Title: SSX (2012)
Post by: GamerMan316 on November 09, 2010, 12:10:17 PM
Speculation is rampant that a new game in the SSX series is in the works after internet sleuths spotted EA- registered domains relating to the arcade snowboarding franchise.

EA registered five new SSX-related domain names (all spotted by superannuation (http://twitter.com/#!/supererogatory/status/1175739206471680)), which suggest a game called SSX: Deadly Descent exists somewhere deep within the confines of the mega publisher.

One domain registered is for something called SSX First Descent – could that be a handheld and/or Wii version?

The last game in the series, SSX Blur, disappointed. Tom awarded it 6/10 for Eurogamer.

My friends were apeshit for these "X"treme games back in the '90s.  I never really enjoyed them, but I did like their soundtracks.   :)

was that the 360 version, if it is the one i'm thinking off i liked it, gave you points for doing slow, smooth spins instead of most games where you need to do 1080's off every jump

SSX Tricky was on PS2, Xbox & Gamecube, there aren't any SSX games on the 360.

SSX: Deadly Descents details revealed

SSX: Deadly Descents uses real world landscapes for mountain ranges – a world first for a snowboarding videogame.

The game's official Facebook page reveals more.

"Redefining the SSX: Franchise, SSX: Deadly Descents will pit riders versus both mountain and man," EA said.

"Players will explore the story of a team who seek to be the first to descend the faces of the most treacherous mountain ranges on the planet. The team will travel the world to face the worst that Mother Nature can throw at them.

"From the peaks of the Himalayas, where the air is so thin that riders have to descend through the death zone at breakneck speeds to keep from blacking out, to the solid ice ranges of Antarctica, where a sunlit line is the only survival option when temperatures drop 50 degrees centigrade in the shade.

"And the mountain isn't the only danger players will face. In SSX: Deadly Descents the first goal is to survive. The second, in true SSX fashion, is to look good doing it."

EA Canada's SSX: Deadly Descents looks darker that previous games in the much-loved series. The teaser video, below, reveals a Call of Duty feel spliced with gritty, tense, downhill action.

The trailer has sparked concern from some long-standing SSX fans that EA is taking the series too far from its roots. On his blog EA Sports president described the game as "obscure".

EA has confirmed to Eurogamer that SSX: Deadly Descents will be released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 only.

SSX: Deadly Descents details spilled

Gritty SSX reboot Deadly Descents features a rewind button to undo momentary bad boarding.

You can hurtle down and test that on more than 70 mountains spanning 17 regions, including famous peaks in The Alps, Himalayas, Kilimanjaro, Siberia and Caucasus. That's according to an EGM preview of the new game (read by NeoGAF, via VG247).

Mountains are made auto-magically by the sophisticated Deadly Descents engine, which even pulls data for use from Google Earth - oh no it's alive, run! On each of these huge, snow-covered rocks you'll encounter a specific danger. Mentioned are thin air, ice and temperature - all three of which we'd consider common to most high-top pistes.

Those mountains can be tackled whichever way you want, but there are also loosely defined tracks to keep you on course.

As you begin to conquer mountains, your purse will swell and you'll be able to buy new equipment, most of which has specific advantages in certain conditions.

The Elise character from the old SSX games is returning, and there will be new faces joining her.

SSX: Deadly Descents was unveiled in December as part of the Spike Video Game Awards bonanza. There was trepidation from fans about the announcement, however - had the bright and boisterous SSX of the past been forgotten? How that pans out we'll have to wait and see.

SSX: Deadly Descents - New gameplay details
The nine deadly descents await

The battle against the elements in SSX: Deadly Descents will take players across a number of dangerous real-world locations and will introduce a number of unfamiliar new gameplay mechanics.

However, fans of the series can look forward to some of the series' defining features making a return in SSX: Deadly Descent.

In the latest issue of PSM3 EA reveals that the Deadly Descents introduces a new win condition to the game; survival.

According to the mag the game is based on the "concept of of nine deadly deadly descents", which are describe as boss battle-esque and take nine real life mountains and pits the player against the unique challenges posed by these locations.

For example "in New Zealand you need to battle the wind and ride on a skinny ridge. In Siberia, it's about ice - you use ice axes to climb out of crevasses, or act as an emergency break. Alaska is about snow, and avalanches which will use real physics and be displayed in an innovative way".

The feature goes on to detail scripted moments "a bit like the scenery destruction in Split/Second" but are given unpredictability since they are driven and triggered by physics. A Prince of Persia style rewind mechanic is also mentioned.

I'm having a fantastic time with the World Events, and competing against friends times and trick scores in Explore mode.  It's actually a ton of fun.
