Dead Space 3 'only if people want it'
But we don't want to oversaturate the franchise, says producer
Visceral games will only make Dead Space 3 if there's enough demand from the public and that it "makes sense", exec producer Steve Papoutsis has told CVG.
Speaking at Gamescom last week, the Visceral man said his team would "LOVE" (that's in caps) to work on more Dead Space but emphasised that the studio doesn't want to oversaturate the series.
"I think right now it feels that [EA] is 100% behind what we're doing, but ultimately the thing that everyone needs to remember is that we make games when people want them," he said.
"I think we're going to take it one step at a time. The development team and I would LOVE to make lots, lots and lots of more Dead Space but we're only going to do it if people want it and if it makes sense.
"We don't want to oversaturate it to the point where people don't care and aren't interested in what we're doing," he added. "We're very protective of Dead Space and we want to make everything Dead Space excellent." Just make it, Visceral - we want another already.
In the same interview Steve Papoutsis promised the public will see Dead Space 2 multiplayer details "very soon". About bloody time, too.

Dead Space 3 - Rumored To Be Releasing March 2013(http://media1.gameinformer.com/imagefeed/featured/electronic-arts/visceral/deadspace/deadspace2/ds2_e32010_02_tga_jpgcopy_610.jpg)

During its investor call this afternoon, EA said the Dead Space franchise will see a new release during the publisher's 2013 fiscal year.
"At the foundation is another year of blockbuster brands: Madden NFL, FIFA, Sim City, Medal of Honor, Dead Space, and Need for Speed as well as mobile hits like The Simpsons Tapped Out, and Bejeweled," EA said.
It's unclear if this is Dead Space 3 or a different game in the series. In a follow up e-mail, a spokesperson told Game Informer, "There’s no further information today but watch for several big product announcements from EA at E3 in June."
EA is rumored to be developing Dead Space 3 from Visceral Games. A report from last year suggests the game will take place on an ice planet and not a space ship.
EA's 2013 fiscal year ends March 31, 2013.

I got maybe half way through Dead Space 1, ran out of ammo, decided I didn't fancy fleeing back to the start to buy some - gave up. Haven't played since!
Even though I really like it, I don't like when games do that to you. If I'm a crap shot, I want an abundance of ammunition to make up for my gaming inadequacy! ;D
I might just start 2. The franchise is impressive. And 3 looks great.
Loved the first Dead Space - I'm not sure if I'm on the side of the few, but I was kind of bummed out at the thought of Isaac Clarke speaking in DS2 (although I realize the franchise had to evolve with that if the story were to continue with him as the central character). In Dead Space 1 - the fact that there was little dialogue from the central character added to that feeling of isolation and dread.
This latest version looks interesting though, more for the co-op than the fact that it looks like its sacrificing some of the "Survival Horror" elements for "Action" - which, if treated right could make for a good experience.
hopefully it's split-screen coop
Hilarious! :)
EA: Dead Space 3 got co-op because Dead Space is too scary to play alone
We didn't have a "checklist" of features to borrow, says marketing exec
Dead Space 3's co-op component isn't a copycat feature, argues EA Games' group VP of marketing strategy Laura Miele - it's a testament to just how terrifying Dead Space can be.
Speaking to Gamasutra, Miele described how EA's market research teams have switched from pigeon-holing players in terms of favourite genres or features, to categorising their tastes in terms of mood, situation or time of day.
"It was common for companies to segment the marketplace," she told the site. "Like, there's an Xbox 360 shooter consumer, or you have a PS3 sports fan consumer. And I knew that's not how people were consuming content."
EA's new approach shows that consumers routinely think outside the boxes publishers construct for them. "We went into people's homes," Miele went on. "I went on a couple of these trips, and we asked 300 consumers across the globe to take all their games, place them on the floor and sort them... not a single consumer organized them by platform or genre."
Her findings helped give rise to Visceral's new direction for the Dead Space series - apparently, the first two games enjoyed limited success because they were too scary to play alone. "That's how co-op was introduced. Cooperative play was the ticket; that is the key need and motivation for consumers.
It's not just a question of mimicking competitors, then. "I genuinely believe that there's a deep strategy that isn't just about a checklist of, 'this game did quite well and it had co-op in it, so let's put co-op in this.'"
As comparatively enlightened as Miele's approach seems, we do have misgivings about what it bodes for Dead Space in particular. Sure, it's easier to play a game that doesn't terrify you, but many of those who bought Dead Space 1 and Dead Space 2 did so for the chills - chills which, I suspect, won't be quite so chilling with another player around. Thankfully, you can still play the game solo if you wish.
Visceral claims the new Dead Space mixes balls-out action with suspense, but what we've seen of it suggests that action gets a larger share of the pie. Will returning fans be convinced?
Haha.
Not everyone is immune to fear like GM. ;)

Nice.
Going to finally have to get around to adding DS2 to the collection. But this is looking good too.
A view of the SP & "Drop-in/Drop-out" Co-Op:
Nice. In a perfect world, all games would have drop-in/drop-out co-op.
The co-op portion looks and sounds interesting - the exterior sections are reminding me somewhat of Lost Planet, I just hope that's all it does.

Great song used on this one, I'm just not sure that it works through the whole scene. Strong finish though.
Dead Space 3 Expansion, Awakened, Launches Next Month
Dead Space 3 hit stores in the US yesterday and releases in Europe on Friday, but publisher EA has already announced the game's first DLC expansion, called Awakened.
"In Dead Space 3 Awakened, gamers will experience some of the most disturbing content they have ever seen in a Dead Space game. They are going to love it," said Visceral Games boss Steve Papoutsis.
Meanwhile, EA adds that the DLC will feature the franchise's "darkest chapters as the Necromorph battles become even more gruesome and terrifying than ever before."
Awakened launches in March for 800 MSP
Reviews have been pretty good. Most surprising to me, critics don't seem to be hating the addition of co-op as much I had expected.
For those currently playing - not sure how long before this gets patched, buuut.....there you go.
Action heavy and scare free seems to be getting mentioned a lot in the reviews, so exactly like the previous two games. :)

Nice. I suppose even with a patch you can simply clear your cache & play offline to farm. I'd much rather farm than support micro-transactions. :P

There was a similar glitch in Dead Space 2, you could get as many power nodes as you like to upgrade all weapons plus cash and semiconductors to sell for ammo and stuff too, it was never patched!
Might be an intentional exploit to help players that would normally never make it to the end.
After all, I'm sure developers want as many people to experience the complete game, regardless of their player skills.

We carried out internal checks to verify the validity of the comments made by our source - and while we have a duty of care to protect their identity - we stand by the comments made in the original story.
We would also like to reiterate that we ran the story in good faith, taking the necessary steps with both EA and our source to ensure that the story was as accurate, fair, and well-represented as possible.
We find it perplexing as to why EA changed its stance on its decision not to comment on rumours and speculation, especially given the opportunities that the publisher had to clarify the situation before and after VideoGamer.com published the story. We firmly deny any accusations of fabrication on our part.
