Title: DC Universe Online (MMO)
Post by: Handshakes on January 15, 2011, 03:07:17 PM
I was initially very skeptical of DCU because Champions Online tried to make an action-ish super hero MMO and it stunk on ice. From the early hype I heard I didn't think DCU looked all that different. But now that it is out in the wild I've been watching some videos of it and hearing a lot of positive buzz. All in all, I am strongly considering giving it a go.

Now, as with all MMOs, the more people you get to play with you from the beginning the better. Is anyone else here thinking of playing (or playing already)?

Played beta, enjoyed to a point, trying to decide if its worth picking up for not.
Gotten fairly good reviews, ill maybe wait till end of month - middle of next month and see how the buzz is, if its still good-strong then ill take the plunge.

I've been "considering" playing it since it was announced.

I'm not a fan of MMO's, but I am a fan of comics.  And I love what I've seen of the game so far.

I definitely don't have any free time to put into an MMO until Spring.  At that time, I will at least try a trial.

If/when it gets a 360 release I'l save up for a few months so I can pay off a few weeks subscription fees and pick it up. My PC however can't even play Minecraft so ... ;D

It came out on PS3 on Friday, there won't be a 360 version.

Oh. Well then, I definitely won't be playing it. I worked it out the other day and I'd have to save up for a year and 2 weeks on my current income to buy a PS3 without any games. >_<

Very impressive voice talent for this game:

Adam Baldwin - Superman
Corey Burton - Brainiac
Kevin Conroy - Batman[22]
Michelle Forbes - Circe
Mark Hamill - Joker
James Marsters - Lex Luthor
Dwight Schultz - Flash/Barry Allen
Arleen Sorkin - Harley Quinn
Gina Torres - Wonder Woman
Wil Wheaton - Robin/Tim Drake

I like how James Marsters is playing Lex when he was recently playing Brainiac in Smallville!

Oh & Wil Wheaton is in

Most of the cast seem to be able to find work really easily, shows how good a show it was and how it's an absolute traversty that it was cancelled :(

Forget Big Brother, sh*t like Eastenders, Emmerdale, etc. keeps running and running and running, and people talk about it like it's real ("oh, did you see what so and so did last night, what a bastard" etc) and then say I'm the weirdo when I talk about superior storytelling like Firefly (or basically anything else I watch), jeez (can you tell that this pissed me off!)

I feel exactly the same way. If you like/talk about anything that's not '100% mainstream' like that, then you're seen as a tv geek and noone will ever take you seriously again. And the thing is, all this sh*t like Eastenders and whatnot, you can watch it and predict 99% of everything that happens one or two episodes before it happens. It boggles my mind how people can be so braindead as to watch such shite.

Agreed.

The cast is an interesting blend of the various DC Animated TV series and the recent DC Animated movies.

I'm just happy they didn't repeat the cast lineup of 'New Frontier'.  Great movie, but the voice acting was distracting.

I agree. New Frontier bothered me on a lot of levels, voice acting included. I also didn't like the focus on Green Lantern (snooze), the way they made Wonder Woman some kind of bull-lesbian hippy for the two seconds of screen time they gave her, and the weird cartooning.

At least they made up for it with the genius Crisis On Two Earths.

I'm on a PVE server, so the only pvp I've done so far has been one Arena match and one Legends match. So far they both seem really poorly balanced.

The matches I had were really one sided both times, it felt a lot like the pvp minigames in Age of Conan. On the Legends match me and my team of noob Harleys got smoked, and in the Arena my team cleaned up in an equally one sided fashion.

Sony cuts DC Universe subscription fee

Sony Online Entertainment has announced a 25 per cent price cut on subscription fees for its DC Universe Online MMO.

According to the PlayStation Blog, as of 8th February, any US users who sign up for the three-month DC Universe Online Legend Plan will now pay $29.99. That's a nice saving on the standard $41.99 package. You'll keep paying the reduced rate as long as your subscription is active.

Sony hasn't confirmed whether the offer will make it over to Europe but we'll update as soon as we find out either way.

It might be a good time to jump in. Although Eurogamer's John Bedford complained the PC and PlayStation 3 MMO was a little light on content at launch, SOE recently unveiled a meaty update for the game due later this month.

It's nice that they're being competitive with their pricing, but if I was going to take the plunge I would opt for the lifetime subscription one-time fee (PC).  Too bad it's not available for PS3, that I'm aware of.

DCU (and SOE) is back online, plus BONUS price change!

(US pricing)
DC Universe – 12 Month Package (12 Months) – Price Change (now $119.99, original price $143.99)
DC Universe – 3 Month Package (3 Months) – Price Change (now $38.99, original price $41.99)
DC Universe – 6 Month Package (6 Months) – Price Change (now $71.99, original price $77.99)

Not sure if this is a permanent price drop, or a temporary welcome back sale.

On a related note, I'm unable to sign into SOE for some reason.

I log in, but it tells me "All users need to reset their passwords.  Please click below to start this process."

However, when I go through the process, I get an email saying, "There has been trouble processing your request."

To anyone with an SOE account, can you log in?  Either SOE is not fully restored, or there is something wrong with my account.

http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/en/free/

1. What does Free to Play mean and why are you moving to this model?
Free to Play means anyone can enjoy the exciting world of DC Universe Online at no cost. Alternatively, you can purchase the items or features you want, or even get premium access to game content by purchasing a subscription. It's up to you and how you want to play the game. There is no software purchase or subscription fee required for basic game content and features.

Using this model, players will have the option to customize their game experience by purchasing services, items and more that best fit their style of play. When added to an already robust world, you will be able to play the game in different ways.

There will be three access levels offered in DCUO: Legendary, Premium, and Free.

2. What is the Free Access Level and how much does it cost?
With the Free Access level you can enjoy all of the level 1 â€" 30 missions, Alerts, Duos, Arenas, and the Batcave and Fortress of Solitude Raids. There are limitations in terms of character slots, inventory, and other features. Be sure to see the complete access comparison matrix for full details. Best of all, this access level is completely free, just download the software and play!

3. What is the Premium Access Level and how much does it cost?
Premium Access is the next level up from Free Access. It contains everything from the Free Access level plus more slots, capabilities, and options. Be sure to see the complete access comparison matrix for full details. To achieve this access level you only need to spend 500 Station Cash on the PC or U.S. $5.00 (or the foreign equivalent) on the PS3 Marketplace. Best of all, Premium Access does not expire.

4. What is the Legendary Game Access Level and how much does it cost?
The Legendary Level is the "I want it all" way to play. It includes 16 character slots, a greatly expanded inventory (an even more inventory slots are available for purchase), free access to all current and future DLC Packs, and much more. This level of access gives you the most features and options, including unlimited cash balances. We have many game pass plans available to Legendary players so be sure to check the in-game Marketplace, PlayStation®3 Store or dcuniverseonline.com to choose the one best for you.

5. Can I use SOE Station Cash to purchase my Legendary Access?
Yes, you can. Legendary level access will be available for purchase for PC players in game with SOE Station Cash.

6. As a current subscriber what does going to the Free-to-Play model mean for me?
As a current subscriber of DC Universe Online, you will automatically convert to our Legendary Access plan with all its benefits and privileges as long as your subscription remains active. For you, the change to Free-to-Play opens up additional benefits including increased numbers of inventory and character slots, priority access to servers and the inclusion of all DLC Packs in your access level at no additional charge!

7. I'm a former subscriber but want to try the game again. What features will be available to me?
Anyone who has subscribed to DC Universe Online before the free-to-play transition will be converted to a Premium account at no cost. This provides you additional benefits you would not receive with a Free Access account such as access to the Broker, greater inventory space, and much more!

8. I'm a Lifetime Subscriber. Will I need to purchase anything additional?
No. As a Lifetime Subscriber you will be kept at Legendary Access status for the life of your account.

9. Are you still adding free content to the game for everyone?
During the transition to free-to-play, we will continue to add brand new game play missions/zones that everyone can enjoy, including two more Fortress of Solitude raids! Players can also expect continued enhancements to existing content and mechanics.

10. What happens to my characters if I change from Legendary to Premium?
If you have more than six characters you will need to deactivate enough characters to get down to the six character limit. Those characters can be reactivated later by purchasing additional character slots or by upgrading to Legendary Access again. If you have more than 42 inventory items and/or more than 24 bank items you will also need to either purchase additional inventory and/or bank slots or choose which items within those limits you want to carry over to your Premium Access account. Items that are not carried over cannot be recovered later. Finally, any cash you have in excess of the Premium Access limit will be transferred to escrow (see Question 12).

11. What happens if I play with players that are of different Access Levels? Does it affect my personal gameplay experience?
In most cases, you can still play with anyone you choose anywhere in the game. Generally, your access level will not affect your ability to join with others on missions, raids and alerts. However, a player who does not have access to a particular DLC Pack will not be able to join other players in those zones.

12. Why is my cash being limited if I'm Premium Access?
While we do offer a higher cash limit at the Premium Access level, there are still restrictions compared to the Legendary level. Rest assured that the money you earn in excess of the Premium Access in-game currency limit will be kept in escrow for you and you can always buy a Cash Boost from the Marketplace to access your escrow cash for big purchases. Or, you can upgrade to Legendary Access to eliminate the inconvenience of in-game currency limits.

13. Why are Broker slots being limited?
Selling items in the Broker interface is a Legendary and Premium Access service. You can upgrade to Premium Access to get five auction slots and the ability to buy even more slots, or upgrade to Legendary Access to get unlimited slots to sell your items.

14. What kind of restrictions will be placed on Leagues for Free Access?
The Free and Premium Access levels allow you to become a member of a guild. Only Legendary Access players can actually form guilds.

15. Can I keep my Legend Plan 90-day game time pack when the game goes Free-To-Play?
Yes you can! You will automatically be converted to Legendary Access and will continue to renew at the same rate as long as you do not cancel or discontinue your subscription to Legendary Access at any time.

16. When DCUO converts to Free-to-Play will my current membership end, or will I convert automatically to Legendary Access?
You will convert automatically to Legendary Access on your current recurring plan.

I just discovered Sony has locked trophies away from F2P players.  It's likely you have to pay for a full subscription ($15/mo) for trophies.  However some claim you can spend $5 one time for "Premium" access, which come with other goodies.

If the goodies that comes with $5 are cool, I may go that route.  If not, I may end up playing this on PC just to save space on my PS3's HDD.
