks, support 360,' wrote the developer on its website (http://www.jawltd.com/?p=630).
"I can tell you that we are not PS3 exclusive. As far as we are concerned we are a multi-platform company, supporting the big three: PC, PS3 and 360."
"One thing we can discuss is the size of the game. On XBLA there is a 2GB size limit we have to adhere to. Currently the title weighs in at 2.1GB, and that's without any updates. So either we have to pull a miracle out of the bag with some type of amazing compression system, or ask Microsoft to increase their 2GB limit.
"However," JAW added, "this limit is apparently hardware led, so please let us try and make a miracle happen."
The PSN version of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath aims to arrive next Easter. Added are 720p visuals, more character detail, normal mapping, self-shadowing, re-mastered dialogue, Move support and other undisclosed bonus material.
This will be the first Oddworld game for PlayStation hardware in over a decade - Munch's Odyssey and Stranger's Wrath were both originally Xbox games.
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath took a more combat-heavy approach than previous games in the wacky, humorous series.
