New Xbox 360 Controller Has Transforming D-Pad (http://www.xbox360achievements.org/news/news-6195-New-Xbox-360-Controller-Has-Transforming-D-Pad.html)Microsoft has finally got around to addressing the Xbox 360's godawful D-pad, which as many of you will know, has been an issue since the dawn of man, when chimps forged the first 360 pads in their newly discovered fire. Without opposable thumbs, the chimps screwed up the D-pad, and the rest is history. Don't bother asking how the chimps operated analogue sticks and triggers without opposable thumbs or precision grip. It's a mystery.
Major Nelson has laid bare the rather elegant looking new controller, which now has a handy twistable D-pad, which transforms from the traditional flat configuration, to the more fighter-friendly sunken D-pad, perfect for rolling out fireballs and sho-ryu-kens (that's Dragon Punches, in layman's terms) until the cows come home.
Check out the video and images below - courtesy of the good Major - to get a good look at the revamped controller in all its glory, with its matte silver finish, smooth analogue sticks and grey buttons. Ooh! Sexy!
The new Xbox 360 controller will only ship with the new Play & Charge kit, and will be available in the US on November 9th, 2010 for $64.99. It'll then make the long journey to Europe in February 2011.

shiny, i want 2. maybe it'll make me super mega awesome on SSF4
5 years too late but a step in the right direction.
I do not like the absence of color-coded buttons. Sure, it looks nice, but those colors serve an important purpose to a lot of people.
keep the coded buttons- i need them, d-pad good idea but i wont be buying one
Definitely 5 years too late. It does look sexy, and I bet it's awesome for fighting games but i am with neato, loads of people rely on the coloured buttons, especially younger and/or inexperienced gamers. I mean it would be useless for games like Boom Boom Rocket especially if you are only a casual gamer.
only for super elites then, like me :P
i have a black, white and pink pads and the left stick on all of them is starting to stick from wear and tear. Hopefully this will be released at a perfect time when i'm finally pissed off with my sticky left sticks.

How many games so far have color coordinated stuff on screen to go with the buttons you are supposed to press? This shows up everywhere. What a silly thing to do, grey out the buttons.

Yep. I think even I may have some difficulty with QTE prompts. It takes my brain longer to read "B" than see "Red". I could only imagine how lost casual players will be.

I know where A,B,X,Y is located. I'm talking about the human brain and processing colors faster than letters.

Any news on this?? I can't seem to find one to buy :(
Dont think this has had a EMEA release yet only USA...$64.99...ouch!
Silver Xbox 360 Transforming D-Pad Controller Coming To EU in March Microsoft's sleek-looking new silver and black Xbox 360 controller with monochrome face buttons and a handy transforming d-pad has been out in North America since November of last year, retailing for $64.99. And quite nice it is too... we're guessing. We haven't actually tried using one yet.
The big gimmick is that transforming d-pad, which can be rotated to turn it from a cross configuration to the classic disc and vice-versa. Perfect for fighting games, like Super Street Fighter IV and its ilk, where precise d-pad motions can mean the difference between glorious victory or an untimely KO.
Take a look at the promotional video for the new Xbox 360 controller, which according to the accompanying promo blurb is due to hit the UK and Europe on March 4th, 2011. That's if we've read it correctly, so don't go quoting us on that, OK? The price has been confirmed as £44.99, so expect the pad to start surfacing for pre-order soon. Oh, and the video isn't supposed to have audio, and we know it loops twice. Just take a look!
I just don't like the monochrome color scheme. It looks all cool and futuristic-y, but I like my color-coded buttons.
Personally, I use the standard wireless controller for most games, and my Street Fighter Madcatz controllers for D-Pad heavy games.
£45.00 for a controller with no colours on the buttons, are they taking the royal piss! If the d pad was better in the first place there would be no need for this abomination!
I like the pad, the coloured buttons aren't an issue and shouldn't be for any hardcore 360 gamers really, the price is the issue, it's dearer than a Dualshock 3 PS3 pad which has built in batteries, bluetooth and admittedly bad sixaxis control, bizarre price!

i was referring to the fact that it costs more money to put colours on the buttons, this pad has no colours and it's £45.00!
Fair point mate, people have moaned about the lack of colours already though, shouldn't really be a problem for any of us lot to be fair or anyone that's played on a 360 for years.
i like them, colour is for rainbows and i aint no rainbow sweetcheeks!
I like the colours like that, but the only thing i would like to see is a dpad that works properly. The current one is terrible
Amazon discounts transforming Xbox 360 controller
(http://admintell.napco.com/ee/images/uploads/gamertell/transforming_xbox_360_controller.jpg)
Late last year, Microsoft released a new kind of Xbox 360 controller. This new controller has a gray and black color scheme that is a departure from the original Xbox 360 controllers. It also used to be more expensive than older controllers. Today (January 23, 2011) Amazon knocked $21 off the new Xbox 360 controller, effectively bringing it down to $43.99 (http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Silver-Controller-Play-Charge/dp/B0041HROGG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1295871340&sr=8-3).
The biggest difference this controller has is its transforming directional pad. With a simple twist, the d-pad can either provide easier 360 degree movement, or provide better access to the four directions typically offered by a d-pad. The extra cost is worth it to some gamers who aren't fans of the d-pad design on most Xbox 360 controllers. This feature is best used in games that explicitly require using the d-pad for certain actions such as Street Fighter IV.
The controller also comes with the Play & Charge Kit.
The question here is whether you really need this special mutant controller. Normally I'd say no, but this 32% discount has made the new controller cheaper than old ones with a Play & Charge Kit. So unless you can't imagine using a Xbox 360 controller without the trademark orange, blue, red and green face buttons, I'd say go for it.
